Los Cabos by the Numbers: Destination Achieves Full Tourism Recovery with Positive Projections Ahead

Fueled by the destination’s strong vaccination program and strict safety protocols, Los Cabos forecasts to close the year surpassing pre-pandemic tourism levels. It’s an incredibly positive development given the circumstances, as Los Cabos’ business leaders – from the Tourism Board on down – have helped to drive the destination to a complete recovery of travel and tourism activity. In fact, the latest numbers show a 20% growth in tourism arrivals in the last quarter from Jul. – Sep. 2021 when compared to the same period in 2019.

In September 2021, Los Cabos recorded nearly 118,000 international arrivals, making it the most successful September on record, with a 40% increase in international arrivals compared to 2019. To date, Los Cabos is Mexico’s leading destination in tourism recovery, nearly 20 percentage points higher in visitation recovery in September 2021 compared to Mexico’s other top tourism destinations.

As a result of this recovery, the destination has been able to recuperate all of its formal hospitality jobs, which are critical to the tourism sector of Los Cabos. The destination’s commitment to efforts that support the well-being of the community and visitors have been foundational to its successful recovery and capability to offer a safer travel environment. This includes strong COVID-19 health and safety protocols, and community adoption of the destination’s vaccination program, which has led to close to 90% of the population ages 18 and over having received at least one dose to date.

“The COVID-19 pandemic has been challenging for travel destinations across the world and we are energized to see Los Cabos achieve a full recovery since tourism is at the heart of what we do,” said Rodrigo Esponda, Managing Director of the Los Cabos Tourism Board. “We will hold tight to the health and safety efforts that got us here. As we head into the holiday season of higher travel activity, it’s our goal to continue to offer the same safer travel environment.”

Looking ahead, there is a 45% increase in scheduled seats from the U.S. to the Los Cabos International Airport over the next six months – November 2021 to April 2022 – when compared to the same timeframe in 2019 – 2020. Forecasted bookings for the final winter months of 2021 are estimated to boost the destination so that it not only reaches but surpasses pre-pandemic levels – an approximate 2.8 million annual visitors. Los Cabos is continuing to see the trend of short booking windows with reservations being made only one month out.

In 2021, Los Cabos travelers have been most interested in a mix of outdoor adventure, luxury and personalized experiences that are environmentally safe and give back to the local community. Going into 2022, the destination expects to continue to see an increase in conscious travelers looking for sustainable and environmentally friendly experiences. This includes activities such as farm-to-table dining and sea turtle preservation programs. Also, all tourists and the local community are encouraged to help maintain, respect and conserve Los Cabos’ 22 Blue Flag-certified beaches – renowned for their superior cleanliness, water quality and security.

Through the year and a half of the pandemic, Los Cabos’ business model – which combines the efforts of the private and public sectors – has proven to be a successful strategy to drive tourism recovery. The collaborative approach between state authorities and tourism partners has allowed the destination to not only quickly respond to the ongoing crisis, but also to identify new streams of business opportunities and niche markets to accommodate the evolving habits of travelers around the world.

Bisbee’s Continues to Smash Records as Black & Blue Tournament Starts

It seems as if nothing can stop Bisbee’s from breaking records. Not even a global pandemic.

The season started hot in August at Bisbee’s East Cape Offshore, when prize money cracked the million dollar mark for the first time ever on the basis of a record 72 entered teams, and Team Chupacabra boated the biggest blue marlin – 704 lbs. – ever weighed during the 21 year history of the event.

And the heat has continued into October, with Bisbee’s Los Cabos Offshore. The recently completed tournament (Sunday was the final day) saw a record number of 128 teams push the prize purse to another record: 1.44 million dollars. Team Sporty Game walked away with the biggest check – $837,816 dollars – for bringing in the biggest billfish (a 514 lb. black marlin) plus daily jackpot earnings. Pocket Aces came in second, but still walked away with over $293,500 for a few days of fishing in gorgeous sunshine. True Grit, meanwhile, took home pride (and a check for $138,760) after winning the tuna category with a 228 lb. yellowfin tuna.

