Bisbee’s Back for Another Year of Turning Fishermen into Millionaires

Earlier this month, Bisbee’s held its 18th annual East Cape Offshore. It was one of their most successful tournaments ever, with 136 billfish boated in the 3-day event, and a record spread of teams (11 of 64) claiming a share of over half a million dollars in prize money.

But as fans of fishing’s most celebrated series of tournaments know, the East Cape classic is only a prelude to Bisbee’s marquee annual events:  the Los Cabos Offshore and Black & Blue marlin fishing tournaments, held each October in Cabo San Lucas.

The Black & Blue gets star billing, of course. Not only is it the oldest of Bisbee’s three annual tournament in the Los Cabos municipality – it premiered in 1981 – it is also the most lucrative, living up to its hype as “the world’s richest fishing tournament” and “the Super Bowl of sportfishing.” The 2006 payout of $4,165,960 remains the largest in sportfishing history, and nobody turned their nose up at last year’s kitty of 3.5 million.

Cabo San Lucas in October is the place and time where skilled anglers can become millionaires overnight. In 2016, Julio Fernandez’s team aboard Quiteña pocketed a cool $2,183,000 for bagging a bruising 534 lb. black marlin.

This year’s Black & Blue is slated to take place October 24 – 28, with registration on the first day, an awards ceremony on the last, and three days of fishing in between. Those visiting the Land’s End city during the event can watch daily drama as fish are weighed on the marina boardwalk in front of Puerto Paraiso. The drama is a little more tense, however, if you happen to be the one who caught the fish! Registration remains $5,000 per team, or $71,000 across the board for all jackpots and challenges.

The Los Cabos Offshore serves as a warm-up – it is affectionately known as “Little Bisbee’s,” to differentiate it from the Black & Blue, or “Big Bisbee’s” – and kicks off the biggest nine days of the year on the Cabo San Lucas sporting calendar. Scheduled for October 19 – 22, the LCO is thought of as a friendlier, more charity focused tournament than the high-dollar main event that follows. That said, last year’s winners aboard Wild Hooker shared over a quarter of a million dollars. Not bad for a few days on the water.

There’s an old saying that “the worst day fishing is better than the best day at work.”

Where Bisbee’s is concerned, that could be rephrased “the best day fishing is more profitable than the best year at work.”

Summer Means Fishing Tournaments Galore in Los Cabos

Bisbee’s trio of annual fishing tournaments in Los Cabos get plenty of attention, and with good reason. Not only have they set the standard for regional big game sport fishing competitions, they hand out the checks to prove it:  from the six figure payouts at the East Cape and Los Cabos Offshore to the million dollar plus windfalls that earned the Black & Blue its nickname as “the world’s richest fishing tournament.”

But despite their deserved fame, those are only a few of many fishing tournaments staged in Los Cabos during the late summer and early autumn months. Here are five more that every Baja bound angler should have marked on his or her calendar for 2017.

21st Annual Stars & Stripes Golf & Fishing Tournament

Five days of world-class golf, fishing and entertainment are the lures, but the biggest payouts at this annual tournament in San Jose del Cabo are for charity. Over the last two decades, Stars & Stripes has raised over 23 million dollars for worthy causes. Hilton Los Cabos hosts again this year, with festivities scheduled from June 22 – 27. Mickey Thomas of Jefferson Starship and Kelly Hansen of Foreigner headline the visiting “Rock Star Collective.”

Ultimate Waterman’s Challenge

Fishing is only a part of this first ever challenge, and it’s not the kind you probably think. Former pro surfer Tim Curran and adventure company Mansa Vida are sponsoring this brand new contest, whose purpose is to identify and celebrate those with the all-around nautical mastery to be called “watermen” or “waterwomen.” Spearfishing is one of the competitive categories, along with swimming, surfing, stand up paddle boarding and prone paddling. The event will take place from July 12 – 17, and is hosted by The Cape: A Thompson Hotel, a boutique luxury property overlooking surf mecca Playa Monumentos.

13th Annual East Cape Dorado Shoot Out

If you don’t own a brand new, fully loaded 4×4 pickup truck before the annual East Cape Dorado Shoot Out, you could when it’s all over. All you have to do is reel in the heaviest dorado on Saturday, July 15. Second place, third place and side jackpots are also on the line – last year they tallied over $80,000 – as are over $20,000 in raffle items. Dinner and live music accompany the post-tournament awards ceremony at Hotel Palmas de Cortez in Los Barriles.

 Señoritas Blue Water Classic

That’s right, the inaugural Señoritas Blue Water Classic is for ladies only! The organizers of this newly launched tournament on the East Cape feel women are a force to be reckoned with in the fishing world, and they aim to prove it by writing big checks to the distaff teams that haul in the largest marlin, tuna, wahoo and dorado. The event is scheduled for July 20 – 22, with final weigh-ins followed by an awards ceremony at the historic Hotel Buenavista Beach Resort.

