Swinging into Summer – June Parties & Events in Los Cabos

June is an exciting time in Los Cabos, thanks to a slate of seasonal events that range from art and music

focused fiestas to outdoor adventures and prestigious sporting competitions.

The first month of summer, for example, sees the start of peak surf season on the Sea of Cortez side beaches of Los Cabos; most notably at Costa Azul, where Zippers surf break is ground zero for the area’s only World Surf League sponsored professional event: The Los Cabos Open of Surf.

June also ushers in the season for Los Cabos municipality’s yearly roster of cash-rich fishing tournaments, with two high-profile competitions.

We take a look at these events and more in our regular monthly preview of the region’s upcoming attractions….

San José del Cabo Art Walk  (June 7, 14, 21, 28)

The historic Distrito del Arte in San Jose del Cabo takes center stage each Thursday evening during high tourist season – November through June – when residents and visitors alike are invited to stroll its cobblestone streets and peruse the many eclectic fine arts galleries. Art Walk hours are 5 to 9 p.m, when the neighborhood comes alive with wine, cheese and guided tours, as well as colorful street artists and strolling mariachis.

This season’s Art Walk has been the biggest and best yet; and there is still time to enjoy the event before it goes on hiatus:  four more Thursday evening celebrations are scheduled before the end of June.

For those unable to experience this festival of sights, sounds and flavors before then, don’t worry. Art Walk returns at the beginning of November each year, with all new art and, traditionally, personalized altars as part of Day of the Dead remembrances throughout Mexico.

5th Annual Cabo Summer Slam/Pelagic Triple Crown of Fishing Tournament  (June 7 to 9)

 

Pelagic, a Newport Beach based company, is one of the world’s leaders when it comes to lifestyle apparel and high-performance gear associated with watersports like fishing, boating, diving and surfing. So it’ll come as no surprise that the 5th annual Cabo Summer Slam, slated for June 7 – 9, offers some high stakes prizes and jackpots. Over $200,000 is on the line in 2018, meaning it’s the biggest Cabo San Lucas based tournament until Bisbee’s big money competitions in October.

 

This is a bet big, win big scenario. General entry is $2,500 for tournament teams, or $12,500 to cover base entry plus all daily jackpots. Participating fishermen will be targeting the usual suspects: marlin (blue, black and striped), sailfish, tuna, dorado and wahoo; but prizes are spread across four divisions.

 

Prizes will be given to teams that catch and release the most aggregate billfish points, and to those weighing the heaviest two-fish total of each gamefish species – tuna, wahoo and dorado – during the two-day tournament. As with most local tournaments, however, the biggest money is paid out in jackpots.

 

Los Cabos Open of Surf  (June 11 to 17)

 

There are two World Surf League sponsored surfing events held annually on the Baja California peninsula: one is a Big Wave Tour event off Todos Santos Island near Ensenada; the other is the Los Cabos Open of Surf, hosted each June at Zippers point break off Playa Costa Azul in San José del Cabo.

 

When it premiered in 2013, the Los Cabos Open of Surf was a 6-star men’s event under the ASP (the forerunner to the WSL). Women joined the fun in 2014, and since 2015, the LCOS has been a QS 6000 event solely for women and junior men and women.

 

The 2018 competition is scheduled for June 11 – 17, and like events in previous years, will be a celebration of all aspects of surf culture, from beach parties and culinary fetes to nightly entertainment featuring DJs and live musical performers.

Fiesta de la Música in San José del Cabo  (June 23)

In 1982, the first Fete de la Musique was held in Paris, where it was scheduled to coincide with the summer solstice, the longest day of the year. Flash forward 36 years, and the Fete de la Musique is no longer solely a French celebration, but a worldwide phenomenon that takes place annually in over 450 cities in 12o countries around the globe. For the past 10 years, that list of cities has included San Jose del Cabo, where the celebration is known by its Spanish name, La Fiesta de la Musica.

