Los Cabos Fishing Report – October 21, 2018

October 21, 2018

As we progress further into the fall season we are seeing many more anglers arriving and local weather patterns that are rapidly changing. We felt cooler 65 degree low temperatures early in the morning, shifting currents and ocean temperatures cooling off to the low 80s degree range. Daytime highs still are in the mid to upper 80s. We have been watching a series of tropical low pressure areas off of Southern mainland Mexico, very late in the season now for these systems to develop in tropical storms, but you never know these days with global climate changes. We are hoping no storms head our way during this busy time.

Heavy pressure has cleaned out the sardinas which had been schooling around the Puerto Los Cabos Marina jetties for several months now, new sources now off of Chileno and surely they will be scouting our areas further north. Squid supplies have maintained, but are likely to become scarce in coming weeks as well. Other options will include ballyhoo, caballito and chihuil

Last Sunday we felt strong south winds, since then the wind has been coming mainly from the north, already fairly strong for this early in the season, hopefully this will calm down, has contributed to the cooling water trend. Sportfishing fleets are fishing in all different directions, since there is no particular hot spot, action has been spread out, variety of fish are in the area, but no large concentrations of any particular species. The yellowfin tuna action slowed down this week, the Iman Bank was still the spot producing the better grade of tuna, yellowfin tuna ranging up to 100 b. were landed, though these fish were few and far between, fortunate to land one, some anglers were getting lucky and landing up to three of the tuna. Off of Cabo San Lucas there was a bite for smaller tuna off of Santa Maria, as well as offshore yellowfin associated with porpoise.

The cooling current seemed to make the wahoo a bit more active, as many more of these fish are being reported, a small percentage landed, quite a few others being lost, not many anglers had been specifically targeting these fish yet, because they just not had been biting much. This will all change soon, with water temperatures now in the ideal range, slow trolling trap hooked live chihuil is always one of the more productive techniques, of course chihuil at times are not a guarantee to come by. Wahoo also hit on Rapalas, Yo-Zuri, skirted lead heads and a few on yo-yo jigs.

Still only a few dorado being seen, but more this week than we have seen for a while now, still no large specimens, but at least we are seeing some of these popular gamefish show up.

Bottom action was limited by strong currents and north winds, some red snapper, barred pargo, cabrilla, bonito and an occasional amberjack or dogtooth snapper.

Billfish action was reported a bit more consistent off the grounds near Cabo San Lucas, though local grounds off of San Jose did produce scattered action for sailfish, black, blue and striped marlin.

The combined panga fleets launching out of La Playita, Puerto Los Cabos Marina sent out approximately 142 charters for the week. Anglers reported a fish count of:  1 black marlin, 4 striped marlin,12 sailfish, 1 blue marlin, 27 dorado, 19 wahoo, 88 yellowfin tuna, 110 bonito, 35 white skipjack, 32 red snapper, 6 amberjack, 18 barred pargo, 1 dogtooth snapper, 14 yellow snapper, 24 cabrilla, 8 sierra, 4 roosterfish and 90 triggerfish.

Good fishing, Eric

Thursday Night Art Walks Celebrate the Beauty, History and Culture of San Jose del Cabo

On the surface level, the weekly Art Walks in San Jose del Cabo are a celebration of the town’s talented artists and its dozens of colorful art galleries.

But on a deeper level the Art Walks – held each Thursday from 5 to 9 p.m., November through June – are a celebration of San Jose del Cabo itself. The event is, in a very real sense, a small-scale canvas upon which an entire community and its rich culture and history are presented to the world.

Many people think Los Cabos was born with the beginning of the tourist age, and this is at least partly true. The name Los Cabos wasn’t created until 1981, when it was given to the peninsula’s newly designated and southernmost municipality. The town of San Jose del Cabo, however, is much, much older. In fact, it’s one of the oldest continually occupied communities in the Californias.

It was at San Jose del Cabo that the first Jesuit mission in Los Cabos was built in 1730. San Jose was chosen as a site in large part because of its abundant freshwater resources, which had also been luring treasure-laden galleons since colonial Spain inaugurated the lucrative Manila–Acapulco trade route in 1565.

