5 Reasons Your New Year’s Resolution for 2022 Should Be to Spend More Time in Los Cabos

It’s that time of year again: resolution season. Each year in January, as soon as the last New Year’s Eve firework has exploded and the last Champagne bottle has been popped, people’s thoughts inevitably begin turning to New Year’s resolutions.

Often such resolutions are aspirational ideas like “join a gym,” a perfectly understandable sentiment, by the way, after the many dinners and celebrations that traditionally characterize the holiday season. Of course resolutions should be geared towards making our lives healthier and more enjoyable, and rededicating ourselves in that direction is always salutary.

But resolutions can also be a bit more ambitious, a bit bolder than simply deciding to work out a few more times each week. Resolutions are in essence a way to refocus on the big picture. What are the things we care most about? What are the things that bring the greatest amount of joy into our lives? Where do we feel the happiest?

The latter question actually opens up an entire new field when it comes to New Year’s resolutions. Instead of “join a gym” it could be “spend more time on the beach”; or, more specifically, “spend more time in Los Cabos.”

With its year-round sunshine and diverse geography – ocean, beach, desert and mountains – Los Cabos offers world-class conditions for virtually every outdoor sport imaginable. So if getting in shape is your focus, there are few better places on Earth to do so.

But the wonder of cape cities Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo, and the reason this is such a magical idea for a resolution, is that they also offer so much more…

Which is why, for many people, this is their happy place. Perhaps in 2022, it will become your happy place as well.

With that in mind, here are five of our favorite reasons for spending as much time as possible in Los Cabos in 2022.

Amazing Golf

Los Cabos is home to an astounding 18 golf courses, including world-class layouts from big-name designers like Jack Nicklaus, Tiger Woods, Greg Norman, Fred Couples and Davis Love III. Norman’s course at Rancho San Lucas is the newest to open, followed by Robert Trent Jones Jr’s Costa Palmas Golf Club on the Los Cabos municipality’s East Cape. But with the exception of Vidanta, whose 9-hole layout is a throwback to an earlier era, the remaining 17 courses all offer an incredible destination experience, with world-class golf and magnificent views of ocean, beaches, mountains and desert.

Amazing Fishing

Cabo San Lucas as a tourist destination was built on big-game sport fishing, and although conditions are good for his premier local attraction on a year-round basis, summer and fall are the best seasons to get your hooks into massive billfish like blue and black marlin. That’s why the big-money tournaments are all scheduled during these two seasons. Don’t want to participate in a tournament? Just charter a boat for a day…or half-day. Virtually every local restaurant offers “you hook it, we cook it” specials and will prepare your catch any way you like it.

Amazing Vacation Rentals

Whether you’re traveling with that special someone, with your kids, with extended family, or with a group of friends for a destination golf or fishing trip, vacation rentals in Los Cabos offer far more options than resorts in terms of finding the right fit. For a couple, perhaps an ocean view penthouse condo is the perfect choice. For a family or larger groups, perhaps a beachfront home is preferred, or a luxury villa with commanding Land’s End views. With vacation rentals, it’s not just the size that’s optional, but the amenities and the location…which can be tailored to your personal vacation plans. Which is why discerning travelers always opt for luxury villas or vacation rentals over resorts. The privacy and security are nice, too.

Amazing Dining Experiences

The Los Cabos culinary scene has grown exponentially since the early days of tourism in the region some 50 years ago. Back then, fine dining was something of a foreign concept. Freshly caught seafood and a few regional Mexican specialty dishes were standard dinner fare after a day spent fishing or beachcombing. In today’s Los Cabos, both the dining and activities options are decidedly more cosmopolitan. Los Cabos has not forgotten its roots – the region’s thriving farm-to-table scene, for example, is premised on fresh local ingredients – but it has allowed those roots to spread far and wide. What has emerged is a world-class culinary destination that boasts acclaimed chefs and creative fusions, as well as the fish tacos and Damiana margaritas that long-time Los Cabos regulars know and love.

Amazing Beaches

Los Cabos has more blue flag beaches (22) than any other destination in Mexico, and blue flags are notable for ensuring a host of services and amenities like bathrooms, handicap access, informative signs, etc. But if all you’re looking for is a wide swath of golden sand, the opportunities then become endless. That’s the way it goes when you have more than 100 miles of coastline – as the Los Cabos municipality does – and the sun shines more than 350 days a year. Enjoy it! Pack a towel, lather on a little sunblock, and feel the Cabo vibes wash over you. You’re in your happy place!