East Cape Gold Cup Wahoo Jackpot Tournament

Like the East Cape Dorado Shoot Out, the Gold Cup rules are pretty cut and dried. Catch the fattest wahoo on Saturday, August 26, and you’ll drive away in a brand new Volkswagen Golf with a bag full of dinero. Over $100,000 total in cash and prizes are on the line for this one, which like many of the summer events takes place on the Los Cabos municipality’s gorgeous East Cape. Traditional regional hotel brand Van Wormer Resorts is the host, with the awards ceremony to be held at Hotel Palmas de Cortez in Los Barriles.

Bisbee’s Set for Another Season of Turning Fishermen into Millionaires

Only one of Bisbee’s three annual Black & Blue Tournaments in Los Cabos actually turn fishermen into millionaires, but all three offer potential windfall profits while also showcasing some of the finest big-game sport fishing on the planet.

Here are the dates for anglers to target in 2017.

East Cape Offshore – August 1-5

Since premiering in 2000, Bisbee’s East Cape Offshore has become the signature fishing competition on the Los Cabos municipality’s gorgeous East Cape. Considered by many to be a throwback to the “good old days” of Baja fishing, the event rewards tuna and dorado catches as well as marlin, and is hosted by the Buena Vista Beach Resort in Buenavista. Over a half million dollars in prize money was distributed in 2016, including over $100,000 to the winners. Base entry is $1,500 per team, with an Early Bird registration deadline of June 30.

Los Cabos Offshore – October 19-22

Affectionately known as “Little Bisbee’s” to differentiate it from the “Big Bisbee’s” Black & Blue tournament that follows hard on its heels each October in Cabo San Lucas, the Los Cabos Offshore is nonetheless a significant payday for its winners:  over $772,000 was divvied up among overall and jackpot winners in 2016. The tournament is generally a more casual, charity focused affair than its “big brother,” and has been since it was added to the schedule in 2002. Primary beneficiaries of tournament largesse include a local orphanage, Casa Hogar.

Black & Blue – October 24-28

The granddaddy of them all; Bisbee’s has grown from a six-team event with $10,000 on the line in 1981, to what is now referred to…quite accurately…as “The World’s Richest Fishing Tournament,” with crowds of spectators gathering each afternoon during competition to see enormous game and billfish weighed out on the scales at Puerto Paraiso Mall on the Land’s End city’s marina boardwalk.

The overall payout of $4,165,960 in 2006 remains the largest in the history of the sport. Last year, Julio Fernandez and his Quiteña team bested 120 other boats by reeling in a 534 lb. black marlin, earning themselves a cool $2,183,000. Baja Cantina, dockside in Cabo San Lucas, remains the headquarters for the 37th edition, with the post tournament awards ceremony scheduled to take place at the affiliated Maria Corona restaurant.

August 31 is the deadline for the Early Bird drawing, which awards one free entry to the following year’s tournament. For registration information, visit www.bisbees.com.

Get Rich or Let Fly Tryin’ – Fishing Los Cabos Tournaments 2016

Like the bumper sticker says, there are “no bad days” in Cabo San Lucas…at least where fishing is bisbees-002concerned.

But let’s face it. There are only a few times each year when it can make you a millionaire.

Don’t believe me? Ask Tampico native Julio Fernandez, whose Quiteña team took top honors in this year’s Bisbee’s Black & Blue marlin fishing tournament. Fernandez’s day-long battle with a bruising 534 lb. black marlin translated to a payout of over $2.1 million U.S. dollars at last Saturday night’s awards banquet at Puerto Paraiso Mall on the Land’s End city’s marina boardwalk.

Not bad for a day on the water, huh?

Bisbee’s, whose flagship Black & Blue is billed as “The World’s Richest Fishing Tournament,” disbursed $4,165,960 at its 2006 event, the largest overall cash payout in sport fishing history.

At this year’s affair, over $3.5 million was divvied up among the 121 boats that entered. Fernandez got the million dollar plus purse and a lifetime of bragging rights, but Capt. Frank D’Anna and the crew aboard C-Bandit didn’t fare too badly either, bagging a 416 lb. black for a second place prize of $685,000.

The Black & Blue is the third of Bisbee’s annual trio of fishing tournaments in Baja California Sur, following the East Cape and Los Cabos Offshores. The latter, affectionately referred to as “Little Bisbee’s,” is a charity focused event that traditionally takes place the week before “Big Bisbee’s.” Master-caster Rick Daab and his Wild Hooker team earned $263,591 in winning the 2016 LCO, but the big winner was the Los Cabos municipality, as thousands of pounds of fish were donated to feed children in the area’s low-income neighborhoods.