San Jose del Cabo was a hotbed of resistance during the Mexican–American War, site of both a pitched battle and a prolonged siege against the invaders. The region’s wartime political leader was a native son of San Jose del Cabo named Mauricio Castro Cota, and a young officer named Jose Antonio Mijares passed into local legend after he died leading a charge against U.S. forces on Nov. 20, 1847. The spot on which he fell has been the site of a public monument ever since.

Certainly, the architectural monuments of the downtown area are among the most beautiful in all of Baja California Sur. A depiction of the death of the first local Jesuit missionary – Nicolas Tamaral, who was killed by indigenous inhabitants after an ill-fated ban on polygamy – is set above the main doors of the beautiful old Catholic church (Parroquia San Jose), one of many important historical sites located near the main square of Plaza Mijares. City Hall, with its distinctive clock tower, was completed in 1930, and today houses wonderful murals depicting the history of the area, and of the country at large.

The first hotel in Los Cabos, Fisher House, opened in 1951, about a block from the old church. The small property, owned by Carmen Fisher, predated the now legendary Hotel Palmilla by a full six years. These and other monuments are living reminders of San Jose’s long and storied history…but the downtown area has also recently received a thoroughly modern facelift, so that old and new co-exist side-by-side.

The weekly Art Walks welcome visitors into the heart of this special place for romantic perambulations, not only through the officially designated Distrito del Arte – with its charming cobblestone streets – but throughout the historic downtown area at large.

Artists and art lovers open their galleries to showcase their latest offerings, downtown monuments like City Hall and Parroquia San Jose are outlined by colorful lights, arts and crafts makers spread out their wares on tables or along the sidewalks, wandering musicians serenade passersby sipping wine, or those taking a breather at local bars and restaurants.

There are plenty of both, by the way. San Jose del Cabo is home to the original Baja Brewing Company and dozens of superb restaurants, from Mexican traditionalists like Jazmin’s and La Lupita to internationally representative eateries like La Dolce.

This season’s Art Walk has been the biggest and best yet; and there is still time to enjoy the event before it goes on hiatus:  eight more Thursday evening celebrations are scheduled before the end of June.

For those unable to experience this festival of sights, sounds and flavors before then, don’t worry. Art Walk returns at the beginning of November each year, with all new art and, traditionally, personalized altars as part of Day of the Dead remembrances throughout Mexico.

Romance Unlimited: A Guide to Valentine’s Day Dinners in Los Cabos

Like New Year’s Eve, Valentine’s Day in Los Cabos requires a little prior planning…at least for those who’d like to dine at one of the area’s most famously romantic restaurants, where first-class food and wine are complemented by spectacular views and a host of amor focused amenities.

El Farallon

It’s hard to imagine a more dramatic entrance than that offered by The Resort at Pedregal, widely acclaimed as the finest resort in Cabo San Lucas since its opening in 2009. Guests enter through the longest private tunnel in Mexico – chandelier lit, of course – before emerging to gorgeous views of the Pacific Ocean from the outdoor lobby. The views are outstanding from every corner of the property, but reach their zenith at El Farallon, a restaurant set cliffside above crashing Pacific waves. Here, couples may start with pre-prandial sippers on the Champagne Terrace before being seated for dinner, and progressing through a parade of fresh and delicious local seafood.

Sunset da Mona Lisa

Perched virtually atop the Sea of Cortez at Sunset Point, Mona Lisa’s tables look across the famed Monuments surf break to the evocatively shaped granite monuments at Land’s End, the terminus of the nearly 800-mile Baja California peninsula. Every evening, those with the forethought to acquire a reservation for the sunset seating are treated to elegant Italian style cuisine, as well as explosive and unforgettable burst of color as the sun sinks beyond Cabo’s fabled Arch and the distant Pacific Ocean horizon. Even more forethought than usual will be required for Valentine’s Day reservations, when the restaurant traditionally rolls out a special four or five course menu.

