Extreme Sailing Series Premieres in Los Cabos This Fall

For the first time ever, the Extreme Sailing Series is coming to Los Cabos. The upscale yachting event is

The Extreme Sailing Series 2016. Act 7. Lisbon. Portugal. 6th October 2016. Credit – Lloyd Images

scheduled to take place from Nov. 30 to Dec. 3, 2017, and looks to be a perfect fit for a region that is increasingly positioning itself as both a global travel destination and a luxury lifestyle leader.

The Extreme Sailing Series was originally founded in 2007, and has been staging high-profile events around the world ever since. One of its primary allure for sailing fans has been its ability to bring together different categories of sailors – from America’s Cup competitors and their billionaire backers to Olympic heroes and around-the-world soloists – and let them compete on an even playing surface. This has been accomplished by requiring all participants to sail the same boat, a GC32 class catamaran. These 40 foot seagoing missiles are constructed of high-tech carbon fiber (think incredibly light and incredibly strong), and capable of speeds up to 46 miles per hour across open water.

Los Cabos is the final stop on the 2017 tour, the final test of champions. Even more exciting, perhaps, is that the series is also the leading proponent of what is called stadium racing. No, there is no actual stadium involved; the concept, rather, is that all the racing action takes place within view of land (or Land’s End). Stadium racing was immediately applauded when it appeared on the scene, since traditionally fans, friends and family had only had good views of the action at the very beginning and very end of a yacht race. Stadium racing made racing much more spectator friendly, and allowed for innovations and upgrades like leader boards, VIP seating, food and beverage access, and in-race commentary.

What stadium racing means for visitors to Cabo San Lucas this fall is the equivalent of a free front row seat to one of the world’s truly big-ticket sporting events. Pack your picnic basket with organic Miraflores grown fruit, Oaxacan cheese and some fine wine from Baja’s Valle de Guadalupe, spread out a blanket along the shore, and watch as some of the world’s most expensive ships indulge in a sort of high-speed, wind-aided ballet.

Bisbee’s Set for Another Season of Turning Fishermen into Millionaires

Only one of Bisbee’s three annual Black & Blue Tournaments in Los Cabos actually turn fishermen into millionaires, but all three offer potential windfall profits while also showcasing some of the finest big-game sport fishing on the planet.

Here are the dates for anglers to target in 2017.

East Cape Offshore – August 1-5

Since premiering in 2000, Bisbee’s East Cape Offshore has become the signature fishing competition on the Los Cabos municipality’s gorgeous East Cape. Considered by many to be a throwback to the “good old days” of Baja fishing, the event rewards tuna and dorado catches as well as marlin, and is hosted by the Buena Vista Beach Resort in Buenavista. Over a half million dollars in prize money was distributed in 2016, including over $100,000 to the winners. Base entry is $1,500 per team, with an Early Bird registration deadline of June 30.

Los Cabos Offshore – October 19-22

Affectionately known as “Little Bisbee’s” to differentiate it from the “Big Bisbee’s” Black & Blue tournament that follows hard on its heels each October in Cabo San Lucas, the Los Cabos Offshore is nonetheless a significant payday for its winners:  over $772,000 was divvied up among overall and jackpot winners in 2016. The tournament is generally a more casual, charity focused affair than its “big brother,” and has been since it was added to the schedule in 2002. Primary beneficiaries of tournament largesse include a local orphanage, Casa Hogar.

Black & Blue – October 24-28

The granddaddy of them all; Bisbee’s has grown from a six-team event with $10,000 on the line in 1981, to what is now referred to…quite accurately…as “The World’s Richest Fishing Tournament,” with crowds of spectators gathering each afternoon during competition to see enormous game and billfish weighed out on the scales at Puerto Paraiso Mall on the Land’s End city’s marina boardwalk.

The overall payout of $4,165,960 in 2006 remains the largest in the history of the sport. Last year, Julio Fernandez and his Quiteña team bested 120 other boats by reeling in a 534 lb. black marlin, earning themselves a cool $2,183,000. Baja Cantina, dockside in Cabo San Lucas, remains the headquarters for the 37th edition, with the post tournament awards ceremony scheduled to take place at the affiliated Maria Corona restaurant.

August 31 is the deadline for the Early Bird drawing, which awards one free entry to the following year’s tournament. For registration information, visit www.bisbees.com.

