Food Festivals, Fishing Tournaments & Other Fiestas: November Events in Los Cabos

No month shines brighter than November when it comes to signature Los Cabos events. The region’s most glamorous event, the Los Cabos International Film Festival, once again promises red carpet celebrity sightings, as well as some of the best of contemporary North American cinema. The finest of fine dining will also be on display as dozens of the top chefs in Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo gather for the area’s biggest food and wine festival, Sabor a Cabo. And of course there are fishing tournaments galore, abundant cultural to-dos, and iconic Mexican holidays like Day of the Dead.

In other words, while there’s never really a bad time to visit Los Cabos, it’s hard to find a better time than November.

Dia de Muertos – November 1 – 2

Mexico observes many holidays, but none quite so visually distinctive and emotionally resonant as El Dia de Muertos (Day of the Dead). This holiday to honor deceased family and friends dates back to the time of the Aztecs–who dedicated a festival to Mictecacihuatl, queen of the underworld, each August–but now takes place contemporaneously with the Catholic observance of Allhallowtide. Traditionally, it is thought that the souls of children return on November 1st, and the souls of adults on November 2nd. Families will often build ofrendas (altars) in their homes, welcoming back the spirits of the departed with some of their favorite food and drinks, as well as special holiday themed items like cempasuchil flowers (Aztec marigolds), calaveras de azucar (candy skulls), and a sweet bread called pan de muerto. The most famous calavera, an elegantly costumed skeleton named Catrina, was created in the early 20th century by illustrator Jose Guadalupe Posada. Catrina figures are commonly seen around Los Cabos during the Day of the Dead observances, as are a few public ofrendas.

Baja Ha-Ha Cruisers Rally – November 3 – 16

The funniest book every written about the Baja California peninsula and its idiosyncratic residents was the work of a Western Outdoor News columnist and all-around fine writer named Fred Hoctor. The book, called Baja Haha, was published in 1984 and has been something of a cult classic among gringo expats ever since. Sadly, Señor Hoctor is no longer with us, but his title and off-kilter humor lives on in the form of Baja Ha-Ha, a 750-mile cruisers rally from San Diego to Cabo San Lucas that began in the early 1990s and celebrates its 26th anniversary this year, from November 3rd to 16th. Cruising the Baja coast isn’t inherently funny in itself. Rather, it’s the safe but lighthearted approach of the participants, led by their “Grand Poobah,” that make the rally special. Since the inaugural event, over 3,000 boats and 10,000 sailors have participated. Seagoing vessels between 27’ and 100’ in length are eligible, and can look forward to two scheduled stops along the way, at Tortuga and Santa Maria Bays, before reaching Cabo San Lucas.

21st Annual WON Los Cabos Tuna Jackpot Tournament – November 6 – 9

The Western Outdoor News has a long history with Los Cabos, dating back to the 1950s, when Baja columnist Ray Cannon’s rave fishing reviews helped put the area on the destination travel map. The WON Tuna Jackpot is one of the larger fishing tournaments in Cabo San Lucas, a fixture of the autumn sporting calendar that follows hard on the heels of the Los Cabos Billfish and Bisbee’s Los Cabos Offshore and Black & Blue Tournaments. Last year’s event, the 20th edition, saw 163 boats compete for over $841,600 in prize money. Even bigger things are expected this year.

 San Jose del Cabo Art Walk – November 7, 14, 21, 28

The historic Distrito del Arte in San Jose del Cabo takes center stage each Thursday evening during high tourist season–November through June–when residents and visitors alike are invited to stroll its cobblestone streets and peruse the many eclectic fine arts galleries. Art Walk hours are 5 to 9 p.m., when the neighborhood comes alive with wine, cheese and guided tours, as well as colorful street artists and strolling mariachis.

 

Los Cabos International Film Festival – November 13 to 17

 

The Los Cabos International Film Festival returns for its 8th edition on November 13th, with an inaugural red carpet gala and screening at the Pabellon Cultural de la Republica in Cabo San Lucas. The celebrity and paparazzi studded galas receive much of the attention, but the heart of the festival consists of curated screenings at Cinemex Theaters at Puerto Paraiso, and behind the scenes conferences and programs designed to promote mutually beneficial collaborations between the North American film industries. Thus, the LCIFF’s long-running tagline: “Come See What the Neighbors Are Doing.” There will be plenty of star power this year, however. The biggest confirmed attendee so far is legendary actor and two-time Academy Award winner Robert De Niro, who will appear in conjunction with the Latin American premiere of director Martin Scorsese’s new film, The Irishman, in which De Niro stars opposite fellow screen icons Al Pacino and Joe Pesci.