Another tournament, the non-Bisbee’s sponsored Los Cabos Billfish Tournament, also saw plenty of action. The biggest moment, literally, may have been when angler Hugo Pino aboard the Stella June bagged a whopping 593 lb. black marlin. That catch still wasn’t good enough to win the title on total points, an honor that went to perpetual contenders El Suertudo and fishermen Greg DiStefano, who caught both qualifying blue and black marlin (over 300 lbs. minimum) to help the team take a home a check for a cool $344,700 dollars.

The 22nd annual Los Cabos Billfish Tournament took place from Oct. 11th to 15th, the 19th Bisbee’s Los Cabos Offshore from October 15th to 18th.

Still to come, of course, is the biggest tournament of them all: Bisbee’s Black & Blue, aka The Super Bowl of Fishing and The Richest Fishing Tournament in the World. Last year, Bisbee’s handed out three separate checks of over 1.3 million dollars at the Black and Blue, so there’s no telling how high the prize pool could go this year, at least based on the way each succeeding tournament seems to get bigger and better.

The 40th annual Bisbee’s Black and Blue starts today, so we should know soon just how many teams have registered and how much money may be on the line. Could the 2020 event break the record purse of 4.165 million in 2006, which was and still is the largest payout in sportfishing history?

Based on what’s happened so far this year, don’t bet against it.

The record numbers, it must be noted, should in no way suggest Bisbee’s has ignored the Coronavirus. Indeed, new safety protocols have been in place since the first tournament, the East Cape Offshore, got the go ahead over the summer. In addition to social distancing between boats and virtual captain’s meetings, only one team member has been able to be present at weigh-ins (the one who caught the fish in most cases), with a mask on. An increased focus on pre-registration has also helped to limit personal contact, and the weigh station has been moved from Puerto Paraiso to the cruise ship dock to discourage the forming of crowds to “ooh” and” aah” over incoming catches.

No one would argue it hasn’t been a strange year. But if you love fishing and love competing for huge prizes, it has at least been a great year by those standards. And the best may be yet to come.

Fishing Tournaments Take Center Stage: October Events in Los Cabos

If you love fishing, there is no better place to spend the month of October than in sunny Cabo San Lucas. Not only does the Land’s End destination at the southernmost tip of the Baja California peninsula enjoy peak conditions for its famed marlin fishing during the coming month, but several tournaments take advantage of this fact to offer enormous payouts to anglers who bring in the biggest catches.

Bisbee’s Black & Blue marlin fishing tournament is the biggest of these events, and the one most likely to turn otherwise unassuming fishermen into millionaires overnight. There’s a reason, after all, they call it the “Super Bowl of Fishing.” Last year, three separate teams walked away with checks in excess of one million dollars, and the prize pool is expected to be every bit as large in 2020.

The Black & Blue is one of two tournaments Bisbee’s organizes during the month of October in Cabo San Lucas. The other is the Los Cabos Offshore, and although not quite as lucrative as the B&B, it’s still one of only a handful of fishing tournaments in the world to feature total payouts in excess of a million dollars.

There are a few changes this year where Bisbee’s is concerned. The traditional weigh station at Puerto Paraiso shopping mall and entertainment center has now been moved to the API Cruise Ship Pier, a site formerly used for awards banquets. As part of the safety policies instituted as a result of Covid-19, there has been an increased focus on pre-registration to limit personal contact. The good news, however, is that Los Cabos continues to loosen Covid-19 restrictions as cases markedly decline.

Bisbee’s fundraiser this year for their Fish and Wildlife Conservation Fund will be an online auction that runs during both tournaments, Los Cabos Offshore and Black & Blue. Auction proceeds will benefit the Green Scholarship Program that provides underprivileged Los Cabos students with college scholarship opportunities, Bisbee’s revolutionary new RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) Tagging Program and the Nkwe Tactical Training Academy wildlife anti-poaching program in South Africa.

