Swinging into Summer – June Parties & Events in Los Cabos

June is an exciting time in Los Cabos, thanks to a slate of seasonal events that range from art and music

focused fiestas to outdoor adventures and prestigious sporting competitions.

The first month of summer, for example, sees the start of peak surf season on the Sea of Cortez side beaches of Los Cabos; most notably at Costa Azul, where Zippers surf break is ground zero for the area’s only World Surf League sponsored professional event: The Los Cabos Open of Surf.

June also ushers in the season for Los Cabos municipality’s yearly roster of cash-rich fishing tournaments, with two high-profile competitions.

We take a look at these events and more in our regular monthly preview of the region’s upcoming attractions….

San José del Cabo Art Walk  (June 7, 14, 21, 28)

The historic Distrito del Arte in San Jose del Cabo takes center stage each Thursday evening during high tourist season – November through June – when residents and visitors alike are invited to stroll its cobblestone streets and peruse the many eclectic fine arts galleries. Art Walk hours are 5 to 9 p.m, when the neighborhood comes alive with wine, cheese and guided tours, as well as colorful street artists and strolling mariachis.

This season’s Art Walk has been the biggest and best yet; and there is still time to enjoy the event before it goes on hiatus:  four more Thursday evening celebrations are scheduled before the end of June.

For those unable to experience this festival of sights, sounds and flavors before then, don’t worry. Art Walk returns at the beginning of November each year, with all new art and, traditionally, personalized altars as part of Day of the Dead remembrances throughout Mexico.

5th Annual Cabo Summer Slam/Pelagic Triple Crown of Fishing Tournament  (June 7 to 9)

Pelagic, a Newport Beach based company, is one of the world’s leaders when it comes to lifestyle apparel and high-performance gear associated with watersports like fishing, boating, diving and surfing. So it’ll come as no surprise that the 5th annual Cabo Summer Slam, slated for June 7 – 9, offers some high stakes prizes and jackpots. Over $200,000 is on the line in 2018, meaning it’s the biggest Cabo San Lucas based tournament until Bisbee’s big money competitions in October.

This is a bet big, win big scenario. General entry is $2,500 for tournament teams, or $12,500 to cover base entry plus all daily jackpots. Participating fishermen will be targeting the usual suspects: marlin (blue, black and striped), sailfish, tuna, dorado and wahoo; but prizes are spread across four divisions.

Prizes will be given to teams that catch and release the most aggregate billfish points, and to those weighing the heaviest two-fish total of each gamefish species – tuna, wahoo and dorado – during the two-day tournament. As with most local tournaments, however, the biggest money is paid out in jackpots.

Los Cabos Open of Surf  (June 11 to 17)

There are two World Surf League sponsored surfing events held annually on the Baja California peninsula: one is a Big Wave Tour event off Todos Santos Island near Ensenada; the other is the Los Cabos Open of Surf, hosted each June at Zippers point break off Playa Costa Azul in San José del Cabo.

When it premiered in 2013, the Los Cabos Open of Surf was a 6-star men’s event under the ASP (the forerunner to the WSL). Women joined the fun in 2014, and since 2015, the LCOS has been a QS 6000 event solely for women and junior men and women.

The 2018 competition is scheduled for June 11 – 17, and like events in previous years, will be a celebration of all aspects of surf culture, from beach parties and culinary fetes to nightly entertainment featuring DJs and live musical performers.

Fiesta de la Música in San José del Cabo  (June 23)

In 1982, the first Fete de la Musique was held in Paris, where it was scheduled to coincide with the summer solstice, the longest day of the year. Flash forward 36 years, and the Fete de la Musique is no longer solely a French celebration, but a worldwide phenomenon that takes place annually in over 450 cities in 12o countries around the globe. For the past 10 years, that list of cities has included San Jose del Cabo, where the celebration is known by its Spanish name, La Fiesta de la Musica.

This summer symphony is free and open to all musicians who’d like to participate, from amateurs to professionals, across all musical genres. The only prerequisite for participants and spectators – for whom admission is also free – is a love for music, a passion that’s so pervasive internationally that music is often referred to as the universal language. The art form’s universality, in fact, provides the context for the event’s local motto: “la fiesta de todos y para todos” (“the party from all and for all).

Over the past decade, the Fiesta de la Musica has become so important and so beloved by the local community that it’s now considered the premier music festival in Los Cabos. Certainly, it’s the most robustly attended, drawing over 25,000 people annually. The 2018 edition is slated for Saturday, June 23 – 6 p.m. to 2 a.m. – with some 100 or more bands and musical acts expected to perform throughout the city’s historic downtown area.

22nd Annual Stars and Stripes Golf and Fishing Tournament  (June 28 to July 1)

The 22nd edition of what amounts to the complete Cabo lifestyle experience – fishing, golf, music, food and drinks, beach days, and more – is scheduled to return June 28.