Sabor a Cabo International Food and Wine Festival – November 30

This is the biggest food and wine festival in Los Cabos, annually drawing over 3,000 attendees for a huge outdoor party at one of the area’s most picturesque locales. Food is the undoubted focus, with delicious dishes served up from over 60 of the best local chefs. But beverages also get their due, as top tequilas and mezcals are showcased, as well as regional wines from Baja’s Valle de Guadalupe. Entertainment, too, is presented on a grand scale; past performers include Grammy winner Lila Downs, Mexican supergroup Maná, and funk legends Earth, Wind & Fire. This year’s 14th annual “Taste of Cabo” will take place November 30 at Club Campestre Golf Club, site of several earlier fêtes. The musical headliner will be another multiple time Grammy winner, Madrid born singer Alejandro Sanz.

Los Cabos Fishing Report – October 27, 2019

Busy times now in Los Cabos, peak fall tourist season, attracting hundreds of anglers from around the world, many of them participating in some of the world’s richest fishing tournaments, where pay outs can be in the millions of dollars. Weather settled down, perfect all around conditions, clear sunny skies, slightly brisk now early mornings, though days are still quite warm. Ocean swells minimal, with moderate variable breezes, shifting to the typical fall pattern, off the land, from the west early, then switching later out of the northeast, Ocean water temperature ranged 82 to 85 degrees from the Pacific and up past Los Frailes, or in the direction of the Sea of Cortez.

Sportfishing fleets and tournament participants are scouting out all directions, searching all possible options. Majority of local charters are now concentrating on the grounds from the Gordo Banks to Iman, San Luis and some venturing as far as Vinorama. Heavy pressure always means various bait options can become limited due to unavailable resource. Though this week with patience there seemed to be sufficient supplies of sardinas, slabs of squid and caballito. Sardinas were scarcer near the marina jetty’s and are now seen schooling off of Chileno, which means long back track for local bait vendors, as well as later start for anglers, if they want this bait option. Other anglers are going early, directly with squid and then some are catching chihuil on certain high spots, which proved to be probably the best chance now at hooking into a wahoo. Sardinas and the squid were best choice for finding any yellowfin tuna action. Dorado became very scattered, saw very few this week, not many billfish from the standard charters, more sailfish than others, a higher percentage of anglers were preferring to target wahoo or tuna.

Yellowfin tuna were found in recent days on the San Luis Bank, drift fishing with various baits, mainly sardinas and strips of squid. Yellowfin tuna to over 100 lb. were caught,  the majority of the tuna hooked into were in the 60 to 90 lb. class, no big numbers, but later in the week this bite did improve, some anglers later a couple of quality tuna. Only a handful of football sized yellowfin most were quality grade, of course lots of black skipjack and bonito to fight with.

Not many wahoo seemed to want the trolled lures, this week live bait proved best, particularly off of Vinorama, finding the live chihuil baitfish was not always an east guarantee. AS is the normal case, many more wahoo strikes were lost compared to actual fish landed. With the water temperature now still so warm, we expect wahoo action to be even better through next couple of months.

The a whole lot of bottom action even being attempted now, on and off currents and really nothing big happening, more triggerfish, bonito and smaller sized snapper.

The combined sportfishing fleet launching out of the panga area from Puerto Los Cabos Marina sent out an estimated 110 charters for the week and anglers reported an approximate fish count of: 4 sailfish, 5 striped marlin, 88 yellowfin tuna, 9 dorado, 68 wahoo, 12 leopard grouper, 35 Mexican bonito, 19 yellow snapper, 3 dogtooth snapper, 4 pompano, 8 sierra, 6 spotted rose snapper, 12 rainbow runner, 8 Pacific golden eyed tilefish and 80 triggerfish.