Los Cabos Billfish Tournament – Oct. 11 – 15

Bisbee’s two cash-rich tournaments get most of the publicity, but the Los Cabos Billfish Tournament also sends out a siren call to big-game fishermen eager for big-money prizes and jackpots. The three tournaments combined in 2018 to pay out over $5,500,925. The 22nd annual LCBT has three entry levels: a $5,000 base entry for each 6-person team; daily jackpots for the largest tuna, wahoo and dorado; and daily billfish release jackpots. Optional marlin only jackpots are available to teams that paid base entry (this year with two levels). Registration and the post-tournament gala awards ceremony will both be hosted by Playa Grande, a Solmar Group resort.

Bisbee’s Los Cabos Offshore – October 15 – 18

Commonly known as “Little Bisbee’s,” to differentiate it from the “Big Bisbee’s” Black & Blue marlin fishing tournament that also takes place each October in Los Cabos, the Los Cabos Offshore dates back to 2002, and is considered a more laid-back, charity focused endeavor than the Black & Blue. Cash prizes are awarded to the teams with the three biggest qualifying fish in the game and billfish categories at the LCO, and large amounts of fish/meals are always donated to local families in need. Base entry for teams is $1,500 U.S., with $22,500 necessary for “across the board” entry in all jackpots and challenges. Team Predator took home the most money in 2019, pocketing a cool $445,825 for a few days of “work”.

Bisbee’s Black & Blue – October 20 – 24

Oft billed as “The World’s Richest Fishing Tournament,” thanks to its million dollar payouts, this marlin fishing tournament originally premiered in 1981, and remains to this day the highest profile annual event in Los Cabos. The $4.165 million payout in 2006 was and still is the largest in sportfishing history. Base entry for this millionaire maker is $5,000 U.S. per team, and requires a $71,500 U.S. outlay across all categories, jackpots and challenges. Prizes are awarded for the top five catches of black and blue marlin, assuming they meet the minimum standards (300 lbs.). Three separate checks of over 1.3 million dollars were handed out in 2019.

A Hot Time in Los Cabos: Summer Fishing Tournaments to Look Forward to in 2020

For as long as there have been tourists coming to Los Cabos, Fishing has been one of the chief attractions.

Each year the allure gets a little stronger, in fact, as new regional fishing tournaments appear, and the established ones up their prize money to stay competitive. Bisbee’s Black & Blue in October is the most famous of the local competitions thanks to its multi-million dollar purses, but that legendary event comes near the end of the tournament season in Los Cabos.

The season actually starts in June, with the half-dozen summer tournaments of note allowing motivated anglers the chance to warm up before the potentially ultra-lucrative autumn tournaments roll around.

Don’t be fooled, however. The summer tournaments offer sizeable cash payouts and prizes as well. With that in mind, here are the highlights of the fishing tournament calendar for summer 2020:

7th Annual Pelagic Triple Crown of Fishing Tournament/Cabo Summer Slam – June 11 – 13

Bisbee’s isn’t the only organizer of big money fishing tournaments in Los Cabos. Water sports apparel maker non pareil Pelagic hosts its 7th annual Summer Slam this June, inviting anglers to compete for over 350,000 in prize money. After a shotgun start in front of Land’s End, teams compete to haul in trophy size marlin, sailfish, tuna, dorado and wahoo during the multi-day tournament. Base entry is $$3,500 per team, or $19,500 across-the-board for all jackpots and prizes.

24th Annual Stars and Stripes Golf and Fishing Tournament – June 24 – 28

During the 20+ years of its existence, the annual Stars and Stripes’ golf and fishing tournament has raised over 36 million dollars for youth focused charities. But it’s not simply a tournament or a charity benefit…more like a complete lifestyle experience. Participants stay at the luxurious Hilton Los Cabos; go big-game sportfishing for dorado, wahoo, tuna, sailfish, swordfish, and black, blue and striped marlin; play golf at some of the world’s best golf courses; and enjoy spectacular live entertainment nightly (this year’s headliner is legendary rock band Cheap Trick).