The fishing tournament has proved to be most enduringly popular part of Stars & Stripes. It launches from beautiful Chileno Bay, with participating anglers vying to bag the biggest tuna, dorado, wahoo, sailfish, and blue, black and striped marlin. For 2018, start times have been pushed back to allow a more vacation-like approach.

But golf, too, is a major draw. Participants this year have the choice of nine or 18-hole tournament outings at Puerto Los Cabos, which currently boasts 27 spectacular holes from champion golfers Jack “The Golden Bear” Nicklaus and Greg “The Great White Shark” Norman. Nine of the holes at Puerto Los Cabos are brand new, so tournament entrants will be among the first to play them.

Nightly musical entertainment is also a distinguishing feature of Stars & Stripes. In past years, rock stars like Sammy Hagar, The Doobie Brothers, Three Dog Night, and Kenny Loggins have played their biggest hits. This year the headliner is Don Felder, former lead guitarist for the Eagles, and a co-writer of the iconic song Hotel California. Plenty of other acts are also on tap, including The Downtown Band, and the festivities will once again be hosted by Shawn Parr, AKA “The Ambassador of Country Music”.

Thursday Night Art Walks Celebrate the Beauty, History and Culture of San Jose del Cabo

On the surface level, the weekly Art Walks in San Jose del Cabo are a celebration of the town’s talented artists and its dozens of colorful art galleries.

But on a deeper level the Art Walks – held each Thursday from 5 to 9 p.m., November through June – are a celebration of San Jose del Cabo itself. The event is, in a very real sense, a small-scale canvas upon which an entire community and its rich culture and history are presented to the world.

Many people think Los Cabos was born with the beginning of the tourist age, and this is at least partly true. The name Los Cabos wasn’t created until 1981, when it was given to the peninsula’s newly designated and southernmost municipality. The town of San Jose del Cabo, however, is much, much older. In fact, it’s one of the oldest continually occupied communities in the Californias.

It was at San Jose del Cabo that the first Jesuit mission in Los Cabos was built in 1730. San Jose was chosen as a site in large part because of its abundant freshwater resources, which had also been luring treasure-laden galleons since colonial Spain inaugurated the lucrative Manila–Acapulco trade route in 1565.

San Jose del Cabo was a hotbed of resistance during the Mexican–American War, site of both a pitched battle and a prolonged siege against the invaders. The region’s wartime political leader was a native son of San Jose del Cabo named Mauricio Castro Cota, and a young officer named Jose Antonio Mijares passed into local legend after he died leading a charge against U.S. forces on Nov. 20, 1847. The spot on which he fell has been the site of a public monument ever since.

Certainly, the architectural monuments of the downtown area are among the most beautiful in all of Baja California Sur. A depiction of the death of the first local Jesuit missionary – Nicolas Tamaral, who was killed by indigenous inhabitants after an ill-fated ban on polygamy – is set above the main doors of the beautiful old Catholic church (Parroquia San Jose), one of many important historical sites located near the main square of Plaza Mijares. City Hall, with its distinctive clock tower, was completed in 1930, and today houses wonderful murals depicting the history of the area, and of the country at large.

The first hotel in Los Cabos, Fisher House, opened in 1951, about a block from the old church. The small property, owned by Carmen Fisher, predated the now legendary Hotel Palmilla by a full six years. These and other monuments are living reminders of San Jose’s long and storied history…but the downtown area has also recently received a thoroughly modern facelift, so that old and new co-exist side-by-side.

The weekly Art Walks welcome visitors into the heart of this special place for romantic perambulations, not only through the officially designated Distrito del Arte – with its charming cobblestone streets – but throughout the historic downtown area at large.

Artists and art lovers open their galleries to showcase their latest offerings, downtown monuments like City Hall and Parroquia San Jose are outlined by colorful lights, arts and crafts makers spread out their wares on tables or along the sidewalks, wandering musicians serenade passersby sipping wine, or those taking a breather at local bars and restaurants.

There are plenty of both, by the way. San Jose del Cabo is home to the original Baja Brewing Company and dozens of superb restaurants, from Mexican traditionalists like Jazmin’s and La Lupita to internationally representative eateries like La Dolce.

This season’s Art Walk has been the biggest and best yet; and there is still time to enjoy the event before it goes on hiatus:  eight more Thursday evening celebrations are scheduled before the end of June.

For those unable to experience this festival of sights, sounds and flavors before then, don’t worry. Art Walk returns at the beginning of November each year, with all new art and, traditionally, personalized altars as part of Day of the Dead remembrances throughout Mexico.

A Parade of Fiestas: May Events in Los Cabos

Before the summer parade of fishing tournaments and fruit festivals begins, spring flowers for a final month in Los Cabos, showcasing its signature blend of food, wine, art and fashionable late-night fiestas.

