Not-So-Still Life – Looking Forward to A New Season of Art Walk in San Jose del Cabo

The still life is a traditional staple of representational painting, a long-lived genre that allows artists to showcase their own inimitable style as they tackle rather commonplace subject matter like fruit or flowers.

Visitors to San Jose del Cabo will discover the colonial style city – whose name, along with that of sister city Cabo San Lucas, contributes to the Los Cabos moniker used for the municipality at large – is awash in talented painters. But despite its surfeit of artists, many of whom have their own still lifes on display in the historic, gallery-rich Art District, the city’s most famous art work isn’t a painting at all, but rather the Art Walk held weekly during the high tourist season.

Think of it as the not-so-still-life.

Each Thursday evening from November to June, art lovers and those seeking a bit of local color pour into the city, not only flooding the officially designated Distrito del Arte – with its voluminous galleries and charming cobblestone streets – but the better part of the historic downtown area between the hours of 5 and 9 p.m.

Galleries stay open late to publicize featured paintings, sculptures and other artworks; downtown monuments like City Hall and Parroquia San Jose are outlined by colorful lights; arts and crafts makers spread out their wares on tables or along the sidewalks; and wandering musicians serenade passersby strolling hand in hand, or those taking a breather at local bars and restaurants.

There are plenty of both, by the way. San Jose del Cabo is home to the original Baja Brewing Company and dozens of superb restaurants, from Mexican traditionalists like Jazmin’s and La Lupita to internationally representative eateries like La Dolce. But the true Thursday night magnets are the galleries which line the well-lit streets of the historic Art District. There’s Galeria de Ida Victoria, which in addition to hosting the region’s finest custom framing studio, also represents some of the finest contemporary Mexican artists. Patricia Mendoza Gallery and Casa Dahlia also spotlight the work of contemporary Mexican artists and artisans; traditional Mexican folk art like glassware and jewelry is on display at La Sacristia; and Mata Ortiz Gallery offers some wonderful examples of its namesake pottery style, whose history dates back over a thousand years but was reinvigorated by modern Chihuahua master Juan Quezada. Those with a more international orientation, meanwhile, can ponder the “sacred abstract art” at Dharmesh Anand, or be awestruck by Muvezi’s visually arresting work from Shona stone sculptors in Zimbabwe.

These and other galleries gladly welcome perambulators to experience the city’s thriving art scene (only Tijuana and Todos Santos rival San José as Baja art meccas), keeping their doors open well after dark, and often inviting artists to interact with guests and answer questions about their work. Cheese and wine, of course, often make their inevitable appearances as well; sip and snack staples in any bohemian milieu.

All in all, it’s a complete feast for the senses, and the 2018-2019 Art Walk season promises to be the biggest and best yet, with a fresh slate of exhibitions and fresh new looks at San Jose’s dramatic downtown makeover.

Los Cabos Fishing Report – September 16, 2018

We are starting to see the first wave of early fall anglers arriving, still only moderate numbers, but more people than we have seen in recent weeks. This is now the four year anniversary of when Hurricane Odile devastated the Los Cabos area. This week the weather has been calm, last week we saw some isolated unpredictable thundershowers that did bring some fairly heavy rainfall amounts in some areas. No new storms that we see presently on the forecast, but tropical systems can develop rapidly this time of year, another few weeks of the normal storm season, so we will be watching closely. Meanwhile the Philippines is now enduring the battering of a Super Typhon and the East Coast of the United Sates is dealing with Hurricane Florence. All is quiet in the Eastern Pacific at this time. Winds were very light this week, swells were moderate, supplies of sardinas were sufficient and anglers were enjoying great ocean conditions, though days were still very warm and humidity is high, as it normally is during the month of September.

Anglers were using both sardinas and strips of squid, some chihuil also now being caught for bait as well. Yellowfin tuna were found from the Gordo Banks to Iman and San Luis. Smaller football tuna mainly being found on the Gordo Banks, though on Iman and San Luis the yellowfin tuna were avenging 50 to 70 lb. Finicky at times, lots of patience and persistence needed, drift fishing while chumming, dealing with lots of triggerfish and needlefish stealing baits. At times tuna could be seen boiling and jumping out of the water, but proved to have lock jaw, but then would go on the bite sporadically, some days early, sometimes much later in the day. Anglers were doing well to land one, two or three of these quality tuna.

