The Summer Sports Season Heats Up: July Events in Los Cabos

The 2018 fishing season in Los Cabos started with June’s Cabo Summer Slam, AKA the Pelagic Triple Crown of Fishing,
but really heats up in July with three of the region’s signature events.

The Capes’ biggest tennis competition, the ATP sponsored Abierto Los Cabos (or Los Cabos Open), also returns, welcoming in the world’s number four ranked men’s player, Juan Martin del Potro, alongside previous winners.

22nd Annual Stars and Stripes Golf and Fishing Tournament (June 28 to July 1)

Golf and fishing provide the competitive tournament aspect of the 22nd annual Stars and Stripes, but there are also beach days, spa visits, nightly dinners, and music from some of the world’s most recognizable performers. The 22nd edition of what amounts to the complete Cabo lifestyle experience – which also raises money for children’s charities – is scheduled to return June 28.

Of all its attractions, fishing has proved to be most enduringly popular part of Stars & Stripes. No surprise, really, given that the tourism industries for cape cities Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo were built on big-game sportfishing. The tournament launches from beautiful Chileno Bay, with participating anglers vying to bag the biggest tuna, dorado, wahoo, sailfish, and blue, black and striped marlin. This year start times have been pushed back to allow a more vacation-like approach.

Golf, too, is a major draw. Participants this year have the choice of nine or 18-hole tournament outings at Puerto Los Cabos, which currently boasts 27 spectacular holes from champion golfers Jack “The Golden Bear” Nicklaus and Greg “The Great White Shark” Norman. Nine of the holes at Puerto Los Cabos are brand new, so tournament entrants will be among the first to play them.

Nightly musical entertainment is also a distinguishing feature of Stars & Stripes. This year the headliner is Don Felder, former lead guitarist for the Eagles, and a co-writer of the iconic song Hotel California. Plenty of other acts are also on tap, including The Downtown Band, and the festivities will once again be hosted by Shawn Parr, AKA “The Ambassador of Country Music” and “The Voice of the Golden Globes.”

14th Annual East Cape Dorado Shootout (July 21)

Since 2005, the beautiful East Cape community of Los Barriles has been hosting a one-day dorado fishing shootout. Dorado, for the uninitiated, is the Spanish word for what fishermen in the Western U.S. call mahi-mahi, and people in the Eastern U.S. typically refer to as dolphin or dolphinfish.

By any name, it’s a delicious food fish; and by any standards, the East Cape Shootout is one of the most popular annual fishing tournaments in Los Cabos, with an average turnout of about 130 teams per year.

Team entry for this year’s tournament, to be held July 21, is $500. That’s the ante for a shot at a new Volkswagen Amarok pickup truck and other prizes. Optional side jackpots can also be lucrative. Last year, jackpot purses alone totaled over $126,000.

3rd Annual ATP Los Cabos Open of Tennis  (July 30 to August 4)

Los Cabos is justifiably famed for its booming golf scene, but the cape cities have also proved fertile for golf’s traditional country club partner, tennis.

The most high-profile example of this is the Los Cabos Open, an ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) sponsored tournament hosted each summer near Cabo San Lucas. Two of the world’s top 10 ranked men, American Jack Sock and Argentine Juan Martin del Potro, have already committed for the 2018 event.

The Los Cabos Open (or Abierto Los Cabos as it is known is Spanish) is one of two ATP events held annually in Mexico, the other being the Mexican Open in Acapulco. The first Los Cabos Open tournament in 2016 featured 13 of the world’s 50 best players, and was won by hard serving Croatian Ivo Karlovic, who defeated Spanish star Feliciano Lopez in the final. The match had historic dimensions, as it featured the oldest finalists in an ATP event since 1977. Last year, American Sam Querrey accomplished the first Mexican Double, winning both the country’s professional tournaments in the same year. Juan Martin del Potro won in Acapulco a few weeks ago, so another Mexican Double is potentially in play this year.

In addition to Sock and del Potro, world number 20 Fabio Fognini, and 38th ranked Lopez have also confirmed. The defending Queen’s Club champion and a former French Open doubles champion, Lopez has appeared at all of the Los Cabos Opens to date, and has helped to promote the tournament to a broader audience with numerous media appearances on its behalf. Others who have committed for this year’s 3rd annual event include current no. 54 Ryan Harrison and a singles finalist from last year, Thanasi Kokkinakis. Last year’s champion, Sam Querrey, will also return.

The tournament takes place at the Delmar International School, a bilingual and bicultural education facility serving children K-12. Special facilities were built there for the first tournament in 2016, highlighted by a 3,500 seat stadium, grandstand and auxiliary courts, plus a hospitality center featuring fine food and drink, sponsor tents, and of course gorgeous views of Land’s End.

19th Annual Bisbee’s East Cape Offshore  (July 31 to August 4)

As summer temperatures heat up, the fishing tournament scene migrates to the Los Cabos municipality’s gorgeous East Cape. No less than two separate single-day tournaments (including the East Cape Dorado Shootout) give away new fully-loaded automobiles to winners, but the region’s summer headliner remains the Bisbee’s East Cape Offshore.

