Summer Golf Spotlight: Top Courses in Cabo San Lucas

We’ve said it before. We’ll say it again. Los Cabos is one of the most remarkable golf destinations on Earth.

As of 2021, the local portfolio numbers 18 beautiful courses – from Cabo San Lucas, San Jose del Cabo and their connective Tourist Corridor to the East Cape and beyond – almost all of them world-class, and all built within the last 35 years. Most boast powerhouse pedigrees, with designs from legendary names like Jack Nicklaus, Tiger Woods and Greg Norman. All showcase a spectacular blend of ocean, desert and mountain vistas.

Summer is traditionally golf season, and although such seasonal distinctions make little difference in always sunny Los Cabos, now is the time when many golfers turn their thoughts to destination golf trips.

So with that in mind, we’ll be previewing all of the local courses this summer, including the latest updates on specials and discounts.

Our first installment covered San Jose del Cabo. For our second, we’ll be looking at the stunning collection of courses in sister city Cabo San Lucas.

Golf in Cabo San Lucas

Five of the 18 golf courses in Los Cabos can be found in Cabo San Lucas, all of which are found on the Pacific Coast near the northern outskirts of the city…and nearly all of which are breathtakingly beautiful.

During the 1990s, when the golf boom in Los Cabos began, all the great courses were built along the 20-mile tourist corridor which connects Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo. Since Davis Love III’s Diamante Dunes course premiered in 2009, Cabo San Lucas has been ground zero for the region’s best new courses.

Note: These five courses are all part of resort and residential developments, with restricted tee time access for guests, owners and renters. To find out more about vacation rentals and how to play these courses, email us at info@loscabosvillas.com.

The Dunes Course at Diamante

In Los Cabos, only Nicklaus landmark Ocean Course at Cabo del Sol (now the Cove Club) has achieved the same sort of acclaim as Davis Love III’s Dunes Course at Diamante; and even that falls short when it comes to the opinion of the sport’s premier tastemakers. Voted top new international course in 2010, Golf Magazine declared the Dunes Course the 52nd best course in the world in 2013, the highest ranking ever achieved by a Los Cabos golf course at that point. It rose even higher on the same list in 2016, ascending to 36th. This lavish praise has elevated the 7,300-yard Dunes Course to “must-play” status for destination golfers, and the links style coastal layout does not disappoint.

El Cardonal at Diamante

“The site is incredible,” Tiger Woods said of his first ever completed golf course design, noting: “I set up the golf strategy to make golfers think and make choices. Regardless of your handicap, there are going to be different ways to play every hole. Angles of approach are going to be very important and will dictate the type of shots you should consider. I love this kind of golf.” So too have the many destination golfers to play El Cardonal since the course opened at Diamante in 2014. Envisioned by its creator as the kind of “Old California” layout he grew up playing as a kid, El Cardonal is long (7,363 yards) but fair, with plenty of gorgeous views.

The Oasis Short Course at Diamante

Tiger Woods returned to Los Cabos in 2016 to sculpt this modest but picturesque par-3 layout at Diamante. Only 12 holes in length, Oasis is a bit like an amuse bouche – a bite-sized hors d’ouevre – for Diamante visitors, who can hone their games before tackling the more difficult Dunes or El Cardonal courses. Although short in terms of length (1,124 yards), the course weaves through lush landscaping that includes an 8-acre lake and over 400 palm trees.

Quivira Golf Club

Jack Nicklaus triumphed again with this magnificent coastal layout at Quivira, a resort and residential development from Pueblo Bonito brand founder Ernesto Coppel Kelly. The 7,139-yard tour de force was voted the world’s best new international course in 2015 by Golf Magazine, and has since earned additional acclaim, including being named one of the W0rld’s 100 Best by Golf Digest. All 18 holes offer ocean views, and seven holes hug the coast, including the remarkable par-4 fifth, which is perched on the edge of sheer cliffside and offers opportunities to try to drive the green (or send your ball straight to Davey Jones’ locker). The 19th hole here also happens to be the best steakhouse in town.

Rancho San Lucas

The most recent addition to the Los Cabos golf landscape, the 7,210-yard Greg Norman designed Rancho San Lucas golf course premiered in February 2020 as the centerpiece of an 834-acre resort and residential development spearheaded by the Solmar Group, the only Los Cabos based resort brand, with seven local hotels and resorts. Norman’s second local layout is challenging but playable for golfers of all skill levels, with wide fairways and memorable touches like British Isles style bunkering. The most memorable feature, however, is the par-3 17th hole, which showcases an island green reminiscent of TPC Sawgrass, but with better views; including a surrounding lake as well as Pacific Ocean backdrops. As at nearby Quivira, ocean views are visible from all 18 holes.

