2022 Los Cabos Fishing Tournament Season Gets Off to an Amazing Start

Los Cabos fishing tournament season got off to a roaring start last week, and if the results from the opening event, the Pelagic Triple Crown of Fishing, signify anything, it’s that the 2022 season is going to be both lucrative and a whole lot of fun.

For starters, to say the fish were biting is a bit of an understatement. The winning team, Stella June, caught and released a whopping 38 marlin in just two days of fishing. The second place team, Cloud Nine, was right behind them with 36. These two teams also took the lion’s share of the prize money, naturally, with Stella June earning $153,336 dollars for a weekend of incredible fishing, and Cloud Nine cashing an oversized check for $136,760 dollars.

The total teams entered were down this year from last – 37 rather than the 50 in 2021 – but the money was up and so were the catch tallies. Both Stella June and Cloud Nine earned more money that last year’s winner, Laguna Madre ($131,000), and the tournament as a whole saw close to 500,000 in prize money distributed, the total boosted by the new $72,500 across-the-board jackpot entry fees. Even more impressive, perhaps, were the 304 marlin caught in just two days by the 37 teams, including a few that topped 500 pounds.

The Pelagic Triple Crown of Fishing is about more than just marlin, however, with impressive checks also handed out to winners in the tuna, dorado and wahoo divisions. Team Let’s Go took the top tuna prize – $52,868 dollars – for a 226 pounder, while Pisces won upwards of 20 grand ($20,668, to be exact)  for a 56.3 pound dorado (aka mahi mahi), and Captiva earned $27,468 for a 42.9 pound wahoo.

Next up on the summer fishing tournament calendar:

Stars and Stripes Golf and Fishing Tournament – June 22 – 26

During the 20+ years of its existence, the annual Stars and Stripes’ golf and fishing tournament has raised over 40 million dollars for youth focused charities. But it’s not simply a tournament or a charity benefit…more like a complete lifestyle experience. Participants stay at the luxurious Hilton Los Cabos; go big-game sport fishing for dorado, wahoo, tuna, sailfish, swordfish, and black, blue and striped marlin; play golf at some of the world’s best golf courses; and enjoy spectacular live entertainment nightly. There’s no word as yet on this year’s headliner. Expect a big name, though. Sammy Hagar and other rock star royalty have performed in recent years.

East Cape Dorado Shootout – July 16

This is one of the largest fishing tournaments in Southern Baja, with an average turnout of 130 teams each year. What makes it so popular? The opportunity to win a brand new, fully-loaded 2022 Volkswagen 4×4 Amarok pickup truck, of course. The rules are simple, catch the biggest dorado on July 16th and you win the truck. There will also be great prizes for 2nd and 3rd place, as well as for the largest tuna and largest wahoo caught that day. The beauty of this one-day tournament format is that anyone can win. After the tournament, Palmas De Cortez in Los Barriles will host the award ceremony, which is unlike any in Baja, with dinner, music, a raffle, and more. The combined cash and prizes here are expected to top $200,000 in 2022.

Ladies Only Fishing Tournament at Palmas de Cortez – July 20 – 24

The name doesn’t lie. Only lady anglers are eligible to participate (in teams of up to four) in this two-day fishing tournament hosted by Palmas de Cortez…although captains and deckhands can be men. The first version of this tournament was held in 2019 – and was a rousing success, as was the second iteration in 2021. The entry fee is $200 per team, with points awarded according to the species of fish reeled in. Billfish (200 pts.) and roosterfish (100 pts.) are catch and release, with photo verification. Tuna, wahoo, dorado, amberjack and jack crevalle are all worth 100 points, assuming they meet minimum weight standards. The winning team nets a return trip for the entire team, including a four nights accommodation package at Palmas de Cortez, with two days of standard cruiser fishing. Prizes for the runner-up teams (2nd and 3rd place) will be announced at the awards ceremony.

Bisbee’s East Cape Offshore – August 2 – 6

The East Cape Offshore is always first, and kicks off Bisbee’s 2022 series starting August 2nd. Cash prizes will be awarded to the top three qualifiers in marlin, tuna and dorado categories, with the awards celebration taking place afterwards at the Hotel Buena Vista. In 2021, a record 97 teams competed for $1,582,975. The 97 teams beat the previous year’s record of 72 by 25, while the ECO topped the previous year’s record payout by nearly half a million dollars. Base entry for the event is $1,500 per team, with additional fees for daily jackpots ($32,000 “across the board”). Prize money is based on entry fees received, with 60% going to the billfish winners, and 20% each to top tuna and dorado anglers. For first-timers, each tournament in the Bisbee’s series has an Early Bird Drawing. The winner of the drawing gets a free entry to the following year’s tournament. To be eligible the paid entry (base entry only) must be received by the Early Bird Deadline (June 30th, 2022 for the ECO).

