The Sabor a Cabo Food and Wine Festival Is Still Months Away, But Beer Fest Los Cabos Is On Tap Soon

Some things are worth waiting for…and if you love great food, great music, and most of all Los Cabos, Sabor a Cabo is one of those things. It only happens once a year, but brings together chefs from over 60 top local restaurants to a spectacular seaside locale, where their palate pleasing creations are paired with artisanal beer, wine, tequila and mezcal, as well as performances from world-renowned musicians. Past performers at the food and wine fete, for example, have included iconic soul group Earth, Wind & Fire; legendary Mexican rock n’ roll band Maná, and Grammy award winning singer-songwriter Lila Downs.

This year’s version of Sabor a Cabo, the 14th annual, isn’t scheduled until Nov. 30. Hence the waiting…which in addition to heightening the anticipation, gives prospective attendees plenty of time to acquire one of the 3000 or so available tickets.

But for those who want to do something other than wait this October, Sabor a Cabo has thoughtfully provided a warm-up. A taster; that being Beer Fest Los Cabos, which is scheduled for October 12 at the Cultural Pavilion (Pabellón Cultural) overlooking the Cabo San Lucas Marina. Like Sabor a Cabo, Beer Fest is sponsored by CANIRAC, the Los Cabos restaurant association.

Traditionally, in fact, a beer fest and rural food and wine tasting have been affiliated events that accompany the marquee attraction that is Sabor a Cabo. Meaning, not only are they all sponsored by the same group, they take place around the same time. This year, however, that’s not exactly the case. Sabor a Cabo will still be followed by a gastronomic week ending in a rural food and wine event that shows off the area’s farm-to-table goodness, but the Beer Fest is no longer part of the week-long festivities. It’s on its own, still sponsored by Sabor a Cabo, but occupying a unique place on the Los Cabos event calendar.

Best of all, it’s coming soon.

Indeed, in only two more weeks, residents and visitors alike can sample craft brew goodness at the 5th annual Beer Fest Los Cabos, a celebration of regional products that doubles as a complete lifestyle experience, featuring offerings from local restaurants, artisanal Mexican liquors and cocktails, traditional music, and full access to the same cultural venue known for hosting ballet recitals and historical lectures.

If you’re a beer lover and thinking you now know the exact dates you want to include on your next vacation…hold that thought.

Because there is also a second beer focused event in Los Cabos this October: Rock & Brews Beer Fest, held at the restaurant of that name at Plaza del Pescador in San Jose del Cabo on October 18th and 19th.

Rock & Brews, for the uninitiated, is the restaurant chain founded by KISS rock stars Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley. But it isn’t just rock n’ roll that will go along with the dancing and drinking at Rock & Brews Beer Fest, but also music as diverse as Pop and Cuban Salsa.

Sponsors for the lively San Jose del Cabo event–also the 5th annual–include Baja Brewing Company, the first microbrewery in Baja California Sur and thus pioneers in the craft brew movement locally.

Both beer-centric events (in Cabo San Lucas and in San Jose del Cabo) are billed as family-friendly affairs that will also offer food, drinks and diversions for kids. But that’s often the case in Los Cabos. Every event, whatever its focus or reason for being, ends up being a full-fledged party, with something in it for everyone.

That’s part of the beauty of the destination. And to that we say, “Cheers!”

The Cabo Culinary Calendar – A Guide to Food Festivals in Los Cabos

Los Cabos’ ever evolving dining scene is shown off to its best advantage in the region’s increasingly packed calendar of food and wine related events, which spotlight the creativity of Los Cabos’ top chefs, but also celebrate traditional local specialties like freshly sourced seafood and organically grown fruits and vegetables.

For those seeking a true taste of Los Cabos – from food festivals in cape cities Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo to fairs and fiestas in Todos Santos and beyond – here’s a basic guide to the biggest events on the local culinary calendar:

Summer Harvest Festivals

Each July, when the pitahaya ripens, the residents of the small organic farming community Miraflores (in English, “Behold the Flowers”) celebrate with a lively weekend harvest festival. Pitahayas are a fruit derived from the organ pipe cactus, and are extraordinarily rich in antioxidants, which may account for the legendary longevity of Miraflores residents.

Pitahayas were the favorite food of the region’s indigenous inhabitants, the Pericues, and thus also have a strong cultural and historical component. This year’s “feria” is coming up soon – July 13 to 15 – and will include the crowning of a festival queen, a pitahaya gathering contest, and a vast array of food and drink, much of it featuring the region’s signature fruit.

Pitahayas may be the most emblematic fruit in Baja California Sur, but the  most ubiquitous are mangoes. You can reach up and take them off the trees at many area resorts and restaurants, and during summer months, freshly squeezed mango juice becomes a delicious daily treat for residents and visitors alike.

A trip to the annual Todos Santos Mango Festival will heighten your appreciation for what can be done in the name of this luscious tropical fruit. See if you agree with who dishes out the best Mangate, a dessert typical of the region. The 2018 edition – hosted in the state’s only pueblo magico, one hour north of Cabo San Lucas by car – takes place later this month: July 28 – 31.