Only a few dorado being found, most of these were under ten pounds, most of these a bit closer to shore than where the tuna were schooling. Wahoo were very few and far between, though every few days we heard about someone catching one. Only a few small roosterfish found close to shore. Off the bottom we did not see any consistent action, though a couple of nice cabrilla in the 40 to 50 pound class were accounted for. A handful of red snapper, bonito and a couple of dogtooth snapper in the 20 to 30 lb. range.

Heard of great striped marlin action on the Pacific side of Cabo San Lucas, our local grounds produced scattered billfish action for sailfish, striped and blue marlin.

The combined panga fleets launching out of La Playita, Puerto Los Cabos Marina sent out approximately 62 charters for this week. Anglers reported a fish count of: 9  striped marlin, 3 sailfish, 2 blue marlin, 3 wahoo, 14 dorado, 105 yellowfin tuna, 16 bonito, 2 barred pargo, 14 red snapper, 2 dogtooth snapper, 12 cabrilla and 75 triggerfish.

Los Cabos Fishing Report September 2, 2018

Light crowds of visitors now arriving, many families are now busy preparing for the start of the new school semesters, also waiting for cooler weather and for the tropical storm season to pass. At this time we are seeing a flare up of tropical storm development, we have Hurricanes Miriam and Norman, now farther off to the west, not impacting land, but increasing local humidity, now forming to the south we will have Olivia and Paul within the next week, looks like Paul might be the system the comes closest to land. Forecast do call for some scattered thundershowers in the coming week. More moisture is needed, but everyone is hoping that we do not see any damaging high winds, the next several weeks is when all eyes will be focused on the tropical weather forecasts.

Anglers were finding sardinas a bit harder to find, these schooling baitfish had been found off the northern shoreline near Vinorama, then off of the San Jose del Cabo Estuary and now they are finding them off of Chileno. This means bait netters are back tracking south, then back towards the marina in order to supply the sportfishing fleet, which have been fishing in the direction of the Gordo Banks, La Fortuna, Iman and San Luis Banks. Other bait option continue to be slabs of squid, also some skipjack, bolito and chihuil be found on the offshore grounds and used for slow trolling.

Main species being found were the yellowfin tuna, hitting on the strips of squid and sardinas, ranging in sizes from footballs, up to 80 pounds. Fish were finicky, some days being more active early, other days later in the day, moving around to the various spots, trying to find some cooperative fish. Catches ranged from one or two yellowfin, up to ten. Matter of being on the right sport, at the right time and having sufficient supplies of bait. This is normally the time of year where we see the largest of cow sized yellowfin tuna start to lurk around the local high spots. There were a couple of reports in recent days of large fish being lost after extended battles on the grounds near the Gordo Banks, presumably these were thought to be big tuna. The same Gordo Banks is now producing some action for larger marlin, including one fish landed mid-week from a 22 ft. panga that was an estimated 500 lb. black marlin. Best chances for these larger marlin is to slow troll larger sized baits, lots of patience is needed, but rewards can be high.

Only an occasional dorado being found, most of these under 15 lb. found fairly close to shore. Water is now clear and blue within one mile of shore, ocean currents are warming, now averaging 82 to 86 degrees. Moderate swells, could be increasing with all of the storm activity to the south, will depend on how close these system pass off of the Southern Baja Peninsula.

Limited bottom action, a few snapper, bonito, cabrilla, amberjack, but most charters are targeting the finicky tuna, which has proved to be the best bet for getting a nice amount of fresh fillets.

The combined panga fleets launching out of La Playita, Puerto Los Cabos Marina sent out approximately 51 charters for this week. Anglers reported a fish count of: 1 dogtooth snapper, 1 black marlin, 3 sailfish, 2 striped marlin, 18 dorado, 108 yellowfin tuna, 12 bonito, 6 yellow snapper, 5 barred pargo, 3 amberjack, 8 red snapper, 11 cabrilla (leopard grouper), 6 roosterfish and 32 triggerfish.