Summer is Here, and So is Fishing Season! June Events in Los Cabos

When it comes to events in Los Cabos, the biggest headliners are always fishing tournaments. Not only are these the longest-running events in the region – Bisbee’s Black and Blue marlin fishing tournament has been going strong for 40 plus years – but the money involved continues to grow each year. Last year, for example, Bisbee’s three Los Cabos tournaments offered over 13 million dollars in cash payouts.

Each year now, new records are set. So the excitement for the 2022 fishing season has been at a fever pitch since the 2021 season ended. Well, it’s finally here and begins later this week with the kickoff  event, the Pelagic Triple Crown of Fishing, offering over $500,000 reasons for anglers to get excited. The Stars and Stripes Tournament – which features both golf and fishing and has raised over 40 million dollars for youth-focused charities since it began in 1996 – also returns this June.

Summertime excitement is also building for the biggest culinary event the region has seen post-pandemic, the Todos Santos + Pescadero Culinary Experience, which is bringing over three dozen talented chefs from the U.S. and Mexico to showcase their talents at regional restaurant venues in Baja California Sur.

Art Walk in San Jose del Cabo – June 2, 9, 16, 23, 30

The historic Gallery District in San Jose del Cabo takes center stage each Thursday evening during high tourist season–November through June–when residents and visitors alike are invited to stroll its cobblestone streets and peruse the many eclectic fine arts galleries. Art Walk hours are 5 to 9 p.m., when the neighborhood comes alive with wine, cheese and guided tours, as well as colorful street artists and strolling mariachis.

Pelagic Triple Crown of Fishing Tournament – June 2 – 5

Bisbee’s isn’t the only organizer of big money fishing tournaments in Los Cabos. Water sports apparel maker non pareil Pelagic returns to host its 8th annual Summer Slam this June, a two day, team fishing competition in which fishermen and women target black, blue and striped marlin, as well as tuna, wahoo and dorado. Base entry is $3,500 per team, with $72,000 across-the-board for all jackpots and challenges. The all-in figure is a massive leap over previous years, and an indication Pelagic is stepping up in class. Cash prizes are expected to top $500,000 in 2022, positioning the tournament as a slam-bang kick-off to what is sure to be another record breaking season.

Todos Santos + Pescadero Culinary Experiences – June 3 – 5

Culinary festivals have been in short supply in recent years, so this one would likely have generated excitement anyway. But the star power here in terms of top chefs really amps up the anticipation for this three-day event at restaurants throughout Todos Santos and Pescadero. Baja Med pioneer and scion of Tijuana’s most famous restaurant family, Javier Plascencia will be there (his restaurant in Todos Santos, Jazamango, is a must visit year-round, but especially during this culinary experience), as will Michelin rated, James Beard award winning chef Rick Bayless, and Benito Molina of Manzanilla, the Ensenda restaurant which has been ranked as one of the best in Latin American. That’s just for starters. In total, over 36 top chefs will participate, including talented culinary artists from the U.S., Baja California Sur, and beyond. The spectacular opening night concept (“Taste of Baja California Sur”) features visiting chefs showcasing their mastery at a host of restaurants in Todos Santos and Pescadero. Tickets are still available for purchase online at tspculinary.com/tickets.

Summer Catch: Seasonal Fishing Tournaments on the East Cape of Los Cabos

When most people think of Los Cabos, the images that spring to mind are probably of cape cities Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo. After all, these are the most popular tourist destinations, home to the most luxurious resorts and vacation rentals … not to mention the biggest activities and adventure tour operators, and the highest profile events.

