Fish All Day, Party All Night (And Maybe Win Lots of Money!): Three Great Reasons to Enter the 2021 Los Cabos Billfish Tournament

Who doesn’t like winning? Answer: nobody that we know.

We can guarantee Team El Suertudo likes it after taking home the biggest checks ($117,350 in 2019, $344,700 in 2020) during each of the last two Los Cabos Billfish Tournaments.

Despite the impressive prize pools (49 teams competed for $$742,500 in 2020), the Los Cabos Billfish Tournament is always going to be a bit overshadowed when it comes to fishing tournaments in Cabo San Lucas. After all, it takes place in October, when Bisbee’s hosts its even more lucrative Black and Blue and Los Cabos Offshore Tournaments (the two combined to offer over six million dollars in prize money last year).

But the LCBT doesn’t need to have the biggest name or offer the biggest prize pools to distinguish itself. That has never been its recipe for success.

The recipe for success for the Los Cabos Billfish Tournament is simple. Have fun fishing, and when the fishing is done, keep on having fun.

Or, as the organizer like to put it: “Fish all day, party all night!”

The fishing and fun will once again be on full display again for the 2021 edition of the tournament, which is scheduled to take place October 10th through the 14th (three days of fishing on the 11th, 12th and 13th, from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. local time following shotgun starts from both the Cabo San Lucas and Puerto Los Cabos marinas).

Also on display…an estimated three-quarters of a million dollars or more in prize money.

Base entry for the first of Cabo San Lucas’ iconic October fishing tournaments (the LCBT sets the stage for Bisbee’s events to follow) is $5,000 per team (up to six anglers), or $25,000 “all-in” to cover all the daily and optional jackpots.

Here’s how it works. All fishing must be done within a 40-mile radius of Cabo San Lucas, and the only species eligible to be caught are marlin (black, blue and striped), sailfish, spearfish, tuna (both yellowfin and bigeye), wahoo and dorado. All black and blue marlin must be 300 pounds or more to qualify. Minimum weight for tuna, wahoo and dorado is 25 lbs.

Here’s where it gets interesting, though. Only two marlin may be weighed per day, per boat, and only one per day per angler. And if they don’t meet the minimum weight requirement, teams are penalized 300 points, plus two points for every pound the fish is underweight. So if you catch a 280 lb. marlin it actually costs you 340 points!

For fish that do meet the minimum requirements, points are scored as follows: 300 points for every blue or black marlin officially caught and released (video verification required) or 1.5 points for every eligible blue or black marlin officially boated and brought in to the weight station.

The top three teams in billfish scoring over the course of the tournament are in the money…as of course are all the daily and optional jackpot winners for game and billfish.

For some perspective, El Suertudo’s winning tally in 2020 was 1244 points over three days of fishing, followed by 889.5 points for second place Stella June, and 793 for third place Artemis. A total of 49 teams and 256 anglers competed last year, catching a total of 70 qualifying billfish (3 blue marlin, 3 black marlin, 52 striped marlin, 1 sailfish, 1 spearfish).

The biggest single catch in 2020 was the 593 lb. black marlin caught by angler Hugo Pino (fight time: just over two and a half hours) for team Stella June, accounting for all of their second place points. It took a 350 lb. blue marlin and a 396 lb. black marlin for El Suertudo to top them.

Expect more great catches in 2021, and, after the fishing is all done, another fun-filled Awards Ceremony at Playa Grande’s picturesque Beachside Terrace.

Can El Suertudo make it a “threepeat” with a third consecutive victory this year? Will combined prize money top one million dollars in 2021?

There’s only one way to find out, and that’s by entering. Well actually, you could just wait for us to tell you what happened. But trust us; it’s a lot more fun when you’re one of the lucky people fishing all day, partying all night, and quite possible making lots of money too!

Los Cabos by the Numbers: The Latest on Travel Trends and Safety Based on Current Statistics

Los Cabos is one of the world’s most popular and beloved tourist destinations, and although the past two years have certainly been challenging for the destination, and for tourism in general, the latest numbers show some very positive trends.

We’ll share the latest statistics as we answer some commonly asked questions about current travel and safety in Los Cabos.

How Easy is it to Travel to Los Cabos Right Now, and How Many People Are Doing So?

Let’s answer the second question first. There were 296,200 airport arrivals to Los Cabos in July 2021, an 11% increase (up 29,000 people) from July 2019, which was pre-Covid-19 of course. Of these arrivals, approximately 33% were domestic travelers (97,600), while the remainder (198,600) were international in origin, and overwhelming from the U.S. (over 99%). Interestingly, domestic travel was down 10.2% from July 2019, while international travel was up 25.6% from the same period.

Overall, these are incredibly positive numbers for Los Cabos as a destination, with significant growth in U.S. based tourism despite the ongoing health and safety challenges posed by Covid-19 and the Delta variant.

As to the first question, it’s still quite easy to travel to Los Cabs, as Mexico does not require negative Covid-19 tests for entry. However, travelers from the U.S. will need negative Antigen or PCR tests within 72-hours of their return flights home.

