Pelagic Triple Crown of Fishing to Kick Off Summer Fishing Season in Los Cabos

It’s official. We’re now just a little more than two months away from the start of fishing tournament season in Los Cabos, as the summer slate of events kicks off June 2 – 5 with the Pelagic Triple Crown of Fishing.

It’s great news for fishermen and fisherwomen, as well as for those who simply love Los Cabos.  After two record breaking years of fishing tournaments, excitement is at an all-time high for 2022. Bisbee’s trio of tournaments offered a combined 13.2 million in prize money last year, breaking all the records previously set in 2020. It’s expected records for attendance and payouts in these and other tournaments will be broken again this year.

And it all starts with the estimated $500,000 on the line for the 8th Triple Crown of Fishing Tournament in Cabo San Lucas. Fifty teams and 213 anglers competed in 2021, with Team Laguna Madre taking first place in the billfish division, breaking the tournament record for prize money in the process, with a winner’s share of $131,000 out of the combined half a million dollar prize pool. Over 140 billfish were documented during the course of last year’s tournament.

So those are numbers to beat in 2022, and the rules remain the same. There are two categories: billfish and gamefish. Species eligible in the former category include blue, black and striped marlin, as well as sailfish, spearfish and swordfish. Of these, blue marlin, black marlin and swordfish are the most valuable, counting 300 points per properly documented catch and release. Striped marlin, sailfish and spearfish count 100 points each. Documentation is done via video evidence and radio verification.

Game fish like tuna, dorado and wahoo, meanwhile, are assigned points at the rate of one point per pound. A 30 lb. wahoo, for example, is worth 30 points.

There are four divisions for daily jackpots. Billfish jackpots are paid out according to the most billfish release points each day, while tuna, dorado and wahoo jackpots are paid out based on the single heaviest fish caught of each species, each day.

We mentioned fishermen and fisherwomen earlier and this was not mere political correctness. A future sport fishing superstar, 8-year-old Evelyn Schultz from Detroit, boated a 30.2 lb. yellowfin tuna solo to win a daily jackpot in the 2019 event; and Kim Bullman’s performance in 2021 was even more impressive. She took home the awards for Top Female and Top Overall Angler, helping to propel Team Laguna Madre to their first place finish by accounting for 800 of their 1300 points.

Both the kick-off party and the post-tournament awards ceremony this year will be held at Baja Cantina on the Marina, also the headquarters for Bisbee’s fishing tournaments in Cabo San Lucas. Registration for the event is open now, and will remain open until June 10th, the day before fishing officially begins. Base entry is $3,500 per team (up to six anglers), with $72,500 across-the-board for all jackpots and challenges. Prize money is tied to the number of teams entered, of course, but a reasonable expectation relative to 2021 puts the estimate in the 500,000 overall range for this year’s Pelagic Triple Crown of Fishing Tournament.

Celebration of a City: Art Walk and the Traditional Fiestas of San Jose del Cabo

The Covid pandemic has not produced any lasting damage to tourism in Los Cabos. In fact, as we’ve detailed in our “Los Cabos by the Numbers” series in recent months, thanks to increased flights and strong U.S. visitation the region has not just regained but surpassed 2019 pre-pandemic tourism levels.

It’s a rather remarkable story, really. But despite the strong recovery of the tourism sector at large, there is one area that has continued to lag behind: events. The reasons are obvious, of course. Cape cities Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo have never wavered in their commitment to the health and safety of tourists and residents alike, remaining at the forefront of all Mexican destinations in terms of pandemic-related protocols, testing, and vaccination programs.

Social distancing has been an important component of these protocols, naturally, and as a consequence the principles of social distancing have affected every business and every public space in the region, from bars and restaurants to boats and beaches. Depending on the existing “system alert level” put in place each week by local authorities in response to the ongoing Covid crisis, businesses or public areas can accommodate only so many people relative to their available space to ensure the safety of guests.

For events, then, the health and safety protocols have been difficult in the extreme to navigate. Events by their very nature are “public gatherings”, and thus pose a challenge to social distancing protocols. Some prominent local events, like fishing and golf tournaments, have scarcely skipped a beat since they have a natural, built-in social distancing component. But other types of events, from food festivals to music concerts, have struggled to return. The ability to bounce back, thus far – despite the very positive signs that point toward a complete pandemic recovery in the future – have been contingent upon the ability of events to work within the existing, often variable, health and safety framework.

Golf and fishing tournaments, as mentioned, have been able to thrive within these parameters. So too have some cultural events, so long as they’ve conformed to health and safety standards established for businesses and public spaces. For instance, the return in 2021 of popular, ongoing, regularly-scheduled cultural festivals like Art Walk in San Jose del Cabo and Viva La Plaza in Cabo San Lucas. These events have, since their return a year ago, consistently offered lively, fun-filled showcases for local art and culture, and have been gratefully welcomed back by residents and visitors alike.

Downtown San Jose del Cabo, after all, is rarely livelier or more beautiful than during Art Walk. Perhaps this is because Art Walk is, at heart, a celebration of San Jose del Cabo itself. The city comes alive in a different way on Thursday evenings during Art Walk season (November through June).

The Gallery District, home to dozens of art galleries and studios, is the center of Art Walk, and remains the primary focus, as gallery owners and artists stay open late to interact with visitors. But the entire downtown area of the city glows with lights and pulses with energy. The town square, Plaza Mijares, becomes an outdoor gallery for street artists and craftspeople, with their wares laid out for all to see. The old Catholic church, Parroquia San Jose, is open for those who want to visit a more traditional site for art and culture than local galleries. City Hall, with its colorful courtyard murals depicting great moments in local and national history, also beckons those on an informal walking tour of the heart of the city.

Indeed, it’s not too extravagant to say that not only is Art Walk a tradition in San Jose del Cabo, it’s a profoundly important cultural and historical institution.