The East Cape of Los Cabos, by contrast, is less well known, less developed, and as a consequence, less traveled. But among long-time visitors to the region, the East Cape holds a special affection. Because it is less developed, the East Cape for many is a reminder of the “Old Cabo”, a glimpse of what the region used to be like in decades past. And the East Cape truly is pristinely, picturesquely beautiful, with gorgeous beaches – many of which are virtually free of people – and an incredible array of world-class outdoor activities, from surfing and windsports to fishing and diving,

When it comes to fishing,  for instance, the East Cape is an amazing destination, with its share of notable fishing tournaments. Granted,  the East Cape slate of events is certainly less publicized than those in Cabo San Lucas, but  during the summer months, the East Cape is actually the site of many more tournaments … several of which have very impressive prize pools.

With that in mind, here are four East Cape tournament events that sporting fishermen and women should definitely have on their radar for summer 2022:

The East Cape Offshore kicks off Bisbee’s 2022 series starting August 2nd. Cash prizes will be awarded to the top three qualifiers in marlin, tuna and dorado categories, with the awards celebration taking place afterwards at the Hotel Buena Vista Beach Resort. Last year’s prize pool exceeded 1.5 million dollars.

East Cape Gold Cup Wahoo Jackpot Tournament – August 20

Similar to the East Cape Dorado Shootout with its drive-away first prize, the biggest wahoo caught on August 20th will earn one lucky fisherman a showroom fresh 2022 Volkswagen Polo. In total, over $100,000 in cash and prizes are expected to be up for grabs, including great raffle prizes, return trips, fishing outings, and much more. The entry fee is only $500 per team and includes dinner at the awards ceremony.

Easter Season Happenings: April Events in Los Cabos

April is the rare month with no fishing or golf tournaments in Los Cabos, but it does bring one of the region’s signature off-road racing events, the NORRA Mexican 1000 – aka, “The Happiest Race on Earth” – a vintage rally style race that starts in Ensenada and concludes 1000 miles later in San Jose del Cabo with a boisterous finish line fiesta.

April is also a big month for cultural and culinary celebrations in Los Cabos. The Festival Sabores de Baja returns after a pandemic-induced layoff, showcasing festive music and dancing, not to mention delicious food and flavors, in the organic farming community of Miraflores. Art Walk also continues, lighting up the downtown area of San Jose del Cabo with art and revelry each Thursday evening until it ends its seasonal run in June.

Festival Sabores de Baja in Miraflores – April 3

The small town of Miraflores is notable for several reasons, including the unusual longevity of its residents and its annual summer harvest festival celebrating pitahayas, the favorite fruit of the area’s indigenous inhabitants. Mainly, though, it is known as the foremost organic farming community in the Los Cabos municipality, the place the region’s best restaurants go to source their produce. It’s the perfect place, in other words, to host an organic food festival that focuses on the traditional cuisine and culture of Los Cabos. The 5th annual Sabores de Baja (sabores translates as tastes or flavors) will be hosted by Doña Pame Restaurante from noon to 5 p.m. on April 3rd, and will feature live music and dancing.

Art Walk in San Jose del Cabo – April 7, 14, 21, 28

The historic Gallery District in San Jose del Cabo takes center stage each Thursday evening during high tourist season–November through June–when residents and visitors alike are invited to stroll its cobblestone streets and peruse the many eclectic fine arts galleries. Art Walk hours are 5 to 9 p.m., when the neighborhood comes alive with wine, cheese and guided tours, as well as colorful street artists and strolling mariachis.

Semana Santa – April 10 to 17

At its core, México remains a profoundly Catholic country. It should come as no surprise then that Holy Week, the week from Palm Sunday to Easter Sunday, is one of the most important and widely celebrated holiday periods in the country. In fact, it may even exceed Christmas in terms of seasonal travel. Semana Santa (the Spanish name for Holy Week) is equivalent to Spring Break for college students, but collegians are hardly the only ones to take advantage of the time off. Many Mexican families travel en masse to beachfront locales on both the Atlantic and Pacific Coasts, including Los Cabos. For U.S and Canadian travelers, the important things to note about Semana Santa are the week-long closure of most banks and virtually all government offices, and of course the increased competition for accommodations of all kinds.

NORRA Mexican 1000 – April 29 to May 6

The world’s most rugged off-road race, the legendary Baja 1000, has for better than four decades been run under the SCORE (Southern California Off-Road Enthusiasts) banner. But that wasn’t always the case. Back when the Baja 1000 was inaugurated, in 1967, it was organized by NORRA (the National Off-Road Racing Association). NORRA returned to the peninsula’s off-road racing scene in a big way in 2010, when it kicked off the first Mexican 1000, a fun, vintage-style rally race meant to evoke the flavor of the early Baja 1000s. The new version revs up in Ensenada, then courses down the peninsula before concluding in Los Cabos, where it is celebrated with a huge after-party and awards ceremony.