The annual White Party at the ME Cabo resort on Medano Beach is perhaps the most eagerly awaited May event in Los Cabos, one whose popularity dates back to the pre-Hurricane Odile days of the Nikki Beach Club. Each year around Memorial Day weekend, ME Cabo’s onsite nightclub – now Blue Marlin Ibiza, formerly Nikki Beach – hosts an elegant all-white soiree that features world-class DJs, VIP bottle service, exotically clad dancers, and a massive midnight fireworks show.

This may come as a surprise to some visitors, who expect Cinco de Mayo – the anniversary of the victory of Mexican forces over the French at the Battle of Puebla in 1862 – to be the ultimate springtime fiesta. Cinco de Mayo was actually popularized in the U.S. and is not celebrated to any significant extent in Los Cabos. Local bars may offer some Cinco de Mayo margarita specials, but that’s about it.

No need to worry, though. The month of May brings plenty of other notable holidays and events.

San José del Cabo Art Walk  (May 3, 10, 17, 24, 31)

The historic Distrito del Arte in San Jose del Cabo takes center stage each Thursday evening during high tourist season – November through June – when residents and visitors alike are invited to stroll its cobblestone streets and peruse the many eclectic fine arts galleries. Art Walk hours are 5 to 9 p.m, when the neighborhood comes alive with wine, cheese and guided tours, as well as colorful street artists and strolling mariachis. A chance to check out San Jose’s recent downtown makeover is another reason to make the Thursday night pilgrimage.

483rd La Paz Foundation Festival  (May 3 – 5)

Although the first European to set foot on the Baja California peninsula was mutineer Fortun Ximenez – who arrived with ill-tempered crew sometime in late 1533 – the residents of La Paz celebrate the day his superior, conquistador par excellence Hernan Cortes, came ashore a year and a half later. That date, May 3, 1535 has been enshrined as the official foundation of La Paz, even though Cortes himself called the place Santa Cruz. This anniversary is remembered with an annual festival in Baja California Sur’s capital city featuring activities and concerts, as well as a traditional reenactment of the first landing of the Spaniards.

El Día de la Madre  (May 10)

As in other countries, Mother’s Day in Mexico is an occasion to celebrate moms for all they do; showering them with candy, flowers and other gifts. Many area restaurants offer special menus for Mother’s Day, and local children often put on mom-themed shows at schools and cultural pavilions. The main difference between Mother’s Day in the U.S. and México is the date. In the U.S., mothers are honored on the second Sunday in May. In México, the date remains the same each year:  May 10th.

Gastrovino Food & Wine Festival  (May 19 – 20)

Attention gourmands and oenophiles: outside perhaps the annual Sabor a Cabo shindig in Los Cabos, Gastrovino is the best food and wine festival in Baja California Sur. Held each April or May in the state’s only pueblo magico, Todos Santos, Gastrovino is organized by the owners of a local wine and olive oil shop called La Bodega de Todos Santos and features a weekend chockablock with tantalizing tasting opportunities. The pairing dinner at legendary Hotel California is one of many recurring highlights, but the “Big Cheese,” so to speak, is the Sunday main event on the town square. There, dozens of wineries from Baja’s Valle de Guadalupe share their palate-pleasing wares, as do many of the region’s best restaurants. Live music is also a staple, as is a silent auction to benefit local programs for children.

White Party at ME Cabo/Blue Marlin Ibiza  (May 26)

For many years, the highlight of the social season was the fabulous White Party thrown each May by Nikki Beach Club at the ME Cabo Hotel on Médano Beach. Nikki Beach never reopened following Hurricane Odile in 2014, and ME Cabo itself was slow to recover, needing 18 months of repairs and renovations before it welcomed guests again in March 2016. Luckily for local party goers Blue Marlin Ibiza, the club that ultimately replaced Nikki Beach, has taken over the tradition and returned the White Party to its former glory. Internationally acclaimed DJ Roger Sanchez rocked the house in 2017, headlining a hedonistic celebration that included the event’s signature midnight fireworks display over Médano Beach. The 2018 White Party, scheduled for May 26th, is expected to be bigger and better than ever, with legendary English DJ Paul Oakenfold taking over the primary house rocking duties.

The Fiesta de la Musica Celebrates its 10th Anniversary in June with Performances from Over 100 Bands

In 1981 a French director of music and culture, inspired by a statistic that claimed half the country’s children played a musical instrument, began dreaming of a way to engage this musical spirit en masse. Soon after, in 1982, the first Fete de la Musique was held in Paris, where it was scheduled to coincide with the summer solstice, the longest day of the year.

Flash forward 36 years, and the Fete de la Musique is no longer solely a French celebration, but a worldwide phenomenon that takes place annually in over 450 cities in 12o countries around the globe. For the past 10 years, that list of cities has included San Jose del Cabo, the oldest and most populous of the two cape cities (Cabo San Lucas is the other) that comprise the modern-day municipality of Los Cabos. In San Jose, however, the celebration is known by its Spanish name, La Fiesta de la Musica.