Art Walk Celebrates History, Beauty and Culture of San Jose del Cabo

Although it has at times during its long history been eclipsed by Cabo San Lucas in terms of prestige, San Jose del Cabo has never taken a backseat to its sister city in beauty or culture.

It was at San Jose, not San Lucas, that the first Jesuit mission in Los Cabos was built in 1730. This decision was in large part due to the area’s abundant freshwater resources, which had also been drawing treasure laden galleons (and the pirates who hunted them) since colonial Spain inaugurated the Manila–Acapulco trade route in 1565.

An American explorer and government agent named J. Ross Browne visited the area in 1866, and wrote of the town: “The old mission building stands on a slight eminence about two miles from the beach, in a most beautiful part of the valley, and forms the Acropolis around which centres the pleasant little town of San Jose. A stream of pure water courses through groves of citrons and oranges on the lower slope of the hill, and luxuriant palms hang with tropical effect over the washing-places along the azequia, where the dusky damsels of the town assemble to work and gossip.”

Present day San Jose is still a place of extraordinary beauty, a fact shown to great advantage in the town’s signature seasonal event, its weekly Art Walk. Each Thursday from 5 to 9 p.m. during high tourist season (November through June), locals and visitors stroll the cobblestone streets of the historic Distrito del Arte, and indeed the downtown district at large celebrating this legacy of history and culture.

Artists and art lovers open their galleries to showcase their latest offerings, downtown monuments like City Hall and the old church are outlined by colorful lights, arts and crafts makers spread out their wares on tables or along the sidewalks, wandering musicians serenade passersby sipping wine, or those taking a breather at local bars and restaurants.

This season’s Art Walk has been the biggest and best yet; and there is still time to enjoy the event before it goes on hiatus:  eight more Thursday evening celebrations are scheduled before the end of June.

For those unable to experience this festival of sights, sounds and flavors before then, don’t worry. Art Walk returns at the beginning of November each year, with all new art and, traditionally, personalized altars as part of Day of the Dead remembrances throughout Mexico.

Gastrovino Takes Food and Wine to Another Level in Todos Santos

Todos Santos has two distinct event seasons. The first takes place during the first few months of each year, when the Pacific Coast pueblo magico hosts a series of cultural festivals celebrating music, art, writing and film. The second begins in May and extends through the summer months, with the focus shifting to the culinary sphere.

Gastrovino is the first and best of these palate pleasing events, an annual food and wine festival that pairs fine fare and lively entertainment with wines from Mexico’s premier growing region, Valle de Guadalupe outside Ensenada. The festival, which returns May 5 – 7, was the brainchild of the owners of La Bodega de Todos Santos, a local boutique that specializes in wine and olive oil.

Over the past five years, Gastrovino has continued to grow in reputation, with auxiliary events like a Friday dinner at the historic Hotel California leading up to the main event on Sunday:  a food and wine extravaganza in the town’s plaza publico, complete with musical performances and a silent auction to benefit local causes.

This year, the Friday dinner at Hotel California has been transformed into an elegant White Ball, adding fashionable accents to the traditional feast, which falls on Cinco de Mayo. Saturday brings a GastroTour of the beautiful downtown district, as well as a Blind Wine Tasting Challenge at Jazamango Restaurant, with prizes going to the top three finishers after a flight of 12 wines.

The main event Sunday starts at 2 p.m., and features performances from the winner of La Voz Mexico (a national version of the international television series The Voice), top regional chefs and winemakers, artists painting live, a circus show, and discounted prices on bottles of wine. As always, proceeds are earmarked for charity, with the majority going to the Palapa Society of Todos Santos (which supports children’s causes), and the rest to the restoration of Old San Juan Park. The “after party” starts at the Sky Lounge at Guaycura Boutique Hotel & Spa at 7 p.m.

Todos Santos is less than an hour by car from Cabo San Lucas. Ticket prices vary according to each event, and may be purchased at several locations around Baja California Sur:  La Bodega de Todos Santos and Libreria El Tecolote in Todos Santos; Got Baja in La Paz; and the Wine Market and Galeria Pez Gordo in Los Cabos. For more information, visit http://gastrovino.mx/fest/.

Cheese and Wine Festival Benefits Local Children

Los Cabos has burnished its wining and dining reputation in recent years with an ever increasing series of spectacular culinary themed events, from the enormous annual Sabor a Cabo festival – which features upwards of 50 top local chefs – to chic tasting affairs like ultra-luxury property The Resort at Pedregal’s summertime Art of Taste.