Pitahayas

Imagine being seated beneath an enormous palapa, looking out beyond palm trees wrapped in colorful lights and ornaments to see moonlight glittering on the surface of the Sea of Cortez. That’s the gorgeous setting at Pitahayas – a fine dining fixture at Sheraton Grand’s luxe Hacienda del Mar – where Chef Volker Romeike has created one of the most diverse local fusion cuisines, a Pacific Rim medley that blends disparate influences from México and Hawaii to Japan, China, Korea, Thailand, and the Philippines. Private dinners may also be arranged in Cava de Santiago, one of the region’s most abundantly stocked wine cellars.

Caborey

There’s something about being on a boat that ups the romance factor almost exponentially. Caborey certainly proves that point with its signature dinner cruises, following chateaubriand and lobster with a Las Vegas style floorshow featuring Latin American singing and dancing. Tango anyone? The 144’ luxury catamaran sails nightly from the main dock on the Cabo San Lucas Marina, treating guests to live music on the top deck, as well as up-close views of Land’s End monuments like Pelican Rock, The Window to the Pacific, and of course El Arco.

Additional Options

Looking for something a little more creative? Plan a picnic at Playa del Amor, AKA Lover’s Beach. You’ll need to make arrangements with a caterer, and of course a water taxi driver for transportation to and from this gorgeous stretch of golden sand, which offers spectacular views across the bay, taking in a wide swath of coast from Cabo San Lucas to Punta Ballena.

Whichever romantic dinner option you choose, you’ll naturally want to return afterwards to your luxury villa rental with infinity pool views of seemingly infinite ocean. After all, there’s romance, and then there’s Romance, Los Cabos Style.

New Year, Familiar Cheer: A Guide to January Events in Los Cabos

The year may be brand new, but visitors to Los Cabos this month will find many of the upcoming regional events seem comfortingly familiar.

Two of the premier annual sporting events return this January, including the signature local golf tournament (the Los Cabos Pro-Am at Cabo del Sol), and what is now the area’s most anticipated windsports competition (the La Ventana Classic).

Top cultural festivals and gatherings this month, too, have well-established roots: the yearly music concert series in Todos Santos dates back, in one form or another, to 2012, making it two years older than the town’s Writer’s Workshop; and the Thursday night Art Walk in San Jose del Cabo is, of course, a staple of the winter (and spring) event calendar.

All are back, and expected to be better than ever in 2018.

Art Walk in San Jose del Cabo (Jan. 4, 11, 18, 25)

The historic Distrito del Arte in San Jose del Cabo takes center stage each Thursday evening during high tourist season – November through June – when residents and visitors alike are invited to stroll its cobblestone streets and peruse the many eclectic fine arts galleries. Art Walk hours are 5 to 9 p.m, when the neighborhood comes alive with wine, cheese and guided tours, as well as colorful street artists and strolling mariachis. A chance to check out San Jose’s recent downtown makeover is another reason to make the Thursday night pilgrimage.

Tropic of Cancer Concert Series in Todos Santos (Jan. 11 – 21)

Former R.E.M. guitarist Peter Buck pioneered jam culture in Todos Santos with this annual music festival, which brought in high-profile musicians for performances at the landmark Hotel California, as well as the town’s picturesque main plaza. Buck’s festival went on hiatus after he made some controversial comments about local politics at the 2016 event, but the music lives on. The freshly minted Tropic of Cancer Concert Series premiered in 2017, and returns in 2018 with an all-star lineup headlined by Joan Osborne, The Autumn Defense, The Jag, Cordovas, La Santa Cecilia, Bostich and Fussible from Nortec Collective, Julie Roberts, and La Victoria.

Los Cabos Pro-Am Golf Tournament (Jan. 15 – 19)

The most notable golf tournament in a region famed for its spectacular courses returns this January, as Cabo del Sol’s Ocean and Desert Courses play host to the 10th annual Los Cabos Pro-Am. Stay and play packages for the tournament include five days and four nights of accommodation at the Sheraton Grand Hacienda del Mar Golf & Spa Resort, as well as three rounds at the participating courses, plus an invitation to the opening and closing cocktail parties, and daily breakfast at one of Hacienda del Mar’s excellent onsite restaurants. Overall team prizes are another lure for amateurs.

