The holiday season in Los Cabos is a snowbird’s delight, offering not only sunny, beach-friendly weather and holiday themed atmosphere and events, but also a wide variety of one-of-kind seasonal adventures. From whale watching to art walks, surfing to swimming with whale sharks, Los Cabos is a winter wonderland…albeit one where the daytime temperatures are a balmy 75 to 80 degrees Fahrenheit, and the ocean waters are warm enough for snorkeling and diving.
With that in mind, here are a few of our favorite recommendations for things to see and do this December in Los Cabos.
San José del Cabo Art Walk – Dec. 3, 10, 17, 24, 31
The historic Distrito del Arte in San Jose del Cabo takes center stage each Thursday evening during high tourist season–November through June–when residents and visitors alike are invited to stroll its cobblestone streets and peruse the many eclectic fine arts galleries. Art Walk hours are 5 to 9 p.m., when the neighborhood comes alive with wine, cheese and guided tours, as well as colorful street artists and strolling mariachis. This being 2020, social distancing and other safety protocols are in effect.
Whale Watching Season
Each winter some 5,000 to 10,000 blue, gray, humpback and other whales migrate from their arctic feeding grounds to breed in the shallow water coves and inlets of beautiful Baja California Sur. In this regard these leviathans of the deep are very much like the snowbirds who flock to cape cities Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo to escape frigid winter temperatures in the U.S. and Canada. The only real difference–aside from the obvious anatomical ones–is one of scale. The longest mammalian migration ever recorded was in 2014-2015, when a gray whale dubbed Varvara traveled over 14,000 miles round-trip from Russia to Cabo San Lucas. The whale watching season in Los Cabos kicks off officially on Dec. 15, with tours offered by virtually all local activities companies through mid-April.
Windsurfing and Kitesurfing Season
Each winter, from mid-November through mid-March, strong El Norte winds blow hundreds of miles down the Sea of Cortez, creating ideal wind and kite surfing conditions in many coastal areas of Los Cabos. During this yearly breezy season, small East Cape communities like Los Barriles become meccas for world-class kitesurfers, kiteboarders and windsurfers, who flock to regional beaches for a chance to grab big air over offshore waves. Stand-up paddle boarding (SUP), mountain biking, and ATVing are also popular activities during the wintertime months on Los Cabos’ picturesque and lightly developed East Cape.
Swim with Whale Sharks Season
The whale shark is the largest fish in the world, reaching up to 40 feet in length, and weighing as much as 47,000 pounds. There is no risk in swimming with these gentle giants, however, since they subsist solely on plankton. Baja California Sur’s capital city of La Paz is the premier place to indulge in this interactive and unforgettable wildlife adventure, with the majority of swim tours occurring near the tip of the El Mogote peninsula (typically from August through May). Complimentary round-trip transportation from Los Cabos is provided by several respected activities providers.
Pacific Side Surf Season
Surfers will find great waves in Baja California Sur on a year-round basis, although the scene shifts according to the season. During the winter months, for example, the best top breaks are found on the Pacific Coast, most notably off beaches like Cerritos, San Pedrito and La Pastora. Playa Los Cerritos is the best of the Pacific side beaches for beginners, and several local surf shops offer board rentals and lessons there; notably Costa Azul Surf Shop, which also maintains a shop on Playa Costa Azul in San Jose del Cabo (headquarters for the summer scene). Cerritos is less than an hour by car from Cabo San Lucas, and only 10 minutes or so from the popular day trip destination of Todos Santos.
