Baseline Rally: ATP Los Cabos Open of Tennis Returns in July 2021

Golf and fishing are the two biggest sports in Los Cabos, not only in terms of participation by both locals and visitors, but also when it comes of events. Golf’s traditional country club partner, tennis, is also well-represented, however. There may not be as many tennis courts as there are golf courses, but there are courts located throughout the cape cities, from Pedregal in Cabo San Lucas to resort-based courts in the Tourist Corridor, San Jose del Cabo, and even now on the East Cape. And just as there are high profile golf and fishing events each year, there’s also an ATP sponsored tennis tournament held annually in Los Cabos.

For context, there are only two professional tennis tournaments played each year in Mexico. The first is the Mexican Open, a staple of the ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) Tour since 1993, and a rite of spring in Acapulco since 2001. The second is the Los Cabos Open, an ATP 250 series men’s singles and doubles competition that premiered in 2016 at a newly constructed tennis complex at the Delmar International School, just outside Cabo San Lucas.

By dint of its place on the schedule in late February, the Mexican Open was able to take place in its entirety last year before the coronavirus pandemic and quarantine conditions took effect across the globe. The event even featured a stirring victory in the singles final by legendary Spanish champion Rafael Nadal. The Los Cabos Open was not so lucky. Although quarantine conditions had lifted in Los Cabos by June 2020, the tournament wasn’t able to take place by July, and had to be canceled until 2021. But this year is another story, and as vaccines roll out and a sense of normalcy gradually returns, so too does the only high-profile tennis tournament in Los Cabos.

The Los Cabos Open returns for its 5th tournament July 19 – 24, bringing back some of the world’s best players to compete for over $850,000 in prize money, and offering plenty of off-the-court festivities, from high-end food and drink concessions to invitation-only special events. The event features 28 players competing in men’s singles, 16 duos in the doubles draw. No players have been announced as yet, but the event regularly draws many men ranked in the top 50 in the world to compete on the local hard courts.

Croatian Ivo Karlovic won the inaugural event in 2016 over Spaniard Feliciano Lopez, and other past champions have included hard-serving American Sam Querrey, Italian Fabio Fognini, and Diego Schwartzman from Argentina. It’s an impressive group. Lopez and Fognini both boast grand slam doubles titles, and Schwartzman and Fognini are currently ranked among the top 20 players in the world. Karlovic, meanwhile, for several years held the record for the fastest-ever serve, and Querrey still holds the record for the most consecutive service aces in ATP tournament play with 10.

The primary forces behind the first four Los Cabos Open tournaments were banking and financial services giant Mifel, and Cinemex, the largest movie theater chain in Mexico. Both return as primary sponsors in 2021, and will help to grow the impressive facilities that continue to spring up around the event.

The tournament host is again Delmar International School, a private bilingual educational institution, where six separate courts – including a 3,500 seat stadium and a 1,000 seat grandstand – have been specially built, as was an enormous exhibit area and food concession center featuring spectacular Land’s End views. Attendees will not only enjoy brilliant tennis, but be able to enjoy first-class food and drinks as well.

Tickets for this year’s event are available by the day or week at www.abiertoloscabos.com, or at select locations in Los Cabos and Mexico City. For stylish accommodations during tournament week, meanwhile, we invite you to peruse the private villa and vacation rental options at www.loscabosvillas.com.

Two Top 10 Players Commit to Los Cabos for 2018 ATP Tennis Tournament

Los Cabos is justifiably famed for its booming golf scene, with over a dozen world-class courses and counting in Cabo San Lucas, San Jose del Cabo and their connecting corridor. But the cape cities have also proved fertile for golf’s traditional country club partner, tennis.

The most high-profile example of this is the Los Cabos Open, an ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) sponsored tournament hosted each summer near Cabo San Lucas. Two of the world’s top 10 ranked men, American Jack Sock and Argentine Juan Martin del Potro, have already committed for the 2018 event, scheduled to take place July 30th to August 4th on the grounds of the Delmar International School.

“We wanted to count on at least one top 10,” said tournament director Geoffrey Fernandez, “but this year we have two.”

The Los Cabos Open (or Abierto Los Cabos as it is known is Spanish) is one of two ATP events held annually in Mexico, the other being the Mexican Open in Acapulco. The first Los Cabos Open tournament in 2016 featured 13 of the world’s 50 best players, and was won by hard serving Croatian Ivo Karlovic, who defeated Spanish star Feliciano Lopez in the final. The match had historic dimensions, as it featured the oldest finalists in an ATP event since 1977. Last year, American Sam Querrey accomplished the first Mexican Double, winning both the country’s professional tournaments in the same year. Juan Martin del Potro won in Acapulco a few weeks ago, so another Mexican Double is potentially in play this year.