Los Cabos Fishing Report October 13, 2019

Increasing numbers of anglers are arriving each day, in the next couple of weeks the crowds of the fall season crowds will be peaking. Weather is now transitioning, noticeably cooler early mornings, though days are still warm, very humid, more tropical cloud cover and over the weekend major rain squalls, We saw wide varying ocean conditions this week, from flat glass, no breeze at all, to swirling winds and choppy seas.

The fishing action was almost as unpredictable as the wither patterns. One day very few fish would cooperate, next day we had great action for the elusive wahoo, then the yellowfin tuna action became more active, dorado were spotty, but some nice schools were occasionally encountered, at times close to shore, others further offshore. On Friday, legendary La Playita local pangero Hugo Pino brought in a yellowfin that weighed in at 264 lb., impressive cow, first of this class we have heard about this season off of the Gordo Banks, the tuna hit on a live skipjack. On Saturday local super panga skipper Chame Pino landed a 111 lb. tuna

Through most of the week the more consistent all around action was near Iman Bank, also north to San Luis and Vinorama. Sardinas were now being netted ear the marina jetty, already becoming more limited as season becomes busier, ballyhoo was a great option for wahoo, slabs of squid were using for drift fishing for the tuna, caballito were another option. A few charters were searching for chihuil, which were ideal for wahoo, when obtainable. Through mid-week the wahoo went on a great bite, fish to over 40 lb., striking trolled Rapalas, skirted lead heads and various baits. Rigged ballyhoo proved to work especially well. Some charters had as many as four wahoo, while losing other strikes. Things can happen quickly with these speedsters are aggressive.

Yellow tuna action was mainly centered on Iman Ban, but this week a handful of nicer quality tuna came off of the Gordo Banks. Bite was spotty from day to day, as currents and water clarity was fluctuating, best bet for the yellowfin seemed to be drift fishing with sardinas, squid and also slow trolling smaller sized skipjack. We saw yellowfin tuna this week from football sized, all the way up to cows of 264 lb. most tuna we are seeing were in the 15 to 70 lb. range.

Dorado became more scattered that they had been, though there are some decent schools of these fish being found, of the fish we did see, we saw more respectable sized 10 to 20 lb. specimens.

We heard of more striped marlin activity out of Cabo San Lucas, though on the grounds off of San Jose del Cabo and towards the north there was some striped marlin and a few sailfish reported.

Off the bottom there was no consistent bite going on, a scattering of pargo, snapper, cabrilla, bonito and the highlight were several dogtooth snapper up to 45 lb., we have not seen many of those fish this season.

The combined sportfishing fleet launching out of the panga area from Puerto Los Cabos Marina sent out an estimated 110 charters for the week and anglers reported an approximate fish count of: 1 sailfish, 6 striped marlin, 68 yellowfin tuna, 29 dorado, 47 wahoo, 7 leopard grouper, 8 Mexican bonito, 8 yellow snapper, 3 dogtooth snapper, 2 barred pargo, 3 pompano, 6 sierra, 4 amberjack, 4 surgeon fish and 95 triggerfish.

Seven Days of Dining Delights During San Jose del Cabo Restaurant Week

Cape cities Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo each have their own unique charms. Cabo San Lucas, for instance, is where you go if you want to experience world-class fishing or boisterous nightlife. San Jose del Cabo, on the other hand, is better known for more sophisticated attractions like culture and cuisine.

Speaking of the latter, the foremost cultural event in San Jose del Cabo–its seasonal Thursday night Art Walk–doesn’t resume until November, so in the meantime, the city is focusing on its renowned culinary scene with a weeklong celebration featuring 41 of its finest restaurants. That would be the second annual San Jose del Cabo Restaurant Week, which takes center stage from October 19th to 26th.

What makes this week different from any other, one might ask? For starters, all participating restaurants will be offering special three-course prix fixe dinner menus for only 800 pesos (approximately $40 U.S.) per person throughout the week.

That’s more than one might expect to pay at a local taquería, of course, but a veritable bargain for a night out at one of the city’s benchmark restaurants.