La Ventana Classic (Jan. 17 – 21)

Baja California Sur boasts world-class conditions for many water-based activities: fishing, of course, but also surfing, sailing, diving, kayaking and, seasonally at least, windsports. Each winter, when strong El Norte winds blow down the Sea of Cortez, picturesque East Cape communities like Los Barriles and La Ventana become meccas for windsurfing and kiteboarding enthusiasts. Now that Los Barriles has ended its annual Lord of the Wind Showdown, La Ventana’s “Classic” has become the premier regional competition, with windsurfers, kiteboarders and SUP (stand up paddleboarding) enthusiasts battling the breezes to earn cash and glory in various categories. Proceeds this year are earmarked to benefit local schools.

Todos Santos Writers Workshop (Jan. 27 – Feb. 3)

Best known for its painters, the pueblo magico of Todos Santos is also known as a congenial community for writers…as evidenced by the 5th annual writers’ workshop, which returns to the atmospheric Casa Dracula on January 27th. In addition to its usual collection of seminars and speakers, publishing roundtables and other literary pursuits, the 2018 event marks the premiere of the first-ever poetry workshop. The instructor for this newly minted feature is award-winning poet, translator and journalist Christopher Merrill, who also serves as the director of the International Writing Program at the University of Iowa.

A Taste of Cabo: Dates Set for Sabor a Cabo International Food & Wine Festival

Los Cabos’ robust schedule of annual events offers something to suit every taste, from sporting competitions showcasing fishing, golf and off-road racing to cultural fiestas celebrating art, film and music. For food and wine lovers, however, the most highly anticipated yearly event is Sabor a Cabo, a staple festival of the holiday season whose name translates to “Taste” or “Flavor” of Cabo.

Dates have recently been announced for the 2017 extravaganza, which will feature over 50 participating restaurants and 25 regional wineries, and is expected to draw over 3,000 guests from around the world.

The rural food and wine tasting will take place Sunday, Dec. 3 at Huerta Los Tamarindos, an organic farm and restaurant just outside San Jose del Cabo. The main event, meanwhile, is scheduled for Saturday, Dec. 9, and will be held at the Quivira Clubhouse at Quivira Los Cabos, an upscale resort and residential development on the Pacific Coast of Cabo San Lucas that is best known for its superb Jack Nicklaus designed golf course.

Although dozens of Los Cabos restaurants participate, Sabor a Cabo is an international festival in scope, with world-class cooking talent expected to attend. The three culinary headliners for the main event this year, for example, are celebrated chefs Dieter Koschina, Enrique Olvera and Richard Sandoval.

Koschina is originally from Austria, but became a household name in Portugal, where his Vila Joya (House of Joy) was awarded two coveted Michelin stars, and in 2012 became the country’s first restaurant to crack The World’s 50 Best Restaurants list. It’s currently ranked 98th best worldwide.

Olvera made his reputation with Pujol in Mexico City, currently ranked 20th in the world. That in itself would be an amazing achievement, but his New York based restaurant Cosme is 40th on the same list. Olvera made big news locally in 2015 when he opened a seafood-focused Pacific fusion restaurant, Manta, at The Cape: A Thompson Hotel in Los Cabos.

Sandoval, another Mexico City born chef (and television personality), has now opened over 40 restaurants around the world, from the U.S. and México to Serbia and Qatar. Among his many projects are two acclaimed restaurants in Los Cabos:  hip tourist corridor based eatery, Toro Latin Kitchen & Bar; and La Biblioteca de Tequila, a tequila and comfort food mecca at Breathless Cabo San Lucas Resort & Spa.

Incredible food and wine from world-class chefs may be the primary draw, but Sabor a Cabo also has a reputation for featuring world-class music. Past performers have included Grammy Award winning singer-songwriter Lila Downs, and Mexican rock group Mana – the best-selling Latin American band of all-time, with over 40 million albums sold.

No word yet on who will perform this year, but the organizers have dropped a hint that the musical headliner will be a famous international group most associated with the 1980s.

All ticket proceeds go to benefit local charities.