For connoisseurs of cultured milk products and fermented grape juice, however, the standard setter remains the yearly Cheese & Wine Festival, the 5th edition of which takes place this Saturday, March 25, from 6 to 10 p.m.

Proceeds from the high-end foodie fete, as always, go to benefit the Los Cabos Children’s Foundation, which for the past 13 years has been working to provide access to pediatric oncology, cardiology and intensive care programs to local children with serious medical issues.

The backdrop for this gustatory celebration will also be familiar to attendees of earlier incarnations:  the elegant and expansive Salon Hacienda ballroom at Sheraton’s 270-room showpiece resort in the Cabo del Sol development at Punta Ballena, a whale-shaped point overlooking the Sea of Cortez between cape cities Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo.

Sheraton’s Hacienda del Mar property has long been famed as a special events destination (Hacienda del Mar hosted each of the previous four Cheese & Wine Festivals, and also welcomes participants and guests for both the Los Cabos International Film Festival and the Los Cabos Pro-Am Golf Tournament); as well as for its numerous excellent onsite restaurants, which include Pitahayas (whose chef, Volker Romeike, pioneered pan-Asian fusion cuisine in Los Cabos), De Cortez Grill (home to superb steaks and seafood) and Girasoles (lauded for its traditional Mexican specialty dishes).

For tickets or additional information about the 5th annual Cheese and Wine Festival, visit www.sheratonhaciendadelmar.com, email hacienda.delmar@ sheraton.com, or call (624) 145-8000.

14th Annual Todos Santos Film Festival Kicks Off Tonight

Los Cabos burst upon the cinematic circuit in 2012, with a flurry of red carpet galas and glamorous  soirees featuring A-list movie stars. The arrival of the Los Cabos International Film Festival was good news for Baja California Sur based cinephiles, but hardly a novelty since the nearby pueblo magico of Todos Santos had been hosting its own celebration of motion pictures since 2004.

The most traditional and long-running local film festival returns tonight, March 1, with a celebration of Youth in Video – one of the festival’s more enduring programs – at La Morena restaurant in Todos Santos; an evening of special screenings at the historic Teatro-Cine General Manuel Marquez de Leon; and, in the state capital of La Paz, a documentary about Mexican revolutionary hero Pancho Villa, as well as awards honoring the director, Carlos Bolado, distinguished actor Damian Alcazar, and actor and native son Enoc Leaño.

The 14th annual edition of the Todos Santos Film Festival will conclude Sunday, March 5. In the interim, locals and visitors alike are invited to enjoy a slate of fine films representing the best of contemporary Mexican and Latin American cinema. Given its proximity to Los Cabos – Todos Santos is less than an hour by car from Cabo San Lucas – the festival is one of the region’s most popular cultural attractions.

El Festival de Cine Todos Santos, as it is known in Spanish, was originally founded by local resident Sylvia Perel. Born in Argentina, Perel took a degree in Art History and founded and directed The Latino Film Festival in San Francisco before settling in Baja California Sur in 2000. Her meticulously curated Todos Santos Film Festival has, from its inception, been dedicated to promoting cinematic culture in the region, and in recent years has increasingly established a presence in nearby Pescadero, as well as in La Paz. Screenings will once again be held in all three communities this year: at Casa Ejidal in Pescadero, and at Cinemex and other select locations in La Paz.

The primary showcase, however, remains the beautifully renovated Teatro-Cine General Manuel Marquez de Leon, a vintage theater which first opened in 1944 across from the plaza principal in Todos Santos. Named for a 19th century military leader and freedom fighter, the Marquez on the marquee was a native of the mining community of San Antonio, but resided for many years in Todos Santos. His name also graces the international airport in La Paz.

Although all screenings are in Spanish, gringos needn’t feel excluded. Each of the  films screened at the 14th annual Todos Santos Film Festival will be accompanied by English subtitles. For a complete program of movie listings, or for information about tickets, visit www.todossantoscine.org.

Golfing for a Good Cause – Paws ‘n Claws Tournament Returns

No one rallies the Los Cabos community around a good cause quite

as effectively as the local Humane Society.

Their secret? Great events.

Each winter esteemed Señoras and Señors gladly don holiday finery for the always popular Dressed to the K9s, an elegant costume themed gala featuring dinner, drinks and dancing. And every spring, sporting types hit the links for a golf tournament, the famed “Paws ‘n Claws,” reliving their most memorable shots over dinner the same evening.