The most iconic of all San Jose del Cabo restaurants are undoubtedly the trio of farm-to-fork eateries found in the small community of Animas Bajas, just minutes outside the historic center of the city.  Acre, Los Tamarindos and Flora’s Field Kitchen not only grow all their own produce and source meat and fish from local sources, they also serve up their fresh fare in congenial outdoor surroundings, with tables set amid farm fields with views of rolling foothills and distant mountains. All three are considered to be among the best restaurants in the country, and two–Acre and Los Tamarindos–are participating in Restaurant Week… meaning visitors can sample their superb artisanal food and drinks at a rare budget-friendly price.

Those less interested in haute cuisine than comfort food will find plenty to like as well. Pizzas are readily available from Neapolitan-themed Pan di Bacco, and pastas from Italian specialists La Dolce, La Forchetta, and Macca Pasta Bar. Mesquite grilled American style hamburgers, meanwhile, headline the offerings from Barrio Burger; and the region’s first microbrewery, Baja Brewing Company, also has great food and drinks on tap.

But even that’s barely scratching the surface. There are vegan options; Japanese and Chinese cuisine fare; Latin American street food; traditional Mexican fare from Jazmin’s and Mi Casa; barefoot beachfront burritos and margaritas from the East Cape’s picturesque Buzzard’s Grill; upscale hotel dining at Café des Artistes at the JW Marriott and Hotel El Ganzo; fresh local seafood galore; and much, much more.

Several restaurants will also celebrate their anniversaries during Restaurant Week in San Jose del Cabo. Mi Cocina, for example, the gorgeous courtyard restaurant at boutique hotel Casa Natalia, will celebrate its 20th anniversary as a downtown fine dining standout with a special dinner party on Thursday, October 24th.

All proceeds benefit the benefit the Biblioteca Pablo L Martinez, a library named in honor of the late great chronicler of local history.

Fishing Takes Center Stage: October Events in Los Cabos

October is a big month in Los Cabos. Not only does it signal the traditional start of high-tourist season, but the start of high fishing season as well. Three of Cabo San Lucas’ biggest fishing tournaments take place in October, including the biggest of them all: Bisbee’s Black & Blue. High stakes and huge payouts are the norm in October, a tradition that also can be seen on Los Cabos’ picturesque East Cape, which is home to a high-powered tuna shootout.

Cabo San Lucas also hosts visitors from around the globe in October for Sammy Hagar’s Birthday Bashes at Cabo Wabo Cantina. The Red Rocker is the celebrity most associated with the Land’s End city, but many more join him for this annual series of concerts at the iconic downtown nightclub.

Sammy Hagar’s 72nd Birthday Bashes at Cabo Wabo Cantina – Oct. 9, 11, 13

Every year since 1990, loyal “Redheads” from around the world have flocked to Cabo San Lucas for Sammy Hagar’s Birthday Bashes at Cabo Wabo Cantina. In 2019, the former Van Halen and Montrose celebrates his 72nd year on the planet with an all-star cast of visiting musicians, including The Circle members Michael Anthony, Jason Bonham, and Vic Johnson. Shows are scheduled for October 9, 11 and 13. General admission tickets are available to winners of a random drawing, but those who aren’t selected will still have an opportunity to attend. Some dinner show tickets will be made available in early October on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Los Cabos Billfish Tournament – Oct. 13 – 17

Just as September is El Mes de la Patria, the “the country’s month,” in México, October is the month of the fishing tournament in Cabo San Lucas. Bisbee’s two cash-rich tournaments–the Los Cabos Offshore and Black & Blue–get most of the publicity, but the Los Cabos Billfish Tournament also sends out a siren call to big-game fishermen eager for big-money prizes and jackpots. The three tournaments combined last year to pay out over $5,500,925. The 21st annual LCBT has three entry levels: a $5,000 base entry for each 6-person team; daily jackpots for the largest tuna, wahoo and dorado; and daily billfish release jackpots. Optional marlin only jackpots are available to teams that paid base entry (this year with two levels). Registration and the post-tournament gala awards ceremony will both be hosted by Playa Grande, a Solmar Group resort.

Bisbee’s Los Cabos Offshore – October 17 – 20

Commonly known as “Little Bisbee’s,” to differentiate it from the “Big Bisbee’s” Black & Blue marlin fishing tournament that also takes place each October in Los Cabos, the Los Cabos Offshore dates back to 2002, and is considered a more laid-back, charity focused endeavor than the Black & Blue. That said, The LCO joined rarified company last year when its overall payouts exceeded one million dollars ($1,165,000 to be exact), making it one of the very few tournaments ever to reach that elite benchmark. Cash prizes are awarded to the teams with the three biggest qualifying fish in the game and billfish categories at the LCO, with thousands of meals donated to local families in need. Base entry for teams is $1,500 U.S., with $17,000 necessary for “across the board” entry in all jackpots and challenges.

