The Best November Events in Los Cabos

November traditionally signals the onset of cooler temperatures in Los Cabos, but like October is a red hot month in terms of regional events. Movie star appearances and red-carpet glamor accompany the return of the always highly anticipated Los Cabos International Film Festival, but the month’s biggest headliners are registered in the region’s many high-profile sporting events.

WON Los Cabos Tuna Jackpot Tournament – Nov. 1 – 4

The Western Outdoor News has a long history with Los Cabos, dating back to the 1950s, when Baja columnist Ray Cannon’s rave fishing reviews helped put the area on the destination travel map. The WON Tuna Jackpot is one of the larger fishing tournaments in Cabo San Lucas, a staple of the autumn calendar that follows hard on the heels of the Los Cabos Billfish and Bisbee’s Los Cabos Offshore and Black & Blue Tournaments. Last year’s event, the 18th edition, set several records – including the most teams (168, 25 more than the previous year), and the largest payout ($749,000 to five teams) – and even bigger things are expected this year.

Jim Flick Invitational Golf Tournament at Cabo del Sol – Nov. 7 – 12

Cabo del Sol’s spectacular Ocean and Desert Courses in Los Cabos take center stage for this pro-am tournament, with professionals competing for $100,000 over 72-holes of stroke play, and foursomes (featuring one professional and three amateurs) battling in handicap-adjusted best ball contests to win a 5-day trip to the birthplace of golf, St. Andrews in Scotland. Formerly the TaylorMade Invitational, the tournament was renamed in 2016 in honor of the late Jim Flick, a PGA Professional and golf instructor for more than 50 years. Flick taught golf in 23 countries and worked with pros like Tom Lehman and Jack Nicklaus, with whom he founded the Nicklaus-Flick Golf Schools.

Los Cabos International Film Festival – Nov. 8 – 12

Latin America’s premier film festival returns for its 6th edition on Nov. 8, with an opening night red-carpet gala and screening at the Pabellón Cultural de la República in Cabo San Lucas. The celebrity and paparazzi studded galas receive much of the attention, but the heart of the festival consists of curated screenings at Cinemex Theaters at Puerto Paraíso, and behind the scenes conferences and programs designed to promote mutually beneficial collaborations between the North American film industries. Thus, the LCIFF’s long-running tagline: “Come See What the Neighbors Are Doing.”

Ironman Los Cabos Triathlon – Nov. 12

Los Cabos became the second Mexican site (after Cozumel) to welcome an Ironman series triathlon event, when it first hosted the rigorous competition back in 2013. It’s now a yearly rite of passage for local fitness fanatics, posing a rigorous yet picturesque challenge:  swim 2.4 miles in the gorgeous cove off Playa Palmilla, cycle for 112 more along the coastal corridor, and then manage a marathon-length 26.2 mile run that finishes in front of historic City Hall in San Jose del Cabo. Prize money is on the line, as well as coveted qualifying spots in the annual Ironman World Championship. A 70.3, or half-triathlon, has been added for those with only slightly superior conditioning.

Extreme Sailing Series – Nov. 30 – Dec. 3

The Extreme Sailing Series brings together the world’s best sailors – from America’s Cup competitors and their billionaire backers to Olympic heroes and around-the-world soloists – and equalizes them by requiring they sail the same kind of boat: a lightning fast GC32 class catamaran capable of speeds up to 46 knots per hour. Cabo San Lucas is the final stop on the 2017 tour, the final test of champions. Locals and visitors alike can watch the championship action from shore, as the ESS is a leading proponent of stadium racing, where all the sailing takes place within view of land (or in the case of Cabo San Lucas, Land’s End).

Tiger Woods Opens Second Golf Course in Cabo San Lucas

The first golf course design from legendary player Tiger Woods was El Cardonal in Cabo San Lucas, an old-school, So-Cal parkland style course that opened at Diamante in 2014.  A few weeks ago, the 14-time major champion returned to the private 1,500 acre Pacific Coast luxury community, this time for the unveiling of his new par 3, dubbed Oasis Short Course.

Woods and former baseball star Roger Clemens were both on hand for the inaugural round at Oasis, along with a select group of Diamante members, local VIPs, and top Mexican golfers.

Distances at the truncated 12-hole layout range from 41 to 143 yards, and thus are perfect for young golfers, as well as recreational players looking for a more relaxed experience than that offered by some of the region’s more difficult courses; including The Dunes, the Davis Love III designed links course that put Diamante on the map in 2009.

“I learned how to play on a short par 3 course in Long Beach, California,” Woods said while explaining his rationale for the design at Oasis. “When I was a kid, a 100-yard hole for me at Heartwell Golf Course was a driver and a 7-iron, so I can relate to the challenges faced by younger players.”