16th Annual East Cape Dorado Shootout – July 18

This is one of the largest fishing tournaments in Southern Baja, with an average turnout of 130 teams each year. What makes it so popular? The opportunity to win a brand new, fully-loaded 2020 Volkswagen 4×4 Amarok pickup truck, of course. The rules are simple, catch the biggest dorado on July 18th and you win the truck. There will also be great prizes for 2nd and 3rd place, as well as for the largest tuna and largest wahoo caught that day. The beauty of this one-day tournament format is that anyone can win. After the tournament, Palmas De Cortez in Los Barriles will host the award ceremony, which is unlike any in Baja, with dinner, music, a raffle, and a combined $200,000 in cash and prizes given away.

21st Annual Bisbee’s East Cape Offshore – August 4 – 8

The East Cape Offshore is the first of three Bisbee’s fishing tournaments that take place in Baja California Sur each year. The ECO is always first, and kicks off Bisbee’s 2020 series starting August 1st. Cash prizes will be awarded to the top three qualifiers in marlin, tuna and dorado categories, with the awards celebration taking place afterwards at the Hotel Buena Vista. Base entry for the event is $1500 per team, with additional fees for daily jackpots ($22,500 “across the board”). Prize money is based on entry fees received, with 60% going to the billfish winners, and 20% each to top tuna and dorado anglers. Team El Suertudo took home the largest payout in tournament history in 2019, earning a healthy $619,800 for a 381 lb. blue marlin.

4th Annual East Cape Gold Cup Wahoo Jackpot Tournament – August 22

Similar to the East Cape Dorado Shootout with its drive-away first prize, the biggest wahoo caught on August 22nd will earn one lucky fisherman a showroom fresh 2020 Volkswagen Golf and a Suzuki 140 horsepower four-stroke engine. In total, over $100,000 in cash and prizes are up for grabs, including great raffle prizes, return trips, fishing outings, and much more. The entry fee is only $500 per team and includes dinner at the awards ceremony.

Fishing widows needn’t feel left out, by the way. In fact, they’re eligible for a tournament the men aren’t. That would be the Ladies Only Fishing Tournament hosted by the Hotel Palmas de Cortez in Los Barriles, the 2nd edition of which takes place July 23rd to 27th, with a return trip on the line for the winning team.

High Stakes Fishing Season Heats Up in Los Cabos

Who wants to be a millionaire? No, we’re not talking about a game show. We’re talking about Cabo San Lucas’ premier series of fishing tournaments, one of which–Bisbee’s Black & Blue–annually pays out cash prizes in the seven figure range. And wouldn’t you rather be fishing anyway?

Last year’s winner of the Black and Blue, angler Charlie Lee and his Chinito Bonito crew, took home a check for over $3,000,000 after landing a 510 lb. black marlin on the first day of the tournament, besting 113 other teams. This year, the stakes are expected to be even higher, with the world’s best big-game anglers descending on Cabo San Lucas during the month of October for the Black & Blue, as well as Bisbee’s Los Cabos Offshore. The latter, commonly known as “Little Bisbee’s”, is scheduled for October 17 – 20, with the Black & Blue, or “Big Bisbee’s”, following Oct. 22 – 26.

Bisbee’s actually hosts a trio of tournaments in Los Cabos each year. The first, the East Cape Offshore, traditionally kicks off the season in early August, and is generally a bellwether for participation and prizes when the headline events come around in October. And if that indicator holds true, this year is going to set new records across the board.

Team El Suertudo, which won the top prize at the 20th annual ECO with a 381 lb. blue marlin, was rewarded with a check for $619,800. That’s the largest winning payout in the history of the event, which each year draws world-class fishermen to Buena Vista on Los Cabos’ picturesque East Cape.

