New Year, New Fiestas: January Events in Los Cabos

January marks the height of high tourist season in Los Cabos, as well as the height of whale watching season; meaning many of the world’s largest and most magnificent creatures can be seen up-close on daily tours guided by area activities providers.

But it’s not just the whales that make January special. The first month of the new year also sees the return of two important regional cultural showcases in the weekly Art Walk in San Jose del Cabo and the Tropic of Cancer Concert Series in Todos Santos, plus iconic southern Baja sporting competitions such as the Los Cabos Pro-Am golf tournament and the La Ventana Classic (a windsports competition that draws some of the West Coast’s best windsurfers and kiteboarders).

San Jose del Cabo Art Walk – January 2, 9, 16, 23, 30

The historic Distrito del Arte in San Jose del Cabo takes center stage each Thursday evening during high tourist season–November through June–when residents and visitors alike are invited to stroll its cobblestone streets and peruse the many eclectic fine arts galleries. Art Walk hours are 5 to 9 p.m., when the neighborhood comes alive with wine, cheese and guided tours, as well as colorful street artists and strolling mariachis.

Los Cabos Pro-Am Golf Tournament – January 12 – 16

The most notable golf tournament in a region famed for its spectacular courses returns January 12 – 16, 2020, as Cabo del Sol’s Ocean and Desert Courses play host to the 12th annual Los Cabos Pro-Am. Stay and play packages for the tournament include five days and four nights of accommodation at the Sheraton Grand Hacienda del Mar Golf & Spa Resort, as well as three rounds at the participating courses, plus an invitation to the opening and closing cocktail parties, and daily breakfast at one of Hacienda del Mar’s excellent onsite restaurants. Overall team prizes are another lure for amateurs.

Tropic of Cancer Concert Series in Todos Santos – January 15 – 19

Former R.E.M. guitarist Peter Buck pioneered jam culture in Todos Santos with this annual music festival, which brought in high-profile musicians for performances at the landmark Hotel California, as well as the town’s picturesque main plaza. Buck’s festival went on hiatus after he made some controversial comments about local politics at the 2016 event, but the music lives on. The freshly minted Tropic of Cancer Concert Series premiered in 2017, and is still going strong for its fourth iteration in 2020 with an all-star lineup headlined by Joan Osborne, Radio Free Honduras, Susto, Cordovas, Holy Spirits, Elizabeth Cook, La Victoria and The Charities.

La Ventana Classic – January 16 – 20

Baja California Sur boasts world-class conditions for a number of water-based activities: fishing, of course, but also surfing, sailing, diving, kayaking and, seasonally at least, windsports. Each winter, when strong El Norte winds blow down the Sea of Cortés, picturesque East Cape communities like Los Barriles and La Ventana become meccas for windsurfing and kiteboarding enthusiasts. Now that Los Barriles has ended its annual Lord of the Wind Showdown, the La Ventana’s “Classic” has become the premier regional competition, with windsurfers, kiteboarders and SUP (stand up paddleboarding) enthusiasts battling the breezes to earn cash and glory in various categories. This year’s event is scheduled for Jan. 16 – 20, with proceeds earmarked to benefit local schools. Mountain bike races have also been added to the event.

Whale Watching Season – Month-long

Each winter some 5,000 to 10,000 blue, gray, humpback and other whales migrate from their arctic feeding grounds to breed in the shallow water coves and inlets of beautiful Baja California Sur. In this regard these leviathans of the deep are very much like the snowbirds who flock to cape cities Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo to escape frigid winter temperatures in the U.S. and Canada. The only real difference–aside from the obvious anatomical ones–is one of scale. The longest mammalian migration ever recorded was in 2014, when a gray whale dubbed Varvara traveled over 14,000 miles round-trip from Russia to Cabo San Lucas. Humpbacks, however, are the most commonly seen species in Los Cabos waters during whale watching season, which officially stretches from December 15th to April 15th.