Sabor a Cabo International Food & Wine Festival

The region’s biggest culinary festival, called Sabor a Cabo, is held each year in early December, and draws over 3,000 guests to an outdoor site in Los Cabos to sample food and wine, and enjoy live musical performances (past performers include Grammy winner Lila Downs, legendary Mexican rock band Mana, and elemental R&B superstars Earth, Wind & Fire). The main event – which rotates to various local venues – is always preceded by smaller auxiliary events, including a country food and wine tasting that shows off the area’s incredible organically grown produce and fresh local seafood. Dates for the 13th edition will be announced later this year. In the meantime, you can sample the wares from the festival’s 50 to 60 participating chefs by having dinner at virtually any fine restaurant in Los Cabos.

Cheese & Wine Festival and Sheraton Grand Hacienda del Mar

Each year – typically in March – Sheraton Grand’s luxurious Hacienda del Mar resort transforms its Salon Hacienda ballroom for a mammoth tasting celebration of cheese and wine. Live music accompanies the enormous selection of internationally representative quesos y vinos, with all ticket proceeds going to benefit the Los Cabos Children’s Foundation.

Sabores de Baja Festival in Miraflores

The small town of Miraflores is notable for several reasons, including the unusual longevity of its residents and its annual summer harvest festival celebrating pitahayas, the favorite fruit of the area’s indigenous inhabitants. Mainly, though, it is known as the foremost organic farming community in the Los Cabos municipality, the place the region’s best restaurants go to source their produce. It’s the perfect place, in other words, to host an organic food festival that focuses on the traditional cuisine and culture of Los Cabos. Sabores de Baja (sabores translates as tastes or flavors) is expected to return for its 3rd annual edition in April 2019.

Gastrovino Baja Food & Wine Festival

Aside from the annual Sabor a Cabo shindig in Los Cabos, Gastrovino is the biggest food and wine festival in Baja California Sur. Held each April or May in the state’s only pueblo magico, Todos Santos, Gastrovino is organized by the owners of a local wine and olive oil shop called La Bodega de Todos Santos, and features a weekend chockablock with tantalizing tasting opportunities. The pairing dinner at legendary Hotel California is one of many recurring highlights, but the “Big Cheese,” so to speak, is the Sunday main event on the town square. There, dozens of wineries from Baja’s Valle de Guadalupe share their palate-pleasing wares, as do many of the region’s best restaurants. Live music is also a staple, as is a silent auction to benefit local programs for children.

Taco Fest Los Cabos at Casa Dorada

Los Cabos’ top chefs converge on the luxurious beachfront Casa Dorada resort each April, where they compete to produce the most delicious variation of Mexico’s signature comfort food: the taco. The winners are traditionally the guests, who get to sample creative taco entries from some of the area’s most talented culinary craftsmen. Live music is also featured

The World Through Rosé Colored Glasses: Wine Tasting in Los Cabos

Los Cabos has come a long way since its early days as a tourist destination, when the primary draws were big-game fishing and Cabo San Lucas’ boisterous late-night party scene. In recent years, the area has become increasingly more sophisticated, adding pampering spas, upscale boutiques and first-class restaurants with dedicated wine programs to its portfolio of attractions.

The explosion of interest in Baja California’s wine country – northern Baja grape growing valleys like Valle de Guadalupe produce over 90% of Mexico’s table wines – has translated to vastly expanded wine lists at area restaurants, many of which now specialize in pairing regional food and wines.

Here are four local restaurants where the wines are every bit the equal of the fine cuisine.

Sunset da Mona Lisa

The views are so spectacular that the food and wine rarely get their due. Located in the tourist corridor, overlooking famed surf beach Playa Monumentos, this restaurant hugs the water’s edge, and offers magnificent views of the sun setting over the evocative granite monuments at Land’s End. So romantic are the views that the restaurant has had to hire a full-time wedding coordinator. But the Italian cuisine and fresh local seafood (the restaurant has its own fishing boats) are also superb, and the recently added Taittinger Terrace Oyster and Champagne Bar adds yet another level of seaside romance and world-class wine service.

El Farallon

This may be the one restaurant in Los Cabos that can match Sunset da Mona Lisa for romantic amenities and sheer jaw-dropping views. Set on a cliffside above crashing Pacific Ocean waves at the best resort in Cabo San Lucas, The Resort at Pedregal, El Farallon serves up market style seafood in truly remarkable surroundings. And like Sunset da Mona Lisa, it has added a Champagne Terrace in recent years to up the ante for what was already a breathtaking dining experience. Don’t worry about figuring out the proper cheese pairings. Sommeliers are there to help.

Pitahayas

When it comes to large, well-stocked wine cellars, Chef Volker Romeike is a pioneer. Of course, the chef is more famous for pioneering pan-Asian fusion cuisine at his scenically set restaurant, Pitahayas, at Sheraton’s Grand Hacienda del Mar. There, diners enjoy piquant dishes incorporating elements from countries as disparate as Mexico, the U.S., China, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Thailand, and the Philippines. Oenophiles, however, will be most impressed with La Cava de Santiago, the wine cellar and dining area that is home to 400 labels from premier domestic and international producers.

Solomon’s Landing

Solomon’s excels at monthly wine pairing events. Truth be told, though, Solomon’s excels at everything. What was originally a modest taco stand some 20 plus years ago has flourished under the ownership of Brian Solomon to become one of the must-visit meal destinations on the Cabo San Lucas Marina. Seafood is the New Orleans trained chef’s specialty, but Solomon’s serves up delicious food of all kinds morning, noon and night. But the best time to experience the restaurant’s unique approach to fine dining is during the monthly wine pairing dinners, when bottles from the generously stocked, climate controlled cellar are paired with some of the chef’s signature dishes.