This summer symphony is free and open to all musicians who’d like to participate, from amateurs to professionals, across all musical genres. The only prerequisite for participants and spectators – for whom admission is also free – is a love for music, a passion that’s so pervasive internationally that music is often referred to as the universal language. The art form’s universality, in fact, provides the context for the event’s local motto: “la fiesta de todos y para todos” (“the party from all and for all).

Over the past decade, the Fiesta de la Musica has become so important and so beloved by the local community that it’s now considered the premier music festival in Los Cabos. Certainly, it’s the most robustly attended, drawing over 25,000 people annually. The 2018 edition is slated for Saturday, June 23 – 6 p.m. to 2 a.m. – with some 100 or more bands and musical acts expected to perform throughout the city’s historic downtown area.

22nd Annual Stars and Stripes Golf and Fishing Tournament  (June 28 to July 1)

The 22nd edition of what amounts to the complete Cabo lifestyle experience – fishing, golf, music, food and drinks, beach days, and more – is scheduled to return June 28.

The fishing tournament has proved to be most enduringly popular part of Stars & Stripes. It launches from beautiful Chileno Bay, with participating anglers vying to bag the biggest tuna, dorado, wahoo, sailfish, and blue, black and striped marlin. For 2018, start times have been pushed back to allow a more vacation-like approach.

But golf, too, is a major draw. Participants this year have the choice of nine or 18-hole tournament outings at Puerto Los Cabos, which currently boasts 27 spectacular holes from champion golfers Jack “The Golden Bear” Nicklaus and Greg “The Great White Shark” Norman. Nine of the holes at Puerto Los Cabos are brand new, so tournament entrants will be among the first to play them.

Nightly musical entertainment is also a distinguishing feature of Stars & Stripes. In past years, rock stars like Sammy Hagar, The Doobie Brothers, Three Dog Night, and Kenny Loggins have played their biggest hits. This year the headliner is Don Felder, former lead guitarist for the Eagles, and a co-writer of the iconic song Hotel California. Plenty of other acts are also on tap, including The Downtown Band, and the festivities will once again be hosted by Shawn Parr, AKA “The Ambassador of Country Music”.

Racing, Tasting and Fundraising: April Events in Los Cabos

April in Los Cabos means the end of Spring Break and seasonal whale watching adventures, but the local event calendar doesn’t suffer in the slightest. On the contrary, the glorious springtime temperatures usher in a fresh set of outdoor cultural festivals and sporting competitions.

Off-road racing enthusiasts, particularly of the vintage rally sport variety, will love NORRA’s Mexican 1000, which offers challenging competitive conditions as well as a chance to revel in the nostalgia of what Baja racing looked like in the 1960s and 70s.

That race’s finish line fiesta takes place in San Jose del Cabo, and indeed what Los Cabos does best in April are celebrations centered around food and drink. The farming community of Miraflores, for example, is hosting an organic food festival; luxury beachfront resort Casa Dorada is bringing in top chefs for a taco fiesta; and charity focused golf tournament Paws ‘n Claws concludes its day of fun in the sun with a large outdoor BBQ party.

San José del Cabo Art Walk  (April 5, 12, 19, 26)

A chance to check out San Jose’s recent downtown makeover is another reason to make the Thursday night pilgrimage.

Paws n’ Claws Golf Tournament and BBQ  (April 8)

The biggest annual fundraiser for the Los Cabos Humane Society traditionally starts with a golf competition at one of Los Cabos’ many world-class courses and concludes with a gala fundraising dinner at a premier local fine dining establishment. The gorgeous Jack Nicklaus’ designed Palmilla will once again host this year’s tournament, with nine holes each on both the Mountain and Ocean layouts. This year, as last, a BBQ replaces the typical upscale dinner. Acre Restaurant, one of the leaders of the local farm-to-table movement, will provide tasty BBQ fixings to accompany the fundraising silent auction.