The ECO is the first of three Bisbee’s sponsored fishing tournaments that take place in Los Cabos each year. Cash prizes will be awarded to the top three qualifiers in marlin, tuna and dorado categories during the 2018 edition – scheduled for July 31 to August 4 – with the awards celebration taking place afterwards at the Hotel Buena Vista. Base entry for the event is $1500 per team, with additional fees for daily jackpots. Prize money is based on entry fees received, with 60% going to the billfish winners, and 20% each to top tuna and dorado anglers.

Last year, 64 teams vied for over $590,000 in prize money at the East Cape Offshore. A record 11 of the 64 teams shared in those payouts, following an exciting tournament that saw 136 billfish – including 71 blue marlin and 55 striped marlin – caught in only three days.

A Legend Passes but His Legacy Lives On – East Cape Offshore Kicks Off Bisbee’s 2018 Tournament Schedule

It all started back in 1981, when the owner of a fuel dock and tack business on Balboa Island, Newport Harbor, organized the first Black & Blue marlin tournament in Cabo San Lucas.

His name was Bob Bisbee, and at that first tournament six teams competed for the princely sum of about 10,000 dollars.

Fast forward 25 years into the future, to 2006, and the cash payout had grown to a staggering $4,165,960, then and now the largest in sportfishing history. Over the course of two and a half decades, this once small event had grown to become the most famous in the sport, gathering nicknames along the way like “The World’s Richest Fishing Tournament” and “The Super Bowl of Sportfishing.”

Flash forward 12 more years to 2018 and Bisbee’s Black & Blue remains the marquee fishing event in Cabo San Lucas (and beyond), but it’s no longer the only major tournament on the calendar. It’s not even the only major tournament on the calendar for Bisbee’s.

Over the course of its history in the Los Cabos municipality – which not only includes cape cities Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo, but also the less developed East Cape area – Bisbee’s has steadily built its brand, increasing its prestige through bigger payouts and an extended range of tournament offerings. An East Cape Offshore was added in 2000, a Los Cabos Offshore in 2002.

That trio has comprised Bisbee’s Los Cabos fishing triumvirate ever since.

Each has its own place on the calendar, and each has its own unique personality. The Black & Blue remains very much “The Big Daddy,” while the Los Cabos Offshore has become a more fun-filled, charity-focused alternative.

The East Cape Offshore, meanwhile, is known as the most laid-back of the three events, and as a tone setter, since it’s the first event to take place each year. It kicks off, in effect, the yearly calendar.

In 2018, the ECO is scheduled for Jul. 31 to Aug. 4; the LCO follows, Oct. 18 to 21; with  the B&B headlining Oct. 23 to 27.

July 31st is thus the day Bisbee’s returns to Los Cabos, the day all eyes turn to the municipality’s gorgeous East Cape, a 70-mile coastal arc that stretches from the outskirts of San Jose del Cabo to Los Barriles and the Bay of Palms beyond.

The East Cape has long been known for its dirt roads, secluded beaches and off-the-grid communities, but the recent Los Cabos building boom has reached as far as the East Cape’s La Ribera, site of the soon-to-be-open Four Seasons Costa Palmas Resort.

A few miles northwest of La Ribera are Los Barriles and its neighbor Buenavista, the traditional fishing capitals of the East Cape. The two small but picturesque tourist towns host the majority of the region’s tournaments. Hotel Buena Vista Beach Resort in Buenavista, for example, is the long-time headquarters for Bisbee’s East Cape Offshore, and the site of the post-tournament awards ceremony. This heritage is celebrated by the leaping marlin sculpture which greets guests at the resort’s entrance.

Last year, 64 teams vied for over $590,000 in prize money at the East Cape Offshore. A record 11 of the 64 teams shared in those payouts, following an exciting tournament that saw 136 billfish – including 71 blue marlin and 55 striped marlin – caught in only three days. By contrast, only three dorado and 16 tuna were boated during the same time period.

Capt. Andrew Hughes and his Mi Corazon team finished first overall, receiving over $258,000 for their efforts….not a bad return for a few days spent fishing in paradise. Their winning catch was an impressive 437 lb. black marlin, one of only three black marlin caught during the tournament.

Base entry for this year’s ECO remains $1,500 per team, with $17,000 across the board for entry in all daily jackpots. The base entries are pooled and disbursed at the conclusion of the event, with the majority going to billfish winners, and the remainder earmarked for trophy gamefish like tuna and dorado.

Sadly, Bob Bisbee will not be there to watch it. The man who started it all, the godfather of tournament fishing in Los Cabos, passed away peacefully in his Dallas area home last Thursday, June 14th, at the age of 85.

He will be missed. But his legacy continues, his name forever synonymous with trophy-sized catches and boisterous good times.

Swinging into Summer – June Parties & Events in Los Cabos

June is an exciting time in Los Cabos, thanks to a slate of seasonal events that range from art and music

focused fiestas to outdoor adventures and prestigious sporting competitions.

The first month of summer, for example, sees the start of peak surf season on the Sea of Cortez side beaches of Los Cabos; most notably at Costa Azul, where Zippers surf break is ground zero for the area’s only World Surf League sponsored professional event: The Los Cabos Open of Surf.