What is the Satisfaction Level of Tourists with the Los Cabos Experience?

Again, the numbers are very positive here: 74% of tourists in July 2021 rated their experience as “better than expected”, an uptick over both July 2019 and June 2021, suggesting that Los Cabos continues to improve in performance relative to expectation.

Only 1.2% of tourists in July 2021 perceived security as bad or regular, meaning the overwhelming majority not only were safe, but had a positive perception about the safety of Los Cabos in general.

This is an important indicator, since Los Cabos has been by far the most forward thinking of Mexican resort areas in stressing health and safety protocols during the Covid-19 pandemic.

These include the following actions:

  • Los Cabos with Care, an expansive and exhaustive health and safety protocol system that evaluates and strictly implements protocols throughout the transportation and hotel sectors, at restaurants and bars, at tour activities…basically, anywhere tourists are likely to visit.
  • Los Cabos has additionally achieved Sharecare health security verification, becoming the world’s first VERIFIED™ travel destination. This designation signifies that the majority of the hotels and resorts in the destination continue to ensure that their health protocols are in compliance with over 360 expert-validated global standards.
  • Los Cabos has also implemented a COVID-19 testing program to support visitors as they comply with testing requirements for their return flights. Antigen testing is available at all hotels, villas and timeshares, as well as the Los Cabos International Airport for emergency situations. The PCR test (as needed for select countries) is administered at specific locations, including hospitals and laboratories.

How Prevalent is Covid-19 in Los Cabos?

Baja California Sur, the state of which Los Cabos is a part, has – since the onset of the pandemic in March 2020 recorded 52,615 confirmed cases (data through August 19th of this year).

Although the incidence of Covid-19 in tourists is very rare, those visiting should exercise caution. Local residents are required to wear masks in public except in certain situations (eating, drinking, swimming, etc.). This policy does not apply to tourists, but visitors should be especially cautious if they encounter an establishment (shop, restaurant, etc.) where these mandates are not being strictly followed.

What Travel Trends Are Evident from Flights Scheduled to Los Cabos Over the Next Six Months (August 2021 – January 2022)?

Los Cabos should continue to see healthy growth in tourism from the U.S. There are 1.25 million seats scheduled to Los Cabos from the U.S. over the next 6 months, which is 52.5% more seats compared to the same period in 2019.

  • However, when comparing the seats scheduled for the next 6 months against the 2020 flight schedule (heavily pandemic influenced), the volume is 65.5% higher.
  • Chicago (+28.7%), Los Angeles (+82.7%), Phoenix (+40.3%), Houston (+41.9%), Dallas/Fort Worth (+33.5%), Denver (+153.5%), and Seattle (+125.5%) show the most significant airport increase in Los Cabos service versus 2019.
  • Los Angeles remains the top market in the U.S. for Los Cabos service (23% of the market), followed by Dallas (12%), Houston (11%), and Phoenix (8%).

Not surprisingly, all of these destinations are within three hours flight time to Los Cabos (see the attached map).

  • American, Alaska, Delta, and United Airlines are the most relevant airlines to the destination, representing 78% of scheduled service over the next six months.

Why Luxury Villas Are An Essential Part of Planning the Perfect Wedding in Cabo

Los Cabos has long been one of the world’s meccas for destination weddings and special events, thanks to its year-round sunshine, gorgeous beaches and stunning coastal scenery, not to mention the wealth of upscale accommodations and amenities.

If you’re looking for an unforgettable location to match your once-in-a-lifetime celebration, in other words, this is the place….as a huge number of happy couples can attest.

But you may be surprised to learn that the best venues for destination weddings aren’t found in luxury resorts in cape cities Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo, and the best accommodations – from honeymoon suites to rooms for the wedding party and VIP guests – they aren’t found at hotels and resorts either.

They’re found at luxury villas in Los Cabos.

Not only are luxury villas the not-so-secret weapon to planning the perfect wedding in Cabo, they also offer incredible value.

Here’s why…

Location, Location, Location

It’s the first law of real estate and the first law of destination weddings.

As we alluded to in the intro, for a life-changing event like a wedding, it’s important to find a setting that can match the grandeur of the occasion.

And trust us, nothing says grandeur and magnificence in Los Cabos like the luxury villas of Pedregal. This exclusive hillside enclave offers breathtaking elevated panoramas of downtown Cabo San Lucas, as well as horizon-stretching views of both the Sea of Cortez and Pacific Ocean (depending on the vantage).

Famed as the province of vacation homes for A-list movie stars and superstar athletes, Pedregal’s luxury villas are also the venue site of choice for discerning couples…particularly those who are planning weddings for 100 guests or less.

Why is this number important?

Because this is typically the maximum guest count that can be accommodated by the expansive terraces at larger luxury villas, where either the ceremony or reception (0r both!) may be held.

Value and Versatility

When you consider the fact that your wedding venue can also double as the lodging for the bride and groom, and the wedding party, then you begin to understand just how versatile luxury villas are, and just how much value they really offer.