The Other Side of Paradise: 4 Reasons to Fall in Love with the East Cape of Los Cabos

In the 50 years since Mexican tourist trust FONATUR first began developing Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo into world-class tourist destinations, the cape cities have seen remarkable changes: from the arrival of luxury resorts and pampering spas to upscale dining and championship level golf courses.

But there’s another side of Los Cabos, one much less developed, but with considerable charms for visitors seeking a different kind of “Cabo” vacation. That would be the East Cape, a seventy-mile stretch of coastline that swells outward from San Jose del Cabo to Los Barriles.

This coastline offers spectacular conditions for just about every outdoor activity imaginable, from surfing, diving, fishing, and hiking to mountain biking, camping, kayaking and kiteboarding.

If you’ve never experienced life on the East Cape, now’s a good time to start. Here are four of our favorite reasons for vacationing here (and for possibly making the vacation permanent).

The East Cape is a Time Machine to the “Old Cabo”

Because is it so much less developed than Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo, going to the East Cape is a bit like getting into a time machine and hitting the setting for “Old Cabo”. The benchmark fishing resorts of Los Barriles and Buena Vista are close to 50 years old, and offer a glimpse of the region’s past, when the prime attractions were fishing, beaches, and little else. But head south below La Ribera and the old Camino Cabo Este (East Cape Road) is almost completely dirt, from just north of Cabo Pulmo to Zacatitos, 10 miles outside San Jose del Cabo.

The East Cape is an off-the-grid paradise, in other words – or at least significant parts of it still are – and it offers an incredible combination of peace, privacy, gorgeous scenery, and luxury rental accomodatons at affordable prices.

The Undersea Fantasia of Cabo Pulmo National Park

In 1995, the 100 or so residents of the tiny East Cape village of Cabo Pulmo noticed that their offshore waters were overfished and their offshore reef was being degraded. What followed was one of the world’s great ecological success stories. Determined residents and regional academics petitioned for protection, and Cabo Pulmo became first a protected sanctuary, and finally a national park and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The eight fingers of offshore coral reef are among the oldest in the Western Hemisphere, and in the 25 years since Cabo Pulmo gained protected status, it has become the most densely populated area of the Sea of Cortez in terms of marine life; it literally teams with life, from mantas, dolphins and giant sea turtles to profusions of colorful tropical fish so intense it’s awe-inspiring. Cabo Pulmo has become one of the best snorkeling and diving destinations on the planet, and visits here are among the highlights of any East Cape vacation.

Beautiful Beaches Without Crowds or Vendors

Surfers have been heading to East Cape beaches like Shipwrecks and Nine Palms for generations, riding the waves from southwest swells. These beaches are beautiful, and there are hundreds just like them along the East Cape, stunning stretches of sand with virtually no one on them save a few surfers, or local fishermen putting their boats in the water. No vendors will bother you, no crowds will intrude on your space. It’s remarkable really; a bit like being in your own private Corona commercial.

Villas and Vacation Rentals That Will Take Your Breath Away

Has there ever been a year like 2020 in showing just how important it can be to truly get away from it all? Not only for peace of mind, but for the health and safety of family and friends?

The beauty of the East Cape is that you can get away in style. Take the Villa El Rincon del Sol, for example, a private 12-acre estate just north of Cabo Pulmo that offers a luxurious five-bedroom vacation rental with heated infinity pool and two waterfalls, plus over 200 meters of private beachfront. There are no crowds or vendors to bother you here. The only sounds you’ll hear are seabirds and waves gently lapping upon the shore. It’s a perfect privacy, with your own beach and some of the best snorkeling and diving in the world just down the road. The home is staffed with four full-time employees, including your own private chef, and if you have a stressful day in the infinity pool, a professional masseuse is only a phone call away.

This is the beauty of the East Cape experience, and it’s why a few discerning travelers are choosing it over the crowds and the noisy hustle-bustle of Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo. If you want the hustle-bustle and the action, you can still have it, of course. The East Cape is in the Los Cabos municipality, after all, and thus proximate by car to the “other” Cabo.

But there’s also immense natural beauty and total privacy, and those things are in shorter supply each passing year.

Your Own Private Paradise: 3 Tips to Finding the Perfect Vacation Rental in Los Cabos

Increasingly in 2020, discerning travelers are opting for vacation rentals rather than traditional hotels and resorts. Part of this paradigm shift has to do with the world in which we now live. Privacy, which vacation rentals offer more of by their very nature than even the most luxurious resorts, offer an upgraded sense of security in a pandemic world, and allow those desirous of a much-needed vacation to travel to paradise-like locations such as Los Cabos in safety and style.

