The Fiesta de la Musica Celebrates its 10th Anniversary in June with Performances from Over 100 Bands

In 1981 a French director of music and culture, inspired by a statistic that claimed half the country’s children played a musical instrument, began dreaming of a way to engage this musical spirit en masse. Soon after, in 1982, the first Fete de la Musique was held in Paris, where it was scheduled to coincide with the summer solstice, the longest day of the year.

Flash forward 36 years, and the Fete de la Musique is no longer solely a French celebration, but a worldwide phenomenon that takes place annually in over 450 cities in 12o countries around the globe. For the past 10 years, that list of cities has included San Jose del Cabo, the oldest and most populous of the two cape cities (Cabo San Lucas is the other) that comprise the modern-day municipality of Los Cabos. In San Jose, however, the celebration is known by its Spanish name, La Fiesta de la Musica.

This summer symphony is free and open to all musicians who’d like to participate, from amateurs to professionals, across all musical genres. The only prerequisite for participants and spectators – for whom admission is also free – is a love for music, a passion that’s so pervasive internationally that music is often referred to as the universal language. The art form’s universality, in fact, provides the context for the event’s local motto: “la fiesta de todos y para todos” (“the party from all and for all).

Over the past decade, the Fiesta de la Musica has become so important and so beloved by the local community that it’s now considered the premier music festival in Los Cabos. Certainly, it’s the most robustly attended, drawing over 25,000 people annually. The 2018 edition is slated for Saturday, June 23 – 6 p.m. to 2 a.m. – with some 100 or more bands and musical acts expected to perform throughout the city’s historic downtown area.

For those who won’t be in the area for the Fiesta de la Musica in June, Los Cabos and its surrounding environs offer plenty of other opportunities to hear great music from acclaimed performers. San Jose del Cabo is also famed for its Jazz Festival, which draws huge crowds to the Plaza del Pescador each February; and its Patron Saint festival every March features five days of live music, as well as a parade and regional food and drink.

Cape sister Cabo San Lucas hosts its own kind of musical celebration in October, when rock star Sammy Hagar throws a series of birthday bashes at Cabo Wabo Cantina, the nightclub he founded with his former Van Halen bandmates back in 1990. The Land’s End city’s biggest food festival, Sabor a Cabo, also brings in big-name headliners each December, from Mexican rock gods Mana to funk-soul legends like Earth Wind & Fire.

Todos Santos, a one-hour drive north of Cabo San Lucas, boasts its own rock star pedigree. The town’s Tropic of Cancer Concert Series, which draws alt-rock bands from across the U.S. and Mexico each January, grew out of the Todos Santos Music Festival that was originally founded by former R.E.M. guitarist Peter Buck.

Los Cabos Fishing Report February 23, 2018

This past week we saw a slight increase in the amount of anglers arriving. As we have become accustomed, the month of February continues to produce a wide range of unpredictable weather patterns. We felt a cold wave sweep in, starting with a couple of days we felt scattered rain, mostly sprinkles, some areas reported a bit heavier precipitation, much cloud cover and daytime highs reaching only into the low 70s. More wind from the north, though it was on and off and not so strong that charter boats had to abort plans. Despite the cooler conditions, the ocean has remained relatively warm, now averaging 70 to 74 degrees, very clean and blue close to shore, strong current running though. Lots of jelly fish in the area now, as there was continued large presence of whales and of course those pesky sea lions, which have been robbing their share of the catch.

Sardinas continue to be the main bait being used, found schooling off of the beaches from Palmilla to Cabo Real, as well as they are now being once again found off of the rocky beach stretches north near San Luis, these being a larger grade of these baitfish. Other options have been slabs of squid as well as on some days varying quantities of mackerel were being jigging up on sabiki rigs, mainly off of Punta Gorda.