In addition to Bisbee’s two big-time October tournaments, the region also welcomed back the annual Los Cabos Billfish Tournament on Oct. 11 – 15, which angler John DeDominac won with a 378 lb. black marlin.

If you think your chances of hitting it rich fishing this year are over, though, better think again.  The world’s richest tuna fishing tournament, the WON Tuna Jackpot, will take place in Cabo San Lucas Nov. 2 – 5, with an estimated 150 teams will competing for over $700,000 in prize money.

Los Cabos Fishing Report – October 16, 2016

October 16, 2016 76_johnolson130tuna

As more crowds of visiting anglers continue to arrive in progressively increasing numbers the weather continues to cooperate, no late season storms are forecast at this time to head our direction, ocean conditions are great, light winds, minimal swells,  with clear sunny skies. Daytime temperatures are still quite warm, though the early mornings are now starting to have a slight chill. Water temperatures are still warm, should start to cool off in the next couple of weeks.

The main bite now has been centered from the Gordo Banks to Iman, San Luis, Desteladera and Vinorama. This is where anglers are targeting the yellowfin tuna, sizes have ranged from small football five pound fish to as large as 300 lb. Average yellowfin being landed have been in the 10 to 40 lb. class. Best bait for this action has been strips of squid, though some of the larger hook ups have been while trolling baits such as chihuil, bolito or skipjack. Best chance at hooking into a cow sized tuna has been from around the Gordo Banks, though numbers of these big yellowfin are very limited, the one yellowfin tuna we heard about that was over 300 lb. was caught by local anglers in the afternoon. Charters are finding more numbers of tuna on the northern grounds, also more chance at catching a variety of species from these grounds. Daily catches have ranged from a couple of fish to over a dozen, some days fish were biting early, some days late, still a very strong current to deal with.

Only an occasional wahoo being landed, up to 45 lb., striking trolled baits and Rapalas, though these elusive fish are definitely in the area, as water temperature cools some we expect they will become more active. Same deal for dorado, scattered action on mostly small sized fish, some people are killing dorado of very small size, does not really make sense, should be released to mature and reproduce. Off the bottom more triggerfish than anything else, but also a mix of cabrilla, various pargo species, rainbow runner, pompano, amberjack and others, though sporadic action off the bottom and at times not easy with the fast drift.

Billfish action has seen a mix of striped marlin, black marlin and sailfish, though no big numbers, trolling larger baitfish around the offshore high spots has produced black marlin hook ups, fish up to 380 lb. were reported, stories of larger fish lost.

No inshore action to be reported, surf anglers are catching a few jack crevalle and roosterfish in the marina channel area, also we saw the season’s first sierra.

The combined panga fleets launching out of La Playita, Puerto Los Cabos Marina sent out approximately 117 charters for the week, with anglers reporting a fish count of: 2 black marlin, 6 striped marlin, 7 sailfish, 565 yellowfin tuna, 58 dorado, 12 wahoo, 28 yellow snapper, 15 leopard grouper, 1 sierra, 4 barred pargo, 18 bonito, 1 pompano, 23 huachinango, 3 dogtooth snapper, 8 amberjack, 21 rainbow runner and 225 triggerfish.

Good fishing, Eric

Bisbees Black and Blue Marlin Tournament October 20-24 2015

There are few places in the world with better fishing than Los Cabos.
Because of this, the region is home safe_image.phpto a number of fantastic fishing tournaments each and every year. Many would argue that the crown jewel among these is the Bisbee’s Black & Blue tournament, which is set to take place on October 20-24, 2015. While all fishing tournaments involve a similar process (complete an entry form, pay your fees, and show-up to fish), there are key differences between various events.

The Bisbee’s Black & Blue tournament, for example, has a base entry fee of $5,000. You and your team will need to come-up with this money before you can officially register to compete. Once you’ve paid, you’ll be eligible to actually take part in the event, win prizes, and attend parties, dinners, and other special occasions that are intended specifically for participants.

It is important for prospective entrants to note that there are entry levels beyond the $5,000 base fee. If, for example, you are a truly serious angler, you might be interested in the $20,000 Chupacabra Challenge, which is new for 2015. You can learn more about all of the entry levels available to your team by visiting www.bisbees.com/ .

If you’ve never competed in a fishing tournament before, the Bisbee’s Black & Blue probably isn’t the best place to start. If, however, you are interested in getting a team together for these types of events, attending as a spectator this year is an excellent idea. There is still plenty of time to book a room or a Cabo vacation home prior to the end of October.

If you would like assistance with your reservation, the staff at Los Cabos Villas would be thrilled to assist you. We are passionate about helping both fishing tournament teams and attendees alike when they are struggling to locate the ideal Los Cabos condominiums and houses for their stays in our beautiful region.