Los Cabos Fishing Report – October 18, 2015

October 18, 2015 127_ChristineGilmore

Fall Season seemed to arrive overnight, we are in the midst of the traditional busiest angling season. Tournaments are now underway and the largest event of all, the Bisbee’s Black and Blue is slated for next week, this is the event where teams compete for possible multimillion dollar payouts. Weather conditions have been stable since past weekend, still quite tropical for this late in the season, mornings are refreshing, though mid-day the heat index is high. Remember to bring your sunscreen, hats and sunglasses. Ocean water temperature is ranging from 85 to 88 degrees, swells have been moderate, winds very light and all around conditions very favorable, with clean water found within a mile or two or shore.

Despite such great conditions, the fishing action was more sporadic, not as consistent as we would expect for this time of year, this powerful el Nino current has all normal patterns mixed up. Bait has been scattered as well, no significant resource for sardinas now, limited supplies, caballito and slabs of giant squid have been most common options.

For much of the past week local fleets found the best action to be within one mile of shore off of Punta Gorda. This area was attracting both panga and cruiser fleets, this is where everyone congregated. Main species being encountered was yellowfin tuna, most of these tuna were in the 15 to 35 lb. class. Striking on striped squid or sardinas, when available. The yellowfin would come up to feed in flurries, often early in the morning, then slowing down, maybe with a couple of other feeding frenzies later in the morning. The key was to be at the right place when they did go on the bite. Average catch ranged from one tuna, to four or five. Not everybody was catching the tuna every day, even top skippers had tough days. Though these were decent quality of yellowfin, considering they were found so close to shore. Heavy pressure, limited bait, etc..made this bite become tougher latter in the week and now boats were again searching out more distance grounds.

Very few dorado being found, to see a half dozen for the fleet for one day was average. No particular area to find these dorado now, best chance seemed to be on the same grounds as where the tuna action was. Only an occasional wahoo being landed, other lost strikes, but these fish have not been very active at all, most likely when we see water temperatures eventually drop closer to 80 degrees, these fish will wake up.

Bottom action consisted mainly for monster sized triggerfish and some rare pompano, these fish were striking just as were the tuna, while drift fishing close to shore off of Punta Gorda. We had not seen any of these African pompano recently, they used to bite more often in late spring, very scrappy fighters and excellent eaters. A handful of barred pargo, yellow snapper and cabrilla rounded out the structure action.

We heard of more billfish action on the Pacific, though no confirmed reports of wide open action. On local grounds off of San Jose del Cabo, there were sailfish and some striped marlin, a couple smaller sized blue marlin. No inshore action to speak of now, though a local shore fishermen landed a world class 44 lb. snook off of the La Playita, el Faro stretch.

The combined panga fleets launching out of La Playita, Puerto Los Cabos Marina sent out approximately 175 charters for the week, with anglers reporting a fish count of: 7 striped marlin, 3 blue marlin, 16 sailfish, 345 yellowfin tuna, 29 dorado, 5 wahoo, 23 white skipjack, 18 bonito, 2 dogtooth snapper, 26 yellow snapper, 220 triggerfish, 18 African pompano, 10 cabrilla and 24 barred pargo.