Los Cabos Fishing Report – August 19, 2018

Last week we had a series of tropical storms develop and head off to the west, T.S. storm John did leave several inches of rain in our region, but no serious damage was felt. Things quieted way down this week, only Hurricane Lane is brewing now and is already far off to the west with no chance of making impact on the Baja Peninsula. There are still another six weeks or so for the Eastern Pacific storm season, we are all hoping that no major storms make direct landfall. Light to moderate crowds are now visiting the Los Cabos area, be prepared for warm and humid weather that is the normal pattern this time of year. There is now some heavier swell activity, be careful along the beach stretches, also more wind this week, swirling around from different directions, but it settled down over the weekend, never did keep the sportfishing fleets from reaching their normal grounds.

Anglers were using strips of squid and also this week the sardinas rebounded and on most days there were chances at obtaining the sardinas from fleets that found these schooling baitfish farther to the north, they were meeting charters on the fishing grounds. Always a better option to have both the squid and sardinas if possible, particularly when drift fishing for yellowfin tuna.

Yellowfin tuna was the most common gamefish being found, main area was centered on the Iman Bank, but some charters were scouting out the grounds such as San Luis and the Gordo Banks with mixed success. Drift fish while chumming was the most productive technique, others did well slow trolling chihuil baits, but they proved harder to obtain, also if you happened to jig up a bolito that was almost a guaranteed strike. Sizes on the yellowfin ranged from small footballs up to 80 lb., average daily catches varied from one or two, up to five or six, mixed in were bonito and skipjack. These tuna were still a bit finicky, striking best on 40 or 50 lb. leaders. There were some hungry aggressive sea lions getting their share of hooked up fish. The silky shark problem has diminished for the time being.

Very few dorado this past week, also noting to report on wahoo either. Bottom action was limited due to swift current, misc. snappers, pargo, amberjack, cabrilla, but no numbers to speak of, the highlight were a couple of nice 30 to 40 lb. class dogtooth snapper. These larger snapper were taken on the same tuna grounds while drift fishing baits near the surface.

Billfish was spotty and mainly found 10 miles or more offshore, a scattering of blue marlin hook ups while trolling lures, with a couple landed and released in the 200 lb. range, did hear of 300 b. blues caught out of Cab San Lucas, also we heard of at least one large black marlin that was hooked up near the Gordo Banks. A few sailfish and striped marlin also being encountered.

Inshore roosterfish and jack action has pretty stalled out, not much going on that and the schools of mullet have vanished as well, this is the normal pattern for these species, inshore always slows way down the later part of August and into the fall season.

The combined panga fleets launching out of La Playita, Puerto Los Cabos Marina sent out approximately 61 charters for this week. Anglers reported a fish count of: 2 dogtooth snapper, 2 sailfish, 2 striped marlin, 2 blue marlin, 15 dorado, 1 wahoo, 118 yellowfin tuna, 32 bonito, 3 surgeon fish, 7 yellow snapper, 4 amberjack, 13 red snapper,5 cabrilla (leopard grouper) and 55 triggerfish.

4 Unforgettable “Only in Cabo” Experiences Everyone Should Try at Least Once

Every destination worth its salt offers at least a few signature experiences, adventures or indulgences that–whether through microclimate, accident of geography, or endemic flora and fauna–are only found there. That’s certainly true of Los Cabos. In fact, the hardest part of coming up with an “only in Cabo” checklist of amazing once-in-a-lifetime things to do, is figuring out where to start.

With that in mind, here are four unforgettable experiences every Los Cabos visitor should try at least once.

Marlin Fishing

The region’s charms have multiplied exponentially during the past 50 years, from pampering spas to championship-level golf courses, but fishing remains king. The charter boasts lining the Cabo San Lucas Marina are a testament to this fact. So too are the big-money fishing tournaments that draw anglers from around the world.

One doesn’t necessarily have to earn an over-sized check–literally and figuratively–to establish their local bona fides, although annual tournaments like Bisbee’s Black & Blue have turned more than a few fishermen into legends.

The real prize, however, is the experience itself. Imagine being strapped into the fighting chair on the aft-deck of a fishing boat, matching your strength and cunning against that of some truly incredible undersea creatures. The largest marlin ever caught off Cabo San Lucas weighed in at just over 1000 lbs., but even if you only get your hooks into one half that size, or a quarter of that size, you’ll have an adventure you can talk about for the rest of your life.