Do not for a moment assume all luxury villas in Pedregal are the same, or that there aren’t other spectacular villas strategically situated throughout Los Cabos. But for general wedding planning purposes, just know that the best of the region’s villas are in Pedregal in Cabo San Lucas, and that the largest offer as many as 10 bedrooms, and can accommodate up to 20 or so guests.

Meaning there’s also room for the parents of the bride and groom, should this kind of arrangement be desired.

It should also be noted that in addition to the many onsite options (indoor and outdoor) for smaller events like rehearsal dinners or cocktail parties, the best of Cabo’s luxury villas also feature large professional quality kitchens for caterers to utilize.

Surprising as it may seem, luxury villas of this size are actually more affordable on a nightly, per person basis than most area luxury resorts. So there’s not only value in their dual purpose capability, but also value strictly as an accommodations option.

Did we mention the convenience factor? If you’re already at your wedding site, that means time saved in terms of travel, as well as convenience in preparation (hair and makeup) for the bride and bridal party, as well as for any costume changes during the course of the event.

Together Time

While the bride and groom are thinking of Los Cabos in terms of the wedding and honeymoon, everyone else is also thinking of it as a vacation. Just saying!

And luxury villas – which often boast VIP amenities like infinity pools, game rooms and home theatres – certainly play into this. But one of the most underrated aspects of the luxury villa experience is the together time it can provide for the wedding party.

The bridal party, for example, can enjoy massages and mani-pedis by the pool courtesy of local mobile spa services, while groomsmen can enjoy margaritas by the fire pit…when they’re not marlin fishing or playing one of the many local championship-level golf courses, that is.

For the bride and groom, occupants of the master suite, this amounts to a pre-honeymoon, and an opportunity to spend time with those that are most important to them before the biggest day of their lives.

That’s something you can’t put on a price on. Consider it a hidden value of the luxury villa when you’re stacking up all the other values, and all the reasons why you should definitely rent one for your destination Cabo wedding.

Bisbee’s Starts 2021 Fishing Tournament Season with a Bang as East Cape Offshore Breaks More Records

Last year, Bisbee’s trio of big-game fishing tournaments in Los Cabos smashed records for participations and payouts, with the East Cape Offshore, Los Cabos Offshore, and Black and Blue tournaments combining to offer an astounding prize pool of over 7.2 million dollars.

So successful was the 2020 fishing season for Bisbee’s that expectations have been “off the charts” high for 2021. Could Bisbee’s break its records all over again?

If last weekend’s East Cape Offshore is any indication, the answer is a resounding yes!

The ECO tournament annually kicks off the season for Bisbee’s in early August, setting the tone for the two October events to follow. Last year, a record 72 teams competed for a record 1.1 million dollars, the first time the tournament had ever crossed the million-dollar threshold.

This year, 96 teams competed in the event, which is hosted by the Hotel Buena Vista Beach Resort in the Los Cabos municipality’s gorgeous East Cape region. To say that smashed the year-old record is an understatement. It obliterated it, just as this year’s payout of $1,582,975 obliterated the previous mark…topping it by nearly half a million dollars.

Another way to look at it…the 2021 payouts increased by over 42% in a single year!

“The top two 2021 winning teams received more money than the total amount received by all the winners in the 2020 event,” said Tournament Director Wayne Bisbee. Last year’s ECO payouts, as mentioned, totaled 1,1 million. This year’s largest two payouts were $790,712 for first place, and $431,800 for a roll-over jackpot, for a total of $1.22 million.

No, no one topped last year’s ECO record 704 lb. blue marlin, but the fishing certainly contributed to the excitement surrounding the event. And to be fair, Team Tiger Spirit came close. Their 597 lb. black marlin garnered first place, and was the second largest qualifying fish caught in the 22-year history of the event!

The upshot? If you haven’t entered this year’s Los Cabos Offshore or Black and Blue tournaments yet, what are you waiting for?

Here’s what to expect from the remaining two Bisbee’s events in 2021, including info on entry fees and previous payouts.

Bisbee’s Los Cabos Offshore – October 14th to 17th

Commonly known as “Little Bisbee’s,” to differentiate it from the “Big Bisbee’s” Black & Blue marlin fishing tournament that also takes place each October in Los Cabos, the Los Cabos Offshore dates back to 2002, and is considered a more laid-back, charity focused endeavor than the Black & Blue.

Cash prizes are awarded to the teams with the three biggest qualifying fish in the game and billfish categories at the LCO, and large amounts of fish/meals are always donated to local families in need.

Base entry for teams is $1,500 U.S., with $22,500 necessary for “across the board” entry in all jackpots and challenges. In 2020, the Los Cabos Offshore topped the million-dollar mark for the second year in a row, with prize pools and jackpots totaling $1,457,000 for the 128 participating teams.