But it isn’t the only local event of such cultural importance. In fact, there’s an annual event, or series of events actually, that are even more of a showcase for the city’s heritage and history. That would be the fiestas tradicionales, which after a two-year Covid related absence are making (health situation permitting) their much awaited return on March 17 – 20, 2022.

For tourists, and particularly U.S. born visitors, here’s the necessary background to know: During the Spanish colonial period, many towns in Baja California and elsewhere in Mexico and Latin America were named according to the Catholic calendar. San Jose del Cabo’s first Spanish name, for instance, was San Bernabe, so named by Sebastian Vizcaino when he landed there on June 11, 1602, during the traditional Catholic feast day for Saint Barnabas. San Bernabe replaced Añuití, the name given to the place by the indigenous Pericues, and was itself later replaced by San Jose del Cabo, the name of the Jesuit mission that opened in 1730.

The city’s fiestas tradicionales, or fiestas patronales (as the patron saint festivals are typically known in Spanish), have in past years encompassed a week or more of celebrations, including parades, live music, regional food and drinks (the ceviche preparation contest was an annual highlight), plus the coronation of an event king and queen. These festivities invariably culminated on March 19, the official feast day of Saint Joseph.

This year, the festivities will actually conclude on the 20th, the day following the feast day of Saint Joseph. And instead of a week of parties, there will be four days. And instead of abundant music and food, it’s expected that these elements of the celebration will be more moderately represented, with enhanced focus on literary contests like the Juegos Florales, which rewards compositions about the founding of the mission, and the importance of Saint Joseph in the foundation of the city.

The most important thing to note, of course, is that these events dedicated to the cultural history and identity of San Jose del Cabo are back, and their return marks another important step forward in the recovery of Los Cabos. It’s yet another indicator that Los Cabos as a destination, and the world at large, are slowly and gradually regaining a much needed sense of normalcy.

That’s the big picture. For visitors and local residents, it just means more fiestas to enjoy during 2022! So continue to mark Thursdays on your event calendar for Art Walk in San Jose del Cabo, Fridays for Viva La Plaza in Cabo San Lucas, and circle March 17 – 20 for the triumphant return of the Fiestas Tradicionales in San Jose del Cabo.

Valentine’s Day & Other Celebrations: February Events in Los Cabos

February is a fantastic time to visit Los Cabos. The weather is absolutely perfect, a 75 degrees and sunny antidote to the winter conditions found throughout much of the U.S. and Canada. The beaches are beautiful. Seasonal events like whale watching and swimming with whale sharks offer incredible opportunities for outdoor activities and adventures. And, it must be added, February is typically a very good month for events in cape cities Cabo San Lucas, San Jose del Cabo, and beyond.

In terms of events, February’s marquee highlight, as in many other destinations, is Valentine’s Day. Los Cabos is a romance capital, and coastal restaurants and beachfront resorts go all out in their romantic preparations for this romantic couples’ celebration. The most notable example is probably the traditional 7-course feast at Sunset Monalisa, famed for its breathtaking views of Land’s End as the sun goes down.

Valentine’s Day may be internationally observed, but other events this February are of the “only in Cabo” variety. These include two weekly (and locally beloved) cultural attractions: Art Walk, a Thursday night staple in San Jose del Cabo’s historic Gallery District; and Viva La Plaza, which showcases music, art and dancing every Friday evening in Cabo San Lucas’ town square, Plaza Amelia Wilkes.

Todos Santos, in the neighboring La Paz municipality, also offers a variety of cultural events each year, including highly anticipated to-dos focused around music, art, writing and film. February brings the annual Open Studios Tour, in which local painters, sculptors, jewelers, potters and ceramists welcome visitors for an up-close look at the creative process in one of Mexico’s most famous artists’ colonies.

Art Walk in San Jose del Cabo – February 3, 10, 17, 24

The historic Gallery District in San Jose del Cabo takes center stage each Thursday evening during high tourist season–November through June–when residents and visitors alike are invited to stroll its cobblestone streets and peruse the many eclectic fine arts galleries. Art Walk hours are 5 to 9 p.m., when the neighborhood comes alive with wine, cheese and guided tours, as well as colorful street artists and strolling mariachis.

Viva La Plaza in Cabo San Lucas – February 7, 14, 21, 28

Art Walk may be the premier weekly cultural event in San Jose del Cabo, but Viva La Plaza holds that distinction in Cabo San Lucas. Held each Friday evening from 6 to 10 p.m. in the Land’s End city’s principal plaza – Plaza Amelia Wilkes – this weekly showcase lures visitors with regional paintings and handicrafts, artfully arrayed around the recently renovated square’s charming central gazebo. Live music and traditional Mexican dance are also big draws, as are food stalls featuring tasty Mexican favorites.

Todos Santos Open Studio Tour – February 4th to 6th

Ever since painter Charles Stewart and his wife Mary Lou moved to Todos Santos in 1985, the town has been famed for its thriving artists’ colony. The best introduction to the region’s abundance of talented artists is the yearly Open Studios Tour, the 13th version of which is scheduled for Feb. 4 – 6, 2022. Dozens of local artists are expected participate, including painters, sculptors, photographers, muralists, plein air painters, encaustic artists, jewelers, printmakers, collage artists, potters, and wood turners. The three-day to-do is expected to include a wine and cheese event at Doce Cuarenta Café on Feb. 4th, as well as a get together at El Mercado Ranchero on Feb. 5th and 6th.