Oasis is the 15th golf course to open in Los Cabos. Three of these, or a whopping 20 percent, are currently ranked among the 100 best in the world by Golf Digest:  The Dunes Course; Tom Fazio’s gorgeous layout at Querencia, and Jack Nicklaus’ Ocean Course at Cabo del Sol, which the “Golden Bear” once referred to as “the best golf property I’ve ever seen.”

No wonder the region was recently declared the Latin American and Caribbean Golf Destination of the Year for 2017 by the IAGTO (the International Association of Golf Tour Operators).

Incredibly, even more world-class courses are in the works for Baja California Sur’s premier getaway destination. New layouts from major champions Greg Norman and Fred Couples are currently in development, and Woods and Diamante are in the planning stages for a third course at the exclusive coastal property.

Like The Dunes and El Cardonal, the Oasis Short Course is open only to Diamante members and their guests.

Lord of the Wind – Los Cabos – East Cape Event

As you probably know, the Los Cabos region is well known for its wide array of water sports and other Lord of the Windsoutdoor activities. No matter what activity you’re interested in, you’re sure to be able to find it in Cabo. Kiteboarding is one sport that has been gaining popularity annually for several years at this point. If you have an interest in kiteboarding, you’ll definitely want to keep reading today’s post.

Although the 2015 Lord of the Wind kiteboarding competition has come and gone (it was held on January 15-18), it is never too early to begin planning to attend next year’s big event. Lord of the Wind was founded 5 years ago and, in that relatively short time, has become one of the preeminent kiteboarding events anywhere in the world. The Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo region is the perfect location for lovers of kiteboarding. The sun, sand, and surf all work together to create the ideal atmosphere for these laid back people.

If you are interested in either volunteering at, attending or competing in the 2016 Lord of the Wind tournament, now is the time to start preparing. Visit www.LordoftheWindBaja.com  for more information. This competition thrives because of people just like you! The Rotary Club of Los Barriles Cabo Este hosts this competition; contact them with any questions you may have that aren’t addressed on the Lord of the Wind webpage. Preparation is already underway for next year, so if you have comments or suggestions, don’t wait to get in-touch.

Early planning can help you have the best possible experience next January in Los Cabos. The Los Cabos Villas staff would be thrilled to help you start looking for the right accommodations for your stay. Since there is quite a bit of time before the event, we will be able to work with you to find your dream condominium or vacation house. You will not have to settle for anything less than the best for your Los Cabos Vacation holiday!

Living in Los Cabos: Fighting For Our Lives

Living in Los Cabos: Fighting For Our Lives

By Carol Billups

Living in Los Cabos: Fighting For Our Lives

I just bumper-stickered my car; I think that’s only the second time so you know it’s got to be a big issue. And it is.

For some time now environmentalists in the area have been warning against a move by a Canadian company, Vista Gold, to destroy the Sierra Laguna biosphere by putting in an open pit mine of approximately 800 hectares (about 1,800 acres) just outside the neighboring town of Todos Santos. In addition to the environmental damage of simply ripping open a mountain they will be using arsenic to leach the gold, which may find its way into the water supply for all of our area. If that weren’t stupid enough, the area is already a biological preserve and the nearest town was declared a “Pueblo Magico” only a few years ago. Obviously someone used to think they were worth saving.

Pictures are worth a thousand words: you can see plenty at the website http://www.bajasurenpeligro.com/ . The YouTube film they show is in Spanish, but the meaning is clear enough. First what the area looks like today and some of the animals and plants (many endangered, I believe) who call it home; then photos of similar mines in operation elsewhere. You can sign up to be against the mine (contra la mina) on the site as well.

Now here’s the grossest stupidity of the whole disaster: in 2008 they estimated that over the 10 year span of time the mine would be in operation the value of the gold produced would be about $200 million, or about $20 million per year. Which is certainly less than the area produces with tourism, with ecotourism being our fastest growing sector!!! And might I add that the tourist income stays in Mexico; the income from the gold mine will go to Canadian investors. The number of years it would take for the environment to recover is unknown, but the old gold mining area of El Trifuno in our state is still barren over 150 years after that mine was closed. Stupid!

This morning Canaco, a sort of Chamber of Commerce, held a big meeting trying to rally opposition to the mine among the business community. According to reports our Congress is strongly opposed, it’s only a matter of if they can work quickly enough to block the mine. Our administrator, who attended the meeting, reports that there was a forceful movement by the attendees to hold a mass demonstration against the mine just in case any of our government officials are tempted to move forward with the permits. Vista Gold’s website, last I visited, reported that they had all permits in place. Who knows?