Bisbee’s Black & Blue – October 19th to 23rd

Oft billed as “The World’s Richest Fishing Tournament,” thanks to its million dollar payouts, this marlin fishing tournament originally premiered in 1981, and remains to this day the highest profile annual event in Los Cabos. Base entry for this millionaire maker is $5,000 U.S. per team, and requires a $71,500 U.S. outlay across all categories, jackpots and challenges. Prizes are awarded for the top five catches of black and blue marlin, assuming they meet the minimum standards (300 lbs.).

A robust 127 teams comprising 883 fishermen and women competed in the Black and Blue in 2020, as the B&B smashed its own record with $4,649,350 in total prize money. That bested the former mark, set in 2006, of $4,165,960; which for well over a decade had been the largest payout in sport fishing history.

But as we just saw with the 2021 ECO, history is now being made every time Bisbee’s holds a tournament.

Which is why, of course, Cabo San Lucas is the place to be this October. Where else can you get paid this much to go fishing and party?

Summer Golf Spotlight: Top Courses in Cabo San Lucas

We’ve said it before. We’ll say it again. Los Cabos is one of the most remarkable golf destinations on Earth.

As of 2021, the local portfolio numbers 18 beautiful courses – from Cabo San Lucas, San Jose del Cabo and their connective Tourist Corridor to the East Cape and beyond – almost all of them world-class, and all built within the last 35 years. Most boast powerhouse pedigrees, with designs from legendary names like Jack Nicklaus, Tiger Woods and Greg Norman. All showcase a spectacular blend of ocean, desert and mountain vistas.

Summer is traditionally golf season, and although such seasonal distinctions make little difference in always sunny Los Cabos, now is the time when many golfers turn their thoughts to destination golf trips.

So with that in mind, we’ll be previewing all of the local courses this summer, including the latest updates on specials and discounts.

Our first installment covered San Jose del Cabo. For our second, we’ll be looking at the stunning collection of courses in sister city Cabo San Lucas.

Golf in Cabo San Lucas

Five of the 18 golf courses in Los Cabos can be found in Cabo San Lucas, all of which are found on the Pacific Coast near the northern outskirts of the city…and nearly all of which are breathtakingly beautiful.

During the 1990s, when the golf boom in Los Cabos began, all the great courses were built along the 20-mile tourist corridor which connects Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo. Since Davis Love III’s Diamante Dunes course premiered in 2009, Cabo San Lucas has been ground zero for the region’s best new courses.

Note: These five courses are all part of resort and residential developments, with restricted tee time access for guests, owners and renters. To find out more about vacation rentals and how to play these courses, email us at info@loscabosvillas.com.

The Dunes Course at Diamante

In Los Cabos, only Nicklaus landmark Ocean Course at Cabo del Sol (now the Cove Club) has achieved the same sort of acclaim as Davis Love III’s Dunes Course at Diamante; and even that falls short when it comes to the opinion of the sport’s premier tastemakers. Voted top new international course in 2010, Golf Magazine declared the Dunes Course the 52nd best course in the world in 2013, the highest ranking ever achieved by a Los Cabos golf course at that point. It rose even higher on the same list in 2016, ascending to 36th. This lavish praise has elevated the 7,300-yard Dunes Course to “must-play” status for destination golfers, and the links style coastal layout does not disappoint.

El Cardonal at Diamante

“The site is incredible,” Tiger Woods said of his first ever completed golf course design, noting: “I set up the golf strategy to make golfers think and make choices. Regardless of your handicap, there are going to be different ways to play every hole. Angles of approach are going to be very important and will dictate the type of shots you should consider. I love this kind of golf.” So too have the many destination golfers to play El Cardonal since the course opened at Diamante in 2014. Envisioned by its creator as the kind of “Old California” layout he grew up playing as a kid, El Cardonal is long (7,363 yards) but fair, with plenty of gorgeous views.

The Oasis Short Course at Diamante

Tiger Woods returned to Los Cabos in 2016 to sculpt this modest but picturesque par-3 layout at Diamante. Only 12 holes in length, Oasis is a bit like an amuse bouche – a bite-sized hors d’ouevre – for Diamante visitors, who can hone their games before tackling the more difficult Dunes or El Cardonal courses. Although short in terms of length (1,124 yards), the course weaves through lush landscaping that includes an 8-acre lake and over 400 palm trees.

Quivira Golf Club

Jack Nicklaus triumphed again with this magnificent coastal layout at Quivira, a resort and residential development from Pueblo Bonito brand founder Ernesto Coppel Kelly. The 7,139-yard tour de force was voted the world’s best new international course in 2015 by Golf Magazine, and has since earned additional acclaim, including being named one of the W0rld’s 100 Best by Golf Digest. All 18 holes offer ocean views, and seven holes hug the coast, including the remarkable par-4 fifth, which is perched on the edge of sheer cliffside and offers opportunities to try to drive the green (or send your ball straight to Davey Jones’ locker). The 19th hole here also happens to be the best steakhouse in town.