June also ushers in the season for Los Cabos municipality’s yearly roster of cash-rich fishing tournaments, with two high-profile competitions.

We take a look at these events and more in our regular monthly preview of the region’s upcoming attractions….

San José del Cabo Art Walk  (June 7, 14, 21, 28)

The historic Distrito del Arte in San Jose del Cabo takes center stage each Thursday evening during high tourist season – November through June – when residents and visitors alike are invited to stroll its cobblestone streets and peruse the many eclectic fine arts galleries. Art Walk hours are 5 to 9 p.m, when the neighborhood comes alive with wine, cheese and guided tours, as well as colorful street artists and strolling mariachis.

This season’s Art Walk has been the biggest and best yet; and there is still time to enjoy the event before it goes on hiatus:  four more Thursday evening celebrations are scheduled before the end of June.

For those unable to experience this festival of sights, sounds and flavors before then, don’t worry. Art Walk returns at the beginning of November each year, with all new art and, traditionally, personalized altars as part of Day of the Dead remembrances throughout Mexico.

5th Annual Cabo Summer Slam/Pelagic Triple Crown of Fishing Tournament  (June 7 to 9)

Pelagic, a Newport Beach based company, is one of the world’s leaders when it comes to lifestyle apparel and high-performance gear associated with watersports like fishing, boating, diving and surfing. So it’ll come as no surprise that the 5th annual Cabo Summer Slam, slated for June 7 – 9, offers some high stakes prizes and jackpots. Over $200,000 is on the line in 2018, meaning it’s the biggest Cabo San Lucas based tournament until Bisbee’s big money competitions in October.

This is a bet big, win big scenario. General entry is $2,500 for tournament teams, or $12,500 to cover base entry plus all daily jackpots. Participating fishermen will be targeting the usual suspects: marlin (blue, black and striped), sailfish, tuna, dorado and wahoo; but prizes are spread across four divisions.

Prizes will be given to teams that catch and release the most aggregate billfish points, and to those weighing the heaviest two-fish total of each gamefish species – tuna, wahoo and dorado – during the two-day tournament. As with most local tournaments, however, the biggest money is paid out in jackpots.

Los Cabos Open of Surf  (June 11 to 17)

There are two World Surf League sponsored surfing events held annually on the Baja California peninsula: one is a Big Wave Tour event off Todos Santos Island near Ensenada; the other is the Los Cabos Open of Surf, hosted each June at Zippers point break off Playa Costa Azul in San José del Cabo.

When it premiered in 2013, the Los Cabos Open of Surf was a 6-star men’s event under the ASP (the forerunner to the WSL). Women joined the fun in 2014, and since 2015, the LCOS has been a QS 6000 event solely for women and junior men and women.

The 2018 competition is scheduled for June 11 – 17, and like events in previous years, will be a celebration of all aspects of surf culture, from beach parties and culinary fetes to nightly entertainment featuring DJs and live musical performers.

Fiesta de la Música in San José del Cabo  (June 23)

In 1982, the first Fete de la Musique was held in Paris, where it was scheduled to coincide with the summer solstice, the longest day of the year. Flash forward 36 years, and the Fete de la Musique is no longer solely a French celebration, but a worldwide phenomenon that takes place annually in over 450 cities in 12o countries around the globe. For the past 10 years, that list of cities has included San Jose del Cabo, where the celebration is known by its Spanish name, La Fiesta de la Musica.

This summer symphony is free and open to all musicians who’d like to participate, from amateurs to professionals, across all musical genres. The only prerequisite for participants and spectators – for whom admission is also free – is a love for music, a passion that’s so pervasive internationally that music is often referred to as the universal language. The art form’s universality, in fact, provides the context for the event’s local motto: “la fiesta de todos y para todos” (“the party from all and for all).

Over the past decade, the Fiesta de la Musica has become so important and so beloved by the local community that it’s now considered the premier music festival in Los Cabos. Certainly, it’s the most robustly attended, drawing over 25,000 people annually. The 2018 edition is slated for Saturday, June 23 – 6 p.m. to 2 a.m. – with some 100 or more bands and musical acts expected to perform throughout the city’s historic downtown area.

22nd Annual Stars and Stripes Golf and Fishing Tournament  (June 28 to July 1)

The 22nd edition of what amounts to the complete Cabo lifestyle experience – fishing, golf, music, food and drinks, beach days, and more – is scheduled to return June 28.

The fishing tournament has proved to be most enduringly popular part of Stars & Stripes. It launches from beautiful Chileno Bay, with participating anglers vying to bag the biggest tuna, dorado, wahoo, sailfish, and blue, black and striped marlin. For 2018, start times have been pushed back to allow a more vacation-like approach.

But golf, too, is a major draw.

In past years, rock stars like Sammy Hagar, The Doobie Brothers, Three Dog Night, and Kenny Loggins have played their biggest hits. This year the headliner is Don Felder, former lead guitarist for the Eagles, and a co-writer of the iconic song Hotel California. Plenty of other acts are also on tap, including The Downtown Band, and the festivities will once again be hosted by Shawn Parr, AKA “The Ambassador of Country Music”.