For those who won’t be in the area for the Fiesta de la Musica in June, Los Cabos and its surrounding environs offer plenty of other opportunities to hear great music from acclaimed performers. San Jose del Cabo is also famed for its Jazz Festival, which draws huge crowds to the Plaza del Pescador each February; and its Patron Saint festival every March features five days of live music, as well as a parade and regional food and drink.

Cape sister Cabo San Lucas hosts its own kind of musical celebration in October, when rock star Sammy Hagar throws a series of birthday bashes at Cabo Wabo Cantina, the nightclub he founded with his former Van Halen bandmates back in 1990. The Land’s End city’s biggest food festival, Sabor a Cabo, also brings in big-name headliners each December, from Mexican rock gods Mana to funk-soul legends like Earth Wind & Fire.

Todos Santos, a one-hour drive north of Cabo San Lucas, boasts its own rock star pedigree. The town’s Tropic of Cancer Concert Series, which draws alt-rock bands from across the U.S. and Mexico each January, grew out of the Todos Santos Music Festival that was originally founded by former R.E.M. guitarist Peter Buck.

Racing, Tasting and Fundraising: April Events in Los Cabos

April in Los Cabos means the end of Spring Break and seasonal whale watching adventures, but the local event calendar doesn’t suffer in the slightest. On the contrary, the glorious springtime temperatures usher in a fresh set of outdoor cultural festivals and sporting competitions.

Off-road racing enthusiasts, particularly of the vintage rally sport variety, will love NORRA’s Mexican 1000, which offers challenging competitive conditions as well as a chance to revel in the nostalgia of what Baja racing looked like in the 1960s and 70s.

That race’s finish line fiesta takes place in San Jose del Cabo, and indeed what Los Cabos does best in April are celebrations centered around food and drink. The farming community of Miraflores, for example, is hosting an organic food festival; luxury beachfront resort Casa Dorada is bringing in top chefs for a taco fiesta; and charity focused golf tournament Paws ‘n Claws concludes its day of fun in the sun with a large outdoor BBQ party.

San José del Cabo Art Walk  (April 5, 12, 19, 26)

The historic Distrito del Arte in San Jose del Cabo takes center stage each Thursday evening during high tourist season – November through June – when residents and visitors alike are invited to stroll its cobblestone streets and peruse the many eclectic fine arts galleries. Art Walk hours are 5 to 9 p.m, when the neighborhood comes alive with wine, cheese and guided tours, as well as colorful street artists and strolling mariachis. A chance to check out San Jose’s recent downtown makeover is another reason to make the Thursday night pilgrimage.

Paws n’ Claws Golf Tournament and BBQ  (April 8)

The biggest annual fundraiser for the Los Cabos Humane Society traditionally starts with a golf competition at one of Los Cabos’ many world-class courses and concludes with a gala fundraising dinner at a premier local fine dining establishment. The gorgeous Jack Nicklaus’ designed Palmilla will once again host this year’s tournament, with nine holes each on both the Mountain and Ocean layouts. This year, as last, a BBQ replaces the typical upscale dinner. Acre Restaurant, one of the leaders of the local farm-to-table movement, will provide tasty BBQ fixings to accompany the fundraising silent auction.

Sabores de Baja Festival in Miraflores  (April 15)

The small town of Miraflores is notable for several reasons, including the unusual longevity of its residents and its annual summer harvest festival celebrating pitahayas, the favorite fruit of the area’s indigenous inhabitants. Mainly, though, it is known as the foremost organic farming community in the Los Cabos municipality, the place the region’s best restaurants go to source their produce. It’s the perfect place, in other words, to host an organic food festival that focuses on the traditional cuisine and culture of Los Cabos. The 2nd annual Sabores de Baja (sabores translates as tastes or flavors) will be hosted by Doña Pame Restaurante from noon to 5 p.m. on April 15, and will feature live music from local idol Luna Itzel.

NORRA Mexican 1000  (April 20 – 27)

The world’s most rugged off-road race, the legendary Baja 1000, has for better than four decades been run under the SCORE (Southern California Off-Road Enthusiasts) banner. But that wasn’t always the case. Back when the Baja 1000 was inaugurated, in 1967, it was organized by NORRA (the National Off-Road Racing Association). NORRA returned to the peninsula’s off-road racing scene in a big way in 2010, when it kicked off the first Mexican 1000, a fun, vintage-style rally race meant to evoke the flavor of the early Baja 1000s. The new version revs up in Ensenada, then courses down the peninsula before concluding in Los Cabos, where it is celebrated with a huge after-party and awards ceremony.