Seven Days of Dining Delights During San Jose del Cabo Restaurant Week

Cape cities Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo each have their own unique charms. Cabo San Lucas, for instance, is where you go if you want to experience world-class fishing or boisterous nightlife. San Jose del Cabo, on the other hand, is better known for more sophisticated attractions like culture and cuisine.

Speaking of the latter, the foremost cultural event in San Jose del Cabo–its seasonal Thursday night Art Walk–doesn’t resume until November, so in the meantime, the city is focusing on its renowned culinary scene with a weeklong celebration featuring 41 of its finest restaurants. That would be the second annual San Jose del Cabo Restaurant Week, which takes center stage from October 19th to 26th.

What makes this week different from any other, one might ask? For starters, all participating restaurants will be offering special three-course prix fixe dinner menus for only 800 pesos (approximately $40 U.S.) per person throughout the week.

That’s more than one might expect to pay at a local taquería, of course, but a veritable bargain for a night out at one of the city’s benchmark restaurants.

The most iconic of all San Jose del Cabo restaurants are undoubtedly the trio of farm-to-fork eateries found in the small community of Animas Bajas, just minutes outside the historic center of the city.  Acre, Los Tamarindos and Flora’s Field Kitchen not only grow all their own produce and source meat and fish from local sources, they also serve up their fresh fare in congenial outdoor surroundings, with tables set amid farm fields with views of rolling foothills and distant mountains. All three are considered to be among the best restaurants in the country, and two–Acre and Los Tamarindos–are participating in Restaurant Week… meaning visitors can sample their superb artisanal food and drinks at a rare budget-friendly price.

Those less interested in haute cuisine than comfort food will find plenty to like as well. Pizzas are readily available from Neapolitan-themed Pan di Bacco, and pastas from Italian specialists La Dolce, La Forchetta, and Macca Pasta Bar. Mesquite grilled American style hamburgers, meanwhile, headline the offerings from Barrio Burger; and the region’s first microbrewery, Baja Brewing Company, also has great food and drinks on tap.

But even that’s barely scratching the surface. There are vegan options; Japanese and Chinese cuisine fare; Latin American street food; traditional Mexican fare from Jazmin’s and Mi Casa; barefoot beachfront burritos and margaritas from the East Cape’s picturesque Buzzard’s Grill; upscale hotel dining at Café des Artistes at the JW Marriott and Hotel El Ganzo; fresh local seafood galore; and much, much more.

Several restaurants will also celebrate their anniversaries during Restaurant Week in San Jose del Cabo. Mi Cocina, for example, the gorgeous courtyard restaurant at boutique hotel Casa Natalia, will celebrate its 20th anniversary as a downtown fine dining standout with a special dinner party on Thursday, October 24th.

The website for San Jose del Cabo Restaurant Week can be found at www.restaurantweeksanjosedelcabo.com , and includes information on all 35 participating restaurants, notably their address, hours of operation, as well as contact info to make reservations or learn about special menus ahead of time.

Don’t miss this golden opportunity to taste your way through San Jose del Cabo, the culinary capital of Los Cabos and proud home to some of the finest restaurants in all of Mexico.

Opening ceremonies will be held in Plaza Mijares, the main square in downtown San Jose del Cabo, on Saturday, October 19th, and will feature tasty bites from all 41 participating restaurants. Tickets for this “starter course” are 700 pesos (about $35 U.S.) on the day of the event, or 500 pesos when purchased presale and accompanied by a book donation. Presale tickets are available at Pan di Bacco restaurant of Casa Natalia hotel.

All proceeds benefit the benefit the Biblioteca Pablo L Martinez, a library named in honor of the late great chronicler of local history.

Romance Unlimited: A Guide to Valentine’s Day Dinners in Los Cabos

Like New Year’s Eve, Valentine’s Day in Los Cabos requires a little prior planning…at least for those who’d like to dine at one of the area’s most famously romantic restaurants, where first-class food and wine are complemented by spectacular views and a host of amor focused amenities.