Bisbee’s Black & Blue – October 22 – 26

Oft billed as “The World’s Richest Fishing Tournament,” thanks to its million dollar payouts, this marlin fishing tournament originally premiered in 1981, and remains to this day the highest profile annual event in Los Cabos. Base entry for this millionaire maker is $5,000 U.S. per team, and requires a $71,500 U.S. outlay across all categories, jackpots and challenges. Prizes are awarded for the top five catches of black and blue marlin, assuming they meet the minimum standards (300 lbs.).

Van Wormer Resort Tuna Shootout – Oct. 26

One-day fishing shootouts are a tradition on the East Cape, at least where Van Wormer Resorts are concerned. Van Wormer hosts a dorado shootout each July in which the winner takes home a new car (or in 2019, a Volkswagen Amarok pickup track). The winners of the October tuna shootout, the 7th edition of which takes place Oct. 26, won’t get anything nearly as flashy as that. Just cold hard cash. The largest tuna caught on the day in question will earn one lucky team of anglers approximately $35,000. Base entry is only $500 and in addition to participation covers dinner at the awards ceremony at Hotel Palmas de Cortez in Los Barriles. Second and third place will also share in the over $100,000 in total payouts, with jackpots and raffle and drawing prizes also up for grabs.

The Sabor a Cabo Food and Wine Festival Is Still Months Away, But Beer Fest Los Cabos Is On Tap Soon

Some things are worth waiting for…and if you love great food, great music, and most of all Los Cabos, Sabor a Cabo is one of those things. It only happens once a year, but brings together chefs from over 60 top local restaurants to a spectacular seaside locale, where their palate pleasing creations are paired with artisanal beer, wine, tequila and mezcal, as well as performances from world-renowned musicians. Past performers at the food and wine fete, for example, have included iconic soul group Earth, Wind & Fire; legendary Mexican rock n’ roll band Maná, and Grammy award winning singer-songwriter Lila Downs.

This year’s version of Sabor a Cabo, the 14th annual, isn’t scheduled until Nov. 30. Hence the waiting…which in addition to heightening the anticipation, gives prospective attendees plenty of time to acquire one of the 3000 or so available tickets.

But for those who want to do something other than wait this October, Sabor a Cabo has thoughtfully provided a warm-up. A taster; that being Beer Fest Los Cabos, which is scheduled for October 12 at the Cultural Pavilion (Pabellón Cultural) overlooking the Cabo San Lucas Marina. Like Sabor a Cabo, Beer Fest is sponsored by CANIRAC, the Los Cabos restaurant association.

Traditionally, in fact, a beer fest and rural food and wine tasting have been affiliated events that accompany the marquee attraction that is Sabor a Cabo. Meaning, not only are they all sponsored by the same group, they take place around the same time. This year, however, that’s not exactly the case. Sabor a Cabo will still be followed by a gastronomic week ending in a rural food and wine event that shows off the area’s farm-to-table goodness, but the Beer Fest is no longer part of the week-long festivities. It’s on its own, still sponsored by Sabor a Cabo, but occupying a unique place on the Los Cabos event calendar.

Best of all, it’s coming soon.

Indeed, in only two more weeks, residents and visitors alike can sample craft brew goodness at the 5th annual Beer Fest Los Cabos, a celebration of regional products that doubles as a complete lifestyle experience, featuring offerings from local restaurants, artisanal Mexican liquors and cocktails, traditional music, and full access to the same cultural venue known for hosting ballet recitals and historical lectures.

If you’re a beer lover and thinking you now know the exact dates you want to include on your next vacation…hold that thought.

Because there is also a second beer focused event in Los Cabos this October: Rock & Brews Beer Fest, held at the restaurant of that name at Plaza del Pescador in San Jose del Cabo on October 18th and 19th.

