Nature Nirvana: 5 Reasons to Visit Los Cabos This Summer

Los Cabos is forever sunny and spectacular, with a host of beautiful beaches to tempt U.S. and Canadian vacationers. But although cape cities Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo offer bikini and boardshorts weather on a year-round basis, summertime still has a special appeal here, because it is the perfect season to experience some  of the region’s signature outdoor adventures.

Here are five of our five favoites, and five reasons you’ll definitely want to visit Los Cabos this summer.

Catch Waves Surfing the Sea of Cortez

Surfers will find great waves in Baja California Sur on a year-round basis, although the scene shifts according to the season. During the winter months, for example, the best top breaks are found on the Pacific Coast, most notably off beaches like Cerritos, San Pedrito and La Pastora. The Sea of Cortez takes center stage during the summer months, when seasonal weather fronts and storms send perfect southeast swells towards Los Cabos and its beautiful East Cape. Los Cabos sites like Monuments (Playa Monumentos) reach their zenith during the summer, as do East Cape meccas like Nine Palms and Shipwrecks. The most famous summer break, however, is Zippers at Playa Costa Azul in San Jose del Cabo, formerly the host of the only WSL sponsored tournament in the area. Zippers and The Rock as Costa Azul are best left to the experts, but Costa Azul’s middle break and nearby Acapulquito are popular spots for beginners, and lessons are available.

Swim Side-by-Side with the World’s Largest Fish

The whale shark is the largest fish in the world, reaching up to 40 feet in length, and weighing as much as 47,000 pounds. There is no risk in swimming with these gentle giants, however, since they subsist solely on plankton. Baja California Sur’s capital city of La Paz is the premier place to indulge in this unforgettable wildlife adventure, with the majority of interactions occurring near the tip of the El Mogote peninsula. For those interested in whale shark swims, complimentary round-trip transportation from Los Cabos is provided by several respected activities providers, beginning during the month of August each year.

Go Big-Game Fishing for Blue and Black Marlin

Make no mistake. There is no bad time to go fishing in Los Cabos. But for those interested in getting their hooks into enormous black and blue marlin, there is definitely a “best” time…and it starts right now. Why do you think Bisbee’s hosts its trio of big-money tournaments every year in August and October? Bisbee’s East Cape Offshore saw a record 704 lb. blue marlin bagged in 2020, and saw all three tournaments pass the million-dollar mark in prize money for the first time. In 2021, total prize pools for the three topped 13.2 million. Despite the lucrative competitive allure, however, visiting anglers don’t need to enter any tournaments to enjoy the region’s spectacular big-game sportfishing. Charter boats are always available from the Cabo San Luas Marina.

Dive Into Unforgettable Undersea Adventures

Los Cabos boasts spectacular year-round diving, with a half-dozen great sites at Land’s End alone, plus easy access to the living coral reef at Cabo Pulmo–one of the oldest and largest in the Western Hemisphere–and dedicated shipwreck dive sites in both Los Cabos and La Paz. One local boat, the Solmar V, even offers week-long trips to the Revillagigedo Archipelago, some 250 miles south of Cabo San Lucas, for unbelievable underwater encounters with deep sea creatures like manta rays, dolphins and great white sharks. The best times to visit in terms of water temperatures and visibility, however, are during the late summer and early autumn months. From July through October, water temperatures typically range from about 75 to 85 degrees Fahrenheit. Cabo Pulmo is the recommended regional dive site during peak season, offering access to the spectacular coral reef, as well as the densest accumulation of fish and other marine life in the Sea of Cortez (over 800 species, thanks to its protected status as a national marine park and UNESCO World Heritage Site).

Help Protect Endangered Sea Turtles

Five of the world’s seven endangered sea turtle species come to Baja California to lay their eggs–the green turtle, hawksbill, loggerhead, olive riddle and leatherback (the largest sea turtle and the world’s fastest aquatic reptile)–with local conservation agencies and some area resorts offering opportunities to assist in the hatchling process. Why is this help so important? Although mature sea turtles are long-lived and have few predators, they are in great danger during their initial journey away from the nest, extremely vulnerable to predators on both land and sea. The help visitors give, in other words, contributes to the long lives of hatchlings, and also to the continuation of these remarkable species. In Los Cabos, sea turtle season begins in late August.