But vacation rentals in beachfront destinations like Cabo San Lucas or San Jose del abo offer more than just mere privacy. They also offer an ability to customize your vacation experience in a way hotel and resorts never will, for the simple fact that the latter are tethered to a specific location.

What do we mean by this? We’ll explain more fully as we offer our top 3 tips for finding the perfect vacation rental in Los Cabos.

Customize Your Location

Is there a beach in Los Cabos you love above all others? Do you have a favorite surf break, or dive site? How about a favored restaurant or a bar where everyone knows your name?

One of the great things about luxury villas and vacation rentals is that they dot the coastline from Cabo San Lucas to San Jose del Cabo and beyond. If you want a place on the beach, or in mountain foothills, or with views of magnificent desert vistas, you can certainly have it. In effect, vacation rentals allow you to choose your scenery, to customize the views which make you happiest.

Just as importantly, they allow you close proximity to the activities or dining preferences you’re most likely to choose on a daily basis. Do you and your wife like playing golf together at a certain course? Then why not choose a vacation rental located close (if not fairway adjacent) to that course?

The ability to find a property that aligns perfectly with your vacation plans is a great luxury, but also a great convenience that will save you hours in back and forth travel time. Time that could be more fruitfully spent doing the things that drew you to Los Cabos in the first place.

Customize Your Amenities

Let’s be honest. It’s not going to be difficult to find a place with a swimming pool–or even an infinity edged pool with gorgeous ocean views–in a destination like Los Cabos. Every luxury villa and vacation rental worth its salt has a pool, not to mention a palapa topped outdoor lounge with a grilling station for sunset barbecues. Amenities like these are practically standard.

Other amenities are more hit and miss, which like location, allows visitors to customize a vacation property based upon their specific needs or wishes. We’d recommend vastly different properties for a couple seeking a romantic getaway, for instance, than for a family traveling with small children.

In the former case, easy access to a private chef for romantic candlelit dinners or a masseuse for side-by-side couple’s spa treatments might be preferred. For the latter, a home theater for family movie nights or direct beach access for sandcastle building are likely more suitable.

Vacation rentals in Los Cabos are apt to have a few things–like ocean views and swimming pools–in common. But there are many more aspects that can be customized. There’s no need to simply select a place based on budget or number of bedrooms, or to choose a hotel or resort based on brand reputation. Not when you can find a place that’s picture perfect for the kind of vacation you’ve always dreamed of having.

Find the Right Rental Agent

Although you can find plenty of people willing to act as your agent for villas or vacation rentals (or real estate, for that matter) in Los Cabos, very few have the knowledge and experience to find properties perfectly suited to both your wishes and your budget.

Enter Michael Aviani and Los Cabos Villas. Michael has been a trusted name in Los Cabos rentals and Cabo real estate for over 30 years, with a stellar reputation and an exhaustive knowledge of properties in the area; and his vacation rental company website, www.LosCabosVillas.com , is the premier resource for locating luxury villas and vacation rentals. Also if you would like to invest and buy a Piece of Paradise click on www.TheCaboRealEstate.com.

So if you really want to customize your Los Cabos vacation, start with finding the right rental agent and the right resources.

The good news? You’ve already found them.

Destination Relaxation – 3 Pampering New Luxury Spas in Los Cabos

The days of Los Cabos as a simple, laid-back beach and fishing destination are long gone.

It’s not that the beaches and big-game fishing aren’t still spectacular, mind you, it’s that the better class of resorts in cape cities Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo have spent the last two decades adding amenity after pampering amenity in an attempt (overwhelmingly successful, by the way) to turn Los Cabos into one of the world’s great luxury destinations.

At the heart of this reimagining are incredible collections of championship level golf courses and luxurious spas. The region now boasts no less than 18 currently operating golf courses designed by legendary names like Jack Nicklaus, Tiger Woods and Greg Norman, and expansive and decadent spas are now found at virtually every local upscale resort.

We’ve given plenty of updates recently on the golfing scene, but very few in regards the collection of spas. So with that in mind, here are three great new luxury spa options to enjoy on your next trip to Los Cabos:

Waldorf Astoria Spa at Waldorf Astoria Los Cabos Pedregal

By any name, this Pedgregal property is world-class. Originally opened as Capella Pedregal in 2009, the boutique 96-r00m resort was subsequently renamed The Resort at Pedregal before taking on the Waldorf Astoria imprimatur in 2019. The latter is a virtual synonym for luxury travel, and what were already five star amenities–the longest private tunnel in Mexico, cliffside dining above crashing Pacific Ocean waves–have now been elevated to the level of must-try destination experiences.