Topping the record at the Los Cabos Offshore may not be so easy, since it was just set in 2018–the 18th edition of that benchmark event–with over a million dollars in prize money doled out plus the chance to make a real difference for local families. That’s because the LCO has maintained its long-running commitment to charity, even as the prize money has increased dramatically in recent years. Last year, for instance, the equivalent of over 8600 meals was donated to those in need.

There’s no need to worry about charitable endeavors at the Black & Blue. This one is just for pride, everlasting glory and a big boatload of cash. That’s how it got its nicknames: “The World’s Richest Fishing Tournament” and “The Super Bowl of Fishing.”

The biggest of big-game tournaments, this marlin fishing tournament originally premiered in 1981 (when the purse was a mere $10,000), and remains to this day the highest profile annual event in Los Cabos. The $4.165 million payout in 2006 was and still is the largest in the history of tournament fishing, although last year’s kitty of $3.693 was nothing to sneeze at, particularly since it only took team Chinito Bonito one hour and 37 minutes to boat their winning marlin.

We’re not real good at math, but that works out to somewhere around 2.4 million dollars per hour! In other words, good work if you can get it.

Base entry for this legendary event is $5,000 U.S. per team, and requires a $71,500 U.S. outlay across all categories, jackpots and challenges. Prizes are awarded for the top five catches of black and blue marlin, assuming they meet the minimum standard of 300 pounds.

Got the picture? Good. Then we’ll repeat our first question. Who wants to be a millionaire? Remember, even if you don’t win the LCO or B&B, you still get to spend 10 in Cabo San Lucas, and go fishing for marlin on five of them. That’s definitely worth something.

We won’t mention second place, which in last year’s Black & Blue was a measly $544,250 dollars.

We will mention, however, the Los Cabos Billfish Tournament, which is the biggest non-Bisbee’s sponsored tournament in October, and fairly lucrative in its own right. Last year’s overall payout, after all, was a respectable $642,300.

This year’s version is scheduled for Oct. 13 – 17, so might as well tell your travel agent to go ahead and make that 14 days in Cabo San Lucas.

30 Days of Land’s End Happenings – November Events in Los Cabos

Few months in Los Cabos are more exciting than November, thanks to a huge variety of highly anticipated events, from holidays and cultural celebrations to destination lifestyle experiences and lucrative sporting competitions.

The eleventh month of 2018 boasts no less than three major holidays, including Day of the Dead (one of the most visually striking and spiritually profound of all Mexican remembrances), Revolution Day (which honors the victories won by rebel leaders like Pancho Villa and Emiliano Zapata), and of course Thanksgiving, which has been imported from the U.S. for the benefit of turkey and cranberry sauce starved visitors.

The red carpet glamour of the Los Cabos International Film Festival makes it one of the cape cities’ signature cultural celebrations, although the return of the seasonal Thursday night Art Walk in San Jose del Cabo promises more lasting interest, since it runs through the end of June 2019.

Sporting aficionados, meanwhile, can choose between cash-rich fishing tournaments like the WON Los Cabos Tuna Jackpot, high-stakes golf at the Adidas Golf Invitational, endurance contests like the Ironman 70.3 half-triathlon, and off-road racing in the iconic Baja 1000.

There is something, in other words, to appeal to every traveler’s taste.

Dia de Muertos  (Oct. 31 – Nov. 2)

Mexico observes many holidays, but none quite so visually distinctive and emotionally resonant as El Dia de Muertos (Day of the Dead). This holiday to honor deceased family and friends dates back to the time of the Aztecs – who dedicated a festival to Mictecacihuatl, queen of the underworld, each August – but now takes place contemporaneously with the Catholic observance of Allhallowtide. Traditionally, it is thought that the souls of children return on Nov. 1, and the souls of adults on Nov. 2. Families will often build ofrendas (altars) in their homes, welcoming back the spirits of the departed with some of their favorite food and drinks, as well as special holiday themed items like cempasuchil flowers (Aztec marigolds), calaveras de azucar (candy skulls), and a sweet bread called pan de muerto.