Swim with Whale Sharks Season – August to May

The whale shark is the largest fish in the world, reaching up to 40 feet in length, and weighing as much as 47,000 pounds. There is no risk in swimming with these gentle giants, however, since they subsist solely on plankton. Baja California Sur’s capital city of La Paz is the premier place to indulge in this interactive and unforgettable wildlife adventure, with the majority of swim tours occurring near the tip of the El Mogote peninsula. Complimentary round-trip transportation from Los Cabos is provided by several respected activities providers.

Pelagic Triple Crown of Fishing to Kick Off Summer Fishing Season in Los Cabos

It’s official. We’re now just a little more than two months away from the start of fishing tournament season in Los Cabos, as the summer slate of events kicks off June 2 – 5 with the Pelagic Triple Crown of Fishing.

It’s great news for fishermen and fisherwomen, as well as for those who simply love Los Cabos.  After two record breaking years of fishing tournaments, excitement is at an all-time high for 2022. Bisbee’s trio of tournaments offered a combined 13.2 million in prize money last year, breaking all the records previously set in 2020. It’s expected records for attendance and payouts in these and other tournaments will be broken again this year.

And it all starts with the estimated $500,000 on the line for the 8th Triple Crown of Fishing Tournament in Cabo San Lucas. Fifty teams and 213 anglers competed in 2021, with Team Laguna Madre taking first place in the billfish division, breaking the tournament record for prize money in the process, with a winner’s share of $131,000 out of the combined half a million dollar prize pool. Over 140 billfish were documented during the course of last year’s tournament.

So those are numbers to beat in 2022, and the rules remain the same. There are two categories: billfish and gamefish. Species eligible in the former category include blue, black and striped marlin, as well as sailfish, spearfish and swordfish. Of these, blue marlin, black marlin and swordfish are the most valuable, counting 300 points per properly documented catch and release. Striped marlin, sailfish and spearfish count 100 points each. Documentation is done via video evidence and radio verification.

Game fish like tuna, dorado and wahoo, meanwhile, are assigned points at the rate of one point per pound. A 30 lb. wahoo, for example, is worth 30 points.

There are four divisions for daily jackpots. Billfish jackpots are paid out according to the most billfish release points each day, while tuna, dorado and wahoo jackpots are paid out based on the single heaviest fish caught of each species, each day.

We mentioned fishermen and fisherwomen earlier and this was not mere political correctness. A future sport fishing superstar, 8-year-old Evelyn Schultz from Detroit, boated a 30.2 lb. yellowfin tuna solo to win a daily jackpot in the 2019 event; and Kim Bullman’s performance in 2021 was even more impressive. She took home the awards for Top Female and Top Overall Angler, helping to propel Team Laguna Madre to their first place finish by accounting for 800 of their 1300 points.

Both the kick-off party and the post-tournament awards ceremony this year will be held at Baja Cantina on the Marina, also the headquarters for Bisbee’s fishing tournaments in Cabo San Lucas. Registration for the event is open now, and will remain open until June 10th, the day before fishing officially begins. Base entry is $3,500 per team (up to six anglers), with $72,500 across-the-board for all jackpots and challenges. Prize money is tied to the number of teams entered, of course, but a reasonable expectation relative to 2021 puts the estimate in the 500,000 overall range for this year’s Pelagic Triple Crown of Fishing Tournament.

Tournament sponsor Pelagic Gear is, as most of our readers probably know, a Newport Beach based company that’s one of the world’s leaders when it comes to lifestyle apparel and high-performance gear associated with watersports like fishing, boating, diving and surfing.

In addition to their Cabo San Lucas based tournament, Pelagic also hosts fishing tournaments in Palm Beach, Florida (Pelagic Shamrock Shootout), Costa Rica (Blue Marlin Classic), Puerto Rico (Rockstar Puerto Rico), and San Diego, California (Pelagic California Tuna Challenge).

Nature Nirvana: 5 Reasons to Visit Los Cabos This Summer

Los Cabos is forever sunny and spectacular, with a host of beautiful beaches to tempt U.S. and Canadian vacationers. But although cape cities Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo offer bikini and boardshorts weather on a year-round basis, summertime still has a special appeal here, because it is the perfect season to experience some  of the region’s signature outdoor adventures.