Blue, black and striped marlin all teem in the offshore waters, and game fishermen will also delight in reeling in delicious food fish like tuna and dorado (mahi-mahi).

Baja 1000 Style Off-Road Racing

The most famous sporting event in Baja is also the most famous off-road racing event in the world: the legendarily rugged Baja 1000. So devilish and dangerous was this annual off-road competition through the untamed heart of the peninsula–the most common route was a snaking trek from Ensenada to La Paz–that by the late 1960s and early 1970s it became a badge of honor, one that attracted Hollywood stars of the era like Paul Newman, Steve McQueen and James Garner. Even traditional motorsports stars like Indy 500 winner Parnelli Jones and 7-time NASCAR Cup champion Jimmie Johnson felt the need to try it, as if driving fast over paved roads wasn’t enough of a challenge.

Nowadays, you don’t have to commit to 1000 miles to experience the thrills and metaphorical chills of off-road driving in Baja. Numerous Los Cabos based activities companies offer dune buggy adventures across beach, desert and mountain terrains, and one local adventure provider even offers extended jaunts in actual Baja 1000 style race cars. As a matter of fact, they’ll even let you enter one of the regional SCORE sponsored races, and provide in-race communications and other technical support. All you need to enjoy this signature experience is plenty of nerve and a valid credit card number.

Swimming with Giants

The world’s youngest sea, the Sea of Cortez, is also one of the most vibrant, teeming with large sea life and colorful tableaus.  For a true once-in-a-lifetime, “only in Cabo” adventure, visitors can dive one of the oldest and largest living coral reefs in North America, at Cabo Pulmo on the Los Cabos municipality’s picturesque East Cape. Cabo Pulmo’s reef is part of a protected marine sanctuary with the highest concentration of marine life in the Sea of Cortez.

Offshore islands in the Revillagigedos chain–roughly 250 miles south of Cabo San Lucas–offers even more amazing encounters with large pelagic creatures like great white sharks and leaping dolphins and manta rays, but require week-long dive trips aboard specially equipped boats.

But for those who want to go really big, Baja California Sur’s capital city of La Paz is the premier place to swim side-by-side with whale sharks. There is no risk in swimming with these gentle giants, since they subsist solely on plankton. But they are big–the largest fish in the world, in fact–reaching up to 40 feet in length, and weighing as much as 47,000 pounds.

The Summer Sports Season Heats Up: July Events in Los Cabos

The 2018 fishing season in Los Cabos started with June’s Cabo Summer Slam, AKA the Pelagic Triple Crown of Fishing,
but really heats up in July with three of the region’s signature events.

The Capes’ biggest tennis competition, the ATP sponsored Abierto Los Cabos (or Los Cabos Open), also returns, welcoming in the world’s number four ranked men’s player, Juan Martin del Potro, alongside previous winners.

22nd Annual Stars and Stripes Golf and Fishing Tournament (June 28 to July 1)

Golf and fishing provide the competitive tournament aspect of the 22nd annual Stars and Stripes, but there are also beach days, spa visits, nightly dinners, and music from some of the world’s most recognizable performers. The 22nd edition of what amounts to the complete Cabo lifestyle experience – which also raises money for children’s charities – is scheduled to return June 28.

Of all its attractions, fishing has proved to be most enduringly popular part of Stars & Stripes. No surprise, really, given that the tourism industries for cape cities Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo were built on big-game sportfishing. The tournament launches from beautiful Chileno Bay, with participating anglers vying to bag the biggest tuna, dorado, wahoo, sailfish, and blue, black and striped marlin. This year start times have been pushed back to allow a more vacation-like approach.

Golf, too, is a major draw. Participants this year have the choice of nine or 18-hole tournament outings at Puerto Los Cabos, which currently boasts 27 spectacular holes from champion golfers Jack “The Golden Bear” Nicklaus and Greg “The Great White Shark” Norman. Nine of the holes at Puerto Los Cabos are brand new, so tournament entrants will be among the first to play them.