Valentine’s Day– February 14

Romance is ever present in Los Cabos, from pampering couples-focused spa treatments to Champagne amenities and sunset dinners for two. As the name suggests, the latter is a signature highlight at Sunset Monalisa. This year, as always, the fine dining favorite is going all out for Valentine’s Day, pairing a seven course tasting menu from Chef Hector Morales with live music, surprise amenities, and of course the restaurant’s trademark spectacular views of Land’s End as the sun goes down. Reservations are essential for the tasting menu, priced at $220 per person, but those who miss out on preferred seating needn’t worry. Romantic seaside restaurants abound in the cape cities; of special note, Waldorf Astoria Pedregal Los Cabos’ stunning El Farallon, with its dramatic setting of tables and Champagne Terrace perched above crashing Pacific Ocean waves.

Cabo Collegiate Golf Tournament – February 27th to March 1st

This one’s for the youngsters only, but definitely worth watching and cheering for. Arizona State won the 2020 Cabo Collegiate by 8 strokes, besting Texas A&M on the spectacular Tom Fazio designed course at Querencia, one of the most exclusive and acclaimed private courses in Los Cabos. Who’ll win in 2022 (due to travel restrictions, the 2021 tournament was hosted in the U.S.) when the setting shifts to the even more exclusive and acclaimed Ocean Course at Cabo del Sol, a Jack Nicklaus designed masterpiece that has been a staple of world top 100 rankings for over two decades? Too early to guess, but over 15 top teams from U.S. universities will compete in the three round event, including defending champion Oklahoma, Cal and Stanford, Ole Miss and Florida State, as well as former tournament champions Arizona State and Oklahoma State.

Hooked On Cabo:  First Look at Top Fishing Tournaments in Los Cabos in 2022

There are still 287 days left until the 2022 edition of Bisbee’s Black and Blue, the “World’s Richest Fishing Tournament” and the marquee event held annually in Los Cabos.

But some of the other top fishing tournaments come sooner…and in any case, it’s never too early to start making plans to go destination fishing. Particularly when the tournaments offer such an impressive range of cash and prizes.

With that in mind, here’s an early look at some of the top tournaments on the 2022 fishing tournament calendar in Los Cabos.

East Cape Dorado Shoot Out – July 16th, 2022

This is one of the largest fishing tournaments in Southern Baja, with an average turnout of 130 teams each year. What makes it so popular? The opportunity to win a brand new, fully-loaded 2022 Volkswagen 4×4 Amarok pickup truck, of course. The rules are simple, catch the biggest dorado on July 16th and you win the truck. There will also be great prizes for 2nd and 3rd place, as well as for the largest tuna and largest wahoo caught that day. The beauty of this one-day tournament format is that anyone can win. After the tournament, Palmas De Cortez in Los Barriles will host the award ceremony, which is unlike any in Baja, with dinner, music, a raffle, and more. The combined jackpot prizes here typically average $130,000. Entry is $600 per team.

Bisbee’s East Cape Offshore – August 2nd to 6th, 2022

The East Cape Offshore is always first, and kicks off Bisbee’s 2022 series starting August 2nd. Cash prizes will be awarded to the top three qualifiers in marlin, tuna and dorado categories, with the awards celebration taking place afterwards at the Hotel Buena Vista. In 2021, a record 97 teams competed for $1,582,975. The 97 teams beat the previous year’s record of 72 by 25, while the ECO topped the previous year’s record payout by nearly half a million dollars. Base entry for the event is $1500 per team, with additional fees for daily jackpots ($32,000 “across the board”). Prize money is based on entry fees received, with 60% going to the billfish winners, and 20% each to top tuna and dorado anglers. For first-timers, each tournament in the Bisbee’s series has an Early Bird Drawing. The winner of the drawing gets a free entry to the following year’s tournament. To be eligible the paid entry (base entry only) must be received by the Early Bird Deadline (June 30th, 2022 for the ECO).

East Cape Gold Cup Wahoo Jackpot Tournament – August 20th, 2022

Similar to the East Cape Dorado Shootout with its drive-away first prize, the biggest wahoo caught on August 21st will earn one lucky fisherman a showroom fresh 2022 Volkswagen Polo. In total, over $100,000 in cash and prizes are expected to be up for grabs, including great raffle prizes, return trips, fishing outings, and much more. The entry fee is only $600 per team and includes dinner at the awards ceremony.

Los Cabos Billfish Tournament – October 16th to 20th, 2022

 Just as September is El Mes de la Patria, the “the country’s month,” in Mexico, October is the month of the fishing tournament in Cabo San Lucas. Bisbee’s two cash-rich tournaments–the Los Cabos Offshore and Black & Blue–get most of the publicity, but the Los Cabos Billfish Tournament also sends out a siren call to big-game fishermen eager for big-money prizes and jackpots. Team Sneak Attack led by owner Shawn Guttersen and captain Vicente Bojorquez captured first place and the largest marlin jackpot in the 2021 LCBT, as well as an invitation to Quepos for the Costa Offshore World Championship to go along with the cool $498,140, in prize money, after bagging a 554 lb. black marlin. The latter wasn’t quite as big as the 593 lb. black marlin that won Team El Suertudo top honors in 2020, but considering it only took a single day (due to weather conditions) for Sneak Attack to top last year’s winning check of 344,700, no one was complaining! Base entry in 2022 is $5,000 per team, or 25,000 all-in, across-the-board for all jackpots and prizes.

Bisbee’s Los Cabos Offshore – October 20th to 23rd, 2022

 Commonly known as “Little Bisbee’s,” to differentiate it from the “Big Bisbee’s” Black & Blue marlin fishing tournament that also takes place each October in Los Cabos, the Los Cabos Offshore dates back to 2002, and is considered a more laid-back, charity focused endeavor than the Black & Blue…despite the massive payouts on the line. In 2021, for example, 187 teams competed for $1,965,200, smashing the previous marks of 128 teams and $1,457,000 in payouts. Cash prizes are awarded to the teams with the three biggest qualifying fish in the game and billfish categories at the LCO, and large amounts of fish/meals are always donated to local families in need. Base entry for teams is $1,500 U.S., with $22,500 necessary for “across the board” entry in all jackpots and challenges. The Early Bird Deadline for the LCO this year is August 31st.