The Other Side of Paradise: 4 Reasons to Fall in Love with the East Cape of Los Cabos

In the 50 years since Mexican tourist trust FONATUR first began developing Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo into world-class tourist destinations, the cape cities have seen remarkable changes: from the arrival of luxury resorts and pampering spas to upscale dining and championship level golf courses.

But there’s another side of Los Cabos, one much less developed, but with considerable charms for visitors seeking a different kind of “Cabo” vacation. That would be the East Cape, a seventy-mile stretch of coastline that swells outward from San Jose del Cabo to Los Barriles.

This coastline offers spectacular conditions for just about every outdoor activity imaginable, from surfing, diving, fishing, and hiking to mountain biking, camping, kayaking and kiteboarding.

If you’ve never experienced life on the East Cape, now’s a good time to start. Here are four of our favorite reasons for vacationing here (and for possibly making the vacation permanent).

The East Cape is a Time Machine to the “Old Cabo”

Because is it so much less developed than Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo, going to the East Cape is a bit like getting into a time machine and hitting the setting for “Old Cabo”. The benchmark fishing resorts of Los Barriles and Buena Vista are close to 50 years old, and offer a glimpse of the region’s past, when the prime attractions were fishing, beaches, and little else. But head south below La Ribera and the old Camino Cabo Este (East Cape Road) is almost completely dirt, from just north of Cabo Pulmo to Zacatitos, 10 miles outside San Jose del Cabo.

The East Cape is an off-the-grid paradise, in other words – or at least significant parts of it still are – and it offers an incredible combination of peace, privacy, gorgeous scenery, and luxury rental accomodatons at affordable prices.

The Undersea Fantasia of Cabo Pulmo National Park

In 1995, the 100 or so residents of the tiny East Cape village of Cabo Pulmo noticed that their offshore waters were overfished and their offshore reef was being degraded. What followed was one of the world’s great ecological success stories. Determined residents and regional academics petitioned for protection, and Cabo Pulmo became first a protected sanctuary, and finally a national park and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The eight fingers of offshore coral reef are among the oldest in the Western Hemisphere, and in the 25 years since Cabo Pulmo gained protected status, it has become the most densely populated area of the Sea of Cortez in terms of marine life; it literally teams with life, from mantas, dolphins and giant sea turtles to profusions of colorful tropical fish so intense it’s awe-inspiring. Cabo Pulmo has become one of the best snorkeling and diving destinations on the planet, and visits here are among the highlights of any East Cape vacation.

Beautiful Beaches Without Crowds or Vendors

Surfers have been heading to East Cape beaches like Shipwrecks and Nine Palms for generations, riding the waves from southwest swells. These beaches are beautiful, and there are hundreds just like them along the East Cape, stunning stretches of sand with virtually no one on them save a few surfers, or local fishermen putting their boats in the water. No vendors will bother you, no crowds will intrude on your space. It’s remarkable really; a bit like being in your own private Corona commercial.

Villas and Vacation Rentals That Will Take Your Breath Away

Has there ever been a year like 2020 in showing just how important it can be to truly get away from it all? Not only for peace of mind, but for the health and safety of family and friends?

The beauty of the East Cape is that you can get away in style. Take the Villa El Rincon del Sol, for example, a private 12-acre estate just north of Cabo Pulmo that offers a luxurious five-bedroom vacation rental with heated infinity pool and two waterfalls, plus over 200 meters of private beachfront. There are no crowds or vendors to bother you here. The only sounds you’ll hear are seabirds and waves gently lapping upon the shore. It’s a perfect privacy, with your own beach and some of the best snorkeling and diving in the world just down the road. The home is staffed with four full-time employees, including your own private chef, and if you have a stressful day in the infinity pool, a professional masseuse is only a phone call away.