The highlight this week was that the yellowfin tuna which had really faded out last week, rebounded this week as water conditions actually improved despite the cooler weather patterns. Fleets found decent action near Vinorama for yellowfin that were ranging in sizes to over 50 lb., quality tuna considering that this is never known as a favorable time frame for this pelagic species. The fish were striking on sardinas, strips of squid, as well as on mackerel, when they were able to be found. Boats were averaging from one or two to five or six fish per morning. Another common fish being found were dorado, most of these were under ten pounds, but we did see some larger fish, included a true 25 lb. bull dorado, which we had not seen for some time. Many people are releasing the small sized dorado, especially the females, remember to practice this conservation of these juvenile fish to help maintain future stocks.

Not much in the way of billfish action now off of San Jose del Cabo, better chances on the Pacific now, we heard of a blue marlin being landed, though most common is the striped marlin this time of year. Bottom action was limited, not much besides a scattering of cabrilla (leopard grouper), pargo and triggerfish, though swift currents made this tough and most charters were going after the tuna and dorado, or fishing for sierra along the beaches.

As long as ocean water conditions remain favorable we do expect that these yellowfin tuna will stay in the area. Hard to predict, but typically in the next few weeks we start to see weather patterns with warming days and less persistent winds. It has been a bonus that supplies of sardinas have held up and seem to be sustainable for the time being.

The combined panga fleets launching out of La Playita, Puerto Los Cabos Marina sent out approximately 59 charters for this shortened week due to weekend travels. Anglers reported a fish count of: 112 yellowfin tuna, 135 dorado, 2 amberjack, 8 yellow snapper, 4 island jack, 8 barred pargo, 11 cabrilla (leopard grouper), 14 huachinango (red snapper), 94 sierra and 18 triggerfish.

Los Cabos Fishing Report – February 4, 2018

We have started the new month of February, which locally is always known to be full of unpredictable weather patterns and sure enough we had a crazy start to this week. We felt strong north winds out of the north for most of the week, cooler green water pushing in from Los Frailes towards the Gordo Banks, ocean currents were down in the 70 to 71 degree range, then winds resided and we felt calmer conditions. Low morning temperatures were up to 68 degrees and the water temperature warmed back up into the 74 degree range, as well as clearing back up to a nice blue color within a couple mile of shore. On the Pacific the water was up to 75 degrees. So conditions were changing daily, daytime high temperatures reach up to 85 degrees on some days. On Thursday we actually had a surprising amount of rainfall on Thursday, as moisture sweeping in the from the southwest brought much needed relief to the dry landscape.

Light crowds of visiting anglers were finding decent supplies of sardinas, which are now being netted off the beach stretches from Cabo Real to Chileno. There were other bait options including mackerel, sardineta, caballito and strips of squid. Fleets were fishing areas from the Pacific Banks, Santa Maria, Gordo Banks and north towards Iman. Most common catches were for dorado, which were found close to shore, as well on the offshore grounds, striking more often on baitfish, but also on trolled artificials. Average size fish was under 10 pounds, though on the Pacific there were reports of a larger grade of dorado up to 20 lb. Getting late in the season now, though the warmer water has kept these gamefish hanging around in local waters.

Wahoo were scarce, only a few fish reported off the East Cape areas, a few more reports of these fish being found on the Banks off of the Pacific, where the warmest currents are now holding, very late in the season for these fish as well.

More billfish activity straight out of Cabo San Lucas and towards the Pacific, though a bit slower during this full moon period, only a scattering of the striped marlin are now being encountered off of San Jose del Cabo, should start to swift this direction in the coming months.

Yellowfin tuna were being found through the region, from on the Pacific Banks to the Gordo Banks, no big numbers at all, though the yellowfin were a nice grade, most of them ranging from 40 lb. to 130 lb. The largest tuna seem to be coming off of the Inner or Outer Gordo Banks. Drift fishing with various baits was the main technique, finicky fish, often they could be seen in numbers breezing on the surface, but would be difficult to entice into striking the hooked baits, also continued heavier boat pressure on the Gordo Banks, since within that range this was one of the more productive areas now providing opportunities at quality fish.