Rancho San Lucas

The most recent addition to the Los Cabos golf landscape, the 7,210-yard Greg Norman designed Rancho San Lucas golf course premiered in February 2020 as the centerpiece of an 834-acre resort and residential development spearheaded by the Solmar Group, the only Los Cabos based resort brand, with seven local hotels and resorts. Norman’s second local layout is challenging but playable for golfers of all skill levels, with wide fairways and memorable touches like British Isles style bunkering. The most memorable feature, however, is the par-3 17th hole, which showcases an island green reminiscent of TPC Sawgrass, but with better views; including a surrounding lake as well as Pacific Ocean backdrops. As at nearby Quivira, ocean views are visible from all 18 holes.

Diving into Los Cabos: 3 Amazing Snorkel and Dive Destinations to Explore this Summer

There are many compelling reasons to visit Los Cabos. Baja California Sur’s southernmost municipality offers over 100 miles of gorgeous coastline filled with pristine beaches, plus year-round sunshine and luxury accommodations galore, from brand-name resorts to beachfront vacation rentals.

But what truly sets the region apart is its incredible array of outdoor adventures. Whether its hiking, biking, fishing, diving, surfing, kayaking, stand-up paddle boarding, or any other outdoor activity under the sun, the conditions in and around cape cities Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo are world-class.

And although the sunshine may be year-round, there are very definitely peak seasons for some of these outdoor pursuits. In the case of diving, for example, summer (and especially late summer) is absolutely the best time to dive in, thanks to warmer water temperatures and increased visibility.

So yes, now is the best time to take that long-awaited Los Cabos scuba diving trip, and as many snorkel and dive aficionados may already know, there are some incredible sites to dive into.

Here are three of our favorites, the final two of which should be on the bucket list of any serious diver…

Land’s End

Land’s End is home to some of the most famed landmarks in Los Cabos, including Lover’s Beach, the Window to the Pacific, the Pirate’s Cave, La Lobera (the sea lion colony), and El Arco; the latter a naturally occurring arch formed from 80-million-year-old granite.

But as amazing as it above the waterline, Land’s End is even more remarkable below it.

There’s a profusion of great dive sites at Land’s End, the most notable of which are Pelican Rock, Neptune’s Finger, and The Point. Each site boasts unique features, from the degree of depth to the quality and quantity of marine life. Pelican Rock, for example, is famed for its sand falls and profusion of tropical fish; Neptune’s Finger showcases coral, sponges, and sea fans; while diving The Point offers opportunities to see sea turtles, sea lions, moray eels, and even the occasional octopus.

Virtually every local dive shop offers trips to Land’s End, and many offer night diving opportunities.

Cabo Pulmo National Park

Cabo Pulmo, a small village on the East Cape of Los Cabos, is the site of one of the world’s great ecological sustainability stories. Twenty-five years ago the offshore waters were badly overfished so residents banded together and were able to able to have them declared a federally protected national park (in 2005, it was also declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site). The rebound since has been so spectacular that this aquatic sanctuary now boasts the highest concentration of sea life in the entire Sea of Cortez.

But that’s not the only reason Cabo Pulmo is a mecca for snorkelers and scuba divers. The marine park is also home to one of the most breathtaking living coral reefs in the Western Hemisphere, with eight fingers of vividly colorful coral. The profusion of life is so intense, meanwhile, that schools of fish sometimes seem to blot out the little sun that filters beneath the surface.

From dolphins and sea turtles to leaping mobula rays, Cabo Pulmo is a scuba diver’s dream come true.

Revillagigedos Archipelago

Land’s End and Cabo Pulmo are easily reachable from any resort or rental villa in Los Cabos. Not so the Revillagigedos Archipelago, which is some 240 miles southwest of Cabo San Lucas. Like Cabo Pulmo, this is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, but reaching the archipelago’s group of small uninhabited islands requires a week-long, round-trip voyage aboard the Solmar V, a 112’ liveaboard dive vessel. It’s a commitment few tourists are willing to undertake.

For hard core divers, however, this is the adventure of a lifetime. The Revillagigedos (pronounced Reh-bee-uh-hee-hay-dos) are sometimes referred to as the Galapagos of Mexico, with islands so remote and offshore waters so teeming with large pelagic species that divers are treated to mind-blowing spectacles of enormous sea turtles, schools of great white sharks, orcas and humpback whales, and hundreds of giant manta rays swimming together.

The waters off Socorro and Guadalupe Islands are ground zero for this bucket list adventure. We’d advise starting at Land’s End and working your way up (or in this case, down). For beginners, almost all local dive shops offer both training and PADI certifications.

Summer Golf Spotlight: Top Courses in San Jose del Cabo

Our first installment starts in San Jose del Cabo.

Golf in San Jose del Cabo

Four of the 18 golf courses in Los Cabos can be found in or just outside San Jose del Cabo, the more traditional and sophisticated of the cape cities. San Jose del Cabo is known as the seat of municipal government, as a cultural mecca and fine dining capital, with a recorded history that dates back more than 400 years. Interestingly enough, a large percentage of the public golf courses in Los Cabos are located in San Jose del Cabo.

For context, there are basically three classifications for golf in Los Cabos: public, private, and playable with some restrictions. The latter category basically refers to courses where tee times are only available to guests at select resorts or residential communities.