Rock & Brews, for the uninitiated, is the restaurant chain founded by KISS rock stars Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley. But it isn’t just rock n’ roll that will go along with the dancing and drinking at Rock & Brews Beer Fest, but also music as diverse as Pop and Cuban Salsa.

Sponsors for the lively San Jose del Cabo event–also the 5th annual–include Baja Brewing Company, the first microbrewery in Baja California Sur and thus pioneers in the craft brew movement locally.

Both beer-centric events (in Cabo San Lucas and in San Jose del Cabo) are billed as family-friendly affairs that will also offer food, drinks and diversions for kids. But that’s often the case in Los Cabos. Every event, whatever its focus or reason for being, ends up being a full-fledged party, with something in it for everyone.

Celebrating Birthday Season in Cabo San Lucas

The biggest birthday in Cabo San Lucas this October is that of the Land’s End city itself, which turns 478 years young on October 18th. That’s right. Despite the fact that the tourist age only began about 50 years ago, everyone’s favorite getaway spot on the southernmost rim of the Baja California peninsula has a history that goes back much further. Much, much further.

The written history of Cabo San Lucas began in 1541 when Spanish sea captain Francisco de Bolaños, patrolling the area under the orders of explorer Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo and conquistador-in-chief Hernan Cortes, discovered the future vacation destination and named it according to the Catholic calendar…October 18th being the official feast day of Saint Luke. Before Bolaños showed up, the place was simply referred to as Ballenas (the Spanish word for whales) on nautical charts.

Each year to honor its birth a series of local events are held in Cabo San Lucas, including a parade down the main street of Marina Blvd. Such festivities are common in Spanish speaking countries, where they’re called fiestas tradicionales. But in Cabo San Lucas these events are little publicized and draw scant interest from tourists.

October’s other notable birthday, on the other hand, is a very big deal…so big in fact that it draws visitors from around the globe.

That would be the birthday of Sammy Hagar, of course. “The Red Rocker” helped to put Cabo San Lucas on the map–just as surely as Bolaños did before him–when he opened Cabo Wabo Cantina with his then Van Halen bandmates back in 1990, turning “Cabo” into a popular Spring Break destination almost overnight. Hagar’s annual birthday bashes have been a tradition ever since, and continue to sell out months in advance, as they did again this year.

Little wonder that the competition for tickets is fierce. Hagar is rock n’ roll royalty, after all, and has been a star since he first joined Montrose in 1973. He eventually went solo, charting hits like There’s Only One Way to Rock and I Can’t Drive 55 before cycling through a series of supergroups, from Van Halen to Chickenfoot.

Hagar is also Los Cabos royalty, the celebrity figure most associated with life at Land’s End.

Hagar first heard of Los Cabos when he was reading about Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards’ marriage in a music magazine, and he began making plans for his own club soon after his initial visit. He opened Cabo Wabo Cantina with Van Halen in 1990, famously premiering the new Land’s End bar and restaurant with a massive promotional assist from MTV. The Van Halen partnership eventually dissolved–both musically and in Cabo Wabo–even as Hagar steered the venture toward enormous success.

In 1996, Cabo Wabo spun off its own house brand of tequila, likewise known as Cabo Wabo. A scant 11 years later, Hagar was able to sell 80% of his stake in the spirit to the Campari Group, cashing out with a cool $80 million.

The cantina has also proved popular, so much so that additional locations have been opened in Las Vegas, Hollywood and Lake Tahoe. The upshot of this continued success is that Hagar is now as much a business magnate as famous musician, recently adding rum and branded beach bars to his ever growing portfolio.

But Cabo Wabo Cantina is the place that started it all, and it’s where Hagar has celebrated his birthday for 28 of the past 29 years (excepting 2014, when an ill-timed hurricane necessitated a move to Las Vegas).

The tradition continues this year as Hagar turns 72. He’ll headline birthday bashes on Oct. 9, 11 and 13 with his group The Circle, and big-name cameos are almost a given. Although tickets are officially sold out and have been since July, a few first-come first-serve dinner show tickets are always made available. This year, they go on sale at noon on the day before each show, ensuring lines around the block.

And why not? “There’s only one way to rock”, and one place, too:  That’s in Cabo San Lucas this October.