Nightly musical entertainment is also a distinguishing feature of Stars & Stripes. This year the headliner is Don Felder, former lead guitarist for the Eagles, and a co-writer of the iconic song Hotel California. Plenty of other acts are also on tap, including The Downtown Band, and the festivities will once again be hosted by Shawn Parr, AKA “The Ambassador of Country Music” and “The Voice of the Golden Globes.”

14th Annual East Cape Dorado Shootout (July 21)

Since 2005, the beautiful East Cape community of Los Barriles has been hosting a one-day dorado fishing shootout. Dorado, for the uninitiated, is the Spanish word for what fishermen in the Western U.S. call mahi-mahi, and people in the Eastern U.S. typically refer to as dolphin or dolphinfish.

By any name, it’s a delicious food fish; and by any standards, the East Cape Shootout is one of the most popular annual fishing tournaments in Los Cabos, with an average turnout of about 130 teams per year.

Team entry for this year’s tournament, to be held July 21, is $500. That’s the ante for a shot at a new Volkswagen Amarok pickup truck and other prizes. Optional side jackpots can also be lucrative. Last year, jackpot purses alone totaled over $126,000.

3rd Annual ATP Los Cabos Open of Tennis  (July 30 to August 4)

Los Cabos is justifiably famed for its booming golf scene, but the cape cities have also proved fertile for golf’s traditional country club partner, tennis.

The most high-profile example of this is the Los Cabos Open, an ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) sponsored tournament hosted each summer near Cabo San Lucas. Two of the world’s top 10 ranked men, American Jack Sock and Argentine Juan Martin del Potro, have already committed for the 2018 event.

The Los Cabos Open (or Abierto Los Cabos as it is known is Spanish) is one of two ATP events held annually in Mexico, the other being the Mexican Open in Acapulco. The first Los Cabos Open tournament in 2016 featured 13 of the world’s 50 best players, and was won by hard serving Croatian Ivo Karlovic, who defeated Spanish star Feliciano Lopez in the final. The match had historic dimensions, as it featured the oldest finalists in an ATP event since 1977. Last year, American Sam Querrey accomplished the first Mexican Double, winning both the country’s professional tournaments in the same year. Juan Martin del Potro won in Acapulco a few weeks ago, so another Mexican Double is potentially in play this year.

In addition to Sock and del Potro, world number 20 Fabio Fognini, and 38th ranked Lopez have also confirmed. The defending Queen’s Club champion and a former French Open doubles champion, Lopez has appeared at all of the Los Cabos Opens to date, and has helped to promote the tournament to a broader audience with numerous media appearances on its behalf. Others who have committed for this year’s 3rd annual event include current no. 54 Ryan Harrison and a singles finalist from last year, Thanasi Kokkinakis. Last year’s champion, Sam Querrey, will also return.

The tournament takes place at the Delmar International School, a bilingual and bicultural education facility serving children K-12. Special facilities were built there for the first tournament in 2016, highlighted by a 3,500 seat stadium, grandstand and auxiliary courts, plus a hospitality center featuring fine food and drink, sponsor tents, and of course gorgeous views of Land’s End.

19th Annual Bisbee’s East Cape Offshore  (July 31 to August 4)

As summer temperatures heat up, the fishing tournament scene migrates to the Los Cabos municipality’s gorgeous East Cape. No less than two separate single-day tournaments (including the East Cape Dorado Shootout) give away new fully-loaded automobiles to winners, but the region’s summer headliner remains the Bisbee’s East Cape Offshore.

The ECO is the first of three Bisbee’s sponsored fishing tournaments that take place in Los Cabos each year. Cash prizes will be awarded to the top three qualifiers in marlin, tuna and dorado categories during the 2018 edition – scheduled for July 31 to August 4 – with the awards celebration taking place afterwards at the Hotel Buena Vista. Base entry for the event is $1500 per team, with additional fees for daily jackpots. Prize money is based on entry fees received, with 60% going to the billfish winners, and 20% each to top tuna and dorado anglers.

Last year, 64 teams vied for over $590,000 in prize money at the East Cape Offshore. A record 11 of the 64 teams shared in those payouts, following an exciting tournament that saw 136 billfish – including 71 blue marlin and 55 striped marlin – caught in only three days.