This is the beauty of the East Cape experience, and it’s why a few discerning travelers are choosing it over the crowds and the noisy hustle-bustle of Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo. If you want the hustle-bustle and the action, you can still have it, of course. The East Cape is in the Los Cabos municipality, after all, and thus proximate by car to the “other” Cabo.

But there’s also immense natural beauty and total privacy, and those things are in shorter supply each passing year.

Los Cabos Summer Fishing Tournament Season Heating Up for 2019

Every fisherman worth his salt knows about the big-money fishing tournaments that take place every October in Cabo San Lucas, headlined by the big daddy of them all, the millionaire making Bisbee’s Black & Blue Marlin Fishing Tournament

But the tournament season actually starts a little earlier in Los Cabos, and those who venture down for summer fishing and fun in the sun will find plenty of big-game action, as well as plenty of cash on the line for winning catches.

Here’s are five of the biggest tournaments on tap for Summer 2019 in Los Cabos:

6th Annual Pelagic Triple Crown of Fishing Tournament/Cabo Summer Slam – June 6 – 8

Much of the summer tournament action is centered around the Los Cabos municipality’s beautiful, less developed East Cape, but Cabo San Lucas is always a focal point when it comes to the biggest sponsors and most lucrative payouts. That’s certainly true of what qualifies as the first major tournament of the 2019 season, the Cabo Summer Slam, AKA the Pelagic Triple Crown of Fishing.

Pelagic, a Newport Beach based company, is one of the world’s leaders when it comes to lifestyle apparel and high-performance gear associated with watersports like fishing, boating, diving and surfing. So it’ll come as no surprise that the Cabo Summer Slam offers some high stakes prizes and jackpots. Over $200,000 is expected to be on the line for the 6th annual tournament in 2019–slated for June 6th to 8th–meaning it’s the biggest Cabo San Lucas based tournament until Bisbee’s big money competitions in October. Last year, Team Tejas took top honors by boating an incredible 25 marlin over two days of competition.

23rd Annual Stars and Stripes Golf and Fishing Tournament – June 27 – 30

During the 20+ years of its existence, the annual Stars and Stripes’ golf and fishing tournament has raised over 26 million dollars for youth focused charities. But it’s not simply a tournament or a charity benefit…more like a complete lifestyle experience. Participants stay at the luxurious Hilton Los Cabos; go big-game sportfishing for dorado, wahoo, tuna, sailfish, swordfish, and black, blue and striped marlin; play golf at some of the world’s best golf courses; and enjoy spectacular live entertainment nightly (Sammy Hagar headlined in 2015).

15th Annual East Cape Dorado Shootout – July 20

This is one of the largest fishing tournaments in Southern Baja, with an average turnout of 130 teams each year. What makes it so popular? The opportunity to win a brand new, fully-loaded 2019 Volkswagen Amarok pickup truck, of course. The rules are simple, catch the biggest dorado on July 20th and you win the truck. There will also be great prizes for 2nd and 3rd place, as well as for the largest tuna and largest wahoo caught that day. The beauty of this one-day tournament format is that anyone can win. After the tournament, Palmas De Cortez in Los Barriles will host the award ceremony, which is unlike any in Baja, with dinner, music, and an estimated $30,000 in raffle items given away.

20th Annual Bisbee’s East Cape Offshore – August 1 – 4

The East Cape Offshore is the first of three Bisbee’s fishing tournaments that take place in Baja California Sur each year. The ECO is always first, and kicks off Bisbee’s 2019 series starting August 1st. Cash prizes will be awarded to the top three qualifiers in marlin, tuna and dorado categories, with the awards celebration taking place afterwards at the Hotel Buena Vista. Base entry for the event is $1500 per team, with additional fees for daily jackpots. Prize money is based on entry fees received, with 60% going to the billfish winners, and 20% each to top tuna and dorado anglers.

3rd Annual East Cape Gold Cup Wahoo Jackpot Tournament – August 24

Similar to the East Cape Dorado Shootout with its drive-away first prize, the biggest wahoo caught on August 24th will earn one lucky fisherman a showroom fresh 2019 Volkswagen Tiguan SUV. In total, over $100,000 in cash and prizes are up for grabs, including great raffle prizes, return trips, fishing, and much more. The entry fee is only $500 per team and includes dinner at the awards ceremony.