In addition to Sock and del Potro, world number 20 Fabio Fognini, and 38th ranked Lopez have also confirmed. The defending Queen’s Club champion and a former French Open doubles champion, Lopez has appeared at all of the Los Cabos Opens to date, and has helped to promote the tournament to a broader audience with numerous media appearances on its behalf. Others who have committed for this year’s 3rd annual event include current no. 54 Ryan Harrison and a singles finalist from last year, Thanasi Kokkinakis. Last year’s champion, Sam Querrey, is also expected to return, but has not yet made it official.

The tournament takes place at the Delmar International School, a bilingual and bicultural education facility serving children K-12. Special facilities were built there for the first tournament in 2016, highlighted by a 3,500 seat stadium, grandstand and auxiliary couts, plus a hospitality center featuring fine food and drink, sponsor tents, and of course gorgeous views of Land’s End. Bank and financial services group Mifel and theater chain Cinemex remain the tournament’s primary sponsors, but other companies who have supported the LCO include ESPN, Pepsi, Adidas, Michelob and Mazda.

The Los Cabos Open’s early successes have put it on a path to equal, if not eventually surpass The Mexican Open. The latter has been around since 1993, and now offers over $1.6 million dollars in prize money as part of the ATP’s World Tour 500 series. The Los Cabos Open, by contrast, is an ATP 250 series men’s singles and doubles event with nearly $800,000 in prize money. That’s the most of any ATP 250 series event in the Americas, despite the fact that the tournament only premiered in 2016.

To put a few of those numbers in perspective, at the absolute top-level in tennis are the four Grand Slam tournaments (Wimbledon and the U.S., Australian and French Opens), followed by a single ATP Finals event, nine ATP World Masters Tour 1000 competitions, 13 ATP 500 series events, and 40 ATP 250s. Thus, the Los Cabos Open is currently among the 67 best tournaments in the world, and although it has only been around for three years, is already angling to move up to the top 27 by joining the Mexican Open on the ATP 500 roster.

That goal may take a few more years to accomplish, but there’s no question that tennis interest in Los Cabos is at an all-time high, and that this year’s Los Cabos Open will feature the best field in its short but memorable history.

Los Cabos Open Tennis Tournament Returns This Summer

There are only two professional tennis tournaments played each year in Mexico.

The first is the Mexican Open, a staple of the ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) Tour since 1993, and a rite of spring in Acapulco since 2001. The second is the Los Cabos Open, an ATP mens singles and doubles competition that premiered in 2016 at a newly constructed tennis complex just outside Cabo San Lucas.

The Los Cabos Open returns for its sophomore edition July 31 – August 5, bringing back some of the world’s best players to compete for nearly $800,000 in prize money, and offering plenty of off-the-court festivities, from high-end food and drink concessions to invitation-only special events (last year’s media cruise showcased top players volleying on a luxury yacht based tennis court in front of Land’s End).

The primary forces behind the first Los Cabos Open were banking and financial services giant Mifel, and Cinemex, the largest movie theater chain in Mexico. Both return as primary sponsors in 2017, and will help to grow the impressive facilities that have sprung up around the event.

The tournament host is again Delmar International School, a private bilingual educational institution, where last year six separate courts – including a 3,500 seat stadium and a 1,000 seat grandstand – were specially built, as was an enormous exhibit area and food concession center featuring spectacular Land’s End views. Attendees will not only enjoy brilliant tennis, but be able to sample movie quality Cinemex popcorn, savor fresh local seafood, and sip world-class wines from Baja’s Valle de Guadalupe. Players and special guests, meanwhile, will be lodged at the nearby Sheraton Grand Los Cabos Hacienda del Mar Resort.

Last year, mammoth-serving Croatian Ivo Karlovic beat major champion Feliciano Lopez in the singles final. Lopez, a dashing Spaniard with major championship credentials (he won the French Open doubles in 2016 with countryman Marc Lopez), was the media darling of the first event, fawned over by the Spanish speaking Los Cabos press corps. He returns in 2017, as do six other players ranked in the top 100 internationally. Thomas Berdych, a former Wimbledon finalist currently ranked 14th worldwide, joins Lopez as the marquee attraction.

Tickets for this year’s event are available by the day or week at www.abiertoloscabos.com, or at select box office locations like Koral Concierge in San Jose del Cabo. For stylish accommodations during tournament week, peruse the private villa options at www.loscabosvillas.com.