Now that we’ve explained it, we should say such complexities don’t exist for the four courses profiled below. They’re public and open to everyone.

Puerto Los Cabos

For 10 years, the luxury Puerto Los Cabos development just outside San Jose del Cabo hosted the world’s only collaborative design between champions turned designers Jack Nicklaus and Greg Norman. The plan all along was for the two nine-hole efforts to be expanded into their own 18-hole layouts. Norman has yet to design the second nine for his course–he’s been too busy with Rancho San Lucas, his drop-dead design on the Pacific Coast of Cabo San Lucas–but Nicklaus did return to finish his original conception, with the now 18-hole course debuting in 2018. So for now, anyway, golfers have access to 27 beautiful holes, including the most recent nine unveiled by Nicklaus. Norman’s par-3 6th hole, however, remains the most memorable hole, with an elevated (very elevated!) tee box that shows off miles of magnificent coastline.

Club Campestre

Club Campestre, one of six Jack Nicklaus designs in Los Cabos, opened in 2007 in the heart of San Jose del Cabo, with a location not far from the Los Cabos International Airport. But although Club Campestre is the first course likely to be glimpsed by new arrivals, the only way to truly get to know this 6,966-yard gem is by playing it. The course features many signature Nicklaus elements, from abundant bunkering and sloping fairways to undulating multi-tiered greens. Yes, this course has teeth. It also, of course, has spectacular views…not only of the Sea of Cortez, but the foothills of the Sierra de La Laguna mountain range that runs up the center of the peninsula between Los Cabos and La Paz. As at many Los Cabos courses, the fairways are covered with seashore papsalum, a disease resistant tropical grass that fares well in local conditions.

At $160 per round ($120 twilight), Club Campestre is the most affordable of the three courses Los Cabos courses managed by Questro Golf (Cabo Real and Puerto Los Cabos being the others). Three and five round passes are available at discounted rates and allow golfers to play all of Questro’s offerings.

Palmilla Golf Club

Palmilla was the first truly ambitious golf course in Los Cabos, and the first of Nicklaus’ many memorable designs in the area. It was Southern California real estate magnate Don Koll, who owned the Palmilla Resort at the time (before it acquired the One&Only imprimatur), who convinced the Golden Bear to take on the challenge. And boy did he! Like Puerto Los Cabos, Palmilla Golf Club offers 27 holes of world-class golf, allowing destination golfers to pick and choose their favorite 18-hole experience from the 9-hole layouts they like best. Nicklaus completed the Mountain and Arroyo portions in 1992, returning to add the stunning 9-hole Ocean layout in 1999.

Vidanta Golf Los Cabos

The first golf course in Los Cabos was built in 1987 by a Mexico City architect named Mario Schjetnan as a modest 9-hole municipal course. And so it largely remains, although management has shifted over the years, first to the Mayan Palace resorts group and later to Vidanta, which manages resorts and golf courses throughout Mexico. This is the one course in Los Cabos for which no pretensions can be made. It’s not world-class. It’s only 9 holes and 3,153-yards long. Yet, residents and tourists alike continue to enjoy its easygoing charms, as well as its very affordable rates.

Summer Spotlight: June Events in Los Cabos

June ushers in the summer season in Los Cabos, which means not just warmer temperatures, but a new season and new events for some of the region’s most iconic activities.

Fishing tournament season, for examples, begins in June each year when conditions become better for signature local catches like blue and black marlin. The most famous local tournament, Bisbee’s Black and Blue, doesn’t take place until October, but June gets the season started right with the return of the Pelagic Triple Crown of Fishing, a major event that offers an unforgettable experience on the water, as well as upwards of $350,000 in prize money.

The Stars and Stripes Tournament also returns, but this is more than just a fishing competition. It’s more like a complete lifestyle experience, with fishing, golf, food, music, and much, much more. And the best part is, it’s all for a very good cause.

But just as June ushers in a new season of events, it also says farewell to another…at least for a few months. That would be Art Walk in San Jose del Cabo, the weekly celebration of art and culture that transforms the downtown heart of the city – from the Distrito del Arte to Plaza Mijares – every Thursday evening from November through June.

So there’s definitely plenty to do this summer…and if these events don’t keep you busy, there’s always the beaches!

Art Walk in San Jose del Cabo – June 3, 10, 17, 24

The historic Distrito del Arte in San Jose del Cabo takes center stage each Thursday evening during high tourist season–November through June–when residents and visitors alike are invited to stroll its cobblestone streets and peruse the many eclectic fine arts galleries. Art Walk hours are 5 to 9 p.m., when the neighborhood comes alive with wine, cheese and guided tours, as well as colorful street artists and strolling mariachis. After another successful season, Thursdays in June will be the last chance to enjoy Art Walk until it returns for a new season in November 2021.