San Jose del Cabo Art Walk  (Nov. 1, 8, 15, 22 and 29)

The historic Distrito del Arte in San Jose del Cabo takes center stage each Thursday evening during high tourist season – November through June – when residents and visitors alike are invited to stroll its cobblestone streets and peruse the many eclectic fine arts galleries. Art Walk hours are 5 to 9 p.m, when the neighborhood comes alive with wine, cheese and guided tours, as well as colorful street artists and strolling mariachis. A chance to check out San Jose’s recent downtown makeover is another reason to make the Thursday night pilgrimage.

20th Annual WON Los Cabos Tuna Jackpot Tournament  (Nov. 7 – 10)

The Western Outdoor News has a long history with Los Cabos, dating back to the 1950s, when Baja columnist Ray Cannon’s rave fishing reviews helped put the area on the destination travel map. The WON Tuna Jackpot is one of the larger fishing tournaments in Cabo San Lucas, a fixture of the autumn sporting calendar that follows hard on the heels of the Los Cabos Billfish and Bisbee’s Los Cabos Offshore and Black & Blue Tournaments. Last year’s event, the 19th edition, saw 147 teams competed across 11 events for over $677,000 in prize money. Even bigger things are expected this year.

Los Cabos International Film Festival  (Nov. 7 – 11)

The Los Cabos International Film Festival returns for its 7th edition on Nov. 7, with an inaugural red carpet gala and screening at the Pabellon Cultural de la Republica in Cabo San Lucas. The celebrity and paparazzi studded galas receive much of the attention, but the heart of the festival consists of curated screenings at Cinemex Theaters at Puerto Paraíso, and behind the scenes conferences and programs designed to promote mutually beneficial collaborations between the North American film industries. Thus, the LCIFF’s long-running tagline: “Come See What the Neighbors Are Doing.” Winners of prizes for significant achievements in cinema receive the coveted Ballena de Los Cabos, the whale-shaped award created by jeweler Daniel Espinosa that was first unveiled in 2016.

Dia de la Revolucion  (Nov. 20)

Revolution Day is a national holiday in Mexico that remembers the revolution from 1910 t0 1920, a civil war that began as a revolt against over three decades of dictatorial rule from President and caudillo supremo Porfirio Diaz, and continued as rebel factions fought to control the country’s future direction. It began when Francisco Madero published his Plan de San Luis, urging the people to rise up in arms on November 20, 1910, and continued under revolutionary leaders like Emiliano Zapata and Francisco “Pancho” Villa. Revolution Day is one of five Fiestas Patrias (Patriotic Holidays) celebrated annually, and is commemorated with a three-day weekend and parades across Mexico, including cavalcades in cape cities Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo.

Dia de Accion de Gracias  (Nov. 22)

No, Mexico does not honor a time in the distant past when pilgrims sat down to share a feast with the indigenous peoples. But in Los Cabos – home to many American and Canadian residents, both of whom celebrate their own versions of Thanksgiving – the holiday is observed, if mainly at special dinners or functions for residents or travelers from Mexico’s two North American neighbors. Canada’s version takes place Oct. 8, 2018; and is a time for parties and special menus at Canadian owned bars like Hooliganz in Cabo San Lucas. The U.S. version, called Dia de Accion de Gracias in Spanish, is much more acknowledged locally, and dinners featuring turkey and traditional fixings will be offered at restaurants around Los Cabos on Thursday, Nov. 22.

Life Luxe Jazz & Golf Experience Coming to Los Cabos in November

The Life Luxe Jazz concert series, a unique luxury cultural experience, will be held Nov. 1 – 4 at Quivira Los Cabos, an upscale resort community situated on the Pacific Coast north of Cabo San Lucas. Pueblo Bonito Pacifica Golf & Spa Resort, an acclaimed adults-only beachfront hotel, will serve as the host site for this one-of-a-kind lifestyle event.