El Farallon

It’s hard to imagine a more dramatic entrance than that offered by The Resort at Pedregal, widely acclaimed as the finest resort in Cabo San Lucas since its opening in 2009. Guests enter through the longest private tunnel in Mexico – chandelier lit, of course – before emerging to gorgeous views of the Pacific Ocean from the outdoor lobby. The views are outstanding from every corner of the property, but reach their zenith at El Farallon, a restaurant set cliffside above crashing Pacific waves. Here, couples may start with pre-prandial sippers on the Champagne Terrace before being seated for dinner, and progressing through a parade of fresh and delicious local seafood.

Sunset da Mona Lisa

Perched virtually atop the Sea of Cortez at Sunset Point, Mona Lisa’s tables look across the famed Monuments surf break to the evocatively shaped granite monuments at Land’s End, the terminus of the nearly 800-mile Baja California peninsula. Every evening, those with the forethought to acquire a reservation for the sunset seating are treated to elegant Italian style cuisine, as well as explosive and unforgettable burst of color as the sun sinks beyond Cabo’s fabled Arch and the distant Pacific Ocean horizon. Even more forethought than usual will be required for Valentine’s Day reservations, when the restaurant traditionally rolls out a special four or five course menu.

Pitahayas

Imagine being seated beneath an enormous palapa, looking out beyond palm trees wrapped in colorful lights and ornaments to see moonlight glittering on the surface of the Sea of Cortez. That’s the gorgeous setting at Pitahayas – a fine dining fixture at Sheraton Grand’s luxe Hacienda del Mar – where Chef Volker Romeike has created one of the most diverse local fusion cuisines, a Pacific Rim medley that blends disparate influences from México and Hawaii to Japan, China, Korea, Thailand, and the Philippines. Private dinners may also be arranged in Cava de Santiago, one of the region’s most abundantly stocked wine cellars.

Caborey

There’s something about being on a boat that ups the romance factor almost exponentially. Caborey certainly proves that point with its signature dinner cruises, following chateaubriand and lobster with a Las Vegas style floorshow featuring Latin American singing and dancing. Tango anyone? The 144’ luxury catamaran sails nightly from the main dock on the Cabo San Lucas Marina, treating guests to live music on the top deck, as well as up-close views of Land’s End monuments like Pelican Rock, The Window to the Pacific, and of course El Arco.

Additional Options

Looking for something a little more creative? Plan a picnic at Playa del Amor, AKA Lover’s Beach. You’ll need to make arrangements with a caterer, and of course a water taxi driver for transportation to and from this gorgeous stretch of golden sand, which offers spectacular views across the bay, taking in a wide swath of coast from Cabo San Lucas to Punta Ballena.

Whichever romantic dinner option you choose, you’ll naturally want to return afterwards to your luxury villa rental with infinity pool views of seemingly infinite ocean. After all, there’s romance, and then there’s Romance, Los Cabos Style.

The World Through Rosé Colored Glasses: Wine Tasting in Los Cabos

Los Cabos has come a long way since its early days as a tourist destination, when the primary draws were big-game fishing and Cabo San Lucas’ boisterous late-night party scene. In recent years, the area has become increasingly more sophisticated, adding pampering spas, upscale boutiques and first-class restaurants with dedicated wine programs to its portfolio of attractions.

The explosion of interest in Baja California’s wine country – northern Baja grape growing valleys like Valle de Guadalupe produce over 90% of Mexico’s table wines – has translated to vastly expanded wine lists at area restaurants, many of which now specialize in pairing regional food and wines.

Here are four local restaurants where the wines are every bit the equal of the fine cuisine.

Sunset da Mona Lisa

The views are so spectacular that the food and wine rarely get their due. Located in the tourist corridor, overlooking famed surf beach Playa Monumentos, this restaurant hugs the water’s edge, and offers magnificent views of the sun setting over the evocative granite monuments at Land’s End. So romantic are the views that the restaurant has had to hire a full-time wedding coordinator. But the Italian cuisine and fresh local seafood (the restaurant has its own fishing boats) are also superb, and the recently added Taittinger Terrace Oyster and Champagne Bar adds yet another level of seaside romance and world-class wine service.