Inshore had not produced much more that a scattering of small roosterfish, a few sierra, with more numbers reportedly on the Pacific. The bottom action was spotty, strong current much of the week, most common catches were smaller sized pargo, a few cabrilla and amberjack, as well as the ever present triggerfish.

Romance Unlimited: A Guide to Valentine’s Day Dinners in Los Cabos

Like New Year’s Eve, Valentine’s Day in Los Cabos requires a little prior planning…at least for those who’d like to dine at one of the area’s most famously romantic restaurants, where first-class food and wine are complemented by spectacular views and a host of amor focused amenities.

It’s hard to imagine a more dramatic entrance than that offered by The Resort at Pedregal, widely acclaimed as the finest resort in Cabo San Lucas since its opening in 2009. Guests enter through the longest private tunnel in Mexico – chandelier lit, of course – before emerging to gorgeous views of the Pacific Ocean from the outdoor lobby. The views are outstanding from every corner of the property, but reach their zenith at El Farallon, a restaurant set cliffside above crashing Pacific waves. Here, couples may start with pre-prandial sippers on the Champagne Terrace before being seated for dinner, and progressing through a parade of fresh and delicious local seafood.

Perched virtually atop the Sea of Cortez at Sunset Point, Mona Lisa’s tables look across the famed Monuments surf break to the evocatively shaped granite monuments at Land’s End, the terminus of the nearly 800-mile Baja California peninsula. Every evening, those with the forethought to acquire a reservation for the sunset seating are treated to elegant Italian style cuisine, as well as explosive and unforgettable burst of color as the sun sinks beyond Cabo’s fabled Arch and the distant Pacific Ocean horizon. New Year Heralds Return of Annual Cultural Festivals in Todos Santos

The lion’s share of the notable annual events in Todos Santos – a charming pueblo magico about 45-miles north of Cabo San Lucas – occur during the first three months of each New Year, when in rapid succession the Pacific Coast community hosts highly-anticipated cultural festivals celebrating music, literature, art and film.

Here’s a look at what’s on tap in 2018 for these signature regional events.

Tropic of Cancer Concert Series – January 11 – 21, 2018

Former R.E.M. guitarist Peter Buck pioneered jam culture in Todos Santos with this annual music festival, which brought in high-profile musicians for performances at the landmark Hotel California, as well as the town’s picturesque main plaza. Buck’s festival went on hiatus after he made some controversial comments about local politics at the 2016 event, but the music lives on. The freshly minted Tropic of Cancer Concert Series premiered in 2017, and returns again in 2018 with an all-star lineup headlined by Joan Osborne, The Autumn Defense, The Jag, Cordovas, La Santa Cecilia, Bostich and Fussible from Nortec Collective, Julie Roberts, and La Victoria.

Todos Santos Writers’ Workshop – Jan. 27 – Feb. 3, 2018

Best known for its painters, Todos Santos has also been a congenial community for writers. The 5th annual writers’ workshop returns to the atmospheric Casa Dracula, and in addition to its usual seminars and speakers, publishing roundtables and other literary pursuits, will for the first time in 2018 feature a poetry workshop. The instructor for the first-ever poetry workshop is award-winning poet, translator and journalist Christopher Merrill, who also serves as the director of the International Writing Program at the University of Iowa.

Todos Santos Art Festival/Open Studios Tour – Feb 10 – 11, 2018

Ever since painter Charles Stewart and his wife Mary Lou moved to Todos Santos in 1985, the town has been famed for its thriving artists’ colony. The best introduction to the region’s abundance of talented artists is the yearly Open Studios Tour, the 9th edition of which is scheduled for Feb. 10 – 11, 2018. Approximately 40 local artists will participate this year, including painters, sculptors, photographers, muralists, plein air painters, encaustic artists, jewelers, printmakers, collage artists, potters, and wood turners. The Palapa Learning Center will offer a special stop on the tour, and will showcase a sampling of 20 selected tour artists’ work for sale. Additionally, the Palapa Society’s child artists will also be working in their “studio” with work on display.