Sabores de Baja Festival in Miraflores  (April 15)

The small town of Miraflores is notable for several reasons, including the unusual longevity of its residents and its annual summer harvest festival celebrating pitahayas, the favorite fruit of the area’s indigenous inhabitants. Mainly, though, it is known as the foremost organic farming community in the Los Cabos municipality, the place the region’s best restaurants go to source their produce. It’s the perfect place, in other words, to host an organic food festival that focuses on the traditional cuisine and culture of Los Cabos. The 2nd annual Sabores de Baja (sabores translates as tastes or flavors) will be hosted by Doña Pame Restaurante from noon to 5 p.m. on April 15, and will feature live music from local idol Luna Itzel.

NORRA Mexican 1000  (April 20 – 27)

The world’s most rugged off-road race, the legendary Baja 1000, has for better than four decades been run under the SCORE (Southern California Off-Road Enthusiasts) banner. But that wasn’t always the case. Back when the Baja 1000 was inaugurated, in 1967, it was organized by NORRA (the National Off-Road Racing Association). NORRA returned to the peninsula’s off-road racing scene in a big way in 2010, when it kicked off the first Mexican 1000, a fun, vintage-style rally race meant to evoke the flavor of the early Baja 1000s. The new version revs up in Ensenada, then courses down the peninsula before concluding in Los Cabos, where it is celebrated with a huge after-party and awards ceremony.

2018 Taco Fest Los Cabos at Casa Dorada  (April 28)

On the final Saturday in April, many of the area’s best chefs will converge on the luxurious beachfront Casa Dorada, where they will compete to produce the most delicious version of Mexico’s most famous comfort food, the taco. An all-star cast of judges will crown a champ, but the true winners are guaranteed to be the guests, who get to sample both traditional and contemporary/creative taco entries from these very talented culinary craftsmen. Live music will also be featured.

Four Los Cabos Courses Voted to Golf Digest’s “World’s 100 Best” List

Golf Digest recently released its third biennial ranking of the World’s 100 Best Golf Courses, and Los Cabos has made yet another strong showing, with four its 16 operating courses – a staggering 25% – making the elite cut. Newcomer Quivira joins the Diamante Dunes Course, the Ocean Course at Cabo del Sol, and Querencia in the rankings.

Diamante G.C. (Dunes) moved up five spots and now sits at No. 47 on Golf Digest’s exclusive roster. “Mexico’s first true links (was) fashioned by Davis Love III and his design team…from a fantastic set of white sand dunes along the Pacific Ocean, huge portions of which are without vegetation and seem like enormous snow drifts,” the magazine’s digital edition reported. “Holes hug the flowing terrain with little artificiality. Two holes on the back nine once played around a long lagoon, but have been replaced by (the) new 12th and 13th holes on the beach. Now all of the second nine is adjacent to the ocean, amidst the tallest dunes.” Perhaps most significantly, “No other links in the world sports cactus.”

Cabo del Sol (Ocean), the course credited with establishing Los Cabos as a world-class golf destination, retains its position at No. 70 on the list.  “When Jack Nicklaus first saw this Baja Peninsula site, what can best be described as Scottsdale-meets-the-Sea of Cortez, his thought was: ‘This is my chance to design a Pebble Beach,’ the report stated. “He took full advantage of that chance, developing an exciting routing that plays from highlands of desert cacti over dry washes and down to the sea on both nines.” When the layout opened in 1994, Nicklaus said it had the three finest finishing holes in golf. “That might still be true 24 years later, given that the greens at 16, 17 and 18 are all perched atop rocks above the crashing surf of Whale Bay.”