Bisbee’s Black & Blue – October 25th to 29th, 2022

 Oft billed as “The World’s Richest Fishing Tournament,” thanks to its million dollar payouts, this marlin fishing tournament originally premiered in 1981, and remains to this day the highest profile annual event in Los Cabos. If you wonder why, consider the 2021 tournament, when the 2020 records of 127 teams for $4.6 million were completely obliterated as 198 teams competed for the $9,725,000 in cash on the line. Base entry for this millionaire maker is $5,000 U.S. per team, and requires a $71,500 U.S. outlay across all categories, jackpots and challenges. Prizes are awarded for the top five catches of black and blue marlin, assuming they meet the minimum standards (300 lbs.). Early Bird Deadline this year, as for the LCO, is August 31st.

What’s Happening in the New Year 2022:  January Events in Los Cabos

Even before the champagne bottles pop and the fireworks explode over Medano Beach, expectations are already high for what the New Year will bring to always sunny Los Cabos.

Despite travel concerns over the latest Covid variant, Los Cabos has already regained and exceeded pre-pandemic tourist numbers with a simple formula: safety first, last and always.  Los Cabos was the first Pacific destination to receive the Travel Safety Stamp from the World Travel and Tourism Council, and continues to lead the way among all Mexican tourist destinations with its forward-thinking health and safety guidelines.

Luckily, safety and fun aren’t mutually exclusive.

Large-scale events are still in hiatus as 2022 dawns, but smaller events –particularly those with a built-in social distancing element, like golf or fishing tournaments – continue to be held, with often spectacular results. After another record shattering season for Bisbee’s fishing tournaments, for example, golf season now tees off with the upcoming Los Cabos Pro-Am in January.

Cultural events also continue to be a popular activities option for visitors, none more so than the weekly art-focused to-dos in each of the cape cities: Art Walk in San Jose del Cabo, and Viva La Plaza in Cabo San Lucas. Todos Santos, a popular day-trip destination from Los Cabos, also beckons with its series of annual cultural events celebrating, music, literature, art and cinema.

And, of course, there’s the biggest event of them all – whale watching – which is in peak season throughout January.

Art Walk in San Jose del Cabo – Jan. 6, 13, 20, 27

The historic Gallery District in San Jose del Cabo takes center stage each Thursday evening during high tourist season–November through June–when residents and visitors alike are invited to stroll its cobblestone streets and peruse the many eclectic fine arts galleries. Art Walk hours are 5 to 9 p.m., when the neighborhood comes alive with wine, cheese and guided tours, as well as colorful street artists and strolling mariachis.

Viva La Plaza in Cabo San Lucas – Jan. 7, 14, 21, 28

Art Walk may be the premier weekly cultural event in San Jose del Cabo, but Viva La Plaza holds that distinction in Cabo San Lucas. Held each Friday evening from 6 to 10 p.m. in the Land’s End city’s principal plaza – Plaza Amelia Wilkes – this weekly showcase lures visitors with regional paintings and handicrafts, artfully arrayed around the recently renovated square’s charming central gazebo. Live music and traditional Mexican dance are also big draws, as are food stalls featuring tasty Mexican favorites.

Los Cabos Pro-Am Golf Tournament – Jan. 9th to 13th

The Los Cabos Pro-Am, long a fixture on the regional golf calendar, has seen some changes this year…and they’re good! The tournament had been split up into two separate events last year, each on acclaimed local layouts – at Twin Dolphin and Cabo del Sol. This year, the two courses are both included in the same tournament. The action begins with two rounds at the Tom Weiskopf designed Desert Course at Cabo del Sol, and concludes with a final round at Twin Dolphin, a design collaboration by Todd Eckenrode and legendary player and former Masters Champion Fred Couples that premiered in 2018. Teams consist of 5 players – 4 amateurs and one pro – with participants competing in a best ball format over 54 holes for daily and overall prizes (for both teams and pros). Entry fees include luxurious accommodation packages at local resorts.

Tropic of Cancer Concert Series – January 12th to 16th

Former R.E.M. guitarist Peter Buck pioneered jam culture in Todos Santos with this acclaimed music festival, which brought in high-profile musicians for performances at the landmark Hotel California, as well as the town’s picturesque main plaza. Buck’s festival went on hiatus after he made some controversial comments about local politics at the 2016 event, but his musical legacy lives on. The annual Tropic of Cancer Concert Series premiered in 2017 and, after a pandemic hiatus in 2021, returns for its sixth anniversary in 2022. This year’s festival is sponsored by Baja Brewing Company, and boasts an all-star lineup featuring Mother Hips, Susto, Cordovas, Holy Spirits, The Jag, La Victoria, The Charities, and many others.
Todos Santos Writers Workshop – Jan. 30th to Feb. 5th; Feb. 7th to 11th

Best known for its painters, Todos Santos has also proved a congenial community for writers. The 9th annual writers workshop returns to the atmospheric Casa Dracula–an historic 19th century hacienda–where creative writers are encouraged with seminars and speakers, publishing roundtables, and a variety of craft workshops that focus on fiction, non-fiction, memoir, poetry and other literary genres. A second weeklong session is optional for those who want to dig deeper or explore an alternative writing genre, and special online sessions are also available. Instructors for this year’s workshops include Natalie Serber (fiction), Jeanne McCulloch (memoir), Karen Karbo (memoir), Christopher Merrill (poetry) and Rex Weiner (writing strategies for getting started or “unstuck”).