A Legend Passes but His Legacy Lives On – East Cape Offshore Kicks Off Bisbee’s 2018 Tournament Schedule

It all started back in 1981, when the owner of a fuel dock and tack business on Balboa Island, Newport Harbor, organized the first Black & Blue marlin tournament in Cabo San Lucas.

His name was Bob Bisbee, and at that first tournament six teams competed for the princely sum of about 10,000 dollars.

Fast forward 25 years into the future, to 2006, and the cash payout had grown to a staggering $4,165,960, then and now the largest in sportfishing history. Over the course of two and a half decades, this once small event had grown to become the most famous in the sport, gathering nicknames along the way like “The World’s Richest Fishing Tournament” and “The Super Bowl of Sportfishing.”

Flash forward 12 more years to 2018 and Bisbee’s Black & Blue remains the marquee fishing event in Cabo San Lucas (and beyond), but it’s no longer the only major tournament on the calendar. It’s not even the only major tournament on the calendar for Bisbee’s.

Over the course of its history in the Los Cabos municipality – which not only includes cape cities Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo, but also the less developed East Cape area – Bisbee’s has steadily built its brand, increasing its prestige through bigger payouts and an extended range of tournament offerings. An East Cape Offshore was added in 2000, a Los Cabos Offshore in 2002.

That trio has comprised Bisbee’s Los Cabos fishing triumvirate ever since.

Each has its own place on the calendar, and each has its own unique personality. The Black & Blue remains very much “The Big Daddy,” while the Los Cabos Offshore has become a more fun-filled, charity-focused alternative.

The East Cape Offshore, meanwhile, is known as the most laid-back of the three events, and as a tone setter, since it’s the first event to take place each year. It kicks off, in effect, the yearly calendar.

In 2018, the ECO is scheduled for Jul. 31 to Aug. 4; the LCO follows, Oct. 18 to 21; with  the B&B headlining Oct. 23 to 27.

July 31st is thus the day Bisbee’s returns to Los Cabos, the day all eyes turn to the municipality’s gorgeous East Cape, a 70-mile coastal arc that stretches from the outskirts of San Jose del Cabo to Los Barriles and the Bay of Palms beyond.

The East Cape has long been known for its dirt roads, secluded beaches and off-the-grid communities, but the recent Los Cabos building boom has reached as far as the East Cape’s La Ribera, site of the soon-to-be-open Four Seasons Costa Palmas Resort.

A few miles northwest of La Ribera are Los Barriles and its neighbor Buenavista, the traditional fishing capitals of the East Cape. The two small but picturesque tourist towns host the majority of the region’s tournaments. Hotel Buena Vista Beach Resort in Buenavista, for example, is the long-time headquarters for Bisbee’s East Cape Offshore, and the site of the post-tournament awards ceremony. This heritage is celebrated by the leaping marlin sculpture which greets guests at the resort’s entrance.

Last year, 64 teams vied for over $590,000 in prize money at the East Cape Offshore. A record 11 of the 64 teams shared in those payouts, following an exciting tournament that saw 136 billfish – including 71 blue marlin and 55 striped marlin – caught in only three days. By contrast, only three dorado and 16 tuna were boated during the same time period.

Capt. Andrew Hughes and his Mi Corazon team finished first overall, receiving over $258,000 for their efforts….not a bad return for a few days spent fishing in paradise. Their winning catch was an impressive 437 lb. black marlin, one of only three black marlin caught during the tournament.

Base entry for this year’s ECO remains $1,500 per team, with $17,000 across the board for entry in all daily jackpots. The base entries are pooled and disbursed at the conclusion of the event, with the majority going to billfish winners, and the remainder earmarked for trophy gamefish like tuna and dorado.

Sadly, Bob Bisbee will not be there to watch it. The man who started it all, the godfather of tournament fishing in Los Cabos, passed away peacefully in his Dallas area home last Thursday, June 14th, at the age of 85.

He will be missed. But his legacy continues, his name forever synonymous with trophy-sized catches and boisterous good times.

“Red” Alert! Dates Set for Sammy Hagar Birthday Bashes at Cabo Wabo Cantina

Some things get better with age. Some people do, too.