The Biggest Fishing Tournaments in Los Cabos in 2018

Since the first resorts appeared in the late 1950s and early 1960s, anglers have been lured to the southernmost rim of the Baja California peninsula by the promise of abundant and enormous billfish. And in an inevitable sequence, where the fishermen have gone the tournaments have soon followed.

The Sea of Cortez Fishing Tournament Internacional was the first, but lasted only two years: 1968 and 1969. Perhaps its short-lived existence had something to do with the lack of a marina and an international airport (dredging on the former started in Cabo San Lucas in 1973; the latter was completed in San Jose del Cabo in 1977), but in any case, more tournaments sprung up soon afterwards, and they’ve continued to appear regularly ever since.

Bisbee’s Black & Blue remains the benchmark, the longest continually operated annual tournament in the region, and the richest. But every year now – from early June to early November – competitive types can get all the big-game fishing action their hearts (or more likely, their wallets) can handle.

Here are the five biggest fishing tournaments scheduled in Los Cabos in 2018:

Cabo Summer Slam/Pelagic Triple Crown of Fishing Tournament

Much of the summer tournament action is centered around the Los Cabos municipality’s beautiful, less developed East Cape, but Cabo San Lucas is always a focal point when it comes to the biggest sponsors and most lucrative payouts. That’s certainly true of what qualifies as the first major tournament of the 2018 season, the Cabo Summer Slam, AKA the Pelagic Triple Crown of Fishing.

Pelagic, a Newport Beach based company, is one of the world’s leaders when it comes to lifestyle apparel and high-performance gear associated with watersports like fishing, boating, diving and surfing. So it’ll come as no surprise that the Cabo Summer Slam offers some high stakes prizes and jackpots. Over $200,000 is on the line for the 5th annual tournament in 2018 – slated for June 7 to 9 – meaning it’s the biggest Cabo San Lucas based tournament until Bisbee’s big money competitions in October.

Bisbee’s East Cape Offshore

As summer temperatures heat up, the fishing tournament scene migrates to the Los Cabos municipality’s gorgeous East Cape. No less than two separate single-day tournaments – the East Cape Dorado Shootout and Gold Cup Wahoo Jackpot – give away new fully-loaded automobiles to winners, but the region’s summer headliner remains the Bisbee’s East Cape Offshore.

Los Cabos Billfish Tournament

Just as September is El Mes de la Patria, the “the country’s month,” in México, October is the month of the fishing tournament in Cabo San Lucas. Bisbee’s two cash-rich tournaments – the Los Cabos Offshore and Black & Blue – get most of the publicity, but the Los Cabos Billfish Tournament also sends out a siren call to big-game fishermen eager for big-money prizes and jackpots. The three tournaments combined last year to pay out over $4,735,000 to the winners. The 20th annual LCBT – slated for October 14 to 18 – again features three entry levels:  a $5,000 base entry for each 6-person team; daily jackpots for the largest tuna, wahoo and dorado; and daily billfish release jackpots.

Bisbee’s Black & Blue

Oft billed as “The World’s Richest Fishing Tournament” and “The Super Bowl of Sportfishing” thanks to its million dollar payouts, the Black & Blue marlin fishing tournament originally premiered in 1981, and remains to this day the highest profile annual event in Los Cabos. The $4.165 million payout in 2006 was and still is the largest in sportfishing history. Base entry for this millionaire maker is $5,000 U.S. per team, and requires a $71,500 U.S. outlay across all categories, jackpots and challenges. Prizes are awarded for the top five catches of black and blue marlin, assuming they meet the minimum standards (300 lbs.). The 38th annual Bisbee’s Black & Blue will take place Oct. 23 to 27.

WON Los Cabos Tuna Jackpot

The Western Outdoor News has a long history with Los Cabos, dating back to the 1950s, when Baja columnist Ray Cannon’s rave fishing reviews helped put the area on the destination travel map. Cannon’s 1966 book The Sea of Cortez remains a classic time capsule look at the region and its signature activity, and the WON writers who’ve followed him on the Baja beat have continued to burnish Los Cabos’ reputation as a sportfishing mecca. The WON Tuna Jackpot honors that heritage with one of the larger fishing tournaments in Cabo San Lucas, a fixture of the autumn sporting calendar that follows hard on the heels of the Los Cabos Billfish and Bisbee’s Los Cabos Offshore and Black & Blue tournaments. The 19th edition in 2017 saw 147 teams competing across 11 events for over $677,000 in prize money. Even bigger things are yet to come, with the 2018 tournament scheduled for November 7 to 10.

Thursday Night Art Walks Celebrate the Beauty, History and Culture of San Jose del Cabo

On the surface level, the weekly Art Walks in San Jose del Cabo are a celebration of the town’s talented artists and its dozens of colorful art galleries.

But on a deeper level the Art Walks – held each Thursday from 5 to 9 p.m., November through June – are a celebration of San Jose del Cabo itself. The event is, in a very real sense, a small-scale canvas upon which an entire community and its rich culture and history are presented to the world.

Many people think Los Cabos was born with the beginning of the tourist age, and this is at least partly true. The name Los Cabos wasn’t created until 1981, when it was given to the peninsula’s newly designated and southernmost municipality. The town of San Jose del Cabo, however, is much, much older. In fact, it’s one of the oldest continually occupied communities in the Californias.