According to concert organizers, “Life Luxe Jazz…brings people together with common interests in music, culture and exceptional cuisine, with the goal of building bridges across borders.” To support cultural exchange, jazz workshops will be hosted to enrich the lives of and introduce jazz culture to Los Cabos youth through education and engagement with jazz artists.

Patrons can register to participate in the Life Luxe Jazz Golf Tournament at Quivira Golf Club, a spectacular Jack Nicklaus-designed course that scales the heights at Land’s End. The venue, named Golf Magazine’s “Best New International Course” when it opened in 2014, was recently voted to Golf Digest’s elite list of the “World’s 100 Greatest Golf Courses.” Marked by sheer cliffs, massive dunes and desert foothills, the 7,085-yard, par-72 layout offers breathtaking thrills, unforgettable challenges and more oceanfront exposure than any other course in Los Cabos. In a destination revered for its unique mountain-desert-ocean setting, Quivira, an aesthetic tour de force with panoramic views of the Pacific from every hole, stands apart as one of the most daring, eclectic courses Nicklaus has ever built.

Registration for the tournament, scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 3 at 7:30 a.m., is $295 per player. Fee includes green fees, golf cart, unlimited food and drinks (Baja cuisine, top-shelf tequila) at the club’s four comfort stations, swag bags and tournament awards. Completing the experience at Quivira is a thatched-roof clubhouse that offers a large rectangular bar, a casual steakhouse and ample outdoor seating overlooking the sea. Tournament winners will receive their awards and be recognized on stage at the concert event the night of Nov. 3.

The star-studded line-up will be led by Grammy-winning contemporary jazz and R&B singer Norman Brown, who has sold nearly two million albums. Other artists slated to perform, all of whom have reached the top of Billboard’s smooth jazz charts, include Mindi Abair, Bobby Caldwell, Boney James, Michael Manson, Keiko Matsui, Maysa, Meli’sa Morgan, Najee, Gregory Porter, Lin Rountree, Kirk Whalum and Zoe Wood.

The all-day concerts will be held on an expansive stretch of pristine beach in front of Pueblo Bonito Pacifica. Food and drink stations will be plentiful. The resort’s large circular firepits, artfully carved into the sand by the hotel staff, will be lit in the evening. In addition, several free concerts will be scheduled for the residents of Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo.

A variety of ticket packages are currently on sale, ranging from luxury open seating, exclusive cabana loungers and stage-front sectional sofa loungers.  Elite VIP climate-controlled beachfront viewing areas in The Towers at Pacifica, an exclusive “resort within a resort,” are also available.

The four-day festival will feature a live jazz sunset cruise on Nov. 2 spotlighting the music of Ernest Quarles and Lindsey Webster. Guests can enjoy a specially prepared menu, multiple bars, and close-up views of El Arco (The Arch), Cabo’s iconic rock formation at Land’s End.

Cabo Rocks! The Best Music Festivals and Fiestas in Los Cabos

In Mexico there is always music. You hear it everywhere….not just at bars or nightclubs, but in shops and restaurants,
and in the streets from wandering mariachis.

Music is so much a part of the fabric of the Mexican experience that virtually all events can be characterized, to a greater or lesser extent, as “music festivals.”

That’s particularly true in Los Cabos. For instance….

Bisbee’s Black & Blue, the world’s richest fishing tournament, kept anglers reeling long after the final weigh-in last year thanks to a concert from David Pack’s Legends Live, a collection of musicians from some of the biggest rock bands of the 1070s and 80s.

Sabor a Cabo, the Los Cabos region’s biggest food festival, has boasted appearances from top chefs and from Mexican supergroup Mana and soul/funk legends Earth, Wind & Fire, among others.

The Stars & Stripes Golf & Fishing Tournament, similarly, pairs its daytime attractions with some nighttime music from headline-grabbing rock stars like Sammy Hagar and Don Felder of The Eagles. Wherever one turns, in other words – whether to food and wine events, sporting competitions or cultural to-dos – music is there, too.