Whale Watching Season  – Mid-December to Mid-April

Each winter some 5,000 to 10,000 blue, gray, humpback and other whales migrate from their arctic feeding grounds to breed in the shallow water coves and inlets of beautiful Baja California Sur. In this regard these leviathans of the deep are very much like the snowbirds who flock to cape cities Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo to escape frigid winter temperatures in the U.S. and Canada. The only real difference–aside from the obvious anatomical ones–is one of scale. The longest mammalian migration ever recorded was in 2014, when a gray whale dubbed Varvara traveled over 14,000 miles round-trip from Russia to Cabo San Lucas. Humpbacks, however, are the most commonly seen whale in Los Cabos waters. The season officially starts on December 15th and extends through mid-April, with a variety of tour options available.

Windsurfing and Kiteboarding Season – Mid-November to Mid-March

Each winter, from mid-November through mid-March, strong El Norte winds blow hundreds of miles down the Sea of Cortés, creating ideal wind and kite surfing conditions in many coastal areas of Baja California Sur. During this yearly breezy season, small East Cape communities like Los Barriles and La Ventana become meccas for world-class kitesurfers, kiteboarders and windsurfers, who flock to regional beaches for a chance to grab big air over offshore waves.

Los Cabos by the Numbers:  Tourism Statistics and Projections for 2021 – 2022 Continue Positive Upsurge

Statistics don’t always reveal a complete picture, but when you put enough of them together over a larger sample size they do tell a compelling story.

In this case, the story of a destination: Los Cabos.

Based on the latest statistics, for example, it is now quite clear that Los Cabos has achieved a nearly complete recovery of pre-pandemic tourism, in some cases even surpassing numbers from 2019. This despite the fact that tourism numbers for Mexico have been down overall.

And the best part is…there’s still a lot of room to grow. While U.S. tourists have returned to sunny Los Cabos in droves, Canadian tourists have been largely absent since early 2020 due to stricter travel regulations and reduced or suspended flights. However, that’s now changing as flights resume and regulations relax. Flights from Edmonton and Toronto to Los Cabos over the next six months are both expected to exceed 2019 levels.

Cruise ships have also been absent…at least until recently. After a lengthy suspension of service following the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020, cruise ships have now resumed visits to Los Cabos, opening up (or, if you prefer, reopening) another important tourism sector for the destination moving forward.

With this in mind, here are some of the most recent (and most interesting) statistics released by the Los Cabos Tourism Board…

National Travel Numbers for Mexico

  • In Aug. 2021, 2.77 million international tourists arrived in the country (18% fewer than in Aug. 2019). 52% were inbound tourists.
  • In Aug. 2021, the total number of inbound tourists decreased by 29% compared to the previous month.
  • There is an 18% decrease in the total number of inbound tourists compared to Aug. 2019.
  • 85% arrived by air, and 15% did so by land

Travel Numbers for Los Cabos

  • In Aug. 2021, Los Cabos International Airport recorded the arrival of 136,654 international tourists, up 16.2% compared to Aug. 2019. American tourists represent 99.4% of the total.

Passenger Arrivals in Los Cabos

  • In Sep. 2021, Los Cabos International Airport recorded a 30.3% (+47.3 thousand) increase in the total number of passengers arriving at the destination compared to Sep. 2019.
  • Passengers on domestic flights (85.7 thousand) represent 42.1% of total arrivals. These increased by 19.4% (+13.9 thousand vs. Sep. 2019).
  • Passengers on international flights (117.75 thousand) represent 57.9% of total arrivals. These increased by 39.6% (+33.4 thousand vs. Sep. 2019).

Domestic Air Connectivity to Los Cabos

  • There are 721.6 thousand seats scheduled for the next 6 months, 42.6% more compared to the same period in 2019.
  • However, when comparing the seats scheduled for the next 6 months against the 2020 schedule (pandemic), the volume of programmed seats is 47.6% higher.
  • There are 31.7% more available seats expected for Oct. 2021 than those scheduled for Oct. 2019.
  • Mexico City, Guadalajara, and Tijuana are the most relevant issuing markets, having 48%, 13%, and 20% of total available seats (for the next 6 months), followed by Monterrey (9%), Culiacan (7%), Leon (2%), and Hermosillo (1%).
  • Seats from Mexico City, Monterrey, and Tijuana increased by 43%, 9.9%, and 176.5%, respectively (when compared against 2019).
  • For the next 6 months, 51% of the available seats will be provided by Volaris, followed by Viva Aerobus with 33% and Aeromexico with 16%. Interjet has dropped to 0%.

International Air Connectivity to Los Cabos

  • For the U.S., there are 1.37 million seats scheduled to Los Cabos in the next six months, which is 39.1% more seats compared to the same period in 2019.
  • For Oct. 2021, the United States expects 55% more available seats than those scheduled for 2019.
  • Los Angeles (+69.4%), Phoenix (+46%), Houston (+19.4%), Dallas-Fort Worth (+32.6%), Denver (+81.2%), and Seattle (+28.3%) had the most significant increase vs. 2019.
  • However, when comparing the seats scheduled for the next 6 months against the 2020 schedule (pandemic), the volume of programmed seats is 40.5% higher.
  • Los Angeles is the main issuing market in the U.S. (20% of the market), followed by Dallas-Fort Worth (11%), Houston (10%), and Phoenix (9%).
  • American, Alaska, Delta, Southwest, and United Airlines are the most relevant (91% as a whole).
  • When comparing the seats scheduled for the next 6 months against the 2020 schedule (pandemic), the volume of programmed seats is 15.6% higher.

Yacht Activity in Los Cabos

  • 42 yachts arrived at the Port of Cabo San Lucas in Sep. 2021. This represents an increase of 31.3% over the same period in 2019 but a 6.7% decrease compared to 2020.
  • 71% were medium-sized vessels that measured between 50 and 80 feet in length. This vessel size proportion is the highest recorded since 2019.