Good fishing, Eric

Mexico is One of the Safest Vacation Destinations

Baja, California – Mexico, one of the world’s great travel destinations, is often singled out for violent crime without telling the whole story. While there is Arch Shotsporadic violence along parts of the U.S. border, the majority of Mexico’s key tourism areas are not only safe, but safer than many other popular tourism areas.
While the media often portrays Mexico as the most dangerous place on earth, it is statistically quite safe. According to NationMaster.com which uses U.N.-based data, Mexico doesn’t even make the list of the 36 nations with the highest murder rates. Mild-mannered nations like Sweden and Switzerland top Mexico for murders on NationMaster.com. The assault rate in the U.S. is nearly 5 times greater than that of Mexico in the independent Prominix report adjusted for under-reported crime.
Even when we add on independent estimates for unreported homicides, Mexico ranks 21st behind many popular vacation destinations. Places we think of as idyllic Caribbean retreats have double, triple, even quadruple the murder rates of Mexico. Mexico’s famous vacation areas are even safer than the averaged statistics, and even safer still for tourists.
The Yucatan is as safe as rural U.S. states.
The magnificent beaches and ancient ruins of the Mexican State of Yucatan are among the safest and most spectacular resort beaches in the world. Yucatan’s low homicide rate is slightly lower than the rural U.S. States of Wyoming, Montana, Oregon and Maine.
Mexico is safer than many cities in the U.S.
More than 150,000 Americans safely visit Mexico every day. And while the media sensationalizes stories of violence in Mexico, Mexico is safer than many major U.S. cities. Travelers feel relatively safe visiting popular U.S. cities like Miami, Philadelphia, Chicago, New Orleans, Washington D.C, or Atlanta. Visitors from around the world enjoy these vibrant cities in relative, reasonable safety. Yet each of these cities is statistically less safe than Mexico.
Mexico and politically charged Media Bias
In the debate on immigration reform in the US, the facts on safety in Mexico have become a casualty of politics. To change public opinion and policy, politicians sometimes throw fuel on the fire. If you make up an exciting story about “severed heads in the desert”, it gets a lot of attention and people believe it. The governor of Arizona admitted this story was baseless, but only after months of damage was successfully inflicted to the image of Mexico. The homicide rates above are facts from the FBI, not political fabrications.
Media Favoritism versus Facts
New Orleans is beloved and its renaissance is showcased in the news. The FBI reports the murder rate of New Orleans is declining, but it is nearly 4 times higher than all of Mexico and over 5 times higher than Mexico City. New Orleans is still an amazing place to visit and the Media is right to champion this inspirational city. But Mexico is at least as remarkable and there is a clear difference in how each of these storied destinations is portrayed in contemporary news.
Every city and country has places that are safe and dangerous. Mexico is no exception. The areas that are dangerous should be avoided. And those that are safe should be enjoyed and celebrated.
Understanding the size and scope of Mexico
Mexico is huge, ranking 14th in the world, and spanning over 2,000 miles from end to end. Mexico is a nation of 31 states as diverse as those in the U.S. and is larger than the states from Texas to Maine. Canceling a vacation to Mexico because of isolated border violence would be like canceling a vacation to Orlando because of the Boston Bombings. People didn’t cancel trips to Dallas or New Orleans in the aftermath of mass shootings in Arizona, Colorado or Connecticut, because they simply aren’t related. Yet Dallas and New Orleans are closer to border violence than many of Mexico’s peaceful tourist areas.
Mexico City is 4 times safer than Washington D.C.
The U.S. State Department in Washington issues warnings about Mexico, yet Washington D.C. is four times more deadly than Mexico City. Washington’s murder rate has been cut almost in half in the last 10 years, but it still averages 24 per 100,000 vs. only 8-9 per 100,000 in Mexico City. How do you suppose the U.S. State department would feel if the Mexican government posted travel warnings for the U.S. capital? Mexico City is a cultural treasure that is larger than New York, London or Paris. In fact, it is about the same size as London and Paris combined.
“Mexico’s violence not as widespread as it seems.”
After months of sensationalized stories about Mexico’s border violence, USA Today published a story about the media hype. While the story itself became an opportunity to re-tell some sensational tales, it did set the record straight by finally comparing U.S. and Mexican homocide figures.
Mexico has very low violent crime rates.
The U.S. Assault rate is 5 times higher than Mexico’s. Mexico’s violent crime rates for Assault, Kidnapping and Rape are substantially lower than Canada’s and yet the U.S. State Department issues no such warnings for Canada. The rate for Rape in the U.S. is more than double the rate in Mexico. The numbers in the charts below have been adjusted for unreported crime from the respected 2012 Prominix report and are the most accurate statistics available on this subject.
Unless you are involved in the drug trade, you are statistically safer in Mexico than anywhere else in North America. Even though the U.S. murder rate of 4 per 100,000 is lower than Mexico’s, tourists and visitors are statistically safer in Mexico and much less likely to be a victim of violent crime than in the U.S., Canada and many other countries regarded as safe.