Blue Notes on Golden Shores – Los Cabos Jazz Festival to Debut at Newly Opened Hard Rock Hotel

Los Cabos will never become as synonymous with jazz as New Orleans, which after all is its birthplace, but it won’t be for lack of trying. Cape cities Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo are now home to no less than three dedicated jazz festivals.

There’s the Jazz Weekend in San Jose del Cabo, which will celebrate its 7th edition at Plaza del Pescador on Feb. 15th and 16th, 2019; there’s the Life Luxe Jazz Experience Los Cabos, which premiered last November at Pueblo Bonito Pacifica on the Pacific Coast north of San Lucas, and has already committed to return in 2019; and there’s the newly minted Los Cabos Jazz Festival, which will help to inaugurate the newly minted Hard Rock Hotel in Cabo San Lucas on April 25th to 28th, 2019.

The baby of the bunch, the Los Cabos Jazz Festival, is the brainchild of noted jazz saxophonist and festival organizer Warren Hill. Originally from Toronto, Hill has charted several smooth jazz hits over the years. Nowadays, however, he is probably best known for Music Getaways, an event company he started that specializes in destination based music festivals. It was Hill and Music Getaways that started the now iconic Cancun Jazz Festival, a success he’s seeking to replicate in Los Cabos.

Based on the line-up that’s already been announced, success seems all but assured. Joining Hill on the festival bill are Boney James, Jeffrey Osborne, Jonathon Butler, Damien Escobar, West Coast Jam (featuring Richard Elliot, Peter White and DW3), Sax to the Max (featuring Michael Lington, Vincent Ingala and Paul Taylor), and many other notable artists.

Jazz is the headliner, but far from the only attraction. The new Hard Rock Hotel has been a long awaited addition to the upscale Diamante development, a beachfront oasis on the Pacific Coast that boasts championship level golf course designs from major champions Tiger Woods and Davis Love III.

Woods actually has designed two courses at Diamante–the parkland style El Cardonal and Oasis Short Course–with another on the way. The unquestioned star of the onsite golf slate, though, is Love’s majestic links-style Dunes Course. One of three Los Cabos courses currently ranked among the top 100 on the planet, Dunes holds the highest rating ever for a local loop. GOLF Magazine had it ranked 36th best in the world for 2018, while Golf Digest placed it at a more modest but still spectacular 47th.

The Hard Rock Hotel itself is a 639-room property with amenities that include five swim-up bars, six pools, eight restaurants and three lounges. The hotel officially opens in May 2019, but will welcome guests early for Los Cabos’ newest jazz focused celebration. More upscale attendees, however, may prefer to make reservations at one of the Land’s End area’s many breathtaking appointed and scenically situated luxury villas.

Bisbee’s Announces Dates for Another Year of Fishing Tournament Glory

The calendar window for Cabo San Lucas’ fishing tournament season comprises only about six months–from mid-June through mid-November–but like the area’s spectacular big-game fishing itself, the tournament news breaks all year-round.

Bisbee’s, the organizer of Cabo’s most famous trio fishing tournaments, has announced its schedule for 2019, as well as some changes aimed to maximize fun, fishing and efficiency at one particular event.

But first, the most important information. Bisbee’s schedule for 2019 is as follows:  the East Cape Offshore kick-starts the season August 1st to 4th; the charity focused Los Cabos Offshore takes place October 17th to 20th; and the big daddy of them all, the millionaire making Black & Blue, is scheduled for October 22nd to 26th.

Experienced tournament anglers will also be interested in the early bird registration deadlines, since those who make this registration cut are entered in a drawing to win free entry in the following year’s tournament. The early bird deadline for the 2019 ECO is June 30th; for the LCO and B&B, August 31.