2018 Taco Fest Los Cabos at Casa Dorada  (April 28)

On the final Saturday in April, many of the area’s best chefs will converge on the luxurious beachfront Casa Dorada, where they will compete to produce the most delicious version of Mexico’s most famous comfort food, the taco. An all-star cast of judges will crown a champ, but the true winners are guaranteed to be the guests, who get to sample both traditional and contemporary/creative taco entries from these very talented culinary craftsmen. Live music will also be featured.

Need a New Car? Win a Summer Fishing Tournament on Los Cabos’ Beautiful East Cape

There’s never a bad time for a new ride. Maybe you’ve been thinking about a nice all-purpose vehicle, something equally at home in the city and country, useful for both work and play, perfect for family outings and date nights. Perhaps a crossover along the lines of a sporty 2018 Volkswagen Tiguan 5-door SUV, or a 2018 Volkswagen Amarok pickup truck with double-wishbone suspension.

Well, you could head down to your local Volkswagen dealership, but that would be expensive and probably involve a lot of time consuming paperwork.  We recommend heading to the Los Cabos municipality’s gorgeous East Cape instead, where you can spend a few sunny days fishing for trophy-sized wahoo and dorado, and stand a pretty good chance of winning a boatload of cash and a brand new set of wheels in the bargain.

Los Cabos has for decades been home to some of the world’s most famous fishing tournaments, but what many visitors may not know is that in addition to millionaire makers like Bisbee’s Black & Blue in Cabo San Lucas, the area also hosts two summer tournaments whose big prize is a brand new, fully-loaded automobile.

The 14th Annual East Cape Dorado Shootout

Since 2005, the beautiful East Cape community of Los Barriles has been hosting a one-day dorado fishing shootout. Dorado, for the uninitiated, is the Spanish word for what fishermen in the Western U.S. call mahi-mahi, and people in the Eastern U.S. typically refer to as dolphin or dolphinfish.

By any name, it’s a delicious food fish; and by any standards, the East Cape Shootout is one of the most popular annual fishing tournaments in Los Cabos, with an average turnout of about 130 teams per year.

Team entry for this year’s tournament, to be held July 21, is $500. That’s the ante for a shot at a new Amarok pickup and other prizes. Optional side jackpots can also be lucarative. Last year, jackpot purses alone totaled over $126,000.

The 2nd Annual East Cape Gold Cup Wahoo Jackpot Tournament

The Gold Cup Wahoo Jackpot may not have the history of the Dorado Shootout – the inaugural tournament was held in 2017 – but it follows along the same lines: same entry fee, same basic set-up. The only real difference is the focus for fishermen, who will shift their priorities from golden hued dorado to swift swimming wahoo, a tasty game fish capable of speeds up to 60 miles per hour.

This year’s tournament is slated for August 25 and will feature over $100,ooo in cash and prizes. In addition to the new Volkswagen Tiguan, lucrative rewards will be distributed to the second and third places finishers in the wahoo category. Booty is also in the cards for those who bag the biggest dorado and tuna, plus great raffle items like fishing tackle, lures, rods, tackle boxes and gift certificates.

Both tournaments are sponsored by Van Wormer Resorts, with the post-fishing awards ceremonies held at the regional group’s picturesque Palmas de Cortez property in Los Barriles.

Participants aren’t restricted to Van Wormer based accommodations, however. The East Cape – a 70-mile stretch of pristine coastline that extends northwards from San Jose del Cabo to the Bay of Palms – also boasts a premium selection of villa rentals, relaxing beachfront getaways available at surprisingly affordable rates.

Two Top 10 Players Commit to Los Cabos for 2018 ATP Tennis Tournament

Los Cabos is justifiably famed for its booming golf scene, with over a dozen world-class courses and counting in Cabo San Lucas, San Jose del Cabo and their connecting corridor. But the cape cities have also proved fertile for golf’s traditional country club partner, tennis.

The most high-profile example of this is the Los Cabos Open, an ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) sponsored tournament hosted each summer near Cabo San Lucas. Two of the world’s top 10 ranked men, American Jack Sock and Argentine Juan Martin del Potro, have already committed for the 2018 event, scheduled to take place July 30th to August 4th on the grounds of the Delmar International School.

“We wanted to count on at least one top 10,” said tournament director Geoffrey Fernandez, “but this year we have two.”

The Los Cabos Open (or Abierto Los Cabos as it is known is Spanish) is one of two ATP events held annually in Mexico, the other being the Mexican Open in Acapulco. The first Los Cabos Open tournament in 2016 featured 13 of the world’s 50 best players, and was won by hard serving Croatian Ivo Karlovic, who defeated Spanish star Feliciano Lopez in the final. The match had historic dimensions, as it featured the oldest finalists in an ATP event since 1977. Last year, American Sam Querrey accomplished the first Mexican Double, winning both the country’s professional tournaments in the same year. Juan Martin del Potro won in Acapulco a few weeks ago, so another Mexican Double is potentially in play this year.