Here are five of our five favoites, and five reasons you’ll definitely want to visit Los Cabos this summer.

Catch Waves Surfing the Sea of Cortez

Surfers will find great waves in Baja California Sur on a year-round basis, although the scene shifts according to the season. During the winter months, for example, the best top breaks are found on the Pacific Coast, most notably off beaches like Cerritos, San Pedrito and La Pastora. The Sea of Cortez takes center stage during the summer months, when seasonal weather fronts and storms send perfect southeast swells towards Los Cabos and its beautiful East Cape. Los Cabos sites like Monuments (Playa Monumentos) reach their zenith during the summer, as do East Cape meccas like Nine Palms and Shipwrecks. The most famous summer break, however, is Zippers at Playa Costa Azul in San Jose del Cabo, formerly the host of the only WSL sponsored tournament in the area. Zippers and The Rock as Costa Azul are best left to the experts, but Costa Azul’s middle break and nearby Acapulquito are popular spots for beginners, and lessons are available.

Swim Side-by-Side with the World’s Largest Fish

The whale shark is the largest fish in the world, reaching up to 40 feet in length, and weighing as much as 47,000 pounds. There is no risk in swimming with these gentle giants, however, since they subsist solely on plankton. Baja California Sur’s capital city of La Paz is the premier place to indulge in this unforgettable wildlife adventure, with the majority of interactions occurring near the tip of the El Mogote peninsula. For those interested in whale shark swims, complimentary round-trip transportation from Los Cabos is provided by several respected activities providers, beginning during the month of August each year.

Go Big-Game Fishing for Blue and Black Marlin

Make no mistake. There is no bad time to go fishing in Los Cabos. But for those interested in getting their hooks into enormous black and blue marlin, there is definitely a “best” time…and it starts right now. Why do you think Bisbee’s hosts its trio of big-money tournaments every year in August and October? Bisbee’s East Cape Offshore saw a record 704 lb. blue marlin bagged in 2020, and saw all three tournaments pass the million-dollar mark in prize money for the first time. In 2021, total prize pools for the three topped 13.2 million. Despite the lucrative competitive allure, however, visiting anglers don’t need to enter any tournaments to enjoy the region’s spectacular big-game sportfishing. Charter boats are always available from the Cabo San Luas Marina.

Dive Into Unforgettable Undersea Adventures

Los Cabos boasts spectacular year-round diving, with a half-dozen great sites at Land’s End alone, plus easy access to the living coral reef at Cabo Pulmo–one of the oldest and largest in the Western Hemisphere–and dedicated shipwreck dive sites in both Los Cabos and La Paz. One local boat, the Solmar V, even offers week-long trips to the Revillagigedo Archipelago, some 250 miles south of Cabo San Lucas, for unbelievable underwater encounters with deep sea creatures like manta rays, dolphins and great white sharks. The best times to visit in terms of water temperatures and visibility, however, are during the late summer and early autumn months. From July through October, water temperatures typically range from about 75 to 85 degrees Fahrenheit. Cabo Pulmo is the recommended regional dive site during peak season, offering access to the spectacular coral reef, as well as the densest accumulation of fish and other marine life in the Sea of Cortez (over 800 species, thanks to its protected status as a national marine park and UNESCO World Heritage Site).

Help Protect Endangered Sea Turtles

Five of the world’s seven endangered sea turtle species come to Baja California to lay their eggs–the green turtle, hawksbill, loggerhead, olive riddle and leatherback (the largest sea turtle and the world’s fastest aquatic reptile)–with local conservation agencies and some area resorts offering opportunities to assist in the hatchling process. Why is this help so important? Although mature sea turtles are long-lived and have few predators, they are in great danger during their initial journey away from the nest, extremely vulnerable to predators on both land and sea. The help visitors give, in other words, contributes to the long lives of hatchlings, and also to the continuation of these remarkable species. In Los Cabos, sea turtle season begins in late August.

Hooked On Cabo:  First Look at Top Fishing Tournaments in Los Cabos in 2022

There are still 287 days left until the 2022 edition of Bisbee’s Black and Blue, the “World’s Richest Fishing Tournament” and the marquee event held annually in Los Cabos.

But some of the other top fishing tournaments come sooner…and in any case, it’s never too early to start making plans to go destination fishing. Particularly when the tournaments offer such an impressive range of cash and prizes.