Cruise Ship Activity in Los Cabos

  • In Aug. 2021, cruises resumed operations in the port of Cabo San Lucas, which recorded the arrival of 1 vessel (Carnival Panorama) with 2,780 passengers.
  • Since then, several major cruise ships have resumed regular service to Los Cabos, including Carnival Miracle and Carnival Panorama; Ruby Princess, Grand Princess and Majestic Princess (Princess Cruise Lines); Norwegian Bliss (Norwegian Cruise Lines); Viking Orion (Viking Cruises); Navigator of the Seas (Royal Caribbean); and MS Koningsdam (Holland America Line).
  • Over the 38 days remaining in 2021, there are 16 cruise ship visits scheduled in Los Cabos.

Tourist Surveys for Los Cabos Visitors

  • In Sep. 2021, 64% of tourists rated their experience in Los Cabos as better than expected.
  • The number of tourists who visited restaurants increased by 77%.

The Fine Art of Cabo: Weekly Cultural Festivals Celebrate the Vibrant Art and Downtown Soul of Los Cabos’ Cape Cities

There are two art and culture celebrations held weekly throughout the high tourist season in Los Cabos: one each in Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo.

Art Walk in San Jose del Cabo has been around longer, so is better known. But for the past five years, Viva La Plaza has been bringing a new kind of attention to the downtown area of Cabo San Lucas.

For decades the Land’s End community has been best known for its fishing and boisterous nightlife. Now, attention is finally being paid to its history and culture, in ways that are both eye-catching and delightful.

Held each Friday from 6 to 10 p.m. during high tourist season – October through May – Viva La Plaza is centered around Plaza Amelia Wilkes, the town square named for a beloved local schoolteacher and political figure who was a leader during a time when few people had ever heard of Cabo San Lucas, and tourism was in its infancy.

The plaza recently underwent a major renovation, with new stonework and garden plantings around its central gazebo, a fresh paint job for the Natural History Museum, and a new statue dedicated to the memory of Amelia Wilkes Cesena. But it’s not just the plaza itself which is now picturesquely pretty. From the hills of Pedregal, which tower beautifully in the background, to the old Catholic church, Parroquia San Lucas Evangelista, and the colorful bars and restaurants that surround the square, this area is now undeniably the most charming in the city.

But the aim of Viva La Plaza is not simply to bring attention to this charming area, but rather to return the town square to its rightful place as a center of social life in Cabo San Lucas, as it was during the heyday of Amelia Wilkes herself. To do this, the organizers of Viva La Plaza have organized their seasonal weekly cultural festival with both locals and tourists in mind, blending art with food, music and dancing.

On Friday nights the streets around Plaza Amelia Wilkes are closed, the streets open or for people to explore the work of local artists (either set up on easels in the street or at nearby galleries like Hector Estrada Art Gallery), to marvel at the performances of costumed street performers, to sample homemade churros or cocktails from neighboring bars, and be entranced by traditional Mexican music and folkloric dancing, which takes place on the stage in front of the Natural History Museum.

One piece of permanent artwork is a giant sign commemorating kilometer marker 0, which is both beautiful and exaggerated, just like life in the southernmost community on the Baja California peninsula!

Less of an explanation is needed for Art Walk in San Jose del Cabo, which is far longer established, and is now practically synonymous with art, culture and a celebration of history in its downtown center.

Each Thursday from 5 to 9 p.m. during high tourist season – November through June – the cobblestone-studded streets of the city’s historic Gallery District come alive with wandering musicians, street artists, locals and visitors. Almost symbolically, the opening of Art Walk season is contemporaneous with the Mexican Day of the Dead (Dia de Muertos), which remembers and celebrates those who have come before with public and private altars called ofrendas.

On Art Walk evenings, gallery owners stay open late to talk with guests, and around the town square of Plaza Mijares are street artists and crafts people with their wares laid out for all to see. The magnificent old Catholic church, Parroquia San Jose, is open for those who want to visit a more traditional altar, and City Hall with its colorful courtyard murals depicting great moments in local and national history also beckons those on an informal walking tour of the heart of the city.

Art Walk is among the most popular romantic activities for visiting couples, blending art and music, fine food and wine. This is an evening for walking and holding hands, for sharing new sights and sounds, each unique and each singularly emblematic of the magic of San Jose del Cabo.

Naturally, the Gallery District and city center are also home to some of the finest bars and restaurants in Los Cabos. The region’s first microbrewery, Baja Brewing Company, maintains its original location in the heart of the Art District. It’s next door to La Lupita, the city’s most famous taquería and mezcal tasting destination. Both are packed on Thursday nights as visitors take a break from gallery hopping.

These are only two of the most popular stops, of course. There are many more, just as there are a wide array of galleries, arts and crafts boutiques and jewelry stores; from those showcasing traditional Mata Ortiz pottery and Huichol animal figures to paintings and sculptures from some of the best contemporary artists.

The only way to see them all is to make Art Walk a regularly scheduled event during your time in Los Cabos. But when you circle Thursday on your calendar, make sure you circle Friday as well. You won’t want to miss what’s happening in Cabo San Lucas!

Los Cabos by the Numbers: Destination Achieves Full Tourism Recovery with Positive Projections Ahead

Fueled by the destination’s strong vaccination program and strict safety protocols, Los Cabos forecasts to close the year surpassing pre-pandemic tourism levels. It’s an incredibly positive development given the circumstances, as Los Cabos’ business leaders – from the Tourism Board on down – have helped to drive the destination to a complete recovery of travel and tourism activity. In fact, the latest numbers show a 20% growth in tourism arrivals in the last quarter from Jul. – Sep. 2021 when compared to the same period in 2019.

In September 2021, Los Cabos recorded nearly 118,000 international arrivals, making it the most successful September on record, with a 40% increase in international arrivals compared to 2019. To date, Los Cabos is Mexico’s leading destination in tourism recovery, nearly 20 percentage points higher in visitation recovery in September 2021 compared to Mexico’s other top tourism destinations.