That’s certainly the case with Sammy Hagar. “The Red Rocker” has been going strong for over 70 years now, and will celebrate year 71 on the planet with a series of birthday bashes at Cabo Wabo Cantina on Oct. 9, 11 and 13.

The “birthday bashes” are a perennial highlight of the autumn event calendar. Hagar has been hosting them at Cabo Wabo since the year benchmark Cabo San Lucas nightspot opened, and over the past few decades there have been guest appearances and cameos from a virtual who’s who of rock n’ roll.

But getting tickets has never been easy. Random drawings for ticket eligibility are par for the course, with luckless “Redheads” camping out in front of Cabo Wabo when select first come, first serve dinner show tickets are released in early October.

Little wonder that the competition is fierce. Hagar is rock n’ roll royalty, after all, and has been a star since he first joined Montrose in 1973. He eventually went solo, charting hits like There’s Only One Way to Rock and I Can’t Drive 55 before cycling through a series of supergroups, from Van Halen to Chickenfoot.

Hagar is also Los Cabos royalty, the celebrity figure most associated with life at Land’s End.

That wasn’t always true, however. Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards was the first rock star to put Cabo San Lucas on the map, garnering publicity for the area when he married supermodel Patti Hansen at Hotel Finisterra in 1983. Bandmate Mick Jagger, even more famous than Richards, was best man.

That property, since rebranded as Sandos Finisterra, has memorialized the legendary nuptials by preserving the palapa beneath which the couple were married, and opening an onsite nightclub and Brit themed lounge called The Stones Club.

Hagar first heard of Los Cabos when he was reading about Richards’ marriage in a music magazine, and he began making plans for his own club soon after his initial visit. He opened Cabo Wabo Cantina with his then Van Halen bandmates in 1990, famously premiering the new Land’s End bar and restaurant with a massive promotional assist from MTV. The Van Halen partnership eventually dissolved – both musically and in Cabo Wabo – even as Hagar steered the venture toward enormous success.

In 1996, Cabo Wabo spun off its own house brand of tequila, likewise known as Cabo Wabo. A scant 11 years later, Hagar was able to sell 80% of his stake in the spirit to the Campari Group, cashing out with a cool $80 million.

The cantina has also proved popular, so much so that additional locations have been opened in Las Vegas, Hollywood and Lake Tahoe. The upshot of this continued success is that Hagar is now as much a business magnate as famous musician, recently adding rum and branded beach bars to his ever growing portfolio.

But Cabo Wabo Cantina is the place that started it all, and it’s where Hagar has celebrated his birthday for 27 of the past 28 years (Hurricane Odile in 2014 resulted in the shows being moved to Las Vegas).

Swinging into Summer – June Parties & Events in Los Cabos

June is an exciting time in Los Cabos, thanks to a slate of seasonal events that range from art and music

focused fiestas to outdoor adventures and prestigious sporting competitions.

The first month of summer, for example, sees the start of peak surf season on the Sea of Cortez side beaches of Los Cabos; most notably at Costa Azul, where Zippers surf break is ground zero for the area’s only World Surf League sponsored professional event: The Los Cabos Open of Surf.

June also ushers in the season for Los Cabos municipality’s yearly roster of cash-rich fishing tournaments, with two high-profile competitions.

Art Walk hours are 5 to 9 p.m, when the neighborhood comes alive with wine, cheese and guided tours, as well as colorful street artists and strolling mariachis.

This season’s Art Walk has been the biggest and best yet; and there is still time to enjoy the event before it goes on hiatus:  four more Thursday evening celebrations are scheduled before the end of June.

For those unable to experience this festival of sights, sounds and flavors before then, don’t worry. Art Walk returns at the beginning of November each year, with all new art and, traditionally, personalized altars as part of Day of the Dead remembrances throughout Mexico.

5th Annual Cabo Summer Slam/Pelagic Triple Crown of Fishing Tournament  (June 7 to 9)

 

Pelagic, a Newport Beach based company, is one of the world’s leaders when it comes to lifestyle apparel and high-performance gear associated with watersports like fishing, boating, diving and surfing. So it’ll come as no surprise that the 5th annual Cabo Summer Slam, slated for June 7 – 9, offers some high stakes prizes and jackpots. Over $200,000 is on the line in 2018, meaning it’s the biggest Cabo San Lucas based tournament until Bisbee’s big money competitions in October.