With that in mind, here’s an early look at some of the top tournaments on the 2022 fishing tournament calendar in Los Cabos.

East Cape Dorado Shoot Out – July 16th, 2022

The combined jackpot prizes here typically average $130,000. Entry is $600 per team.

Bisbee’s East Cape Offshore – August 2nd to 6th, 2022

The East Cape Offshore is always first, and kicks off Bisbee’s 2022 series starting August 2nd. Cash prizes will be awarded to the top three qualifiers in marlin, tuna and dorado categories, with the awards celebration taking place afterwards at the Hotel Buena Vista. In 2021, a record 97 teams competed for $1,582,975. The 97 teams beat the previous year’s record of 72 by 25, while the ECO topped the previous year’s record payout by nearly half a million dollars. Base entry for the event is $1500 per team, with additional fees for daily jackpots ($32,000 “across the board”).

East Cape Gold Cup Wahoo Jackpot Tournament – August 20th, 2022

Similar to the East Cape Dorado Shootout with its drive-away first prize, the biggest wahoo caught on August 21st will earn one lucky fisherman a showroom fresh 2022 Volkswagen Polo. In total, over $100,000 in cash and prizes are expected to be up for grabs, including great raffle prizes, return trips, fishing outings, and much more. The entry fee is only $600 per team and includes dinner at the awards ceremony.

Los Cabos Billfish Tournament – October 16th to 20th, 2022

Just as September is El Mes de la Patria, the “the country’s month,” in Mexico, October is the month of the fishing tournament in Cabo San Lucas. Bisbee’s two cash-rich tournaments–the Los Cabos Offshore and Black & Blue–get most of the publicity, but the Los Cabos Billfish Tournament also sends out a siren call to big-game fishermen eager for big-money prizes and jackpots. Team Sneak Attack led by owner Shawn Guttersen and captain Vicente Bojorquez captured first place and the largest marlin jackpot in the 2021 LCBT, as well as an invitation to Quepos for the Costa Offshore World Championship to go along with the cool $498,140, in prize money, after bagging a 554 lb. black marlin. The latter wasn’t quite as big as the 593 lb. black marlin that won Team El Suertudo top honors in 2020, but considering it only took a single day (due to weather conditions) for Sneak Attack to top last year’s winning check of 344,700, no one was complaining! Base entry in 2022 is $5,000 per team, or 25,000 all-in, across-the-board for all jackpots and prizes.

Bisbee’s Los Cabos Offshore – October 20th to 23rd, 2022

Commonly known as “Little Bisbee’s,” to differentiate it from the “Big Bisbee’s” Black & Blue marlin fishing tournament that also takes place each October in Los Cabos, the Los Cabos Offshore dates back to 2002, and is considered a more laid-back, charity focused endeavor than the Black & Blue…despite the massive payouts on the line. In 2021, for example, 187 teams competed for $1,965,200, smashing the previous marks of 128 teams and $1,457,000 in payouts. Cash prizes are awarded to the teams with the three biggest qualifying fish in the game and billfish categories at the LCO, and large amounts of fish/meals are always donated to local families in need. Base entry for teams is $1,500 U.S., with $22,500 necessary for “across the board” entry in all jackpots and challenges. The Early Bird Deadline for the LCO this year is August 31st.

Bisbee’s Black & Blue – October 25th to 29th, 2022

Oft billed as “The World’s Richest Fishing Tournament,” thanks to its million dollar payouts, this marlin fishing tournament originally premiered in 1981, and remains to this day the highest profile annual event in Los Cabos. If you wonder why, consider the 2021 tournament, when the 2020 records of 127 teams for $4.6 million were completely obliterated as 198 teams competed for the $9,725,000 in cash on the line. Base entry for this millionaire maker is $5,000 U.S. per team, and requires a $71,500 U.S. outlay across all categories, jackpots and challenges. Prizes are awarded for the top five catches of black and blue marlin, assuming they meet the minimum standards (300 lbs.). Early Bird Deadline this year, as for the LCO, is August 31st.

5 Reasons Your New Year’s Resolution for 2022 Should Be to Spend More Time in Los Cabos

It’s that time of year again: resolution season. Each year in January, as soon as the last New Year’s Eve firework has exploded and the last Champagne bottle has been popped, people’s thoughts inevitably begin turning to New Year’s resolutions.