Swing Time – When and Where to Find the Best Golf Tournaments in Los Cabos

Los Cabos is famous for its big-game fishing tournaments, many of which feature enormous payouts and cash-rich jackpots. Golf can’t really compete, at least in terms of lucrative prize money, but Los Cabos does feature an impressive collection of tournaments that show off the region’s many seaside golfing glories.

And to be fair, the prize money at some of these events is enticing. Most of it, however, is earmarked for the professionals. The big lure for amateurs and flat-out duffers is the opportunity to play and compete on some of the most spectacular courses in the world. Golf Digest’s most recent ranking of the World’s 100 Greatest Courses, for example, included four from Los Cabos, including two – Querencia and Cabo del Sol’s Ocean Course – that play host to annual tournaments.

Here are the top local golf tournaments to keep in mind when making plans for your next trip to Los Cabos.

Adidas Golf Invitational at Cabo del Sol

Now on its third name, the 2018 version of this tournament is scheduled for November 6 – 11 at Cabo del Sol’s picturesque Ocean and Desert Courses in the Los Cabos tourist corridor. Originally called the TaylorMade Invitational, the tournament was renamed in 2016 in honor of the late Jim Flick, a PGA Professional and golf instructor for more than 50 years. Flick taught golf in 23 countries and worked with pros like Tom Lehman and Jack Nicklaus, with whom he founded the Nicklaus-Flick Golf Schools. The now Adidas sponsored tournament retains the pro-am format, with professionals competing for $100,000 over 72-holes of stroke play, and foursomes (featuring one professional and three amateurs) battling in handicap-adjusted best ball contests. Participants are hosted by the luxurious Grand Fiesta Americana, and the tournament helps to raise money for American military veterans.

Los Cabos Pro-Am Golf Tournament

Cabo del Sol’s acclaimed Jack Nicklaus designed Ocean and Tom Weiskopf sculpted Desert Courses also play host to the 11th annual Los Cabos Pro-Am, yet another of the region’s signature golf competitions. Stay and play packages for the tournament include five days and four nights of accommodation at the Sheraton Grand Hacienda del Mar Golf & Spa Resort, as well as three rounds at the participating courses, plus an invitation to the opening and closing cocktail parties, and daily breakfast at one of Hacienda del Mar’s excellent onsite restaurants. Overall team prizes are another lure for amateurs. The 2019 event will take place January 14 – 18.

Cabo Collegiate at Querencia

This is the one local event with restrictions, as entry is reserved for collegian golfers. The Cabo Collegiate was established in 201o as a three-day invitational tournament, and each year since it has welcomed a dozen or more NCAA Division I teams to compete at Tom Fazio’s masterful and muy exclusivo Querencia Golf Club. Next year’s competition at the beautiful and challenging private layout – currently ranked #97 of the World’s 100 Greatest Courses by Golf Digest – is slated for March 3 – 5, 2019. Oklahoma State University is the two-time defending champion.

Paws n’ Claws Golf Tournament

The biggest annual fundraiser for the Los Cabos Humane Society traditionally features a golf competition at one of Los Cabos’ many world-class courses, before concluding with a fundraising dinner at a premier local restaurant The gorgeous Jack Nicklaus’ designed Palmilla Golf Club has played host for the last two competitions, with 18-holes chosen from among its three 9-hole layouts (Ocean, Mountain and Arroyo courses). Also notable during the last two years: Acre Restaurant, one of the leaders of the local farm-to-table movement, has fired up the BBQ fixings to accompany the usual fundraising silent auction. No dates, course or dinner destination have been announced as yet for the 2019 event, but the Paws n’ Claws Tournament typically takes place in March or April.

Stars and Stripes Golf and Fishing Tournament

Stars and Stripes is more than just a golf and fishing tournament….it’s a complete lifestyle experience. Participants stay at the luxurious Hilton Los Cabos; play golf at some of the world’s best golf courses; go big-game sportfishing for dorado, wahoo, tuna, sailfish, swordfish, and black, blue and striped marlin; and enjoy beach days and spectacular live entertainment nightly (Sammy Hagar headlined in 2015). Youth focused charities are the big winners, though. In its 20+ years of existence, the tournament has raised over 26 million dollars for kids. Dates are yet to be determined for 2019, but keep some time free in late June, early July.