Todos Santos Film Festival – March 7 – 11, 2018

This annual showcase for Mexican and Latin American films was founded in 1994, and is based each year at the historic Teatro-Cine Manuel Marquez de Leon, a landmark 70+ year old movie theater that overlooks the town square in Todos Santos. The 15th edition of the coastal pueblo magico‘s acclaimed festival de cine is set for March 7 – 11, 2018, and will include full-length films, as well as shorts, documentaries, and projects from the local Youth in Video program. Additional screenings will take place in nearby Pescadero, and Baja California Sur’s capital city, La Paz.

The Big Show: A Guide to Whale Watching Season in Los Cabos

High season in Los Cabos traditionally runs from October through May, but travel rates achieve peak intensity during the winter months – December to March – when thousands upon thousands of tourists flock from the frigid temperatures in the U.S. and Canada to soak up the perpetual sunshine on beaches in cape cities Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo.

But snowbirds aren’t the only ones who think heading south to Cabo for the winter is a good idea.

During the same time period, many of the world’s largest creatures travel across immense distances (longer than the longest non-stop plane flight on earth), making their way from arctic feeding grounds to warm water breeding grounds in the coves and lagoons of Baja California Sur.

“They,” of course, are whales, and their winter migration is the reason whale watching season and high tourist season in Los Cabos are virtually synonymous.

Grays and humpbacks are the leviathans most commonly seen by those in residence at local hotels and rental properties, but it is not uncommon to also see blue whales, sperm whales and even orcas. The breeding grounds for gray whales are centered around Magdalena Bay on the Pacific Coast, while the other species continue into the Sea of Cortez.

From 2014 to 2015, a gray whale dubbed Vavara made what is the longest mammalian migration ever recorded: nearly 14,000 miles round-trip, from Russia to Cabo San Lucas and back. Varvara had plenty of company along the way, though. Between 5,000 and 10,000 whales make the journey to Baja California Sur each year.

Humpbacks are the most flamboyant of these massive visitors, prone to spectacular breaches in which they lift their entire bodies out of the water before splashing down in epic belly flops. There is no single explanation for this behavior: some speculate that these acrobatic leaps are made to rid the whales of barnacles, others that it is a form of non-verbal communication.

Whatever the reason, the high-flying humpbacks are the primary attraction during seasonal whale watching tours in Los Cabos.

Although whales can often be seen from shore, most visitors interested in up-close looks at these gargantuan creatures sign up for one of the many local whale watching expeditions.

During whale watching months, mid-December to mid-March, seemingly every tour boat in Cabo San Lucas offers some sort of whale-focused excursion, from small pangas and fast inflatables to fishing boats, sailboats and luxury yachts.

Some local adventure companies even offer hydrophones, so that in addition to the sight of these magnificent creatures, guests can also listen to their incredible “songs,” a form of language so complex scientists are still struggling to achieve an even rudimentary understanding.

But we can guess what they’re saying: “Los Cabos sure is beautiful this time of year!”

Los Cabos Events 2017-18

Event Season Kicks Off in Los Cabos

Los Cabos has now become such a popular year-round travel destination that the traditional lines between high and low tourist seasons have become blurred. The distinction is still observed, however, when it comes to event scheduling. October remains the banner month for signature local events in Cabo San Lucas, symbolically kicking off the high season – October through May – in high style.