Los Cabos Fishing Report – June 23, 2019

Well the summer season is now officially here, local weather patterns are steadily warming, some scattered morning cloud cover, quickly burning off as the sun rises higher into the sky, daytime highs reaching 90 degrees. We noticed more crowds of family vacationers arriving, taking advantage of early summer vacation time. Winds were lighter, mainly picking up from the south later in the day. Ocean water temperatures has quickly rebounded back near the 80 degree mark in the direction of San Jose del Cabo and further north. Also clarity is much cleaner on these same grounds in the direction of the Sea of Cortez, while the Pacific still remains greenish and much cooler.

In and around the marina area the bait vendors are finding caballito, mullet and some moonfish, other bait options has been strips of squid and ballyhoo, as well as some bolito and smaller sized black skipjack on the offshore fishing grounds. Anglers are also using yo-yo style jigs for a mix of some bottom action.

Sportfishing fleets are mainly concentrating on the grounds from the Iman to San Luis Bank, not much found on the scouting trips to the Gordo Banks, besides shark and a few billfish. The more productive action has been switching back and forth daily, some days San Luis, others on the Iman. Drift fishing for yellowfin tuna with strips of squid, as well as slow trolling live baits, has resulting in yellowfin tuna catches, fish ranged in sizes from 15 lb. to 80 lb. No big numbers, most boats were having at least a chance or two, some charters landing as many as three or four tuna, the best action seemed to be earlier in the morning.

These same grounds were producing an occasional dorado, a few nicer sized bulls over 25 lb. were accounted for, but only a scattered fish or two, at least we are seeing these prized fighting and popular gamefish present in local waters, they had been absent for a long time during the cooler winter and spring seasons.

The same areas where these surface species are being encountered, there have been options off the bottom while drift fishing with various baits and using the yo-yo style jigs. There were a few variety of grouper, pompano, amberjack, red snapper, yellow snapper, bonito and others on these rocky high spots. All of these being excellent table fare.

All along the beach stretches now is a great time for slowing baits for roosterfish, now the peak season for these gamefish, good chances at hooking into fish over 40 lb., even to 50 and 60 lb. Remember that this species is known for their prized fighting capabilities, not for eating quality, these fishing should always be released, care should be taken while taking a quick photo for documentation of the catch before releasing.

Striped marlin are scattered throughout the area now, right around the Iman bank and towards the Gordo Banks, no huge concentrations, but if you are interested in catching one of these fish, the odds are fairly high now that you find opportunity. Most of the stripers are now averaging 70 to 120 lb. Will not be long until we start seeing the larger blue and black marlin showing up in the warmer summer currents.

The combined sportfishing fleet launching out of the panga area from Puerto Los Cabos Marina sent out an estimated 78 charters for the week and anglers reported an approximate fish count of: 14 striped, 9 dorado, 48 yellowfin tuna, 3 dogtooth snapper, 8 leopard grouper, 4 African pompano, 180 Mexican bonito, 34 red snapper, 12 yellow snapper, 13 amberjack, 44 roosterfish, 14 jack crevalle and 70 triggerfish.

Los Cabos Fishing Report – May 26, 2019

May weather has been ideal, seems that it has not become too warm yet, a little cooler than we can normally feel this close to summer time. Actually about the perfect climate now, lows about 65 degrees, highs averaging in the lower 80’s, very few clouds, sunny and dry. Crowds of anglers are moderate now, great time for a visit, with some eating fish being brought in. Early in the week we saw currents from the north push in water that was in the 78/70 degree range, later in the week it was holding more in the 74/76 range. Much of the week we felt north winds, this limited at times where charters went, later towards the weekend winds laid down. With changing currents, also this pushed in slightly greenish off colored waters. Transition period has been unsettled for weeks now, eventually conditions will heat up and we will see some more stable patterns.

Bait vendors are finding moonfish, jacks and some sardineta, also options of ballyhoo. The most consistent action being found was over the structure, boats are working areas from off of Red Hill/Palmilla, Gordo Banks. Cardon, La Fortuna, San Luis, north to Vinorama. Some of the best action was very early on the San Luis Banks, anglers working yo-yo jigs did very well for red snapper (huachinango), these fish were quality, average of 5 to 12 lb. Good number of The Mexican bonito as well, also over the various rocky areas there were some amberjack and grouper species found, we saw amberjack up to 70 pounds, most were in the 10 to 30 lb. range. Yellowtail action died off, but some could still happen with that, lots of sharks were moving in around the Gordo Banks, some days sea lions were a bad problem as well.