El Farallon

This may be the one restaurant in Los Cabos that can match Sunset da Mona Lisa for romantic amenities and sheer jaw-dropping views. Set on a cliffside above crashing Pacific Ocean waves at the best resort in Cabo San Lucas, The Resort at Pedregal, El Farallon serves up market style seafood in truly remarkable surroundings. And like Sunset da Mona Lisa, it has added a Champagne Terrace in recent years to up the ante for what was already a breathtaking dining experience. Don’t worry about figuring out the proper cheese pairings. Sommeliers are there to help.

Pitahayas

When it comes to large, well-stocked wine cellars, Chef Volker Romeike is a pioneer. Of course, the chef is more famous for pioneering pan-Asian fusion cuisine at his scenically set restaurant, Pitahayas, at Sheraton’s Grand Hacienda del Mar. There, diners enjoy piquant dishes incorporating elements from countries as disparate as Mexico, the U.S., China, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Thailand, and the Philippines. Oenophiles, however, will be most impressed with La Cava de Santiago, the wine cellar and dining area that is home to 400 labels from premier domestic and international producers.

Solomon’s Landing

Solomon’s excels at monthly wine pairing events. Truth be told, though, Solomon’s excels at everything. What was originally a modest taco stand some 20 plus years ago has flourished under the ownership of Brian Solomon to become one of the must-visit meal destinations on the Cabo San Lucas Marina. Seafood is the New Orleans trained chef’s specialty, but Solomon’s serves up delicious food of all kinds morning, noon and night. But the best time to experience the restaurant’s unique approach to fine dining is during the monthly wine pairing dinners, when bottles from the generously stocked, climate controlled cellar are paired with some of the chef’s signature dishes.

Sabor a Cabo and the Many Flavors of Baja California Sur

Imagine a whirlwind two-week Los Cabos vacation filled with incredible food, spectacular wines, awe-inspiring surroundings, and live entertainment from world-class musicians. saborcabo

Now imagine the entire action-packed endeavor telescoped into the space of a single evening. If you can wrap your mind around that, then you’re either ready for the Sabor a Cabo food and wine festival, or you’ve already experienced one.

The 11th edition of “Sabor a Cabo (in English, “Taste of Cabo”) returns Dec. 10, and as always is organized by CANIRAC, the local restaurant association.

In keeping with recent momentum, the event just keeps getting bigger and better. This year over 50 top regional chefs will showcase their delicious dishes at the Sculpture Garden at Puerto Los Cabos, with the first-class fare paired with bottled offerings from over 20 peninsular wineries in a magnificent seaside setting.

Did I mention the most famous Mexican rock band of all-time will be performing?

That would be Maná, winner of four Grammy Awards and eight Latin Grammys, and generator of over 40 million in record sales worldwide. The Guadalajaran quartet has been called “the U2 of Spanish rock,” and regularly sells out large arenas. As such, their appearance in Los Cabos is a huge deal, and has inspired a tremendous demand for tickets to what was already the premier Land’s End culinary festival.

No wonder ticket prices this year range from $200 to $350 for V.I.P. seating.

The money goes to a good cause, however, with proceeds benefitting fire fighters in cape cities Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo.

Although Sabor a Cabo is unquestionably the headliner, auxiliary to-dos are also organized by CANIRAC: most notably, a Beer Fest, a Country Food and Wine Tasting, and an Art and Wine Walk in San Jose del Cabo’s historic Distrito del Arte.

The Beer Fest is expanding to a three-day event this year, and will take place Nov. 18 – 20 on the boardwalk promenade that parallels the Cabo San Lucas Marina. The Country Food and Wine Tasting will take place on Dec. 4 at Los Tamarindos, an organic farm and restaurant that, like neighbor Flora Farms, has helped pioneer the farm-to-table movement in Los Cabos.

For ticketing or other information, phone (624) 143-3944 or email ticket@caniracloscabos.com.