As a result of this recovery, the destination has been able to recuperate all of its formal hospitality jobs, which are critical to the tourism sector of Los Cabos. The destination’s commitment to efforts that support the well-being of the community and visitors have been foundational to its successful recovery and capability to offer a safer travel environment. This includes strong COVID-19 health and safety protocols, and community adoption of the destination’s vaccination program, which has led to close to 90% of the population ages 18 and over having received at least one dose to date.

“The COVID-19 pandemic has been challenging for travel destinations across the world and we are energized to see Los Cabos achieve a full recovery since tourism is at the heart of what we do,” said Rodrigo Esponda, Managing Director of the Los Cabos Tourism Board. “We will hold tight to the health and safety efforts that got us here. As we head into the holiday season of higher travel activity, it’s our goal to continue to offer the same safer travel environment.”

Looking ahead, there is a 45% increase in scheduled seats from the U.S. to the Los Cabos International Airport over the next six months – November 2021 to April 2022 – when compared to the same timeframe in 2019 – 2020. Forecasted bookings for the final winter months of 2021 are estimated to boost the destination so that it not only reaches but surpasses pre-pandemic levels – an approximate 2.8 million annual visitors. Los Cabos is continuing to see the trend of short booking windows with reservations being made only one month out.

In 2021, Los Cabos travelers have been most interested in a mix of outdoor adventure, luxury and personalized experiences that are environmentally safe and give back to the local community. Going into 2022, the destination expects to continue to see an increase in conscious travelers looking for sustainable and environmentally friendly experiences. This includes activities such as farm-to-table dining and sea turtle preservation programs. Also, all tourists and the local community are encouraged to help maintain, respect and conserve Los Cabos’ 22 Blue Flag-certified beaches – renowned for their superior cleanliness, water quality and security.

Through the year and a half of the pandemic, Los Cabos’ business model – which combines the efforts of the private and public sectors – has proven to be a successful strategy to drive tourism recovery. The collaborative approach between state authorities and tourism partners has allowed the destination to not only quickly respond to the ongoing crisis, but also to identify new streams of business opportunities and niche markets to accommodate the evolving habits of travelers around the world.

High Season Happenings: October Events in Los Cabos

October is the traditional kick-off for high tourist season in Los Cabos, and thus not surprisingly, one of the best months for special events. Big-money marlin fishing tournaments are the stars in this regard, as October sees the return of three highly anticipated tournaments, two of which annually top the million-dollar mark in prize money. The third, Los Cabos Billfish Tournament, is popular and well-respected as well, and certainly no slouch in terms of prize pools, as last year’s payouts totaled nearly three-quarters of a million-dollars. The spotlight shines brightest, however, on Bisbee’s two October fishing tournaments: the Los Cabos Offshore and the Black & Blue, which together offered over six million dollars in prize money in 2020. Even bigger things are expected in 2021.

Here’s a look at these and other event highlights in Los Cabos this October.

Viva La Plaza in Cabo San Lucas – October 1, 8, 15, 22, 29

Art Walk may be the premier weekly cultural event in San Jose del Cabo, but Viva La Plaza holds that distinction in Cabo San Lucas. Held each Friday evening from 6 to 10 p.m. in the Land’s End city’s principal plaza – Plaza Amelia Wilkes – this weekly showcase lures visitors with regional paintings and handicrafts, artfully arrayed around the recently renovated square’s charming central gazebo. Live music and traditional Mexican dance are also big draws, as are food stalls featuring tasty Mexican favorites.

Los Cabos Billfish Tournament – October 10th to 14th

Just as September is El Mes de la Patria, the “the country’s month,” in Mexico, October is the month of the fishing tournament in Cabo San Lucas. Bisbee’s two cash-rich tournaments–the Los Cabos Offshore and Black & Blue–get most of the publicity, but the Los Cabos Billfish Tournament also sends out a siren call to big-game fishermen eager for big-money prizes and jackpots. The biggest moment of last year’s tournament, literally, was when angler Hugo Pino aboard the Stella June bagged a whopping 593 lb. black marlin. That catch still wasn’t good enough to win the title on total points, an honor that went to team El Suertudo, who caught both qualifying blue and black marlin (over 300 lbs. minimum) to help the team take a home a check for a cool $344,700 dollars, their second consecutive win in the tournament. Total payouts in 2020 at the LCBT hit $742,500, and a cool million is not out of the question in 2021. Base entry is $5000 per team, or 25,000 all-in, across-the-board for all jackpots and prizes.

Bisbee’s Los Cabos Offshore Fishing Tournament – October 14th to 17th

Commonly known as “Little Bisbee’s,” to differentiate it from the “Big Bisbee’s” Black & Blue marlin fishing tournament that also takes place each October in Los Cabos, the Los Cabos Offshore dates back to 2002, and is considered a more laid-back, charity focused endeavor than the Black & Blue. Cash prizes are awarded to the teams with the three biggest qualifying fish in the game and billfish categories at the LCO, and large amounts of fish/meals are always donated to local families in need.

Base entry for teams is $1,500 U.S., with $22,500 necessary for “across the board” entry in all jackpots and challenges. In 2020, the Los Cabos Offshore topped the million-dollar mark for the second year in a row, with prize pools and jackpots totaling $1,457,000 for the 128 participating teams.

Top Chef Taco Series at Paradero – October 15th to 16th

The Taco Series of monthly events is a collaboration between Chef Eduardo Rios of Paradero Todos Santos and four visiting chefs from acclaimed restaurants in Mexico City, Tulum, Veracruz, and Culiacan. The chefs will draw on their own culinary backgrounds to create tacos that reflect the authentic flavors of Todos Santos.

During events, a total of six inventive tacos will be served, half of which will be the creation of the visiting chef. Chef Rios will create the remaining three tacos, plus dessert. The visiting chefs will put their own distinctive spin on the tacos using fresh, seasonal produce from Paradero’s own organic garden. As Todos Santos is renowned for its seafood, guests can expect creative takes on classic Baja fish tacos, ceviche tostadas, and other regional specialties.