New to the list and debuting at No. 93 is Quivira G.C., the epic Land’s End layout grafted by Jack Nicklaus onto a jaw-dropping site marked by huge dunes, sheer cliffs and rolling foothills. “To see photos of Quivira’s cliffhanging fifth and sixth greens, one would expect this to be a mountainous golf course,” Golf Digest said of Quivira, which opened in 2014. “But a majority of its holes are on Pacific coastline sand dunes close to sea level or along the flank of a high desert plateau dotted with torote and cardon trees. Still, what earns the attention here is the par-4 fifth, its tee at 278 feet above sea level and its green at the far end of a ribbon fairway 107 feet below. Designer Jack Nicklaus calls this location, ‘one of the great pieces of property in the world,’ and he can be forgiven for requiring long cart rides between several holes. Such is the price to link together 18 truly sterling golf holes.”

Moving up a notch to No. 97 on Golf Digest’s “World 100 Greatest Golf Courses” roster is Querencia C.C., a brilliant Tom Fazio design opened in 2000 and set within a private 1,800-acre golf community. “The routing wanders the rugged high desert plateau on the outward nine, toward the Sea of Cortez, hopscotching a dramatic canyon on the par-3 eighth,” the magazine stated. “After reaching the far point on the par-5 ninth, the course turns for home over similar terrain, via two more outstanding par 3s, the 11th and 14th. Other holes have humpbacked fairways and greens tucked beneath huge rock outcroppings.”

In addition to the World 100 Greatest feature, Golf Digest also produced “The Best Courses in 206 Countries” as part of its Planet Golf report. Not surprisingly, Los Cabos dominates the Mexico entry. Ten of the courses on the 16-course list, including five of the top six venues, are located in Los Cabos, the hemisphere’s most celebrated golf getaway. Diamante (Dunes) and Cabo del Sol (Ocean) command the top two slots, followed by Quivira (No. 4), Querencia (No. 5) and El Dorado (No. 6). Also included on the Best in Mexico roster are Chileno Bay, Diamante (El Cardonal), Cabo del Sol (Desert), Palmilla, and Cabo Real.

Finding Your Paradise On Baja Sur’s Beautiful East Cape

Los Cabos booming real estate market has, along with a concurrent explosion of new luxury resorts, transformed the coastline from cape cities Cabo San Lucas to San Jose del Cabo, so that even the 20-mile coastal “tourist corridor” which connects them is awash in ambitious developments with spectacular Sea of Cortez views.

The big question now for those seeking their own slice of paradise is what’s next? Where is the next big real estate frontier?

The answer lies nearby, on the Los Cabos municipality’s gorgeous East Cape, a belly-shaped arc that juts seaward some 70 miles from the outskirts of San Jose del Cabo to Los Barriles and the Bay of Palms. Although Los Barriles and neighboring Buenavista have attracted fishermen and retirees for decades, the East Cape as a whole has, until quite recently, remained largely undeveloped, a sparsely populated paradise home to small, scattered off-the-grid homes and communities.

The East Cape is now seeing larger developments, however, headlined by the new Four Seasons Hotel & Residences at La Ribera.  Long thought of as the last bastion of “old Baja” in Los Cabos, the East Cape is experiencing its own growth spurt, and for those aspiring to coastal property in one of the most gorgeous and sought after vacation home destinations in the world, the time to buy is now.

Coastal lots have recently opened up at Boca del Salado, a breathtaking beachfront development nestled between San Jose del Cabo and Cabo Pulmo, between the mountains of the Sierra La Trinidad and the Sea of Cortez; at prices that are still incredibly affordable for such stunningly situated seaside property.

In addition to the incredible views, future Boca del Salado owners will also have easy access to the world-class water sports that put the East Cape on the map in the first place: fishing, diving, surfing, windsurfing and kiteboarding.

Bisbee’s East Cape Offshore tournament draws big-game anglers each summer, but the fishing is magnificent year-round. Nearby Cabo Pulmo is home to one of the oldest and largest living coral reefs in the Western Hemisphere, a protected marine sanctuary that now boasts the highest abundance of fish in the Sea of Cortez. It is unquestionably the best snorkel and dive site on the peninsula. Surfaris to gorgeous breaks at Shipwrecks and Nine Palms have long been popular among destination surfers; and each winter, strong El Norte winds turn East Cape community Los Barriles into the wind sports capital of the world.