That’s certainly the case with the Waldorf Astoria Spa, which was created by renowned spa designer Sylvia Sepelli and offers pampering treatments grouped around central themes of the moon, the sea and Mexican folk healing. For example, massages based on lunar cycles and an indigenous herbal detox using the potent properties of indigenous Baja plants.

All the traditional spa bells and whistles are also found here, however, from an upscale beauty salon and a state-of-the-art fitness center to ten private treatment rooms and tennis courts with stunning elevated Cabo San Lucas city views.

Oasis Spa at Four Seasons Resort Los Cabos at Costa Palmas

This resort is the first ever luxury property on the East Cape of Los Cabos, a 70-mile belly-shaped arc that extends northward from San Jose del Cabo. For decades, the East Cape has been the last refuge for those who loved the old Baja of dirt roads and under-the-radar dive and surf spots.

That Baja still exists, but so too does a new kind of East Cape experience, an exclusive luxury hideaway on the coast at La Ribera. Relaxing couples’ treatments like side-by-side massages are a specialty of the house, offering intimacy and an enhanced state of relaxation across a variety of indoor and outdoor spaces, from private rooms to plunge pools to romantic strolls through the aromatic onsite herb garden.

Like the Waldorf Astoria Spa, Oasis also offers folk rituals based on the healing properties of indigenous plants. Yoga and breath work on the beach, exfoliating treatments for face, body, hands and feet, and the full-service Rossano Ferretti salon are yet more reasons to discover this newly opened Oasis.

Esencia Wellness at Nobu Hotel Los Cabos

There was excitement aplenty about the opening of a Nobu restaurant in Los Cabos…even more when it turned out it was part of a boutique Nobu resort on the Pacific Coast north of Cabo San Lucas, in the exclusive Diamante property development.

Chef Nobu Matsuhisa’s acclaimed fusion of traditional Japanese cuisine with Peruvian (and now Baja) ingredients is one reason to visit. Another is Esencia Wellness, an onsite spa that’s grounded in Japanese traditions but also promises plenty of modern refinements.

The pampering spa occupies over 13,000 square feet at Nobu, and features 13 treatment rooms, a spacious fitness center, a full-service salon, indoor hydrotherapy areas, and an outdoor hydrotherapy garden that includes steam, sauna, jacuzzi and more.

Signature offerings include Nobu Zen, a custom treatment that utilizes several techniques to alleviate stress.

The same description could just as easily be applied to Los Cabos itself. So do yourself a favor and plan a visit soon!

Safety, Privacy, Luxury: Why Villas and Vacation Rentals are the Best Option for Los Cabos Getaways in 2020

Villas and vacation rentals in Los Cabos have always been a popular choice with discerning travelers thanks to their spectacular views and one-of-a-kind amenities.

But villas and vacation rentals in Los Cabos also offer two other key features that are very much in the forefront of everyone’s thoughts in 2020: safety and privacy.

Safety

The global COVID-19 pandemic has changed the way we look at the world, and has certainly changed the way we view travel. To that end, Los Cabos has instituted sweeping new safety and sanitation protocols to ensure visitors can continue to enjoy worry-free getaways and vacations to the Land’s End destination.

From the moment visitors arrive at the international airport, thermal imaging, temperature checks, mandatory masks for employees, frequent sanitizing of all areas, and other new protocols reassure that every possible step is being taken to protect their safety.

Similarly stringent and thorough procedures are also in place for airport shuttles and other transportation services, and in every area resort. This strategy to make the destination safer on every level–in every category of business, and in every public space–is why Los Cabos recently became the first Pacific oriented destination to receive the Travel Safety Stamp granted by the World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC).

What is the Travel Safety Stamp? It’s a distinction designed to provide visitors with confidence that the highest available measures in hygiene and sanitation are being taken by businesses across the board, and that the health of travelers is the foremost focus of the destination as a whole.

Privacy

Los Cabos is home to many fine beachfront resorts, boutique hotels and other luxury properties. And as we mentioned above, these properties are going to great lengths to ensure the safety of their guests.

But there is another accommodation option that is not only safer, but also more private, and is every bit a luxurious as the best five-star hotel or resort.  That would be luxury villas, gorgeous examples of which hug the hills and cliffs above Cabo San Lucas, and trace the coastline that extends for over 100 miles in Los Cabos.

Privacy has always been a selling point for luxury villas, as well as other upscale rental homes in the area. But that’s particularly true in 2020, because no matter how safe and clean resorts make themselves, there is still the worry factor associated with being around other guests. People that you don’t know. You don’t know where they’ve been (for instance, high density urban areas with increased exposure, or states with recent upticks in reported cases) and you don’t whether they take safety protocols as seriously as you do.