Sammy Hagar Birthday Concerts – October 9, 11, 13 and 14 in Cabo San Lucas

Every year, loyal “Redheads” from around the world flock to Cabo San Lucas for Sammy Hagar’s Birthday Bashes. This year is particularly big, as the former Van Halen and Montrose frontman turns 70 on October 13. An all-star cast of visiting musicians – including fellow members of The Circle:  Michal Anthony, Jason Bonham, and Vic Johnson – will join the “Red Rocker” for a series of special shows at Cabo Wabo Cantina, the landmark local bar and live music venue that Hagar opened with Van Halen bandmates in 1990.

Patron Saint Festival – Oct. 17 – 22 in Cabo San Lucas

Many place names in Spanish, particularly those in the “New World,” were bestowed by explorers based on the Catholic calendar, in which days were associated with different saints. Cabo San Lucas was named for Saint Luke, whose feast day is October 18. Each year, the Land’s End city hosts a Patron Saint Festival (called Fiestas Patronales), remembering the day – October 18, 1541 – when the place was named by Spanish sailor Francisco de Bolaños. Highlights include the crowning of a festival queen, and a colorful parade down Marina Boulevard.

Los Cabos Billfish Tournament – Oct. 15 – 19 in Cabo San Lucas

Bisbee’s two cash-rich tournaments get most of the publicity, but the Los Cabos Billfish Tournament also sends out a siren call to big-game fishermen eager for big-money prizes and jackpots. The three tournaments combined this year are expected to pay out over $4,735,000 to the winners. The 19th annual LCBT has three entry levels:  a $5,000 base entry for each 6-person team; daily jackpots for the largest tuna, wahoo and dorado; and daily billfish release jackpots.

Bisbee’s Los Cabos Offshore – Oct. 19 – 22 in Cabo San Lucas

Commonly known as “Little Bisbee’s,” to differentiate it from the “Big Bisbee’s” Black & Blue marlin fishing tournament that also takes place each October in Los Cabos, the Los Cabos Offshore dates back to 2002, and is considered a more laid-back, charity focused endeavor than the Black & Blue. Cash prizes are awarded to the teams with the three biggest qualifying fish in the game and billfish categories at the LCO, and large amounts of money are always donated to local causes.

Bisbee’s Black & Blue – Oct. 24 – 28 in Cabo San Lucas

Oft billed as “The Super Bowl of Sportfishing” thanks to its million dollar payouts, this marlin focused fishing tournament originally premiered in 1981, and remains to this day the highest profile annual event in Los Cabos. The $4.165 million payout in 2006 was and still is the largest in sportfishing history. Those who can’t afford the base entry and jackpot fees can still gather each day behind Puerto Paraiso to watch the weigh-ins.

David Pack’s Legends Live at Bisbee’s Black & Blue – Oct. 28 in Cabo San Lucas

Bisbee’s Black & Blue is going bigger than ever this year, bringing in five rock star legends – David Pack of Ambrosia, John Elefante of Kansas, Kelly Keagy of Night Ranger, Wally Palmar of The Romantics, and Jim Peterik of Survivor and .38 Special – to perform at the post-tournament awards banquet on the A.P.I. Cruise Ship Pier in Cabo San Lucas. The concert is part of a fundraising effort for the Bisbee’s Fish and Wildlife Conservation Fund.

Whale Watching Season Begins in Los Cabos

The biggest stars in Cabo aren’t the Hollywood actors and actresses that jet down each weekend for getaways in their beachfront luxury villas, but rather the enormous whales that annually leave their summer feeding grounds in polar waters for a long migration to their winter homes in Baja California Sur.

Like the movie stars and snowbirds who flock to Los Cabos around the same time, these leviathans of the deep know when to make a well-timed entrance.

Each year from mid-December to mid-March (scouts show up a little earlier, stragglers leave a little later), between 5,000 to 10,000 whales traverse vast tracts of ocean, bound for the warm water coves and lagoons of Baja Sur, where females birth babies the size of small cars. In 2014 – 2015, a gray whale dubbed Vavara made what is the longest mammalian migration ever recorded: nearly 14,000 miles round-trip, from Russia to Cabo San Lucas and back.