Three Great Reasons to Buy a Home in Los Cabos

Los Cabos is currently in the midst of an unprecedented growth spurt, with a boom in both resort and residential developments. And why not?

There’s a reason – actually, quite a few of them – that Hollywood movie stars and professional athletes have been flying down for decades, relaxing with friends and family in 5-star resorts, or their own seaside villas.

Here are three of the most obvious:

Lifestyle

Los Cabos unique geographic features – mountains descending to desert, desert transforming to gorgeous beaches at the boundaries of the Pacific Ocean and Sea of Cortez – translate to an almost unlimited choice of outdoor activities, from zip-lining and mountain climbing to off-road racing and surfing, diving and sailing.

Golf and fishing have proved the most perennially popular, however. The sport fishing remains among the best in the world, and Cabo San Lucas holds the world’s richest marlin tournament, Bisbee’s Black & Blue, with million dollar plus payouts to winning teams each October. Three of the municipality’s 15 operating golf courses are currently ranked among the 100 Best in the World by Golf Digest, and new loops are on the way from Greg Norman and Fred Couples.

The food and wine scenes are also now first-class, thanks to the arrival of celebrity chefs like Jean-Georges Vongerichten, Nobu Matsuhisa, Enrique Olvera and Richard Sandoval, and a regional renaissance in San Jose del Cabo at restaurants like Flora Farm, Acre, and Huerta Los Tamarindos. The wine explosion in Valle de Guadalupe, outside of Ensenada, has not only provided plenty of excellent pairing options, but has also resulted in more advanced wine programs, with onsite sommelier service at many upscale restaurants and resorts.

More importantly, perhaps, for families, is the foreign culture component; and the area now boasts several excellent bilingual schools.

Value

Look at the cost of ocean view properties in the U.S. and then compare that with properties in Los Cabos. When it comes to value, there really is no comparison. Los Cabos is the better value by leaps and bounds.

For true value, however, one must also take into account the lower cost of living in Mexico: the lower cost of consumer goods, the lower cost of utilities, and the lower cost of labor; specifically, domestic workers.

Investment

As Los Cabos continues to add both infrastructure and additional population, the price of its most impressive ocean view properties will only continue to rise. Not only is buying a home here an investment in a more enjoyable and more relaxed lifestyle, it’s also an investment with huge upside in terms of future returns.

What’s the old saying? “Buy land, they’re not making it anymore.”

They’re certainly not making any more at Land’s End, where the sun shines over 330 days a year, and the fish are always biting.

Those are a few of the reasons, but far from all why buying a home in Los Cabos is a desirable option. There is also the benefit of fast and easy Mexican residency, favorable exchange rates, a largely English fluent workforce, and the fact that you can have belongings shipped via ground rather than air transport.

The Ultimate Vacation in Los Cabos is a Permanent One

Los Cabos’ charms are so obvious–gorgeous golden sand beaches, breathtaking Pacific Ocean and Sea of Cortez vantages, a perpetually temperate climate–that many Americans and Canadians have taken the leap from enjoying the area as a favored vacation destination to enjoying it on a year-round basis. Of the more than one million Americans currently living in Mexico, a significant percentage have settled in cape cities Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo.

For some it is the perfect retirement home, for others an ideal place to work at online jobs that have no actual geographic requirement. In either case, the transition is typically smoother than one might expect. Yes, Mexico has its own language and culture–a much older and more complex culture, by the way, than its North American neighbors–but Los Cabos’ history as a premier international travel destination has translated to a largely English fluent population. Thus, although a facility in Spanish is certainly an advantage to expats and transplants, it is by no means a necessity.