So why take that chance? Luxury villas and upscale rental homes totally remove this worry. You, your friends and family are the only ones in residence; and the entire property is comprehensively sanitized between visits.

One tends to think of these scenically situated properties as perfect for romantic getaways, and of course they are. But they have so much space and so many amenities that you can easily turn these villas and beachfront homes into vacation hideaways for either small or large groups of friends and family.  The largest Los Cabos villas, for example, can accommodate up to 40 guests or more.

Luxury

Safety and privacy are the most important concerns, of course, when it comes to those closest to you. But luxury has its place, as well.

Trust us: Los Cabos villas are swimming in it. Virtually all the things you would expect from a first-class resort are available in these spectacular properties, from lavishly comfortable accommodations to sprawling infinity edge swimming pools, palm-shaded hammocks, beach access, bottomless margaritas, and on-call concierge service.

And the few that aren’t can easily be arranged. Ready for a poolside massage or a dinner party? Mobile spas and private chefs–all masked and vetted, of course–are only a phone call away, and perfectly willing to tailor their offerings to your personal preferences.

Plus, of course, there are the luxurious residential amenities found in any coastal manse, from state-of-the-art kitchens and palapa-topped bbq stations to home theaters and fully equipped business and fitness centers.

It’s the perfect Los Cabos accommodation option for 2020, and if you’ve never experienced this perfect combination of safety, privacy and luxury before, it may totally change the way you think about vacation travel in the future.

Los Cabos Golfing Glories Continue with a Spectacular New Course from Greg Norman

Another golf course has opened in Los Cabos. That makes 18 currently operating courses in the area, 17 of which are championship level layouts from the likes of Jack Nicklaus, Tiger Woods and Greg Norman.

Norman, the two-time major champion who was nicknamed the “Great White Shark” for his aggressive playing style, has designed the most recently unveiled course – Rancho San Lucas – centerpiece of an 834-acre resort and residential community set on a pristine stretch of beach on the Pacific Ocean 15 minutes from downtown Cabo San Lucas.

Known for his ‘least-disturbance’ design approach, Norman has created a low-profile, links-style layout that features sweeping ocean views from every hole. Earthmoving was kept to a minimum: the site’s contours and topography, Norman said, were ideal for the routing of a world-class course.

Spanning three different ecosystems, the 7,210-yard, par-72 golf course rambles through huge windswept dunes at the start, climbs through a thick cactus forest creased by meandering arroyos in the middle of the round, and returns players to the beach and sea on the back nine.

Tailored to the site’s terrain, Norman and his design team integrated indigenous landscapes and grass varietals that use the least amount of water, creating an eco-friendly golf experience that flows naturally with the dune and desert landscape. The club has applied for enrollment in Audubon International’s Cooperative Sanctuary Program for Golf Courses.

“Rancho San Lucas is the most spectacular piece of oceanfront property I’ve seen in a long time, so to have the opportunity to build a course on this site was truly once-in-a-lifetime,” Norman said. “My goal was to keep it as natural as possible while showcasing the site’s arroyos, dunes and view corridors. We wanted to build a sustainable course that is playable from all perspectives, including the forward tees. We’re committed to making a global impact by creating courses that withstand the test of time, and I truly believe this golf course is one of the best we’ve ever built.”

The layout’s defining characteristic is its re-vetted pot bunkers. These sharp-edged, steep-walled sandy pits were constructed from recycled artificial turf and are nearly identical to the natural sod-walled bunkers found on British links courses. Resistant to washouts, the club’s synthetic, low-maintenance bunkers are a first in Mexico. Norman used them sparingly.

Tees, greens and fairways at Rancho San Lucas are surfaced in papsalum, a salt- and drought-tolerant cultivar that uses a fraction of the insecticides and fertilizer required by normal grasses.

The versatile, well-groomed layout has five sets of tees and offers exceptional pace and variety. The par 5’s are brawny, the par 3’s are varied. The par 4’s, angled to all compass points, range from long and stout to short and fun.

Featuring a dramatic 300-foot elevation change, the well-strategized course has a handful of holes on the beach, notably the par-3 third, which parallels the sea and will give players fine views of breaching whales during the winter months. There’s also a signature island green at the par-3 17th hole. Corridors are wide and targets are generous: four of the putting surfaces exceed 12,000 square feet.

Mindful of the seasonal windy conditions, Norman devised a 12-hole ‘course within a course’ at Rancho San Lucas. This innovative 4,964-yard, par-49 layout consists of low-lying holes sheltered by the dunes and shielded from Pacific breezes. It promises a pleasant outing on a windy day in May.