But while it’s true that every big event in Los Cabos comes complete with music, there are only a dozen or so where music is the unquestioned focus, the centerpiece attraction. Most are rooted in classic rock n’ roll, but a select few showcase other musical styles.

With that in mind, here are five of our favorites:

Sammy Hagar Birthday Bashes at Cabo Wabo Cantina

Every year since 1990, loyal “Redheads” from around the world have flocked to Cabo San Lucas for Sammy Hagar’s Birthday Bashes at Cabo Wabo Cantina. In 2018, the former Van Halen and Montrose celebrates his 71st year on the planet with an all-star cast of visiting musicians – including The Circle members Michael Anthony, Jason Bonham, and Vic Johnson. Shows are scheduled for October 9, 11 and 13. General admission tickets are available to winners of a random drawing, but those who aren’t selected will still have an opportunity to attend, as some dinner show tickets are always made available in early October on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Tropic of Cancer Concert Series

Okay, this one isn’t actually in Los Cabos….but the peninsula’s original pueblo magico, Todos Santos, is only a one-hour drive from Cabo San Lucas, and this event has some serious rock star pedigree….so we’re breaking our own rules.

Former R.E.M. guitarist Peter Buck pioneered jam culture in Todos Santos with this annual music festival, which brought in high-profile musicians for performances at the landmark Hotel California, as well as the town’s picturesque main plaza. Buck’s festival went on hiatus after he made some controversial comments about local politics at the 2016 event, but the music lives on. The freshly minted Tropic of Cancer Concert Series premiered in 2017, and returns for a third outing in 2019, with the now usual all-star lineup appearing January 10th through the 20th.

Jazz Weekend in San Jose del Cabo

This year saw the 6th edition of San José del Cabo Jazz Weekend, a festival dedicated to the freewheeling American musical style held yearly at the popular Plaza del Pescador, an outdoor mall across from San Jose del Cabo’s scenic, resort-lined Playa Hotelera. Plaza del Pescador has only been around for a few years, but has quickly established a reputation for itself as a music venue, thanks to tenants such as Jazz Tapas Café and Rock&Brews, the restaurant chain started by KISS members Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley. Admission is always free for this two-day music fest in February, which features a talented array of jazz musicians. Latin jazz, as might be expected, is particularly well represented.

Fiesta de la Musica

In 1981 a French director of music and culture, inspired by a statistic that claimed half the country’s children played a musical instrument, began dreaming of a way to engage this musical spirit en masse. Soon after, in 1982, the first Fete de la Musique was held in Paris, where it was scheduled to coincide with the summer solstice, the longest day of the year.

Flash forward 36 years, and the Fete de la Musique is no longer solely a French celebration, but a worldwide phenomenon that takes place annually in over 450 cities in 12o countries around the globe. For the past 10 years, that list of cities has included San Jose del Cabo, the oldest and most populous of the two cape cities (Cabo San Lucas is the other) that comprise the modern-day municipality of Los Cabos. In San Jose, however, the celebration is known by its Spanish name, La Fiesta de la Musica.

Over the past decade, the Fiesta de la Musica has become so important and so beloved by the local community that it’s now considered the premier music festival in Los Cabos. Certainly, it’s the most robustly attended, drawing over 25,000 people annually. The 2018 edition featured more than 100 bands and musical acts performing throughout the city’s historic downtown area. Expect the number to rise in June 2019.

International Concert Music Festival in La Paz

Okay, this isn’t technically in Los Cabos either. But if you love classical music, this yearly festival in Baja California Sur’s capital city is definitely worth the two-hour road trip.

Classically trained musicians from countries around the world come together each autumn in beautiful La Paz to provide five nights of memorable music at the elegant Sala de Conciertos, a performance venue in the downtown heart of the city. Featured composers in years past – this year marks the ninth edition – have included Beethoven and Debussy.