Often such resolutions are aspirational ideas like “join a gym,” a perfectly understandable sentiment, by the way, after the many dinners and celebrations that traditionally characterize the holiday season. Of course resolutions should be geared towards making our lives healthier and more enjoyable, and rededicating ourselves in that direction is always salutary.

But resolutions can also be a bit more ambitious, a bit bolder than simply deciding to work out a few more times each week. Resolutions are in essence a way to refocus on the big picture. What are the things we care most about? What are the things that bring the greatest amount of joy into our lives? Where do we feel the happiest?

The latter question actually opens up an entire new field when it comes to New Year’s resolutions. Instead of “join a gym” it could be “spend more time on the beach”; or, more specifically, “spend more time in Los Cabos.”

With its year-round sunshine and diverse geography – ocean, beach, desert and mountains – Los Cabos offers world-class conditions for virtually every outdoor sport imaginable. So if getting in shape is your focus, there are few better places on Earth to do so.

But the wonder of cape cities Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo, and the reason this is such a magical idea for a resolution, is that they also offer so much more…

Which is why, for many people, this is their happy place. Perhaps in 2022, it will become your happy place as well.

With that in mind, here are five of our favorite reasons for spending as much time as possible in Los Cabos in 2022.

Amazing Golf

Los Cabos is home to an astounding 18 golf courses, including world-class layouts from big-name designers like Jack Nicklaus, Tiger Woods, Greg Norman, Fred Couples and Davis Love III. Norman’s course at Rancho San Lucas is the newest to open, followed by Robert Trent Jones Jr’s Costa Palmas Golf Club on the Los Cabos municipality’s East Cape. But with the exception of Vidanta, whose 9-hole layout is a throwback to an earlier era, the remaining 17 courses all offer an incredible destination experience, with world-class golf and magnificent views of ocean, beaches, mountains and desert.

Amazing Fishing

Cabo San Lucas as a tourist destination was built on big-game sport fishing, and although conditions are good for his premier local attraction on a year-round basis, summer and fall are the best seasons to get your hooks into massive billfish like blue and black marlin. That’s why the big-money tournaments are all scheduled during these two seasons. Don’t want to participate in a tournament? Just charter a boat for a day…or half-day. Virtually every local restaurant offers “you hook it, we cook it” specials and will prepare your catch any way you like it.

Amazing Vacation Rentals

Whether you’re traveling with that special someone, with your kids, with extended family, or with a group of friends for a destination golf or fishing trip, vacation rentals in Los Cabos offer far more options than resorts in terms of finding the right fit. For a couple, perhaps an ocean view penthouse condo is the perfect choice. For a family or larger groups, perhaps a beachfront home is preferred, or a luxury villa with commanding Land’s End views. With vacation rentals, it’s not just the size that’s optional, but the amenities and the location…which can be tailored to your personal vacation plans. Which is why discerning travelers always opt for luxury villas or vacation rentals over resorts. The privacy and security are nice, too.

Amazing Dining Experiences

The Los Cabos culinary scene has grown exponentially since the early days of tourism in the region some 50 years ago. Back then, fine dining was something of a foreign concept. Freshly caught seafood and a few regional Mexican specialty dishes were standard dinner fare after a day spent fishing or beachcombing. In today’s Los Cabos, both the dining and activities options are decidedly more cosmopolitan. Los Cabos has not forgotten its roots – the region’s thriving farm-to-table scene, for example, is premised on fresh local ingredients – but it has allowed those roots to spread far and wide. What has emerged is a world-class culinary destination that boasts acclaimed chefs and creative fusions, as well as the fish tacos and Damiana margaritas that long-time Los Cabos regulars know and love.

Amazing Beaches

Los Cabos has more blue flag beaches (22) than any other destination in Mexico, and blue flags are notable for ensuring a host of services and amenities like bathrooms, handicap access, informative signs, etc. But if all you’re looking for is a wide swath of golden sand, the opportunities then become endless. That’s the way it goes when you have more than 100 miles of coastline – as the Los Cabos municipality does – and the sun shines more than 350 days a year. Enjoy it! Pack a towel, lather on a little sunblock, and feel the Cabo vibes wash over you. You’re in your happy place!

After a Record-Shattering 2021 Fishing Tournament Season in Los Cabos, Bisbee’s Announces 2022 Dates

After a record-breaking year in 2020 in the midst of a global pandemic, all eyes were on Bisbee’s trio of marlin fishing tournaments to smash expectations again in 2021. They did not disappoint, leading the way to the greatest fishing tournament season in Los Cabos history.