With two on-course comfort stations, each providing Mexican specialties and ice-cold refreshments, players can enjoy an all-inclusive experience during the round.  A handsome ranchero-style clubhouse overlooks the fairways and sea. The practice facility features a basin-shaped driving range, an 18-hole putting course, and dedicated chipping, pitching and sand play areas.

Rancho San Lucas is a private club with exclusive access available to guests of Solmar Group hotels and rental properties.

Recently Reopened Cabo San Lucas Country Club Golf Course Showcases A New Look

For all of its golfing glories–which now include three of the world’s 100 best courses and championship-level layouts from legendary names like Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods–Los Cabos has only one course that features views of El Arco and the evocative granite monuments that comprise the Land’s End headland at the southernmost tip of the Baja California peninsula. That’s the Cabo San Lucas Country Club, which originally opened in 1994 during the first wave of the Los Cabos golf boom, but has recently been given a major renovation by acclaimed Mexican golf course architect Agustin Piza.

The reason for the remodel wasn’t so much the age or difficulty level of the course, although both were addressed, but rather the extensive damage done by Tropical Storm Lidia in 2017.

“We needed to demonstrate to visitors and the community that Cabo San Lucas Country Club was not wiped out by Tropical Storm Lidia in September, 2017,” said club project manager Alfonso Terrazas Ceseña. “We were hurt (by torrential rains), but the damage was superficial and certainly not catastrophic. We’ve bounced back as part of a five-month renovation project, and I believe we’ve succeeded in restoring confidence and credibility in the club.”

The new look Cabo San Lucas Country Club still retains its parkland-style charms, stretching to 6,852 yards (par 71) from the black tees, and comparing favorably to golf courses in Palm Springs, California. Gently rolling fairways girdled by waste bunkers, cardon cactus, palo blanco trees and colorful bougainvillea characterize the new layout. Tall stony mountains frame the course to the north. Lakes bring water into play at seven holes, notably at the testing par-4 ninth and 18th holes, where a large rock-rimmed lagoon protects each green.

Agustin Piza, a Mexican designer who has worked extensively throughout Latin America, altered several holes to improve sightlines and enhance playability. In particular, the club’s back nine was shortened and its corridors widened to expand the layout’s ocean views. The new and revised holes feature improved flexibility from the forward tees, better risk-reward scenarios from the back tees, and more undulating greens. Bunkers throughout the course were reshaped and upgraded. Pruning of trees and vegetation has created a breezier, links-style environment. The club, readily accessible by area hotels and cruise ship passengers, also features the only lighted driving range in Los Cabos.

In the wake of the remedial work by Piza, holes one through seven remain the same, while the par-3 eighth and par-4 ninth holes were swapped for the par-3 17th and par-4 18th holes, respectively.

The most noticeable changes are found on the back nine, specifically holes 10 through 16. The par-4 10th plays from the same set of tee boxes as the original hole, but a friendlier green closer to the tees enables average players to reach it in regulation. The par-3 11th is a new creation that plays to the site of the old 12th green, which Piza refashioned into a large, wavy putting surface. The 12th hole was converted from a brawny par 4 to a sporty par 5, while the par-4 13th occupies the original hole’s corridor but plays to a remodeled green. The par-3 14th, stretching to 208 yards, brings a lake into play on the right. At the par-5 16th, Piza reversed the direction of the hole. The fairway, pointed to the Sea of Cortes, now runs from north to south.

The latest changes are part of the long history and lore of the scenically situated course. Originally the dream of an East Coast developer named Ed Reisdorf, who visualized the course during a cruise ship visit to Cabo San Lucas nearly 30 years ago, what was first called the Campo de Carlos Golf & Country Club premiered in 1994 with a layout from acclaimed designer Roy Dye, with an assist from his son Matt.

Roy Dye was the brother of famed course architect Pete Dye, whose many designs include the TPC at Sawgrass, and a respected course designer in his own right. Reisdorf hired him because the Denver-based Dye Corporation was said to have built more courses that hosted PGA tournaments than any other.

“This is a dream site,” said the elder Dye at the time. “It’s got natural slope and great views of the ocean.”

A quarter century and many changes later, both statements still hold true.

Cabo Rocks! The Best Music Festivals and Fiestas in Los Cabos

In Mexico there is always music. You hear it everywhere….not just at bars or nightclubs, but in shops and restaurants,
and in the streets from wandering mariachis.

Music is so much a part of the fabric of the Mexican experience that virtually all events can be characterized, to a greater or lesser extent, as “music festivals.”

That’s particularly true in Los Cabos. For instance….