A Taste of Cabo: Dates Set for Sabor a Cabo International Food & Wine Festival

Los Cabos’ robust schedule of annual events offers something to suit every taste, from sporting competitions showcasing fishing, golf and off-road racing to cultural fiestas celebrating art, film and music. For food and wine lovers, however, the most highly anticipated yearly event is Sabor a Cabo, a staple festival of the holiday season whose name translates to “Taste” or “Flavor” of Cabo.

Dates have recently been announced for the 2017 extravaganza, which will feature over 50 participating restaurants and 25 regional wineries, and is expected to draw over 3,000 guests from around the world.

The rural food and wine tasting will take place Sunday, Dec. 3 at Huerta Los Tamarindos, an organic farm and restaurant just outside San Jose del Cabo. The main event, meanwhile, is scheduled for Saturday, Dec. 9, and will be held at the Quivira Clubhouse at Quivira Los Cabos, an upscale resort and residential development on the Pacific Coast of Cabo San Lucas that is best known for its superb Jack Nicklaus designed golf course.

Although dozens of Los Cabos restaurants participate, Sabor a Cabo is an international festival in scope, with world-class cooking talent expected to attend. The three culinary headliners for the main event this year, for example, are celebrated chefs Dieter Koschina, Enrique Olvera and Richard Sandoval.

Koschina is originally from Austria, but became a household name in Portugal, where his Vila Joya (House of Joy) was awarded two coveted Michelin stars, and in 2012 became the country’s first restaurant to crack The World’s 50 Best Restaurants list. It’s currently ranked 98th best worldwide.

Olvera made his reputation with Pujol in Mexico City, currently ranked 20th in the world. That in itself would be an amazing achievement, but his New York based restaurant Cosme is 40th on the same list. Olvera made big news locally in 2015 when he opened a seafood-focused Pacific fusion restaurant, Manta, at The Cape: A Thompson Hotel in Los Cabos.

Sandoval, another Mexico City born chef (and television personality), has now opened over 40 restaurants around the world, from the U.S. and México to Serbia and Qatar. Among his many projects are two acclaimed restaurants in Los Cabos:  hip tourist corridor based eatery, Toro Latin Kitchen & Bar; and La Biblioteca de Tequila, a tequila and comfort food mecca at Breathless Cabo San Lucas Resort & Spa.

Incredible food and wine from world-class chefs may be the primary draw, but Sabor a Cabo also has a reputation for featuring world-class music. Past performers have included Grammy Award winning singer-songwriter Lila Downs, and Mexican rock group Mana – the best-selling Latin American band of all-time, with over 40 million albums sold.

No word yet on who will perform this year, but the organizers have dropped a hint that the musical headliner will be a famous international group most associated with the 1980s.

All ticket proceeds go to benefit local charities.

Ironman Hosts Superheroes in Los Cabos in 10 Days – 10-30-2016

Undaunted courage and uncommon discipline meet unbelievable views next week at the 4th annual ironman-photoIronman Los Cabos triathlon.

Don’t worry. The ultimate tough guy and gal test doesn’t require much: just a teensy-weensy 2.4 mile swim, followed by a brief 112-mile bike ride, and your average everyday 26.2 mile marathon.

Lest one get bored, the grueling day-long adventure also features glimpses of some of the most spectacular coastal Los Cabos real estate in the world, from scenic detours through cape cities Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo to extended forays along the 20-mile luxury hotel studded seaside corridor which connects them.

Those who can survive until the estimated 5 p.m. sunset will be treated to a gorgeous explosion of color over Land’s End and the Sea of Cortez, with finishers entitled to a celebratory finish line fiesta in front of historic City Hall in San Jose (and a lifetime of bragging rights). Those who can’t are advised to repair to the nearest beachfront cantina for ice-cold Coronas and a few hours in a palm-shaded hammock. A massage may not be a bad idea either.  (Luckily, Los Cabos is home to four of the top ten spas in Latin America.) http://www.travelandleisure.com/slideshows/top-10-mexico-spas

Ironman triathlons, as aficionados know, were born in the 1970s, and now take place on six continents around the globe. Los Cabos was the second site in Mexico to host the rugged competition (after Cozumel), with the inaugural race taking place in 2013.

This year the organizers have scheduled a special Halloween edition (as if the prospect of covering 140.6 miles in a single day south of the Tropic of Cancer wasn’t scary enough), plus a separate 70.3 (or half-triathlon) for “slackers.” The event takes place October 30, and promises big-time prize money (typically over $75,000 U.S.), as well as 40 coveted qualifying spots for the annual Ironman World Championship in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii.