The end result of these convivial social gatherings, besides a great time had by all, is continued funding for local spay and neuter programs, adoption efforts, and other animal focused initiatives.

This year, the 12th annual Paws ‘n Claws Open Golf Tournament & BBQ will take place Saturday, April 1, on the Mountain and Arroyo Courses at Palmilla Golf Club. Palmilla’s unique 27-hole layout – spread over three 9-hole courses: Ocean, Mountain and Arroyo – was designed by none other than 18-time major champion Jack Nicklaus.

“The Golden Bear” is the godfather of golf in Los Cabos, having crafted six world-class courses locally: Palmilla, Cabo del Sol’s Ocean Course, El Dorado, Club Campestre, Quivira, and a composite design with Greg Norman at Puerto Los Cabos. Palmilla Golf Club was his first design, not only in Los Cabos, but in all of Latin America. The Mountain and Arroyo Courses were completed in 1992, the complementary Ocean layout five years later. Over the past 25 years, Palmilla has hosted many tournaments, including the 1997 PGA Senior Slam – in which Nicklaus was narrowly defeated by Hale Irwin – and the 2007 Audi World Cup Finals.

The post-tournament dinner this year is actually an afternoon BBQ hosted by Acre, one of the leading lights (along with Flora Farm and Huerta Los Tamarindos) of the local farm-to-table movement. The 25-acre Acre farm is acclaimed for its fresh produce and onsite restaurant and cocktail bar, and will soon be the site of the area’s only treehouse accommodations. The BBQ is scheduled for 2 – 6 p.m., and as always will be accompanied by live entertainment and a silent auction.

For more information about the Paws ‘n Claws Open Golf Tournament and BBQ, call Linda at (624) 172-6349 or visit www.loscaboshumanesociety.com. To purchase tickets, call Margarita at (624) 129-7399, or Barbara at (624) 143-2726.

NFL Stars Align in Cabo for Celebrity Golf and Fishing Tournaments

Cabo San Lucas has always been popular with actors and professional athletes, but where the latter are concerned it hasn’t always been met with widespread acclaim.

Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo was roundly pilloried for his decision to vacation at Land’s End with Jessica Simpson before a 2007 playoff game against the rival New York Giants, a game favored Dallas subsequently lost.

Heisman Trophy winner Johnny Manziel, meanwhile, was famously photographed clubbing at late night Los Cabos landmark El Squid Roe during Spring Break 2013, an early glimpse into the hard-partying behavior that would characterize his pro career.

NFL players such as current Dallas starting QB Dak Prescott can look forward to a new era in Cabo, however, thanks to the inaugural Baja Athletic Conference, slated for February 23 – 26, 2017.

Now, rather than taking heat for their decision to head south of the border, NFL players can bask in the heat of Cabo’s “endless summer” while working on their chipping, putting and casting techniques. The three-day event kicks off, so to speak, with a large memorabilia signing session, followed by world-class golf and fishing tournaments in which the public is invited to play with the pros while competing for up to $1o,ooo in cash in each event.

The golf tournament is hosted by The Dunes at Diamante – currently ranked as the 38th best course in the world by GOLF Magazine – as well as the Tiger Woods designed El Cardonal at Diamante. The fishing tournament takes place the following day, with jackpots awarded to the biggest catch in several categories, including billfish, tuna, wahoo and dorado. VIP cocktail parties are also on tap, both at The Cape Hotel and the Cabo San Lucas Marina.

Below is a complete list of NFL participants…

NFL Legends:  Kellen Winslow, Charlie Joiner, Anthony Muñoz, Dermontti Dawson, Thurman Thomas, Kenny Houston, Michael Haynes, Paul Krause, Cris Carter, Ray Guy, James Lofton, Bobby Bell, John Randle, Curley Culp, Warren Sapp, Willie Roaf, Mel Renfro, Andre Reed, John Stallworth, Chris Doleman

Current NFL Players:  Dak Prescott, James White, Jason Verrett, Kevin White, Mike Adams, Torrey Smith, Jordan Reed, Brett Hundley, Braxton Miller, Giovanni Bernard, Kenyan Drake, Danielle Hunter, Michael Thomas, Dominique Easley, Kelvin Benjamin, Thomas Davis, Delanie Walker, Kyle Harrington, Bradley Sowell, Frostee Rucker, Caleb Benenoch

Art, Culture and Magic: Festival Season in Todos Santos

There is a special kind of light in Todos Santos: not just the warm sunshine that bathes all of Baja California Sur in a golden glow some 330 days a year; but the kind of light that seems to hint at something just beyond the known world.