Viva La Plaza in Cabo San Lucas – June 4, 11, 18, 25

Art Walk may be the premier weekly cultural event in San Jose del Cabo, but Viva La Plaza holds that distinction in Cabo San Lucas. Held each Friday evening from 6 to 10 p.m. in the Land’s End city’s principal plaza – Plaza Amelia Wilkes – this weekly showcase lures visitors with regional paintings and handicrafts, artfully arrayed around the recently renovated square’s charming central gazebo. Live music and traditional Mexican dance are also big draws, as are food stalls featuring tasty Mexican favorites.

Pelagic Triple Crown of Fishing Tournament – June 10 – 12

The 2021 fishing season in Los Cabos starts with the estimated $350,000 on the line for the 7th Triple Crown of Fishing Tournament in Cabo San Lucas. Over 170 billfish were documented at the last tournament in 2019, with plenty of gamefish taken too, including a tournament high 33.3 lb. wahoo and a 22.8 lb. dorado (mahi mahi). Team Tejas took home the highest payout, earning $130,320 of the $300,000 in total prize money, after catching and releasing a whopping 27 striped marlin during the two days of official fishing. So those are numbers to beat in 2021, and the rules remain the same. There are two categories: billfish and gamefish. Species eligible in the former category include blue, black and striped marlin, as well as sailfish, spearfish and swordfish. Of these, blue marlin, black marlin and swordfish are the most valuable, counting 300 points per properly documented catch and release. Striped marlin, sailfish and spearfish count 100 points each. Documentation is done via video evidence and radio verification.

Stars and Stripes Golf and Fishing Tournament – June 23 – 27

During the 20+ years of its existence, the annual Stars and Stripes’ golf and fishing tournament has raised over 36 million dollars for youth focused charities. But it’s not simply a tournament or a charity benefit…more like a complete lifestyle experience. Participants stay at the luxurious Hilton Los Cabos; go big-game sportfishing for dorado, wahoo, tuna, sailfish, swordfish, and black, blue and striped marlin; play golf at some of the world’s best golf courses; and enjoy spectacular live entertainment nightly. This year’s headliners, for instance, are reggae legend Ziggy Marley and acclaimed singer-songwriter Melissa Etheridge.

Mastering the Laid-Back Los Cabos Lifestyle: A Guide to Getting the Most Out of Your Summer Vacation in Paradise (2021 Edition)

Los Cabos offers incredible beaches and gorgeous ocean views galore, but over the years cape cities Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo

– as well as the East Cape – have built on their natural advantages to become some of the world’s best destinations for what might be termed the “luxury laid-back lifestyle.”

What are the key elements of this lifestyle? The best example has been set by an annual summer event called the Stars & Stripes Tournament, a fun, upscale affair that pairs golf, fishing, beach outings, pampering spa days and great music from top-line talent (this year’s headliner is Ziggy Marley) to create what amounts to the complete Los Cabos lifestyle experience. The 2021 event is scheduled for June 23rd t0 27th, and it’s definitely worth attending, especially if you’d like to help increase the 36 million dollars the tournament has raised since 1997 for child-focused charities.

But the truth is, you don’t need to attend any events to master the Los Cabos lifestyle during your summer vacation. All you need is this brief guide, which offers tips on the best beaches, fishing, golf, music, spas and vacation rentals the area has to offer:

Golf

Los Cabos is home to an astounding 18 golf courses, including world-class layouts from big-name designers like Jack Nicklaus, Tiger Woods, Greg Norman, Fred Couples and Davis Love III. Norman’s course at Rancho San Lucas is the newest to open, followed by Robert Trent Jones Jr’s Costa Palmas Golf Club on the Los Cabos municipality’s East Cape. But with the exception of Vidanta, whose 9-hole layout is a throwback to an earlier era, the remaining 17 courses all offer an incredible destination experience, with world-class golf and magnificent views of ocean, beaches, mountains and desert.

Fishing

Cabo San Lucas as a tourist destination was built on big-game sport fishing, and although conditions are good for his premier local attraction on a year-round basis, summer and fall are the best seasons to get your hooks into massive billfish like blue and black marlin. That’s why the big-money tournaments are all scheduled during these two seasons. Don’t want to participate in a tournament? Just charter a boat for a day…or half-day. Virtually every local restaurant offers “you hook it, we cook it” specials and will prepare your catch any way you like it.

Music

Sammy Hagar is probably the person most closely associated with Los Cabos, and the club he opened in Cabo San Lucas with his then Van Halen bandmates back in 1990 – Cabo Wabo Cantina – remains the top spot locally for live rock ‘n roll. Live music representing many genres may be found at sites throughout Los Cabos, however, from beach bars and piano bars to late night clubs and luxury resorts. You won’t find a lot of headliners here, but a bit of Spanish guitar while you’re sipping a margarita in a hammock is often the only live entertainment you really need…or want.

Spas

Since the 1990s, Los Cabos has been transitioning from its original tourism incarnation at a laid-back beach and fishing spot to a more upscale, luxury-oriented destination. The two symbols of this transformation are golf courses and pampering spas. Every resort worth its salt in Los Cabos boasts a pampering spa, and downtown Cabo San Lucas features a day spa on just about every downtown block. Don’t fight it. Give in to the hour-long massages in a variety of styles, the romantic couples treatments, and accept that your life is about to become a whole lot more relaxed.