The first tournament up, this season as always, is the East Cape Offshore in August. The ECO sees the only changes Bisbee’s has so far announced for this year’s tournaments, with only two days of fishing rather than the traditional three. The change was made to drive participation (and thus prize money), as well as making the tournament trip easier for Cabo San Lucas based boats, as the latter now shouldn’t have to refuel before heading home. Since the schedule says Aug. 1 – 4, that means the first day is dedicated to registration, then two days of solid fishing before the awards ceremony on the final day.

Everything else about the ECO remains basically the same. Cash prizes will be awarded to the top three qualifiers in marlin, tuna and dorado categories, with the awards celebration taking place afterwards at the Hotel Buena Vista. Base entry for the event is $1500 per team, with an across-the-board ante of $22,500 to qualify for all daily jackpots. Prize money is based on entry fees received, with 60% going to the billfish winners, and 20% each to top tuna and dorado anglers.

As for what’s at stake, last year’s ECO saw the record set for most prize money in the history of the tournament ($657,125), as well as a record tying 11 teams sharing in the prize payouts.

The Los Cabos Offshore returns October 17th, and kicks off the biggest nine days of the year on the Cabo San Lucas sporting calendar. Long known as “Little Bisbee’s” to differentiate it from the Black & Blue, or “Big Bisbee’s”, the LCO really isn’t so little anymore. The 2018 edition saw a record prize money payout of $1,165,000, making it the 8th fishing tournament in the world to top the million mark. The charity focused tournament also lived up to its billing in that regard, donating over a ton of fish caught during the four-day event, or an estimated 8,607 meals to local families. Registration remains $1,500 base entry, $22,500 across-the-board.

This year’s Black & Blue is slated to take place October 22nd to 26th, with registration on the first day, an awards ceremony on the last, and three days of fishing in between. Those visiting the Land’s End city during the event can watch daily drama as fish are weighed on the marina boardwalk in front of Puerto Paraiso. The drama is a little more intense, however, if you happen to be the one who caught the fish! Registration remains $5,000 per team, or $71,500 across the board for all jackpots and challenges.

The 2018 B&B saw a San Diego angler named Charlie Lee and his Chinito Bonito team earn a ridiculous $3,004,900 for hooking a 510 lb. black marlin. It was the second largest payout in big-game sportfishing history.

Of course, that’s why they call the Black & Blue “the world’s richest fishing tournament.”

Staggering as it seems, 2019 looks to be even better, and should break records all over again.

The Fiesta de la Musica Celebrates its 10th Anniversary in June with Performances from Over 100 Bands

In 1981 a French director of music and culture, inspired by a statistic that claimed half the country’s children played a musical instrument, began dreaming of a way to engage this musical spirit en masse. Soon after, in 1982, the first Fete de la Musique was held in Paris, where it was scheduled to coincide with the summer solstice, the longest day of the year.

Flash forward 36 years, and the Fete de la Musique is no longer solely a French celebration, but a worldwide phenomenon that takes place annually in over 450 cities in 12o countries around the globe. For the past 10 years, that list of cities has included San Jose del Cabo, the oldest and most populous of the two cape cities (Cabo San Lucas is the other) that comprise the modern-day municipality of Los Cabos. In San Jose, however, the celebration is known by its Spanish name, La Fiesta de la Musica.

This summer symphony is free and open to all musicians who’d like to participate, from amateurs to professionals, across all musical genres. The only prerequisite for participants and spectators – for whom admission is also free – is a love for music, a passion that’s so pervasive internationally that music is often referred to as the universal language. The art form’s universality, in fact, provides the context for the event’s local motto: “la fiesta de todos y para todos” (“the party from all and for all).

Over the past decade, the Fiesta de la Musica has become so important and so beloved by the local community that it’s now considered the premier music festival in Los Cabos. Certainly, it’s the most robustly attended, drawing over 25,000 people annually. The 2018 edition is slated for Saturday, June 23 – 6 p.m. to 2 a.m. – with some 100 or more bands and musical acts expected to perform throughout the city’s historic downtown area.