Tacos are made from scratch and cooked in a traditional Oaxacan clay oven, while meat and fish are sizzled in a wood fired Josper oven and in a hibachi grill over binchotan charcoal. The October guest chef is Ezequiel Hernandez of Campobaja, a Mexico City based restaurant inspired by the fishing culture of Baja. Event prices start at $85 (beverages excluded).

Bisbee’s Black and Blue Fishing Tournament – October 19th to 23rd

Oft billed as “The World’s Richest Fishing Tournament,” thanks to its million dollar payouts, this marlin fishing tournament originally premiered in 1981, and remains to this day the highest profile annual event in Los Cabos. Base entry for this millionaire maker is $5,000 U.S. per team, and requires a $71,500 U.S. outlay across all categories, jackpots and challenges. Prizes are awarded for the top five catches of black and blue marlin, assuming they meet the minimum standards (300 lbs.).

A robust 127 teams comprising 883 fishermen and women competed in the Black and Blue in 2020, as the B&B smashed its own record with $4,649,350 in total prize money. That bested the former mark, set in 2006, of $4,165,960; which for well over a decade had been the largest payout in sport fishing history.

Art, Culture & Cabo: Previewing the 2021-2022 Art Walk Season in San Jose del Cabo

There’s not a lot of seasonal variation when it comes to weather in Los Cabos. The sun shines year-round and just about every day is a great day to go to the beach. But the gorgeous beaches are far from the only attractions, and when it comes to some of the other best things to do in cape cities Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo, timing and seasonal variation do come into play.

If you’ve long dreamed of going whale watching in Los Cabos, for example, there is a very specific time of year (mid-December through mid-March) when your chance of seeing, and even getting quite close, to these leviathans is at its peak. There’s also a peak surfing season, a peak diving season, a peak fishing season (ever wonder why all the big marlin fishing tournaments are held August through October?), and so on. Heck, there’s even a peak season for culture in Los Cabos, although luckily for art lovers, it spans nearly half of every year.

Yes, we’re talking about Art Walk Season in San Jose del Cabo, the region’s most enduring and anticipated cultural celebration, held every Thursday night, 5 pm to 9pm, during high tourist season, November through June, in the heart of the city’s historic Gallery District. A sidelong glance at the calendar cues us that this beloved event is close to returning, and in fact will return for a new season in a little more than a month.

But truthfully, one doesn’t need to circle any dates on the calendar to remember the return of Art Walk, as its return is always linked with that of another great Mexican event, Dia de Muertos, or Day of the Dead.

Mexico observes many holidays, but none quite so visually distinctive and emotionally resonant as El Dia de Muertos (Day of the Dead). This holiday to honor deceased family and friends dates back to the time of the Aztecs–who dedicated a festival to Mictecacihuatl, queen of the underworld, each August–but now takes place contemporaneously with the Catholic observance of Allhallowtide.

Traditionally, it is thought that the souls of children return on November 1st, and the souls of adults on November 2nd. Families will often build ofrendas (altars) in their homes, welcoming back the spirits of the departed with some of their favorite food and drinks, as well as special holiday themed items like cempasuchil flowers (Aztec marigolds), calaveras de azucar (candy skulls), and a sweet bread called pan de muerto.

Because the return of Art Walk is also contemporaneous with Day of the Dead, and because the striking visual component of the holiday dovetails with the aesthetic sensibilities of the artists and gallery owners in San Jose del Cabo’s Gallery District, these two events have always been linked in the minds of Cabeños (Los Cabos residents). In fact, many of the city’s gallery owners traditionally exhibit their own public ofrendas as artworks in conjunction with the holiday and the return of Art Walk.

Ironically, given the timing, downtown San Jose del Cabo is never livelier nor more beautiful than during Art Walk. Perhaps this is because Art Walk is, at heart, a celebration of San Jose del Cabo itself. The city comes alive in a new way on Thursdays during Art Walk season, with wandering musicians and mariachi bands among those walking the cobblestone streets of the historic Gallery District, while the entire downtown area is decorated in a festive whirl of lights.

The Gallery District, home to dozens of art galleries and studios, is the center of Art Walk, and remains the primary focus, as gallery owners and artists stay open late to interact with visitors. But the entire downtown area of the city is aglow. Plaza Mijares becomes an outdoor gallery for street artists and crafts people, with their wares laid out for all to see. The magnificent old Catholic church, Parroquia San Jose, is open for those who want to visit a more traditional altar than the Day of the Dead ofrendas at local galleries. City Hall, with its colorful courtyard murals depicting great moments in local and national history, also beckons those on an informal walking tour of the heart of the city.

One must stop for first-time visitors to Art Walk is at Los Tres Gallos, a long-time favorite in Cabo San Lucas that just recently opened a second location in the heart of the Gallery District. The San Jose restaurant is built around three entwined huanacaxtle trees, a design element so astounding and delightful that it fits perfectly with the artistic sensibilities of Thursday night Art Walks.

Nearby Baja Brewing Company, meanwhile, has grown so much over the past decade that its beers are now available in nearly a dozen U.S. states. But the original Gallery District location remains the best place to try the sudsy treasures from Baja California Sur’s first brewery…and still its best.

These are only two of the most popular stops, of course. There are many more, just as there are a wide array of galleries, arts and crafts boutiques and jewelry stores; from those showcasing traditional Mata Ortiz pottery and Huichol animal figures to paintings and sculptures from some of the best contemporary artists.

There is a lot of great art here, as well as arts and crafts, and custom jewelry. But mostly, there’s just a lot of life; which is why it’s always exciting to see this cultural celebration return, even though the return happens contemporaneously with a signature celebration of all those loved ones who have passed, Day of the Dead.