It was at San Jose del Cabo that the first Jesuit mission in Los Cabos was built in 1730. San Jose was chosen as a site in large part because of its abundant freshwater resources, which had also been luring treasure-laden galleons since colonial Spain inaugurated the lucrative Manila–Acapulco trade route in 1565.

San Jose del Cabo was a hotbed of resistance during the Mexican–American War, site of both a pitched battle and a prolonged siege against the invaders. The region’s wartime political leader was a native son of San Jose del Cabo named Mauricio Castro Cota, and a young officer named Jose Antonio Mijares passed into local legend after he died leading a charge against U.S. forces on Nov. 20, 1847. The spot on which he fell has been the site of a public monument ever since.

Certainly, the architectural monuments of the downtown area are among the most beautiful in all of Baja California Sur. A depiction of the death of the first local Jesuit missionary – Nicolas Tamaral, who was killed by indigenous inhabitants after an ill-fated ban on polygamy – is set above the main doors of the beautiful old Catholic church (Parroquia San Jose), one of many important historical sites located near the main square of Plaza Mijares. City Hall, with its distinctive clock tower, was completed in 1930, and today houses wonderful murals depicting the history of the area, and of the country at large.

The first hotel in Los Cabos, Fisher House, opened in 1951, about a block from the old church. The small property, owned by Carmen Fisher, predated the now legendary Hotel Palmilla by a full six years. These and other monuments are living reminders of San Jose’s long and storied history…but the downtown area has also recently received a thoroughly modern facelift, so that old and new co-exist side-by-side.

The weekly Art Walks welcome visitors into the heart of this special place for romantic perambulations, not only through the officially designated Distrito del Arte – with its charming cobblestone streets – but throughout the historic downtown area at large.

Artists and art lovers open their galleries to showcase their latest offerings, downtown monuments like City Hall and Parroquia San Jose are outlined by colorful lights, arts and crafts makers spread out their wares on tables or along the sidewalks, wandering musicians serenade passersby sipping wine, or those taking a breather at local bars and restaurants.

There are plenty of both, by the way. San Jose del Cabo is home to the original Baja Brewing Company and dozens of superb restaurants, from Mexican traditionalists like Jazmin’s and La Lupita to internationally representative eateries like La Dolce.

This season’s Art Walk has been the biggest and best yet; and there is still time to enjoy the event before it goes on hiatus:  eight more Thursday evening celebrations are scheduled before the end of June.

For those unable to experience this festival of sights, sounds and flavors before then, don’t worry. Art Walk returns at the beginning of November each year, with all new art and, traditionally, personalized altars as part of Day of the Dead remembrances throughout Mexico.

A Parade of Fiestas: May Events in Los Cabos

Before the summer parade of fishing tournaments and fruit festivals begins, spring flowers for a final month in Los Cabos, showcasing its signature blend of food, wine, art and fashionable late-night fiestas.

The annual White Party at the ME Cabo resort on Medano Beach is perhaps the most eagerly awaited May event in Los Cabos, one whose popularity dates back to the pre-Hurricane Odile days of the Nikki Beach Club. Each year around Memorial Day weekend, ME Cabo’s onsite nightclub – now Blue Marlin Ibiza, formerly Nikki Beach – hosts an elegant all-white soiree that features world-class DJs, VIP bottle service, exotically clad dancers, and a massive midnight fireworks show.

This may come as a surprise to some visitors, who expect Cinco de Mayo – the anniversary of the victory of Mexican forces over the French at the Battle of Puebla in 1862 – to be the ultimate springtime fiesta. Cinco de Mayo was actually popularized in the U.S. and is not celebrated to any significant extent in Los Cabos. Local bars may offer some Cinco de Mayo margarita specials, but that’s about it.

No need to worry, though. The month of May brings plenty of other notable holidays and events.

San José del Cabo Art Walk  (May 3, 10, 17, 24, 31)

The historic Distrito del Arte in San Jose del Cabo takes center stage each Thursday evening during high tourist season – November through June – when residents and visitors alike are invited to stroll its cobblestone streets and peruse the many eclectic fine arts galleries. Art Walk hours are 5 to 9 p.m, when the neighborhood comes alive with wine, cheese and guided tours, as well as colorful street artists and strolling mariachis. A chance to check out San Jose’s recent downtown makeover is another reason to make the Thursday night pilgrimage.

483rd La Paz Foundation Festival  (May 3 – 5)

Although the first European to set foot on the Baja California peninsula was mutineer Fortun Ximenez – who arrived with ill-tempered crew sometime in late 1533 – the residents of La Paz celebrate the day his superior, conquistador par excellence Hernan Cortes, came ashore a year and a half later. That date, May 3, 1535 has been enshrined as the official foundation of La Paz, even though Cortes himself called the place Santa Cruz. This anniversary is remembered with an annual festival in Baja California Sur’s capital city featuring activities and concerts, as well as a traditional reenactment of the first landing of the Spaniards.