Bisbee’s Black & Blue, the world’s richest fishing tournament, kept anglers reeling long after the final weigh-in last year thanks to a concert from David Pack’s Legends Live, a collection of musicians from some of the biggest rock bands of the 1070s and 80s.

Sabor a Cabo, the Los Cabos region’s biggest food festival, has boasted appearances from top chefs and from Mexican supergroup Mana and soul/funk legends Earth, Wind & Fire, among others.

The Stars & Stripes Golf & Fishing Tournament, similarly, pairs its daytime attractions with some nighttime music from headline-grabbing rock stars like Sammy Hagar and Don Felder of The Eagles. Wherever one turns, in other words – whether to food and wine events, sporting competitions or cultural to-dos – music is there, too.

But while it’s true that every big event in Los Cabos comes complete with music, there are only a dozen or so where music is the unquestioned focus, the centerpiece attraction. Most are rooted in classic rock n’ roll, but a select few showcase other musical styles.

With that in mind, here are five of our favorites:

Sammy Hagar Birthday Bashes at Cabo Wabo Cantina

Every year since 1990, loyal “Redheads” from around the world have flocked to Cabo San Lucas for Sammy Hagar’s Birthday Bashes at Cabo Wabo Cantina. In 2018, the former Van Halen and Montrose celebrates his 71st year on the planet with an all-star cast of visiting musicians – including The Circle members Michael Anthony, Jason Bonham, and Vic Johnson. Shows are scheduled for October 9, 11 and 13. General admission tickets are available to winners of a random drawing, but those who aren’t selected will still have an opportunity to attend, as some dinner show tickets are always made available in early October on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Tropic of Cancer Concert Series

Okay, this one isn’t actually in Los Cabos….but the peninsula’s original pueblo magico, Todos Santos, is only a one-hour drive from Cabo San Lucas, and this event has some serious rock star pedigree….so we’re breaking our own rules.

Former R.E.M. guitarist Peter Buck pioneered jam culture in Todos Santos with this annual music festival, which brought in high-profile musicians for performances at the landmark Hotel California, as well as the town’s picturesque main plaza. Buck’s festival went on hiatus after he made some controversial comments about local politics at the 2016 event, but the music lives on. The freshly minted Tropic of Cancer Concert Series premiered in 2017, and returns for a third outing in 2019, with the now usual all-star lineup appearing January 10th through the 20th.

Jazz Weekend in San Jose del Cabo

This year saw the 6th edition of San José del Cabo Jazz Weekend, a festival dedicated to the freewheeling American musical style held yearly at the popular Plaza del Pescador, an outdoor mall across from San Jose del Cabo’s scenic, resort-lined Playa Hotelera. Plaza del Pescador has only been around for a few years, but has quickly established a reputation for itself as a music venue, thanks to tenants such as Jazz Tapas Café and Rock&Brews, the restaurant chain started by KISS members Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley. Admission is always free for this two-day music fest in February, which features a talented array of jazz musicians. Latin jazz, as might be expected, is particularly well represented.

Fiesta de la Musica

In 1981 a French director of music and culture, inspired by a statistic that claimed half the country’s children played a musical instrument, began dreaming of a way to engage this musical spirit en masse. Soon after, in 1982, the first Fete de la Musique was held in Paris, where it was scheduled to coincide with the summer solstice, the longest day of the year.

Flash forward 36 years, and the Fete de la Musique is no longer solely a French celebration, but a worldwide phenomenon that takes place annually in over 450 cities in 12o countries around the globe. For the past 10 years, that list of cities has included San Jose del Cabo, the oldest and most populous of the two cape cities (Cabo San Lucas is the other) that comprise the modern-day municipality of Los Cabos. In San Jose, however, the celebration is known by its Spanish name, La Fiesta de la Musica.

Over the past decade, the Fiesta de la Musica has become so important and so beloved by the local community that it’s now considered the premier music festival in Los Cabos. Certainly, it’s the most robustly attended, drawing over 25,000 people annually. The 2018 edition featured more than 100 bands and musical acts performing throughout the city’s historic downtown area. Expect the number to rise in June 2019.

International Concert Music Festival in La Paz

Okay, this isn’t technically in Los Cabos either. But if you love classical music, this yearly festival in Baja California Sur’s capital city is definitely worth the two-hour road trip.

Classically trained musicians from countries around the world come together each autumn in beautiful La Paz to provide five nights of memorable music at the elegant Sala de Conciertos, a performance venue in the downtown heart of the city. Featured composers in years past – this year marks the ninth edition – have included Beethoven and Debussy.