In addition to Sock and del Potro, world number 20 Fabio Fognini, and 38th ranked Lopez have also confirmed. The defending Queen’s Club champion and a former French Open doubles champion, Lopez has appeared at all of the Los Cabos Opens to date, and has helped to promote the tournament to a broader audience with numerous media appearances on its behalf. Others who have committed for this year’s 3rd annual event include current no. 54 Ryan Harrison and a singles finalist from last year, Thanasi Kokkinakis. Last year’s champion, Sam Querrey, is also expected to return, but has not yet made it official.

The tournament takes place at the Delmar International School, a bilingual and bicultural education facility serving children K-12. Special facilities were built there for the first tournament in 2016, highlighted by a 3,500 seat stadium, grandstand and auxiliary couts, plus a hospitality center featuring fine food and drink, sponsor tents, and of course gorgeous views of Land’s End. Bank and financial services group Mifel and theater chain Cinemex remain the tournament’s primary sponsors, but other companies who have supported the LCO include ESPN, Pepsi, Adidas, Michelob and Mazda.

The Los Cabos Open’s early successes have put it on a path to equal, if not eventually surpass The Mexican Open. The latter has been around since 1993, and now offers over $1.6 million dollars in prize money as part of the ATP’s World Tour 500 series. The Los Cabos Open, by contrast, is an ATP 250 series men’s singles and doubles event with nearly $800,000 in prize money. That’s the most of any ATP 250 series event in the Americas, despite the fact that the tournament only premiered in 2016.

To put a few of those numbers in perspective, at the absolute top-level in tennis are the four Grand Slam tournaments (Wimbledon and the U.S., Australian and French Opens), followed by a single ATP Finals event, nine ATP World Masters Tour 1000 competitions, 13 ATP 500 series events, and 40 ATP 250s. Thus, the Los Cabos Open is currently among the 67 best tournaments in the world, and although it has only been around for three years, is already angling to move up to the top 27 by joining the Mexican Open on the ATP 500 roster.

That goal may take a few more years to accomplish, but there’s no question that tennis interest in Los Cabos is at an all-time high, and that this year’s Los Cabos Open will feature the best field in its short but memorable history.

Destination Golfers Rejoice! Six New Courses are Coming to Los Cabos

We know what you’re thinking. Doesn’t Los Cabos already have an incredible collection of world-class golf layouts
from a who’s who of prestigious course designers?

The answer is yes. In just over 30 years, since the first modest 9-hole muni was built at Punta Sur, Los Cabos has amassed one of the world’s finest collection of championship-level courses, with over a dozen stunning tracks from the likes of Jack Nicklaus, Tiger Woods, Greg Norman, Davis Love III and Tom Weiskopf.

It’s a golfing portfolio any region in the world would be proud of; in fact, in Golf Digest’s recently released rankings, Los Cabos boasts four of the world’s 100 best international courses. Golf Magazine has three of its 15 currently operating courses rated among the 100 best in the world, period.

What’s truly amazing, however, is that Los Cabos appears to be just getting started. As many as a half-dozen new courses are expected to open in the next few years, including challenging new layouts from Woods, Nicklaus, Norman, Fred Couples and Robert Trent Jones Jr.

Here is a brief overview of the glories destination golfers can look forward to in coming years…

Expanded Course Offerings at Puerto Los Cabos

Puerto Los Cabos already is home to what since 2008 has been the world’s only composite course between Jack Nicklaus and Greg Norman. The “Shark Meets the Bear” at this luxurious development outside San Jose del Cabo, which not only features golf, but high-end resorts, restaurants, a marina, a beautiful beach, and superb sculpture and cactus gardens. But one course – even with a front nine by Norman, and a back nine by Nicklaus – was never the goal. The idea was that eventually the two big-name golfers and designers would return and add to their original designs, giving PLC two full 18-hole courses: a private course from Norman, a public course from Nicklaus. Nicklaus’ second nine opens later this month, but since Norman’s is still years away, PLC will in the near-term showcase a 27-hole concept similar to that used by Palmilla Golf Club. Golfers can build their 18-hole experience from any of the three available 9-hole offerings.

The First Fred Couples Design in Los Cabos

Fred Couples only captured one major championship – the 1992 Masters Tournament at Augusta National – but his sweet, seemingly effortless swing and consistent play translated to over 60 total wins, and better than two decades of stardom on the PGA Tour. Now he’s coming to Los Cabos, designing the highly anticipated Twin Dolphin Golf Club. If the name Twin Dolphin sounds familiar, it’s because it is:  it was the name of a pioneer resort which originally opened in the Los Cabos tourist corridor during the 1970s. The reincarnated version will accompany Montage and Maravilla, two new resort and residential projects overlooking Bahia Santa Maria. Play is expected to begin later this year.