El Día de la Madre  (May 10)

As in other countries, Mother’s Day in Mexico is an occasion to celebrate moms for all they do; showering them with candy, flowers and other gifts. Many area restaurants offer special menus for Mother’s Day, and local children often put on mom-themed shows at schools and cultural pavilions. The main difference between Mother’s Day in the U.S. and México is the date. In the U.S., mothers are honored on the second Sunday in May. In México, the date remains the same each year:  May 10th.

Gastrovino Food & Wine Festival  (May 19 – 20)

Attention gourmands and oenophiles: outside perhaps the annual Sabor a Cabo shindig in Los Cabos, Gastrovino is the best food and wine festival in Baja California Sur. Held each April or May in the state’s only pueblo magico, Todos Santos, Gastrovino is organized by the owners of a local wine and olive oil shop called La Bodega de Todos Santos and features a weekend chockablock with tantalizing tasting opportunities. The pairing dinner at legendary Hotel California is one of many recurring highlights, but the “Big Cheese,” so to speak, is the Sunday main event on the town square. There, dozens of wineries from Baja’s Valle de Guadalupe share their palate-pleasing wares, as do many of the region’s best restaurants. Live music is also a staple, as is a silent auction to benefit local programs for children.

White Party at ME Cabo/Blue Marlin Ibiza  (May 26)

For many years, the highlight of the social season was the fabulous White Party thrown each May by Nikki Beach Club at the ME Cabo Hotel on Médano Beach. Nikki Beach never reopened following Hurricane Odile in 2014, and ME Cabo itself was slow to recover, needing 18 months of repairs and renovations before it welcomed guests again in March 2016. Luckily for local party goers Blue Marlin Ibiza, the club that ultimately replaced Nikki Beach, has taken over the tradition and returned the White Party to its former glory. Internationally acclaimed DJ Roger Sanchez rocked the house in 2017, headlining a hedonistic celebration that included the event’s signature midnight fireworks display over Médano Beach. The 2018 White Party, scheduled for May 26th, is expected to be bigger and better than ever, with legendary English DJ Paul Oakenfold taking over the primary house rocking duties.

Pelagic Sponsors 5th Annual Cabo Summer Slam This June

Fishing in Los Cabos is a year-round proposition. There is no bad time to cast into the local waters, just variability in terms of what one might expect to catch.

But what might be called the Cabo fishing tournament season – the period when visiting anglers are not only seeking fish, but also cash money and valuable prizes – begin in early June and continues through early November. This five-month stretch sees a host of tournaments, large and small, and not coincidentally comes during the time of year when huge billfish like blue and black marlin are most abundant.

Numbers will be announced at the post-tournament awards ceremony, which along with the after-party will be held at Baja Cantina on the Cabo San Lucas Marina.

The Cabo Summer Slam is the first of five major tournaments in Los Cabos this summer. The others are the Stars & Stripes (Jun. 28 – Jul. 1), which pairs fishing with golf, music and beach days to benefit charities for children; the East Cape Dorado Shootout (Jul. 21) and East Cape Gold Cup Wahoo Jackpot (Aug. 25), which both give away new fully-loaded automobiles, among other prizes; and Bisbee’s East Cape Offshore (Jul. 31 – Aug. 4), the first of Bisbee’s annual trio of cash-rich tournaments in Los Cabos, which culminate with the Los Cabos Offshore and Black & Blue in October.

In addition to its seriously large payouts, the Cabo Summer Slam also offers an opportunity to test one’s mettle against some of the finest game fish in the world. Blue and black marlin are the gold standard of Los Cabos fishing, with the biggest specimens caught locally weighing out at around 1,000 pounds. Sailfish, by contrast, rarely weigh more than 200 lbs., but they too are a magnificent test, as at top speeds of 68 mph they are faster through the water than a cheetah on dry land.

Wahoo are also fierce fighters and delicious to boot, nearly as good to eat as dorado and tuna, the signature Los Cabos food fish. Dorado, better known as mahi-mahi (West Coast) or dolphinfish (East Coast) in the U.S., are a true local delicacy – one splashed across the menus of all the best local seafood restaurants – and yellowfin and much rarer bluefin tuna are prized not only by local fishermen but local sushi chefs as well.

Discounts are available for those who register for the Pelagic Triple Crown of Fishing – Cabo Summer Slam by May 1st. Racing, Tasting and Fundraising: April Events in Los Cabos

April in Los Cabos means the end of Spring Break and seasonal whale watching adventures, but the local event calendar doesn’t suffer in the slightest. On the contrary, the glorious springtime temperatures usher in a fresh set of outdoor cultural festivals and sporting competitions.

Off-road racing enthusiasts, particularly of the vintage rally sport variety, will love NORRA’s Mexican 1000, which offers challenging competitive conditions as well as a chance to revel in the nostalgia of what Baja racing looked like in the 1960s and 70s.

That race’s finish line fiesta takes place in San Jose del Cabo, and indeed what Los Cabos does best in April are celebrations centered around food and drink. The farming community of Miraflores, for example, is hosting an organic food festival; luxury beachfront resort Casa Dorada is bringing in top chefs for a taco fiesta; and charity focused golf tournament Paws ‘n Claws concludes its day of fun in the sun with a large outdoor BBQ party.