Vacation Rentals

Whether you’re traveling with that special someone, with your kids, with extended family, or with a group of friends for a destination golf or fishing trip, vacation rentals in Los Cabos offer far more options than resorts in terms of finding the right fit. For a couple, perhaps an ocean view penthouse condo is the perfect choice. For a family or larger groups, perhaps a beachfront home is preferred, or a luxury villa with commanding Land’s End views. With vacation rentals, it’s not just the size that’s optional, but the amenities and the location…which can be tailored to your personal vacation plans. Which is why discerning travelers always opt for luxury villas or vacation rentals over resorts. The privacy is nice, too.

Beaches

Los Cabos has more blue flag beaches (22) than any other destination in Mexico, and blue flags are notable for ensuring a host of services and amenities like bathrooms, handicap access, informative signs, etc. But if all you’re looking for is a wide swath of golden sand, the opportunities then become endless. That’s the way it goes when you have more than 100 miles of coastline – as the Los Cabos municipality does – and the sun shines more than 350 days a year. Enjoy it! Pack a towel, lather on a little sunblock, and feel the Cabo vibes wash over you. You’ve found the perfect summer getaway spot.

Endless Summer, Cabo Style: 3 Tips for Planning Summer Surf Vacations in Los Cabos

Surfers were among the first to discover the charms of Los Cabos, traveling up and down the Baja California coast in search of pristine beaches
and epic waves at a time when tourism in the region was still in its infancy. Over the years, the beautiful beaches of Los Cabos and their spectacular surf breaks – of which, by the way, there are a great many – have continued to exert a fascination for surfers, and the Baja surf trip has become a sort of rite of passage for each succeeding generation.

But, naturally, as one ages creature comforts become increasingly important, and those who once thought little of a living out of a van with a few friends now have families of their own, and enough financial wherewithal to afford some of the finer things in life.

It is for this group – those who have matured into a more discerning variety of Los Cabos surf vacation– that we present our summer surfing guide for 2021, with 3 of our favorite tips on getting the most out of the destination Los Cabos experience.

Surfing is still the focus, of course, but wining and dining opportunities also matter, as do great accommodations and maximizing fun for everyone…whether it be for spouses/significant others, or for your kids.

Summer Means the Sea of Cortez

Anyone even vaguely familiar with the Los Cabos surf scene knows that it shifts coasts according to the season. Pacific Ocean side surf breaks rule during winter months, while the Sea of Cortez side breaks takes center stage during the summer.

The reason for this old maxim is simple. The Pacific side breaks are actually good year-round, but the surfing on the Sea of Cortez side is never better than during summertime, when seasonal storms send southeasterly swells barreling – emphasis on barrels – towards the beaches of San Jose del Cabo and Los Cabos’ gorgeous, picturesque East Cape.

So even if you love the Pacific side surf at Cerritos, San Pedrito and La Pastora, save those pleasures for vacations during winter, spring and autumn. Summer is custom made for surfing San Jose del Cabo spots like Zippers and Acapulquito, corridor meccas like Monuments, and East Cape favorites like Shipwrecks and Nine Palms. That’s when you’ll catch these breaks at their best….and their best is very, very good.

Forget Resorts, Find Nearby Vacation Rentals

Resorts proliferate along the Los Cabos coastline, and as it happens there are even a few surf-themed properties that have opened in recent years. But when it comes to Los Cabo surf vacations, let’s be honest: rentals are the best option…and it’s not even really close.

Why? Villas and vacation rentals allow you to customize every single aspect of your vacation experience, from a location near your surf spot of choice to your ideal budget, décor style and amenities.

Looking for a certain number of bedrooms to accommodate friends or family? No problem. Looking for a place where the décor reflects your sensibilities, whether it’s bohemian chic or upscale casual? No worries. Looking for a place with a home theater, or an infinity pool, or a terrace perfect for massages or private chef style cookouts? Easy peasy.

Not only are rentals private, convenient, and often surprisingly affordable, they also let you tailor your vacation to your own tastes in a way resorts simply cannot.

How to Maximize Fun for Everyone

Even if your surf skills are expert, and thus ready for surfing Zippers or The Rock at Costa Azul, or even that tricky left-hand reef break at Monuments…that doesn’t mean your significant other or kids are on the same level.

Beginner breaks at Costa Azul and Acapulquito may be more their speed. Or maybe they don’t want to surf at all, in which case you’ll want to target the surf breaks closest to the attractions they do like…be it hiking, biking, fishing, snorkeling or diving, or the many other outdoor activities for which Los Cabos offers world-class conditions.

The beauty of Los Cabos is none of these things are mutually exclusive. You may want to surf East Cape breaks, for instance, so others are close to the world-class diving at Cabo Pulmo National Park. Or prioritize San Jose del Cabo, which not only offers world-class surfing, but great shopping and dining. But if you put a little thought into it beforehand, everybody’s going to be happy.

And isn’t that what the best vacations are always about? That and surfing, of course.