Paperwork too requires very little stress. There are basically two types of visas/residency cards: Temporary and Permanent. All visitors to Mexico are issued an FMM visa that is good for up to six months. People with the intention of staying between six months and four years must have a Temporary Resident card, with various classifications defined by work status or financial means. This card must be updated at six month intervals until the four year mark, when it may be exchanged for a Permanent Resident card (those who meet certain criteria may be eligible to receive this identification card immediately). Dual citizenship is an option that may also be considered after permanent residency status is achieved. Fortunately, for those for whom even a little paperwork is too much, the area boasts many skilled immigration professionals, who are happy to do everything but sign your name and put your fingerprints on the relevant forms.

In many cases, time shares and regular yearly visits serve as first steps, a lead-up to a permanent move south of the border. The biggest aspect of this commitment is not the paperwork, which is largely pro forma, but buying or renting property; and due to a recent building boom that has spawned dozens of new luxury hotels and residential developments, there has never been a larger and more varied selection of ocean view homes, condos and villas than there is right now. There are several aspects of this process that are unique to Mexico, however, so it is important to consult with local experts before agreeing to terms.

Los Cabos Infrastructure Improvements Pave Way for Rapid Growth

Few places on earth have experienced as radical and overwhelming a transformation as Los Cabos, growing from a small municipality of 10,000 inhabitants in 1970 to a cosmopolitan international travel destination with over 280,000 permanent residents by 2015. The makeover has been remarkable, and would have been unthinkable without periodic, graduated improvements in both support services and infrastructure.

The first travel boom occurred in the early 1970s, thanks to major infrastructure upgrades: most notably the completion of the 1,000 mile Transpeninsular Highway from Tijuana to Los Cabos in 1973, and the inauguration of the international airport in San Jose del Cabo in 1977. Dredging also began on the Cabo San Lucas Marina in 1973, but was not completed until the mid 1980s, setting the stage for yet another growth spurt.

The third major infrastructure stage is underway now, with enhancements and advancements of airports, roads and marinas a seemingly necessary step to keep pace with an unprecedented explosion of high-end hotels and resorts. From Hurricane Odile in 2014 to the end of 2018, some 4,000 new hotel rooms will come online in Los Cabos, a 22% increase that will bring total room availability to over 18,000.

Airports

Improvements to the Los Cabos International Airport were in large part responsible for the record 4.2 million passengers in 2016. These enhancements include a new international terminal and a new FBO (fixed-base operator) for private jets. The smaller airport in Cabo San Lucas – traditionally the more popular landing spot for personal and corporate aircraft – has also seen upgrades, including the lengthening of the runway to 7,000 feet, and new navigational aids and air traffic control equipment.

Roads

In November of 2015, Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto flew in to inaugurate a new 45 kilometer long toll road from the Los Cabos International Airport in San Jose del Cabo to central Cabo San Lucas. The new thruway alleviates traffic congestion along the Tourist Corridor highway that traditionally connects the cape cities, and significantly shortens the driving time between San Jose and the Pacific Coast pueblo magico of Todos Santos.

Marinas

The projected 2o18 opening of the Four Seasons Los Cabos on the region’s scenic East Cape will be accompanied by the unveiling of yet another marina, adding to a collection that already includes world-class, mega yacht accessible nautical facilities in Cabo San Lucas and Puerto Los Cabos (a luxury development located just outside San Jose del Cabo, and the site of the area’s first Ritz-Carlton).

Event Centers

The proliferation of high-profile special events in recent years was made possible by two new state-of-the-art facilities:  the Convention Center in San Jose, built to house the G-20 economic summit of world leaders in 2012; and the Pabellon Cultural de la Republica in San Lucas, which premiered in 2010 and now showcases the annual red carpet opening of the Los Cabos International Film Festival. The former hosted U.S. President Barack Obama, Russian President Vladimir Putin and German Chancellor Angela Merkel, the latter Star Wars alumni Liam Neeson and Ewan McGregor, among other Hollywood luminaries.