A New Greg Norman Course at Rancho San Lucas

Solmar Group is not only one of the premier Los Cabos hospitality brands, but a legacy company whose history is inextricably tied up with the growth of tourism in Cabo San Lucas. The group’s founder, Don Luis Bulnes Molleda, was the manager of the Land’s End community’s cannery before he partnered with Luis Coppola on Finisterra, and then opened his own Hotel Solmar in 1974. Rancho San Lucas is Solmar’s ambitious new resort and residential development on Cabo San Lucas’ Pacific Coast. It joins a portfolio that already includes Solmar Resort, Grand Solmar and Playa Grande, and will be centered around an 18-hole golf course from Norman that is expected be open by late 2018 or early 2019.

A Second Jack Nicklaus Course at Quivira

When legendary champion Jack Nicklaus kick-started the Los Cabos golfing boom in the early 1990s, his natural canvases were found at tourist corridor properties like Palmilla and Cabo del Sol. Now, with the success of Diamante and Nicklaus’ first magnificent effort at Quivira, the golf focus has shifted to the Pacific Coast. Quivira Golf Club opened in 2014 and has climbed the world rankings in near record time, so reports that Nicklaus is returning to design a second course for the Pueblo Bonito affiliated development counts as big news. Groundbreaking on the new layout is expected to happen next summer.

A Second Robert Trent Jones Jr. Course in Los Cabos

Robert Trent Jones Jr. is one of the least heralded Los Cabos course architects. There’s no secret why. He’s one of the few that has never won a major championship. Then again, he is the son of the most prolific designer ever, and a man who has designed over 270 courses around the world during his own acclaimed 50-year career. Jones helped put Los Cabos on the golfing map when television cameras caught whales breaching near a seaside green during a 1996 PGA Senior Grand Slam event at his Cabo Real course. Now he’s returning to design a second local loop, this time for luxury brand Four Seasons at their new Costa Palmas resort on Los Cabos’ gorgeous East Cape. Expect the new golf course to open in mid to late 2019.

A Third Tiger Woods Course at Diamante

Diamante ushered in the second wave of the Los Cabos golf boom with Davis Love III’s majestic links style Dunes Course, which has been showered in accolades ever since it opened in 2009. The Dunes may be the showpiece, but the star at Diamante is now 14-time major champion Tiger Woods, who has already designed two courses for the resort and residential development north of Cabo San Lucas – the parkland El Cardonal and the 12-hole Oasis short course – and has another in the development stages. Woods, who has made news recently with a return to form following years of back and knee-related injuries, will be a favorite at next month’s Masters Tournament. Groundbreaking on his third Diamante offering, a lush layout in the style of Shadow Creek in Las Vegas, is expected to begin in 2019.

The Complete Cabo Lifestyle Experience: Stars & Stripes Tournament Offers Golf, Fishing, Music, Beach Life and More

There are many reasons people choose to vacation in Los Cabos. There’s the gorgeous year-round weather, the beautiful beaches, the luxurious resorts and cliffside villas, the world-class golf courses and spectacular sportfishing.

Or one could simply want to attend the Stars & Stripes Tournament, which offers all of the above plus much, much more. Golf and fishing provide the competitive tournament aspect, but there are also beach days, spa visits, nightly dinners, and music from some of the world’s most recognizable performers.

The 22nd edition of what amounts to the complete Cabo lifestyle experience is scheduled to return June 28 – July 1, 2018.

Of all its attractions, fishing has proved to be most enduringly popular part of Stars & Stripes. No surprise, really, given that the tourism industries for cape cities Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo were built on big-game sportfishing. The tournament launches from beautiful Chileno Bay, with participating anglers vying to bag the biggest tuna, dorado, wahoo, sailfish, and blue, black and striped marlin. This year, start times have been pushed back to allow a more vacation-like approach.

Golf, too, is a major draw. The traditional holes also have their highlights. Norman designed one of the best holes in Baja California for the original Mission Course, a 213 yard par-3 that demands precise placement from a tee shot off the equivalent of a 10-story building. Although the green looks like a peculiarly shaped postage stamp from the elevated tee box, players are generally not as concerned with the difficult iron shot as they are awed by the incredible view: 10 miles of gorgeous coastline bordered by the Sea of Cortez and the mountains of the Sierra de la Laguna.

Although sporting competitions provide the tournament’s primary raison d’etre, many other pleasures (of the non-sporting type) are in store for attendees. “Play at La Playa” promises a sun-soaked day at a private beachfront estate, complete with lunch, cocktails and sandy fun. Host resort Hilton’s Eforea Spa is likewise on hand for soothing relaxation. All Stars & Stripes guests are eligible for one of the spa’s many pampering treatments and therapies.

Plenty of other acts are also on tap, including The Downtown Band, and the festivities will once again be hosted by Shawn Parr, AKA “The Ambassador of Country Music” and “The Voice of the Golden Globes.”