The records started falling in the East Cape Offshore in August, when a record 97 teams competed for $1,582,975. The 97 teams beat the previous year’s record of 72 by 25, while the ECO topped the previous year’s record payout by nearly half a million dollars.

But that was only the beginning. Then came the Los Cabos Offshore, where 187 teams competed for $1,965,200, smashing the previous marks of 128 teams and $1,457,000 in payouts.

The big news, however, came in the biggest tournament of them all, the Black and Blue, where the 2020 records of 127 teams for $4.6 million were completely obliterated…blown out of the water by the massive turnout for the 41st edition of the “Super Bowl of Fishing” in 2021: 198 teams, $9,725,000 in cash on the line.

It was a remarkable year, but then again, that seems to be the case every year now with Bisbee’s tournaments, and more great things are looming on the horizon. Here’s an early look at 2022, with the respective dates to save.

Base entry for the event is $1500 per team, with additional fees for daily jackpots ($32,000 “across the board”). The earlier you enter the more chances you have to win, as for each month prior to the deadline that you enter, you will receive an additional chip in the drawing. For example, if you enter 6 months prior you will receive six chips in the drawing. The free entry is good for the following year only and is non-transferable.

Los Cabos by the Numbers: Destination Achieves Full Tourism Recovery with Positive Projections Ahead

Fueled by the destination’s strong vaccination program and strict safety protocols, Los Cabos forecasts to close the year surpassing pre-pandemic tourism levels. It’s an incredibly positive development given the circumstances, as Los Cabos’ business leaders – from the Tourism Board on down – have helped to drive the destination to a complete recovery of travel and tourism activity. In fact, the latest numbers show a 20% growth in tourism arrivals in the last quarter from Jul. – Sep. 2021 when compared to the same period in 2019.

In September 2021, Los Cabos recorded nearly 118,000 international arrivals, making it the most successful September on record, with a 40% increase in international arrivals compared to 2019. To date, Los Cabos is Mexico’s leading destination in tourism recovery, nearly 20 percentage points higher in visitation recovery in September 2021 compared to Mexico’s other top tourism destinations.

As a result of this recovery, the destination has been able to recuperate all of its formal hospitality jobs, which are critical to the tourism sector of Los Cabos. The destination’s commitment to efforts that support the well-being of the community and visitors have been foundational to its successful recovery and capability to offer a safer travel environment. This includes strong COVID-19 health and safety protocols, and community adoption of the destination’s vaccination program, which has led to close to 90% of the population ages 18 and over having received at least one dose to date.

“The COVID-19 pandemic has been challenging for travel destinations across the world and we are energized to see Los Cabos achieve a full recovery since tourism is at the heart of what we do,” said Rodrigo Esponda, Managing Director of the Los Cabos Tourism Board. “We will hold tight to the health and safety efforts that got us here. As we head into the holiday season of higher travel activity, it’s our goal to continue to offer the same safer travel environment.”

Looking ahead, there is a 45% increase in scheduled seats from the U.S. to the Los Cabos International Airport over the next six months – November 2021 to April 2022 – when compared to the same timeframe in 2019 – 2020. Forecasted bookings for the final winter months of 2021 are estimated to boost the destination so that it not only reaches but surpasses pre-pandemic levels – an approximate 2.8 million annual visitors. Los Cabos is continuing to see the trend of short booking windows with reservations being made only one month out.

In 2021, Los Cabos travelers have been most interested in a mix of outdoor adventure, luxury and personalized experiences that are environmentally safe and give back to the local community. Going into 2022, the destination expects to continue to see an increase in conscious travelers looking for sustainable and environmentally friendly experiences. This includes activities such as farm-to-table dining and sea turtle preservation programs. Also, all tourists and the local community are encouraged to help maintain, respect and conserve Los Cabos’ 22 Blue Flag-certified beaches – renowned for their superior cleanliness, water quality and security.

Through the year and a half of the pandemic, Los Cabos’ business model – which combines the efforts of the private and public sectors – has proven to be a successful strategy to drive tourism recovery. The collaborative approach between state authorities and tourism partners has allowed the destination to not only quickly respond to the ongoing crisis, but also to identify new streams of business opportunities and niche markets to accommodate the evolving habits of travelers around the world.