San José del Cabo Art Walk  (April 5, 12, 19, 26)

The historic Distrito del Arte in San Jose del Cabo takes center stage each Thursday evening during high tourist season – November through June – when residents and visitors alike are invited to stroll its cobblestone streets and peruse the many eclectic fine arts galleries. Art Walk hours are 5 to 9 p.m, when the neighborhood comes alive with wine, cheese and guided tours, as well as colorful street artists and strolling mariachis. A chance to check out San Jose’s recent downtown makeover is another reason to make the Thursday night pilgrimage.

Paws n’ Claws Golf Tournament and BBQ  (April 8)

The biggest annual fundraiser for the Los Cabos Humane Society traditionally starts with a golf competition at one of Los Cabos’ many world-class courses and concludes with a gala fundraising dinner at a premier local fine dining establishment. The gorgeous Jack Nicklaus’ designed Palmilla will once again host this year’s tournament, with nine holes each on both the Mountain and Ocean layouts. This year, as last, a BBQ replaces the typical upscale dinner. Acre Restaurant, one of the leaders of the local farm-to-table movement, will provide tasty BBQ fixings to accompany the fundraising silent auction.

Sabores de Baja Festival in Miraflores  (April 15)

The small town of Miraflores is notable for several reasons, including the unusual longevity of its residents and its annual summer harvest festival celebrating pitahayas, the favorite fruit of the area’s indigenous inhabitants. Mainly, though, it is known as the foremost organic farming community in the Los Cabos municipality, the place the region’s best restaurants go to source their produce. It’s the perfect place, in other words, to host an organic food festival that focuses on the traditional cuisine and culture of Los Cabos. The 2nd annual Sabores de Baja (sabores translates as tastes or flavors) will be hosted by Doña Pame Restaurante from noon to 5 p.m. on April 15, and will feature live music from local idol Luna Itzel.

NORRA Mexican 1000  (April 20 – 27)

The world’s most rugged off-road race, the legendary Baja 1000, has for better than four decades been run under the SCORE (Southern California Off-Road Enthusiasts) banner. But that wasn’t always the case. Back when the Baja 1000 was inaugurated, in 1967, it was organized by NORRA (the National Off-Road Racing Association). NORRA returned to the peninsula’s off-road racing scene in a big way in 2010, when it kicked off the first Mexican 1000, a fun, vintage-style rally race meant to evoke the flavor of the early Baja 1000s. The new version revs up in Ensenada, then courses down the peninsula before concluding in Los Cabos, where it is celebrated with a huge after-party and awards ceremony.

2018 Taco Fest Los Cabos at Casa Dorada  (April 28)

On the final Saturday in April, many of the area’s best chefs will converge on the luxurious beachfront Casa Dorada, where they will compete to produce the most delicious version of Mexico’s most famous comfort food, the taco. An all-star cast of judges will crown a champ, but the true winners are guaranteed to be the guests, who get to sample both traditional and contemporary/creative taco entries from these very talented culinary craftsmen. Live music will also be featured.

Art, Music, Dance & Romance: A Guide to February Events in Los Cabos

February is the month for romance, as countries around the world celebrate courtship and love on St. Valentine’s Day (known in Mexico as El Dia de San Valentin, or, more commonly, El Dia del Amor y la Amistad). In Los Cabos, the competition to offer the most romantic Valentine’s Day activities and amenities often translates to special accommodations packages (for both resorts and villa rentals), as well as special multi-course meals and live entertainment at the area’s best restaurants.

Visitors to cape cities Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo this month will also discover abundant opportunities to immerse themselves in local art and culture, from Art Walk and Jazz Weekend in San Jose del Cabo to the annual Art Festival and Open Studios Tour in Todos Santos.

Carnaval, too, takes place in February. The yearly festival, which ends with “Fat Tuesday,” precedes the 4o days of Lent before Easter on the Catholic calendar. La Paz, capital city of Baja California Sur, is famed for the parades and live musical performances on its seaside malecón during this six-day bacchanal.

Art Walk in San Jose del Cabo (Feb. 1, 8, 15, 22)

Carnaval La Paz (Feb. 8 – 13)

There are two cities that host notable Carnaval celebrations on the Baja California peninsula:  Ensenada and La Paz. Carnaval, for the uninitiated, is the Catholic pre-Lenten celebration that captivates Rio de Janeiro and New Orleans each year, although in the latter city it is better known as Mardi Gras. In La Paz, the uninhibited six-day farewell to debauchery is centered on the capital city’s malecón, and includes voluminous food and drink, colorful parades and costumes, plenty of live music from high-profile performers, and the coronation of a festival king and queen. This year’s theme is Tierra de Encanto y Fantasía (Land of Charm and Fantasy).

Todos Santos Open Artists’ Studio Tour (Feb. 10 – 11)

Ever since painter Charles Stewart and his wife Mary Lou moved to Todos Santos in 1985, the town has been famed for its thriving artists’ colony. The best introduction to the region’s abundance of talented artists is the yearly Open Studios Tour, the 9th edition of which is scheduled for Feb. 10 – 11, 2018. Approximately 40 local artists will participate this year, including painters, sculptors, photographers, muralists, plein air painters, encaustic artists, jewelers, printmakers, collage artists, potters, and wood turners. The Palapa Learning Center will offer a special stop on the tour, and will showcase a sampling of 20 selected tour artists’ work for sale. Additionally, the Palapa Society’s child artists will also be working in their “studio” with work on display.