 

This is a bet big, win big scenario. General entry is $2,500 for tournament teams, or $12,500 to cover base entry plus all daily jackpots. Participating fishermen will be targeting the usual suspects: marlin (blue, black and striped), sailfish, tuna, dorado and wahoo; but prizes are spread across four divisions.

 

Prizes will be given to teams that catch and release the most aggregate billfish points, and to those weighing the heaviest two-fish total of each gamefish species – tuna, wahoo and dorado – during the two-day tournament. As with most local tournaments, however, the biggest money is paid out in jackpots.

 

Los Cabos Open of Surf  (June 11 to 17)

 

There are two World Surf League sponsored surfing events held annually on the Baja California peninsula: one is a Big Wave Tour event off Todos Santos Island near Ensenada; the other is the Los Cabos Open of Surf, hosted each June at Zippers point break off Playa Costa Azul in San José del Cabo.

 

When it premiered in 2013, the Los Cabos Open of Surf was a 6-star men’s event under the ASP (the forerunner to the WSL). Women joined the fun in 2014, and since 2015, the LCOS has been a QS 6000 event solely for women and junior men and women.

 

The 2018 competition is scheduled for June 11 – 17, and like events in previous years, will be a celebration of all aspects of surf culture, from beach parties and culinary fetes to nightly entertainment featuring DJs and live musical performers.

Fiesta de la Música in San José del Cabo  (June 23)

In 1982, the first Fete de la Musique was held in Paris, where it was scheduled to coincide with the summer solstice, the longest day of the year. Flash forward 36 years, and the Fete de la Musique is no longer solely a French celebration, but a worldwide phenomenon that takes place annually in over 450 cities in 12o countries around the globe. For the past 10 years, that list of cities has included San Jose del Cabo, where the celebration is known by its Spanish name, La Fiesta de la Musica.

This summer symphony is free and open to all musicians who’d like to participate, from amateurs to professionals, across all musical genres. The only prerequisite for participants and spectators – for whom admission is also free – is a love for music, a passion that’s so pervasive internationally that music is often referred to as the universal language. The art form’s universality, in fact, provides the context for the event’s local motto: “la fiesta de todos y para todos” (“the party from all and for all).

Over the past decade, the Fiesta de la Musica has become so important and so beloved by the local community that it’s now considered the premier music festival in Los Cabos. Certainly, it’s the most robustly attended, drawing over 25,000 people annually. The 2018 edition is slated for Saturday, June 23 – 6 p.m. to 2 a.m. – with some 100 or more bands and musical acts expected to perform throughout the city’s historic downtown area.

22nd Annual Stars and Stripes Golf and Fishing Tournament  (June 28 to July 1)

The 22nd edition of what amounts to the complete Cabo lifestyle experience – fishing, golf, music, food and drinks, beach days, and more – is scheduled to return June 28.

The fishing tournament has proved to be most enduringly popular part of Stars & Stripes. It launches from beautiful Chileno Bay, with participating anglers vying to bag the biggest tuna, dorado, wahoo, sailfish, and blue, black and striped marlin. For 2018, start times have been pushed back to allow a more vacation-like approach.

But golf, too, is a major draw. Participants this year have the choice of nine or 18-hole tournament outings at Puerto Los Cabos, which currently boasts 27 spectacular holes from champion golfers Jack “The Golden Bear” Nicklaus and Greg “The Great White Shark” Norman. Nine of the holes at Puerto Los Cabos are brand new, so tournament entrants will be among the first to play them.

Nightly musical entertainment is also a distinguishing feature of Stars & Stripes. In past years, rock stars like Sammy Hagar, The Doobie Brothers, Three Dog Night, and Kenny Loggins have played their biggest hits. This year the headliner is Don Felder, former lead guitarist for the Eagles, and a co-writer of the iconic song Hotel California. Plenty of other acts are also on tap, including The Downtown Band, and the festivities will once again be hosted by Shawn Parr, AKA “The Ambassador of Country Music”.