It was this light, among other things, that convinced painter Charles Stewart and his wife Mary Lou to move to the Pacific Coast pueblo magico (a government designation that means, literally, “magical town”) in 1985, the first of a now thriving colony of artists to do so.

A wealthy sugar capital during the 19th century, Todos Santos is now a popular day trip destination for Los Cabos travelers – it’s only about 45 minutes by car from Cabo San Lucas – thanks to its distinctive blend of bohemian chic, stately red-brick buildings and world-class surfing.

This light shines at all times, but is never brighter than during the first few months of each new year, when Todos Santos hosts a series of cultural festivals celebrating art, film, music and literature.

Tropic of Cancer Concert Series: Former R.E.M. guitarist Peter Buck pioneered the jam culture in Todos Santos with his annual music festival at landmark Hotel California and the main plaza, but for political reasons Buck is on hiatus and his music festival has morphed into a brand new event. This year, bands and performers such as La Santa Cecilia, Langhorne Slim, Las Cafeteras, Joan Osborne, The Autumn Defense, The Jag, Cordovas, Daniel Donato and Matt Haeck will inaugurate the Tropic of Cancer series at Hotel California and other local venues from Jan. 12 – 21.

Todos Santos Writers’ Workshop: Best known for its painters, Todos Santos has also been a congenial community for writers. The 4th annual writers’ workshop returns to the atmospheric Casa Dracula Feb. 5 – 11, and will feature seminars and workshops, speakers, publishing roundtables and other literary pursuits.

Todos Santos Art Festival/Open Studios Tour: All proceeds from this popular event, in which the town’s painters, sculptors, jewelers and other artists throw open the doors of their studios to the public, go to benefit art programs for local children. The 8th annual Open Studios Tour takes place the weekend of Feb. 11 – 12, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at art spaces throughout the historic downtown area.

Todos Santos Film Festival: This annual showcase for Mexican and Latin American films is based at the historic Teatro-Cine Manuel Marquez de Leon, a landmark WWII era movie theater that fronts the plaza principal. The 14th edition of this cinematic celebration returns March 1 – 5, however the screening schedule has not yet been announced.

Sabor a Cabo and the Many Flavors of Baja California Sur

Imagine a whirlwind two-week Los Cabos vacation filled with incredible food, spectacular wines, awe-inspiring surroundings, and live entertainment from world-class musicians. saborcabo

Now imagine the entire action-packed endeavor telescoped into the space of a single evening. If you can wrap your mind around that, then you’re either ready for the Sabor a Cabo food and wine festival, or you’ve already experienced one.

The 11th edition of “Sabor a Cabo (in English, “Taste of Cabo”) returns Dec. 10, and as always is organized by CANIRAC, the local restaurant association.

In keeping with recent momentum, the event just keeps getting bigger and better. This year over 50 top regional chefs will showcase their delicious dishes at the Sculpture Garden at Puerto Los Cabos, with the first-class fare paired with bottled offerings from over 20 peninsular wineries in a magnificent seaside setting.

Did I mention the most famous Mexican rock band of all-time will be performing?

That would be Maná, winner of four Grammy Awards and eight Latin Grammys, and generator of over 40 million in record sales worldwide. The Guadalajaran quartet has been called “the U2 of Spanish rock,” and regularly sells out large arenas. As such, their appearance in Los Cabos is a huge deal, and has inspired a tremendous demand for tickets to what was already the premier Land’s End culinary festival.

No wonder ticket prices this year range from $200 to $350 for V.I.P. seating.

The money goes to a good cause, however, with proceeds benefitting fire fighters in cape cities Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo.

Although Sabor a Cabo is unquestionably the headliner, auxiliary to-dos are also organized by CANIRAC: most notably, a Beer Fest, a Country Food and Wine Tasting, and an Art and Wine Walk in San Jose del Cabo’s historic Distrito del Arte.

The Beer Fest is expanding to a three-day event this year, and will take place Nov. 18 – 20 on the boardwalk promenade that parallels the Cabo San Lucas Marina. The Country Food and Wine Tasting will take place on Dec. 4 at Los Tamarindos, an organic farm and restaurant that, like neighbor Flora Farms, has helped pioneer the farm-to-table movement in Los Cabos.

For ticketing or other information, phone (624) 143-3944 or email ticket@caniracloscabos.com.