The Cabo Culinary Calendar – A Guide to Food Festivals in Los Cabos

Los Cabos’ ever evolving dining scene is shown off to its best advantage in the region’s increasingly packed calendar of food and wine related events, which spotlight the creativity of Los Cabos’ top chefs, but also celebrate traditional local specialties like freshly sourced seafood and organically grown fruits and vegetables.

For those seeking a true taste of Los Cabos – from food festivals in cape cities Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo to fairs and fiestas in Todos Santos and beyond – here’s a basic guide to the biggest events on the local culinary calendar:

Summer Harvest Festivals

Each July, when the pitahaya ripens, the residents of the small organic farming community Miraflores (in English, “Behold the Flowers”) celebrate with a lively weekend harvest festival. Pitahayas are a fruit derived from the organ pipe cactus, and are extraordinarily rich in antioxidants, which may account for the legendary longevity of Miraflores residents.

Pitahayas were the favorite food of the region’s indigenous inhabitants, the Pericues, and thus also have a strong cultural and historical component. This year’s “feria” is coming up soon – July 13 to 15 – and will include the crowning of a festival queen, a pitahaya gathering contest, and a vast array of food and drink, much of it featuring the region’s signature fruit.

Pitahayas may be the most emblematic fruit in Baja California Sur, but the  most ubiquitous are mangoes. You can reach up and take them off the trees at many area resorts and restaurants, and during summer months, freshly squeezed mango juice becomes a delicious daily treat for residents and visitors alike.

A trip to the annual Todos Santos Mango Festival will heighten your appreciation for what can be done in the name of this luscious tropical fruit. See if you agree with who dishes out the best Mangate, a dessert typical of the region. The 2018 edition – hosted in the state’s only pueblo magico, one hour north of Cabo San Lucas by car – takes place later this month: July 28 – 31.

Sabor a Cabo International Food & Wine Festival

The region’s biggest culinary festival, called Sabor a Cabo, is held each year in early December, and draws over 3,000 guests to an outdoor site in Los Cabos to sample food and wine, and enjoy live musical performances (past performers include Grammy winner Lila Downs, legendary Mexican rock band Mana, and elemental R&B superstars Earth, Wind & Fire). The main event – which rotates to various local venues – is always preceded by smaller auxiliary events, including a country food and wine tasting that shows off the area’s incredible organically grown produce and fresh local seafood. Dates for the 13th edition will be announced later this year. In the meantime, you can sample the wares from the festival’s 50 to 60 participating chefs by having dinner at virtually any fine restaurant in Los Cabos.

Cheese & Wine Festival and Sheraton Grand Hacienda del Mar

Each year – typically in March – Sheraton Grand’s luxurious Hacienda del Mar resort transforms its Salon Hacienda ballroom for a mammoth tasting celebration of cheese and wine. Live music accompanies the enormous selection of internationally representative quesos y vinos, with all ticket proceeds going to benefit the Los Cabos Children’s Foundation.

Sabores de Baja Festival in Miraflores

The small town of Miraflores is notable for several reasons, including the unusual longevity of its residents and its annual summer harvest festival celebrating pitahayas, the favorite fruit of the area’s indigenous inhabitants. Mainly, though, it is known as the foremost organic farming community in the Los Cabos municipality, the place the region’s best restaurants go to source their produce. It’s the perfect place, in other words, to host an organic food festival that focuses on the traditional cuisine and culture of Los Cabos. Sabores de Baja (sabores translates as tastes or flavors) is expected to return for its 3rd annual edition in April 2019.

Gastrovino Baja Food & Wine Festival

Aside from the annual Sabor a Cabo shindig in Los Cabos, Gastrovino is the biggest food and wine festival in Baja California Sur. Held each April or May in the state’s only pueblo magico, Todos Santos, Gastrovino is organized by the owners of a local wine and olive oil shop called La Bodega de Todos Santos, and features a weekend chockablock with tantalizing tasting opportunities. The pairing dinner at legendary Hotel California is one of many recurring highlights, but the “Big Cheese,” so to speak, is the Sunday main event on the town square. There, dozens of wineries from Baja’s Valle de Guadalupe share their palate-pleasing wares, as do many of the region’s best restaurants. Live music is also a staple, as is a silent auction to benefit local programs for children.

Taco Fest Los Cabos at Casa Dorada

Los Cabos’ top chefs converge on the luxurious beachfront Casa Dorada resort each April, where they compete to produce the most delicious variation of Mexico’s signature comfort food: the taco. The winners are traditionally the guests, who get to sample creative taco entries from some of the area’s most talented culinary craftsmen. Live music is also featured