For all its features and attractions, the Stars & Stripes ultimate purpose is to raise money for worthy causes. Since 1997, the tournament has raised over $26 million dollars for youth-oriented charities, hosting live and silent auctions.

Spring Break for Adults: A Guide to March Events in Los Cabos

It’s easy to tell when March has arrived in Los Cabos. Playa El Medano, the longest and most popular beach in Cabo San Lucas, is awash in bikini and board shorts clad college students, many of whom are packed into Mango Deck for bawdy entertainment (banana eating and sex position contests, anyone?) and beverage service from Big Johnson, a mustachioed Pancho Villa look-alike whose holsters are packed not with pistols, but bottles of tequila.

For those whose idea of a good time no longer includes copious amounts of tequila shots – which is to say, more mature adults – the cape cities still have plenty to offer in March. In fact, March is one of the best months to experience traditional regional festivals, culture-oriented events that celebrate art, film, drama, and music…with plenty of regional food thrown in for good measure.

Here are five of our March favorites…

Todos Santos Film Festival (March 7 – 11)

This annual showcase for Mexican and Latin American films was founded in 1994, and is based each year at the historic Teatro-Cine Manuel Marquez de Leon, a landmark 70+ year old movie theater that overlooks the town square in Todos Santos. The 15th edition will include full-length films, as well as shorts, documentaries, and projects from the local Youth in Video program. Additional screenings will take place in nearby Pescadero, and Baja California Sur’s capital city, La Paz.

Baja Shakespeare Festival (March 9 – 11, 14 – 17)

For nearly 20 years, Baja Sur’s beautiful East Cape has welcomed visitors for fun-filled theater twists on cultural classics…often but not always Shakespeare. This year’s selection, The Baja Shake Up!, shows what happens when star-crossed lovers (from Romeo and Juliet) meet gangsters and gun molls (inspired by Woody Allen’s Bullets Over Broadway). The highly anticipated Camilla Ford directed theater production will be held during consecutive weeks at Hotel Buenavista Beach Resort.

Wine & Cheese Festival at Sheraton Grand Hacienda del Mar (March 10)

Want to know how locally made cheeses and wines from Baja’s Valle de Guadalupe stack up against the fancy competition from France and elsewhere? Then we recommend attending the 6th annual Queso & Vino Festival on March 10th at Sheraton Grand’s scenic and stylishly appointed Hacienda del Mar property. Each year, the resort packs its Salon Hacienda ballroom with wines and cheeses from around the world, adds live music for a more festive atmosphere, and later donates the proceeds to local charities for children.

El Triunfo Arts Festival  (March 11)

El Triunfo and San Antonio, two mountain hamlets about 35 and 40 miles south of La Paz, respectively, are the two oldest secular communities in the Californias (yes, that includes the U.S. state of California). Both were built on gold and silver mining, and in fact during the latter part of the 19th century El Triunfo was the wealthiest community in Baja California, with reportedly the highest concentration of pianos per capita in México. It was the first Baja town to boast luxuries like electricity and telephones, and its largest smokestack, dubbed Ramona, was built by none other than Gustave Eiffel. Today, the populations of El Triunfo and San Antonio number in the hundreds, but both retain their old-fashioned charm and offer abundant historical artifacts and attractions. The best time to visit the former is during its annual Festival Artesanal, when vendors line the streets hawking traditional food, art and clothing, and colorfully costumed men and women waltz around the town square.

Traditional Fiestas in San Jose del Cabo (March 14 – 19)

During the Spanish colonial period, many towns in Baja California and elsewhere in Mexico and Latin America were named according to the Catholic calendar. San Jose del Cabo’s first Spanish name, for instance, was San Bernabe, so named by Sebastian Vizcaino when he landed there on June 11, 1602, during the traditional Catholic feast day for Saint Barnabas. San Bernabe replaced Anuiti, the name given to the place by the indigenous Pericues, and was itself later replaced by San Jose del Cabo, the name of the Jesuit mission that opened in 1730. The city’s fiestas tradicionales, or fiestas patronales (as the patron saint festivals are typically known in Spanish), encompass nearly a week of celebrations, and include parades, live music, regional food and drinks (the ceviche preparation contest is an annual highlight), plus the coronation of an event king and queen. The festivities culminate on March 19, the official feast day of Saint Joseph.

NOTE:  Mexico has its own traditional Spring Break period, which coincides with Semana Santa (the Catholic Holy Week that concludes with Easter Sunday). Outside of Christmas, this is the busiest holiday period in the country, as students and families flock to coastal beach resorts for some well-earned rest and recreation. What this means for U.S. and Canadian tourists is an increased competition for hotel rooms. Thus, while we always recommend villa rentals as a more luxurious, memorable, and surprisingly affordable alternative to the resort experience, there is no better time to find out just how true this is than during Semana Santa.