Valentine’s Day at Sunset da Mona Lisa (Feb. 14)

The jaw-dropping views of the 30-million-year-old granitic monuments at Land’s End in Cabo San Lucas, plus the Taittinger Champagne Terrace and superb seafood and Italian fare, are among the many reasons this place is a mecca for visiting couples, and wedding proposals are an almost daily occurrence. There are two seatings for the special amor focused Valentine’s Day dinner this year, which includes a welcoming cocktail, a six-course meal, live music, and of course the unforgettable sight of the sun exploding in a burst of color over the southernmost tip of the Baja California peninsula.

San Jose del Cabo Jazz Weekend (Feb. 16 – 17)

2018 marks the 6th edition of San José del Cabo Jazz Weekend, a festival dedicated to the freewheeling American musical style held yearly at the popular Plaza del Pescador, an outdoor mall across from the city’s resort-lined Playa Hotelera. Plaza del Pescador has only been around for a few years, but has quickly established a reputation for itself as a music venue, thanks to tenants such as Jazz Tapas Café and Rock&Brews, the restaurant chain started by KISS members Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley. Admission is free to the two-day music fest, which takes place from 5 to 11 p.m. on Feb. 16 – 17.

Los Cabos Events 2017-18

Event Season Kicks Off in Los Cabos

Los Cabos has now become such a popular year-round travel destination that the traditional lines between high and low tourist seasons have become blurred. The distinction is still observed, however, when it comes to event scheduling. October remains the banner month for signature local events in Cabo San Lucas, symbolically kicking off the high season – October through May – in high style.

Sammy Hagar Birthday Concerts – October 9, 11, 13 and 14 in Cabo San Lucas

Every year, loyal “Redheads” from around the world flock to Cabo San Lucas for Sammy Hagar’s Birthday Bashes. This year is particularly big, as the former Van Halen and Montrose frontman turns 70 on October 13. An all-star cast of visiting musicians – including fellow members of The Circle:  Michal Anthony, Jason Bonham, and Vic Johnson – will join the “Red Rocker” for a series of special shows at Cabo Wabo Cantina, the landmark local bar and live music venue that Hagar opened with Van Halen bandmates in 1990.

Patron Saint Festival – Oct. 17 – 22 in Cabo San Lucas

Many place names in Spanish, particularly those in the “New World,” were bestowed by explorers based on the Catholic calendar, in which days were associated with different saints. Cabo San Lucas was named for Saint Luke, whose feast day is October 18. Each year, the Land’s End city hosts a Patron Saint Festival (called Fiestas Patronales), remembering the day – October 18, 1541 – when the place was named by Spanish sailor Francisco de Bolaños. Highlights include the crowning of a festival queen, and a colorful parade down Marina Boulevard.

Los Cabos Billfish Tournament – Oct. 15 – 19 in Cabo San Lucas

Bisbee’s two cash-rich tournaments get most of the publicity, but the Los Cabos Billfish Tournament also sends out a siren call to big-game fishermen eager for big-money prizes and jackpots. The three tournaments combined this year are expected to pay out over $4,735,000 to the winners. The 19th annual LCBT has three entry levels:  a $5,000 base entry for each 6-person team; daily jackpots for the largest tuna, wahoo and dorado; and daily billfish release jackpots.

Bisbee’s Los Cabos Offshore – Oct. 19 – 22 in Cabo San Lucas

Commonly known as “Little Bisbee’s,” to differentiate it from the “Big Bisbee’s” Black & Blue marlin fishing tournament that also takes place each October in Los Cabos, the Los Cabos Offshore dates back to 2002, and is considered a more laid-back, charity focused endeavor than the Black & Blue. Cash prizes are awarded to the teams with the three biggest qualifying fish in the game and billfish categories at the LCO, and large amounts of money are always donated to local causes.

Bisbee’s Black & Blue – Oct. 24 – 28 in Cabo San Lucas

Oft billed as “The Super Bowl of Sportfishing” thanks to its million dollar payouts, this marlin focused fishing tournament originally premiered in 1981, and remains to this day the highest profile annual event in Los Cabos. The $4.165 million payout in 2006 was and still is the largest in sportfishing history. Those who can’t afford the base entry and jackpot fees can still gather each day behind Puerto Paraiso to watch the weigh-ins.

David Pack’s Legends Live at Bisbee’s Black & Blue – Oct. 28 in Cabo San Lucas

Bisbee’s Black & Blue is going bigger than ever this year, bringing in five rock star legends – David Pack of Ambrosia, John Elefante of Kansas, Kelly Keagy of Night Ranger, Wally Palmar of The Romantics, and Jim Peterik of Survivor and .38 Special – to perform at the post-tournament awards banquet on the A.P.I. Cruise Ship Pier in Cabo San Lucas. The concert is part of a fundraising effort for the Bisbee’s Fish and Wildlife Conservation Fund.