For those who won’t be in the area for the Fiesta de la Musica in June, Los Cabos and its surrounding environs offer plenty of other opportunities to hear great music from acclaimed performers. San Jose del Cabo is also famed for its Jazz Festival, which draws huge crowds to the Plaza del Pescador each February; and its Patron Saint festival every March features five days of live music, as well as a parade and regional food and drink.

Cape sister Cabo San Lucas hosts its own kind of musical celebration in October, when rock star Sammy Hagar throws a series of birthday bashes at Cabo Wabo Cantina, the nightclub he founded with his former Van Halen bandmates back in 1990. The Land’s End city’s biggest food festival, Sabor a Cabo, also brings in big-name headliners each December, from Mexican rock gods Mana to funk-soul legends like Earth Wind & Fire.

Todos Santos, a one-hour drive north of Cabo San Lucas, boasts its own rock star pedigree. The town’s Tropic of Cancer Concert Series, which draws alt-rock bands from across the U.S. and Mexico each January, grew out of the Todos Santos Music Festival that was originally founded by former R.E.M. guitarist Peter Buck.

The 6th Annual Los Cabos Open of Surf and the Evolution of Baja Surf Culture

When the Transpeninsular Highway was completed in 1973, surfers were among the first to explore Baja by car and bus, seeking out hidden beaches and long rumored surf breaks. The legendary spots were there, particularly in Baja California Sur, where great surf spots proliferated from Todos Santos around the southern rim to Los Cabos’ gorgeous East Cape.

Over the past forty-five years, however, the face of surf culture has changed in Los Cabos. Instead of trekking 1,000 miles by VW bus, today’s older, more affluent surfers are more likely to fly in and to eschew camping for luxurious surf-friendly resorts (The Cape Hotel and Cabo Surf Hotel being the two most notable) and well-appointed rental villas located near celebrated surf breaks like Monuments and Zippers.

For those who don’t like to fly with their boards, there are rental shops and guided surfaris to Cerritos and San Pedrito on the Pacific Coast, or more secluded East Coast breaks like Shipwrecks and Nine Palms. At least one local company offers lessons from a former Mexican national champion, and a famous regional five-star resort has partnered with big-wave legend Laird Hamilton on an apparel line.

Given its increasing popularity as a retirement site for former surf professionals, it should come as no surprise that there are also World Surf League sponsored surfing events held annually on the Baja California peninsula. One is a Big Wave Tour event off Todos Santos Island near Ensenada. The other is the Los Cabos Open of Surf, which is held each June at Zippers, a surf break at Playa Costa Azul in San Jose del Cabo.

When it premiered in 2013, the Los Cabos Open of Surf was a 6-star men’s event under the ASP (the forerunner to the WSL). Women joined the fun in 2014, and since 2015, the LCOS has been a QS 6000 event solely for women and junior men and women. The 2018 competition is scheduled for June 11 – 17, and like events in previous years, will be a celebration of all aspects of surf culture, from beach parties and culinary fetes to nightly entertainment featuring DJs and live musical performers.

Brazilian Silvana Lima is the defending women’s champion at the Los Cabos Open of Surf, while Hawaiian Summer Macedo and Barbadian Che Allan are the defending junior champions. The surfing action all takes place at Zippers, one of three well-known surf breaks at Playa Costa Azul (the others are the beginner-friendly Middle Break and the expert-level La Roca, which like Zippers is a right-hand reef break).

Neighboring beaches Acapulquito and Costa Azul are the center of the surf scene in Los Cabos, but Playa Monumentos (or Monuments) is also a prime attraction, with the added benefit of being the closest to Cabo San Lucas. In fact, views of El Arco and the other granite monuments at Land’s End are visible for those with enough ability to test Monuments tricky left-hand point break. It is actually one of the few left turning breaks (from the point of view of the surfer) in an area renowned for its abundance of great right-hand rides.

Surfable waves may be found on a year-round basis in Los Cabos and its environs, but there are two major seasons: summer for beaches on the Sea of Cortez side, winter for the Pacific Coast meccas near Todos Santos. Fishing tournaments, kite surfing tournaments, triathlons, and other water-related events are held in the area all year, every year.