A handful of striped marlin were hooked into, boat the off colored changing currents, combined with passing of the full moon,  this seemed to spread this action out, scattered activity for billfish, surely will rebound as soon as water conditions become more favorable. No dorado or wahoo being talked about, though there were some yellowfin tuna accounted for from the super pangas fishing on the northern grounds from San Luis to Vinorama, striking on cut bait and yo-yo jigs, most of these yellowfin were in the 12 to 20 lb. range.

Inshore areas just south of Palmilla, to Chileno produced good action for roosterfish, some of these to over 30 lb. Slow trolling live bait was best technique for these powerful gamefish. Also in the mix were a handful of late season sierra, as well as hog sized jack crevalle.

The combined sportfishing fleet out of the panga area from Puerto Los Cabos Marina reported an estimated 60 charters for the week and anglers reported an approximate fish count of: 4 striped marlin, 8 yellowfin tuna, 10 leopard grouper, 245 Mexican bonito, 82 red snapper, 5 yellow snapper, 7 African pompano, 5 barred pargo, 24 amberjack, 9 sierra, 12 glasseye pargo, 22 roosterfish, 10 jack crevalle and 40 triggerfish.

Los Cabos Fishing Report – March 3, 2019

Not quite as many anglers in town this week, though still a fair amount, many people arriving just to escape the cold northern weather, some of them wishing to try their luck at local fishing. Many people do not realize that most fish species do have seasons and this time frame is really not peak season for the majority of gamefish species, exception being striped marlin, sierra or snapper. It is still a great time to see whales, with plenty of these mammals around, though by months end most will be heading on their northern migration.

Weather patterns much the same, northern winds, switching to the south at times, though not as strong as they had been earlier in the winter. Once again we saw a cooling trend and greener water sweeping into the area from the north. Water temperature ranged from 68 to 72 degrees. Main bait options now have been caballito, ballyhoo, mackerel and chihuil also being found at times, another option was smaller sized skipjack and some slabs of squid as well, everything but sardinas, no signs reported for them.

Most action is being found from straight off San Jose del Cabo to the Iman Bank, some charters have scouted as far north as Vinorama. No particular location where the action has been hot from day to day. Early in the week, before the water cooled and color turned over, there were good numbers of decent sized dorado found. Most of this action was found later in the morning and very close to shore. Trolling caballito and ballyhoo worked well, some anglers used chihuil or mackerel. We actual saw a couple of dorado up in the 25 lb. range, though average was more like 10 to 12  lb. Still nice fish for the winter season. Late in the week this dorado action slowed way down, to where anglers were fortunate to find one of these fish.

Offshore action was dominated by the striped marlin, with areas straight off the PLC marina, from one to four miles, being the location where more marlin were being encountered, though stripers were also found near Iman Banks and close off of Punta Gorda. Even a sailfish was hooked into close to shore, after it was landed it was released, not a normal species in the cold water. Most stripers were striking on various trolled baits, ranging in sizes up to 120 lb. a bit larger than we had been seeing.

The yellowfin tuna bite was very spotty, only hearing of maybe one or two tuna per day being found. The cooler off colored water, combined with windy conditions, made this a tough go. Same deal for wahoo, a few smaller fish early in the week, then none, as conditions turned over.

More bottom action being tried now. Mainly small red snapper, bonito and triggerfish, we did see one 40 lb. amberjack and a handful of baqueta grouper taken off of the Gordo Banks

The combined sportfishing fleet out of the panga area from Puerto Los Cabos Marina reported an estimated 77 charters for the week and anglers reported an approximate fish count of: 24 striped marlin, 1 sailfish, 82 dorado, 9 yellowfin tuna, 3 wahoo, 102 bonito, 72 red snapper, 14 baqueta grouper, 8 leopard grouper, 5 roosterfish, 2 sheepshead, 12 jack crevalle, 6 yellow snapper, 5 barred pargo, 3 amberjack, 12 golden eyed tilefish, 6 glasseye snapper, 14 sierra and 90 triggerfish.
